The best player on either side in the second period was Seattle goaltender Philipp Grubauer. The Blackhawks had a few really good chances and he was up to the task. Thankfully, the Blackhawks were able to get on the board first with a power play goal. Chicago was flying with four lines skating well and creating chances. The Hawks doubled their lead with 22 seconds left in the period.

The Blackhawks kept their foot on the gas and kept getting chances, but Jaden Schwartz cut the lead in half at 10:48 into the third. Chicago re-established their two-goal lead less than three minutes later, but Seattle cut it back to one 70 seconds after the Blackhawks scored their third of the night. Ilya Mikheyev scored into the empty net to seal the deal for Chicago to get back into the win column — finally.

Star 1: Sacha Boisvert

The Blackhawks had just allowed a goal to cut their lead in half. They blew a 2-0 lead the last time they played Seattle, losing 3-2. The next goal was going to be important. And it came from Boisvert — his first in the NHL. And it held up as the game-winning goal! Congrats, Sacha!

Star 2: Connor Bedard

Bedard was really good tonight, but especially in the second period. He could have easily had three assists in the first half of the second and then almost scored with ten seconds left in the middle frame. He dominated almost every one of his shifts. At the end of two periods, the line of Bedard, Teuvo Teräväinen and Nick Lardis was on the ice for a 4-0 shot on net advantage and a 0.56 expected goals for in 7:13 at 5-on-5 (a 90.46 expected goals for percentage). His assist on the Teräväinen goal was his 70th point of the year, and he picked up a second assist on the empty net goal. Bedard was also the busiest Blackhawk in the faceoff circle, and he was really good there again tonight, too; he won 13 of 21 in the game.

Star 3: Ryan Donato

Donato had a really good night individually. At the end of two periods, he led the Blackhawks in shot attempts (nine), individual scoring chances (six) and individual high danger chances (four). Since he got moved onto the line with Nazar he’s noticeably been seeing more offensive opportunities and has been creating more for himself.

• The Blackhawks were having a really good second period, but couldn’t get a goal — which can be dangerous. Teräväinen moved up to the top line at even strength last game and found some jump in after struggling for a bit. He was able to finally get the Blackhawks on the board with a power play goal in the second period — he needed a score and got one.

• The line of Ryan Greene, Frank Nazar and Ryan Donato was really good in the first period. They had a 5-1 shot attempt advantage in 3:07 at 5-on-5. After two periods, this line was on the ice for 11 Blackhawks shot attempts in 6:33 at 5-on-5.

• I mentioned them after last game, but I really liked the game from Kevin Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro again tonight. Korchinski was skating with the puck really well and broke up a few passes. He picked up an assist on the Boisvert goal — in Korchinski’s 100th NHL game. Del Mastro had a big reverse hit late in the first period and did a nice job playing his off-side on the penalty kill. The two young defenders understand this is their opportunity to show the front office and coaches they’re ready to be NHL players next year and they’re making it count.

• Landon Slaggert was really good tonight. He picked up the other assist on Boisvert goal. His speed was a problem for Seattle and he was making smart plays all night.

• Alex Vlasic appeared to block a shot and hurt something about 12 minutes into the first period. He went straight to the room; even though he iced the puck, the injury was enough that the officials allowed the change. He returned to the bench a couple minutes later (exhale).

• Sam Rinzel skated 8:31 in the first period. That feels like a lot. But the shift on which Vlasic got hurt was a long one; Rinzel was stuck on the ice for 3:21 just on that one shift.

• Seattle pushed back a bit late in the second period, but the Blackhawks had a 15-11 advantage in scoring chances in that period. The Blackhawks had a 5-0 advantage in high danger chances in the second. They were skating all four lines confidently and getting chances from all four of them.

• Söderblom stopped 25 of 27 and was really good all night.
