Alas, it wasn’t to be. Seiya Suzuki flew out harmlessly on the next pitch, and Ian Happ popped out to end it. Cubs lose. Everyone is sad. Suzuki still in a funk.

Speaking of which, yes, in case you were wondering, we are currently watching him play through the worst offensive stretch of his career. It hasn’t just felt that way.

It’s actually statistically true:

That metric is averaging a guy’s performance over the last 15 games (and then recalibrates the next day for the new set of 15 games, and so on and so forth), so you get a better smoothing of the day to day fluctuations in performance. You can see, instead, how a guy is doing over a chunk of time. And for Suzuki, who is notoriously streaky, this current chunk is quite plainly the worst of his career.

It’s not just the low point in the rolling 15-game average for Seiya Suzuki’s wOBA, it’s also that PRE-FREAKING-CIPITOUS fall off. The only fall in his career that rapid and that steep came at the very outset of his arrival into MLB, which was more the product of where he started in a small sample than how much he struggled.

Since May 10, Suzuki has hit .160/.200/.185 with a 9 wRC+. Nine. His wOBA is .179 and he’s mostly earned it with a .208 xwOBA. He’s striking out 32.9% of the time, walking just 3.5% of the time, and he has just two extra-base hits – two doubles – over those 85 plate appearances. I can’t decide if it’s encouraging or discouraging that his plate discipline metrics during this period are generally normal for him. It’s not like he’s suddenly started chasing more or even whiffing more. He’s just whiffing at the worst possible times and making the worst possible contact.

Like a lot of Cubs hitters, Suzuki has seen a dramatic increase in breaking pitches during this time (sliders in particular), and he has been obliterated by them. He has been in his career typically about league-average against sliders, but during this last month, he has been at nearly four negative runs against sliders – that’s more than double his number ALL OF LAST YEAR against sliders (which, by the way, was his worst year against sliders). Putting that another way, with 10 runs approximating one win in value, Suzuki’s struggles against sliders alone since May 10 have been worth almost half of a loss for the Cubs. One batter. Against one pitch type.

Which is another way of saying, hey, at least he knows what he needs to work on?

They don’t hit homers. They don’t have a killer bullpen. They aren’t spraying line drives. They don’t steal bases better than everyone else. They’re not a collection of exciting, but flawed young players. They’re not only veterans. They aren’t led by a dominant rotation. They don’t show fight or always come back late. There’s no one chasing a record or some exciting franchise history. Nothing. Maybe you can call them a great defensive team, but that’s about it.

You can call me late to the party, but it finally, fully hit me in the ninth inning last night against the Athletics.

Where Is the Fight, Cubs?

After the A’s pitching staff recorded a ridiculous 17-straight outs, the ninth inning began with each of the first two Cubs reaching base (Nico Hoerner walked and PCA knocked one into right field).

Down just one run, the Cubs had their 3-4-5 hitters up. Three of their four most expensive position players, in fact (the fourth one was already pinch-hit for earlier in the night…). And for a moment, the Cubs were actually projected to WIN that game.

See the win probability line drift momentarily into the Cubs side of the ledger? At that point, following PCA’s single, the Cubs had a 51.3% chance of winning the game.

Of course, as you already know, they did not.

The middle of the order, the three guys you’re paying to drive in runs and make a difference, went down 1-2-3. Something we’re a little too used to at this point.

• Alex Bregman ($30.8M AAV) struck out
• Seiya Suzuki ($17M AAV) flew out to right field
• Ian Happ ($20.3M AAV) flew out to center field

And it wasn’t surprising. It was just more of the same.

And it’s just a very disappointing thing to watch on a nightly basis. At some point, as fans, we need something to grasp onto; otherwise, this entire experience just becomes a chore.

Mind you, I’m not saying there aren’t good individual performances. I actually think Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch, in particular, are going to finish this year with fantastic numbers. Indeed, they’ve each been among the 15 most valuable players in MLB (by fWAR) for almost two months now. But that hasn’t translated into wins, and it hasn’t been either player’s best stretch in a Cubs uniform, so it just sort of flies under the radar.

In the meantime, Justin Steele’s epic return has been delayed. Shota Imanaga’s reemergence (and all good vibes therein) has been completely decimated by an onslaught of homers and runs. Cade Horton is out for all of this year and most of next year. Dansby Swanson is worse than he’s ever been. Seiya Suzuki looks INSANELY lost at the plate. Moises Ballesteros has never recovered from his first offensive slump. Alex Bregman is just treading water. Nico Hoerner is fine-ish, but could not maintain that next offensive level he flashed at the end of last season and start of this season. Miguel Amaya didn’t take a big step forward. Daniel Palencia isn’t racking up saves. Edward Cabrera didn’t turn into an ace.

And so on.

There’s nothing exciting about this team. Noting inspiring about this team. They’re lifeless. Rudderless. And frustrating.

They might still make the playoffs. In fact, I’d wager they probably will — that’s just the nature of the current Wild Card era/rules. Regardless of how they make us feel, there is a lot of talent on this team. But that almost makes it worse. It is/was our expectation that they’d finally win this division. But that’s a long shot at this point. It is/was our expectation that, even if they weren’t the first or second seed, this team would be fun.

But does any of this feel fun to you?

The only thing really keeping me going right now is the fact that, despite their annoying start last night, June is still a month ripe with opportunities. Likewise, it’s hard to imagine it getting much worse for Dansby Swanson or Seiya Suzuki. And it won’t hurt that both Edward Cabrera and Matthew Boyd are coming back. Matt Shaw soon, too.

But other than that, I’ve got nothing. In fact, the only other positive thing I can muster – good performances from certain controllable players (Ben Brown, Busch, PCA, etc.) – is about next year, which are two words I have no interest in right now.

I don’t know what it will take to kick this team into gear, but they better start soon. Because this brand of baseball … this absolute lifelessness, joylessness … is painful to watch.

Cubs Prospects Report | June 3, 2026

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

With the exception of James Triantos and Scott Kingery, the Iowa Cubs series opener against the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers) was one to forget. Ty Blach was on the mound for the Cubs, and it was a rough go of it for him. He allowed a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run homer and three more in the third on an RBI double and a two-run homer.

Heading into the fifth, it was 5-0, and Blach was still on the mound, and Toledo broke the game wide open. They picked up five more off Blach, including a grand slam, and three more off Luke Little. After five innings, Toledo held a 13-0 advantage. Ultimately, the Cubs ended up dropping this one 16-1 with their only run coming on a bases-loaded walk to BJ Murray.

As mentioned above, despite the loss, James Triantos and Scott Kingery had solid days at the plate. Triantos picked up three hits, including a double, stole a base, and scored the one run of the day. Scott Kingery also had a pair of hits. Other than those two, though, Ben Cowles had the only other hit on the day for Iowa.

Also, a nugget worth noting, Matt Shaw was in the lineup in center field. It was his first action since mid-May due to a back injury.

Double-A Knoxville Smokies

A late comeback attempt wasn’t quite enough for the Knoxville Smokies against the Birmingham Barons (White Sox) on Tuesday. Frankie Scalzo Jr. opened for the Smokies and tossed a scoreless frame, but Yenrri Rojas took over and got roughed up. Rojas allowed a pair of runs in the second and four more in the third, putting the Smokies in a 6-0 hole. Jefferson Rojas got Knoxville on the board in the third with an RBI single, but the Barons immediately answered with a run of their own, making it 7-1.

In the fifth inning, though, the Smokies started to make things interesting. First, Andy Garriola brought in a pair of runs on a two-RBI single, then Carter Trice brought in another with an RBI single, which cut the deficit in half to 7-4. In the sixth, an Alex Ramirez sacrifice fly then made it 7-5.

7-5 was still the score entering the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and Jefferson Rojas on first, a pair of wild pitches allowed Rojas to come around and score and make it 7-6. Then, Andy Garriola roped a two-out double, and just like that, the tying run was in scoring position. Unfortunately, Carter Trice went down swinging, and that’s how the game ended, with the comeback coming up just short.

High-A South Bend Cubs

The lone win in the system on Tuesday came from the South Bend Cubs as they took on the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals). The Cubs got out to an early lead in the top of the first on a Josiah Hartshorn solo homer. Hartshorn had three hits on the day and is hitting .400 since his call-up to South Bend.

After taking the early lead, though, the River Bandits came roaring back. They picked up a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game, then three more in the third to jump out to a 4-1 advantage.

In the top of the fourth, the seesaw battle continued. Now it was South Bend’s turn to storm back. First, Miguel Useche scored Hartshorn on an RBI double, making it 4-2. Then, Justin Stransky brought in another run on a groundout. With two out and two on, Drew Bowser brought in a pair with a two-RBI double, giving the lead back to the Cubs, 5-4.

That’s how the score would remain until the top of the ninth, when the Cubs added some insurance. Christian Olivo first brought in Stransky on an RBI single, then Hartshorn bookended the scoring with a two-RBI single, making it 8-4, which ended up as the final.

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped a tough one in extra innings to open their series with the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays) on Tuesday. Charleston got to starter Edwardo Melendez for a pair of runs – one in the first and one in the third – over his 3.2-inning outing. Trailing 2-0 entering the fourth, though, the Pelicans would even the score. Yahil Melendez and Jairo Diaz each chipped in with RBI singles to make it a 2-2 ballgame.

That’s how this game would remain until extra innings. As the game went into the 10th inning tied 2-2, the Pelicans got out ahead in the top half on an Edward Vargas RBI single, scoring the ghost runner. Unfortunately, Myrtle Beach wasn’t able to add any more, which proved costly.

In the bottom of the 10th, the RiverDogs tied the game on an RBI double to lead off the frame, then walked it off, scoring on a wild pitch by Aiden Moffett with runners on second and third.

Shaw said after the game that he felt good physically, and he is expected to be at DH for the I-Cubs today. It’s not yet been announced how long this rehab stint will last, but the Cubs will happily slide Shaw back into his utility role with the big league team when he’s ready. He could potentially replace Kevin Alcantara on the roster (righty bat against lefties), or he could replace Pedro Ramirez (more infield focus than outfield).

The 24-year-old second year big leaguer has hit .242/.291/.400/94 wRC+ on the season, which really isn’t too bad for a young player still adjusting to big league pitching, while also being asked to play all over the diamond and come in off the bench.

“It’s definitely a lot easier to play one position than to move around a lot,” Shaw told Tommy Birch of his role. “I’ve realized that playing six, seven different positions, I think the best thing I can do is just kind of be average at all those positions. You just don’t have enough time in the day to be trained at seven positions like it is when you play there every day and you’ve got your routine and all those things. I’m figuring it out.”

Behind the scenes with Caleb Williams and Madden NFL ’27

As someone who grew up in the Jordan era and has worn more pairs of Air Jordans than he’d care to admit, I’ve been thinking about the similarities between the two “Jumpman” images. My only issue here is that I struggle to call Caleb Williams’ throw a Jumpman pose. Can we call it the Throwman instead? Could that be a thing? I don’t want the Nike or Jordan Brand law team to pull up and give Caleb the business over copyright infringement. We don’t need another Iceman situation here.
