We are pleased to announce BleachBit 2.0, one large step for open source system cleaning software. The latest release brings major improvements to infrastructure, security, stability, and the framework.

These are the changes since version 1.12:

Add drag-and-drop support (thanks to contractor Pavel). Try dropping files onto the main application window.
Fix preservation of thumbnails on Google Chrome and Chromium .
Fix error Favicons is version 36 or 38 when cleaning Google Chrome and Chromium.
Clean site engagement history on Google Chrome and Chromium.
Enable secure delete for SQLite.
Fix DatabaseError: no such table: moz_favicons for some Firefox profiles.

- Prepare code to work with Python 3 (thanks to tstenner).
- Combine Coveralls reports from Windows and Linux for better reporting of code coverage.
- Remove Python 2.5 support. Require Python 2.6 or Python 2.7
- Move some repositories to the new bleachbit organization on GitHub.
- Within minutes of each code commit, publish a Windows build to the new site ci.bleachbit.org.

Known issues

Drag-and-drop does not work on Windows when in administrator mode (issue #303) because of a security limitation of operating system. See the link for two workarounds.

Filenames with non-ASCII characters may cause deep scan to not work on Linux.

BleachBit 1.19 beta

UPDATE

February 27, 2018: BleachBit 2.0 has been released.

Please test BleachBit 1.19 beta, which replaces BleachBit 1.17 beta. Since BleachBit 1.12 there have been many big changes "under the hood" to the underlying parts of the system and that affect many parts of the application, so BleachBit 1.17 beta was tested for 10 months, the longest ever. Now BleachBit 1.19 beta is expected to be a solid release.

Tests

These tests are for both Windows and Linux.

Clean Google Chrome - History to clean the site engagement. You may not notice any obvious difference.
Clean Google Chrome - History. Are the thumbnails for bookmarks preserved?
Clean Google Chrome - History. There should be no error message about favicons.
Repeat the same tests above in Chromium.
Clean Firefox - URL History. You should not see an error, and the history should be cleared.

Windows

The installer executable and application executable should be digitally on all modern versions of Windows starting with Windows XP SP3. You should not get the "unknown publisher" warning.
Test on Windows XP. Clean any application that checks whether the process is locked (such as Firefox or Google Chrome). There should be no error message.
Test UTF-8 support (see BleachBit version 1.17).
Shred files, attempt to recover them with an undelete utility, and verify the contents are unrecoverable.

Linux

Clean System - Cache. It should not interfere with the Bluetooth daemon (LP#1700767).
Clean Liferea.
Clean apt clean while apt is locked by another process. BleachBit should abort.
Clean apt autoremove. There should be no error message.
Install the Debian 9 .deb package.
Install the Fedora 27 .rpm package.
Install the Ubuntu 16.10, 17.04, or 17.10 .deb package.
Install the openSUSE_Leap_42.x packages.

New domain and servers

The official BleachBit web site has moved from bleachbit.sourceforge.net to www.bleachbit.org to keep up with the high demand. While SourceForge provided web hosting for the last six years, the new domain and private hosting offer faster web servers, HTTP/2 protocol for additional speed, globally-distributed CDN, IPv6 protocol, and secure access through HTTPS (TLS version 1.2).

If you had a user account on the old site, it works on the new site with the same username and same password. However to login or post messages in the forum, you must now use HTTPS.

A few weeks earlier the primary, official download mirror moved to the new system under the domain download.bleachbit.org. Backed by 74 data centers around the world, your downloads will be fast even when many other people are downloading BleachBit.

BleachBit 1.10 includes important improvements for Windows 10, Firefox, Google Chrome, and more.

These are the changes since version 1.8:

Clean passwords on Firefox version 32+.
Clean Google Chrome cookies for non-default profiles.
Clean more autofill on Google Chrome (reported by pcdoctor01). If you are logged in to Google Chrome, it may automatically restore some of these values from your online Google account unless you disable the option Show addresses and credit cards from Google Payments in the autofill page of Google Chrome settings.
Add size column to side tree control (thanks to Ivor Hewitt).
Add an option to show file sizes as IEC units (1 KiB = 1024 bytes) instead of SI units (1 kB = 1000 bytes; thanks to Tristan Stenner).
Speed up identification of files using regular expressions by 5% to 50%
Allow relative paths with --shred command line argument (reported by Eva Putnam).

- CleanerML respects the cleaner-level os attribute filter.
- CleanerML supports negative regular expressions using the nregex option. Files which match this pattern will be ignored.
- Track code coverage on coveralls.io. This underestimates coverage because although Windows code is automatically tested, it is not yet counted here.
- Continuously run unit tests on Windows using AppVeyor for earlier detection of errors.
- Move end-user documentation to GitHub Pages, so you can edit the documentation by submitting pull requests to its repository.

Known issues

Vacuuming new versions of Google Chrome or Chromium gives an error like Error in execution of <bleachbit.Command.Function instance at 0x02BF90D0> (bug ticket: LP#1545567, LP#1546716).

Root cause: In a recent update to Google Chrome and Chromium, they changed the file Thumbnails to a directory with the same name, and when BleachBit tries to vacuum Thumbnails, it fails because it is not an SQLite file.

Solutions for BleachBit version 1.10:

Use BleachBit 1.11.
Ignore the harmless error
Do not vacuum Google Chrome or Chromium
Manually delete the Thumbnails directory
Add the Thumbnails as a custom directory to be cleaned in BleachBit. Add the directory in the Preferences, and then check the box System - Custom.
Disable generation of Thumbnails in Google Chrome or Chromium

BleachBit 1.9.3 beta

BleachBit, the open source system cleaner, announces the public 1.9.3 beta. Please help test today.

These particular areas are a priority for testing:

Take note of the Google Chrome autofill names, email addresses, etc. Then clean Google Chrome - Form History, and verify the entries are removed. You can also use this testing page. If you are logged in to Google Chrome, it may automatically restore some of these values from the cloud unless you disable the option Show addresses and credit cards from Google Payments in the autofill page of Google Chrome settings.
Click Edit - Preferences and toggle the new checkbox about IEC sizes. When it is enabled and you are previewing or cleaning, you should see IEC sizes such as KiB, MiB, GiB, and when disabled, you should see SI sizes such as kB, MB, and GB.

Specific to Linux
- Clean System - Memory while watching how much memory in use. For a few seconds most the memory should be in use.
Specific to Windows
- The installer should work.
- Start BleachBit, and without doing anything, close it. There should not be a popup window about bleachbit.exe.log.
- In the Windows Start Menu use the shortcut Bleachbit No UAC, and verify it starts BleachBit without showing the the User Access Control (UAC) dialog.
- Click Help - System Information, and look for a line platform.version. It should have a build number like 10.0.10240 and not like 32bit.
- Clean a locked file. Sometimes there are locked files in System - Temporary Files. Another way is to open a document in Microsoft Office, and clean it using File - Shred Files while Microsoft Office is running. Close BleachBit, and there should not be a popup window about bleachbit.exe.log.

BleachBit, the open source system cleaner, announces the public 1.9.2 beta which includes enhancements, important bug fixes, and translation updates. Please help test today.

These particular areas are a priority for testing:

Use the preview and clean commands to try out the new size column, which shows in the GUI next to the names of the options for each cleaner.
Check the option to delete Firefox passwords, and verify it gives a warning.
Clean passwords on Firefox version 32 or later, and verify they are deleted.
Enable checking for updates, disable the network by toggling the wifi, unplugging the network cable, or turning off the router. Then restart BleachBit, and verify there is a user-friendly error message.
Pass relative paths to the command line option --shred.
Open the preferences dialog, resize it, and notice it resizes better. Before it wasted whitespace in some places.
In the configuration file bleachbit.ini abbreviate True and False to T and F, restart BleachBit, and verify the preferences were maintained.
Specific to Linux
- Under KDE when running BleachBit with administrator privileges, clean KDE - Temporary Files (see LP#1377719).
- Test the new packages for Ubuntu 15.10, Fedora 22, and Fedora 23.
- Clean localizations. On many systems, more files should be cleaned than before.
- When starting BleachBit in a terminal in either GUI or CLI mode, verify in the terminal there is not an error "localizations.xml is not usable."
- Verify Windows Explorer does not show as an cleaner.
Specific to Windows
- Start BleachBit in standard (GUI) mode, and close it without doing any cleaning or previews. Verify there is a not a pop-up error about bleachbit.exe.log.
- Clean a non-removable directory (such as a directory with a file that is opened by a running application), close Bleachbit, and verify there is a not a pop-up error about bleachbit.exe.log.
- Use BleachBit in general, close the application, and verify there is not a pop-up error about bleachbit.exe.log when exiting.
- On Windows 10 verify the system presents the User Access Control (UAC) dialog when starting BleachBit under an administrator account.
- Clean Adobe Reader - Most Recently Used. Then open Adobe Reader and verify the list is cleaned.

Since BleachBit 1.0, odd-numbered minor versions are unstable releases, so BleachBit 1.9.2 is the first beta release for 1.10 stable.

Hosting on SourceForge

Some people are wondering whether BleachBit will continue to use SourceForge hosting services because this year SourceForge suffered several public embarrassments.

History

First, SourceForge modified the installer for GIMP and a few other projects that were no longer actively maintained on SourceForge.

Second, SourceForge suffered a massive outage from July 16 through July 22 that affected the BleachBit web site, which includes the download links, documentation, forums, and software update notifications.

Less intensely, SourceForge has generally fallen out of style with developers in favor of GitHub.

Nevertheless, SourceForge has provided valuable services to BleachBit: Since 2008 BleachBit has used multiple SourceForge services: file hosting, project web hosting, and SVN. The flexible LAMP system that SourceForge offers powers the BleachBit CMS and discussion forums.

However, BleachBit does not rely solely on SourceForge. In 2014 BleachBit migrated from SVN on SourceForge to Git on GitHub. Issues and translations have been managed on Canonical's Launchpad, and most downloads are served through a private mirror (i.e., not SourceForge).

The response

The issue of the installer is not a concern because:

The Windows installer for BleachBit is digitally signed to prevent tampering. It cannot be altered without damaging the signature, and wrapping the installer would show either no signature or another signature.
BleachBit is actively maintained, so under the old policy, SourceForge would not have done anything anyway.
BleachBit uses the SourceForge download service only as a secondary mirror.
In response SourceForge already changed their policies.

As an aside, though companies regularly contact me with offers, BleachBit has never included advertising junk in the installer.

In response to the outage issue: it was very inconvenient, but is it really worth moving the BleachBit website to another hosting service? I have hosting projects on SourceForge since 2002, and until this outage, SourceForge had a decent reputation for reliability. I hope they have learned a lesson, which I am sure was costly.

Looking forward

It would have alleviated 95% of the pain if SourceForge offered in case a HTTP redirect when the project web hosting is down to run a temporary site, so I filed a support ticket (support ticket 10988).

In the short term BleachBit will continue to use SourceForge for project web hosting and a secondary download mirror. I will consider options for improving the reliability of the BleachBit update notification system for the next release (BleachBit version 1.10). I will consider alternative hosting options, but I will prioritize the development of BleachBit code.

UPDATE (February 2016): BleachBit is no longer hosted on SourceForge.

BleachBit 1.8 fixes important bugs for Windows, enhances Winapp2.ini support, and more.

Changes

These are the changes since version 1.6:

In Preferences, there is a new option "Confirm before delete" that disables the confirmation (thanks to codesomniare).
When BleachBit starts, the window is centered.
The tool "Shred Settings and Quit" in the File menu is fixed.
Added cleaning for Opera passwords (Linux support thanks to theatre-x).
Shrink storage size of BleachBit icon.
Add descriptions to many cleaners (thanks to theatre-x).

Add a new command line option --debug-log that logs debug messages to a file.

Specific to Windows
- Improve support for very long file names and filenames with Unicode characters.
- Fix support for wiping free space using a long path such as %TEMP%. The symptom was it finished far too quickly.

Known issues

On Windows when exiting you may see a notice about bleachbit.exe.log, which contains the error "directory is not empty" (LP#1469588). The error is harmless, and it is fixed in BleachBit 1.9.2 beta.

On Windows 10, BleachBit will not show the User Access Control dialog to elevate to administrator privileges (LP#1496629), so you may see access denied error messages for certain options. This issue is fixed in BleachBit 1.9.2 beta.

BleachBit, the open source system cleaner, announces the public 1.7.7 beta which includes enhancements, important bug fixes, and translation updates. Please help test today.

These particular areas are a priority for testing:

In Preferences, uncheck Confirm before delete, and verify the Delete command does not prompt you to confirm. Then check the option, and verify it does prompt you to confirm. (Patch thanks to codesomniare.)
When BleachBit starts, the window should be centered (bug 1386066 reported by LPNow).
Reset the BleachBit configuration (File - Shred Settings and Quit), restart BleachBit, and verify it does not crash during startup. Then start BleachBit again, and verify it starts OK.
Clean Google Chrome, and verify there are no red errors.
Clean Firefox, and verify there are no red errors.
Clean SeaMonkey cache (bug 1407064, patch thanks to Sherman).
Opera: delete passwords (patch thanks to theatre-x).
Run BleachBit with the --debug-log=/path/filename command line option, and verify the log is created.

Windows example:

Known issue: When closing BleachBit on Windows, there is a popup about an error log in %ProgramFiles(x86)%.

- Test the new Debian 8 package.
- Test the new Fedora 21 package.
- Test the new Ubuntu 15.04 package.
Specific to Windows
- Clean Winapp2.ini entries that reference these environment variables: commonappdata, localappdata, music, pictures, video, documents. (You can check which entries have these variables by searching Winapp2-combined.ini.)
- Clean the system logs, and you may see files deleted under %WINDIR%\SoftwareDistribution.
- Clean Skype uninstallers.
- In the Preferences under Drives, set a path to %TEMP%. (It is the default setting, so if it already set there, do not change it.) Then clean System - Wipe Free Disk Space. It should take at least several minutes (or maybe hours). Then after wiping free space, confirm there is no error "no such file or directory" (bug 1392889 reported by Chris).
- Make sure there are files and folders in the Recycle Bin. There do not have to be many, but ideally there are files or folders with long names and with Unicode characters in their names. Then clean the Recycle Bin. Use Windows Explorer to open the Recycle Bin to verify it is empty. Also, verify the Recycle Bin icon indicates it is empty.
- Clean System - Temporary Files, and verify %TEMP%\Low still exists (bug 1421726 reported by Stewart).
- Put a file with a long name (200+ characters) in %TEMP%. Clean System - Temporary Files, and verify the file is gone.
- Put a file with Unicode characters in the filename in %TEMP%. Clean System - Temporary Files, and verify the file is gone (bug 1390950 reported by bsodx2).
- Run deep scan, and verify it finds any files under %USERPROFILE%.
- Use regedit to make a backup of the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist. Clean Windows Explorer - Most Recently Used, and verify the recently-used application list in the Start menu is clear. Then run a few applications, and verify they are added to the list. (Bug LP#828475 reported by jlick.)

BleachBit 1.6 fixes important bug for Google Chrome, Windows, and KDE, and it better cleans Google Chrome and Firefox.

Google Chrome: fix error "Favicons is version 29"
Google Chrome: clean application cache directory.
Google Chrome and Chromium: in the Preferences (JSON) file clean a list of HTTP servers that used SPDY, which can be used to track servers to which the browser was connected

Firefox: clean bookmark backups using a new option called Backup.

Known issues

Windows users who try to wipe free disk space in %TEMP% (the default setting) will see the error "[Errno 2] No such file or directory." When this process works, it is normally very slow (minutes or hours), but with the error, it completes quickly. There are two workarounds (choose one):
