After screenings at Lovebytes and Cannes, Universal Everything’s Advanced Beauty reel will be available online in 1920 HD quality format. Starting on July 7th, every week there will be a new one on their site or via podcast. Here comes the trailer, which is very promising for the entire show.

Advanced Beauty is an ongoing exploration of digital artworks born and influenced by sound, an ever-growing collaboration between programmers, artists, musicians, animators and architects.

The first collection is a series of audio-reactive ‘video sound sculptures’. Inspired by synasthesia, the rare, sensory experience of seeing sound or tasting colours, these videos are physical manifestations of sound, sculpted by volume, pitch or structure of the soundtrack.

The Ars Electronica Animation Festival needed sujet, jingle and inserts for creating an appropriate setting when presenting over 200 works from different categories and all over the world. Looking at the ever-growing domain of generative art, it appeared appropriate to emphasize that generative animation has grown beyond what is called experimental. Each video submission was introduced with a random-animated insert solely created in vvvv.

The video functions as the narrator’s stream of consciousness. There are no linear storylines, but strong images connected to the narrator’s memento of the past, the presence and the future. The decision to use these fluent imagery works best for showing that every tense presents itself in the present: the very moment of thinking.

After many years of drug addiction, the party yuppie Jacob (Milton Welsh) is finally disillusioned. All his fears have ripped such a big hole into his life, which he couldn’t fill up with all the drugs in the world. Loosing the trust of his ex-girlfriend Anne (Florencia Lamarca) and being followed by Wusil (John Engel) a dealer known for his brutality, Jacob decides to commit suicide as his last chance to escape for ever from all his problems.

But during the passage between life and death he is confronted with voices of his past, who don’t want to let him go. As the borders between dream and reality blur he’s being transformed into something strange – filled with humanity but not human. A Young Boy (Jacob Baerenklau) who lives in an abandoned parking garage claims to be a intermediary between the long forgotten gods and the humans on earth. He explains to Jacob that the gods once decided to clean the world from greedy and selfish people, and get rid of them, by transforming them into pigeons . And Jacob is now one of them.

Being forced into this existence, he at first tries to escape. By trying to find a way out of this utopia, he slowly realizes something new in him: the will and the strength to really clean up his past. Step by step he finds himself facing his fears and changes the world to something better as he found it before.

..So we got on this plane in Vienna. Destination Minneapolis/ Minnesota/ USA. None of us ever asked what we can expect. A small band from Austria? No questions, officer! A couple of tours through Europe in our hands and bad sleeping places in our bones. Some phone calls and many more emails later we had the first barbecue and diarrhea in the US. It may sound complicated to secretaries and pathetic to the rest, but it has something to do with freedom if you play music in a band…. sit packed in a small white van for hours with your friends, play stages dirtier than the thoughts of the sound engineer, meet people where you know from the beginning that these can be your friends for the next 10 years, keep eating bad food in gas stations, talk for hours about music, politics and sexual standards,… and play your music live to people who are at this moment part of the whole thing. And it´s a good thing. I like it.

Aus Sicherheitsgründen feiern vier Bewohner einer Hausgemeinschaft Silvester 2019 in einem Bunker. Die Festivität läuft nach gewohnten Mustern ab, bis plötzlich das Telefon klingelt und sich ein weiterer Gast ankündigt. Daraufhin ist die gute Stimmung mit einem Schlag verflogen. Jeder der Charaktere bereitet sich auf seine Art auf die Ankunft des unerwarteten Gastes vor.
Basis dieses Filmes bildet eine Welt zu 2019, die unserer sehr ähnelt: die Medien sorgen für Angst und Panik, die die Paranoia dementsprechend erblühen lässt. In diesem Falle ist Herr Voss sehr bedacht, welche Gefahren draußen auf die Bewohner warten. Frau Else ist die soziale Schnittstelle aller und stellt somit die Gesellschaft 2020 dar. Denn unserer Annahme nach sind soziale Bande in 2020 immer schwerer zu knüpfen. Die wachsende Anonymität sowie auch die sich verbreitende Idee des Alleinelebens führen dazu, dass die Menschheit vereinsamt und jegliche Fähigkeit verliert miteinander zu kommunizieren. Frau Else ist aber in ihrer Hausgemeinschaft darauf bedacht soziale Muster und deren Werte aufrechtzuhalten. So entsteht auch eine Abhängigkeit der Charaktere untereinander. Anne ist Symbol dafür, dass die Welt außerhalb des Bunkers noch kein «wasteland» ist. Somit lassen wir die Vermutung offen, dass innerhalb des Bunkers eine Realität dargestellt wird, die jedoch für die tatsächliche Umwelt nicht zutreffen muss.

Er hat das große Los gezogen, durch Entführung und Erpressung ist er an sehr viel Geld gekommen. Alles was er jetzt noch tun muss, ist die Geisel freizulassen und sich abzusetzen. Der Plan scheint perfekt. Aber das Mädchen, das er festhält, will einfach nicht gehen. Diese Verrückte hält an der fixen Idee fest, dass das Ende der Entführung auch ihren Tod bedeutet. Sie nervt, betört, versucht zu überzeugen, setzt alles daran zu sterben. Er will sich auf keinen Fall zum Möder machen lassen. Doch als sie ihm die Maske vom Kopf reisst, gerät sein Plan endültig ausser Kontrolle.

Eine Frau bringt ihren Liebhaber mit nach Hause und fängt sogleich an, ihm zu erklären, wie gut sie anfangs doch sei. Schnell erfährt man aber, dass sie Probleme hat, Dinge fortzuführen und das Ende kommt ebenso schnell wie der Anfang.

In der von gold extra konzipierten künstlerischen Gemeinschaftsarbeit Love City entwickeln Video- und AudiokünstlerInnen aus Maastricht, Tallinn und Salzburg Visionen einer neuen Stadt. Love City fordert die KünstlerInnen auf, positive Eindrücke aus der jeweiligen Heimatstadt in Form von Video- und Audiosamples zu sammeln. Diese Materialen werden allen teilnehmenden KünstlerInnen zur Verfügung gestellt und bilden die gemeinsame Grundlage für die Utopie einer lebens- und liebenswerten Stadt.

Der Film zeigt den Livemitschnitt der Love City – Session von Matone (blendwerk) und iRoy (Schalldampfer) in Tallinn/Estland am 14. Mai 2005.

Eine Reise hin und zurück ins Nirgendwo, auf der die Planlosigkeit zum Programm wird. Die Situation der 36 Stunden wird hier am stärksten spührbar; Zeitknappheit führt zu experimentellen Handlungen mit der Kamera, die als Aufnahmegerät und Projektionsfläche gleichzeitig dient. Dieser Kunstgriff schafft das scheinbar unmögliche Erleben beider Fahrtrichtungen zur selben Zeit.

Menschen hüpfen durchs Bild. Tausend Gesichter und keines, das man sich näher angucken möchte, weil einen die Angst plagt, dann doch genauer hinschauen zu müssen, um zu sehen, welches Elend sich hinter all den Gesichtern verbirgt. In Wirklichkeit. Dann lieber diese junge Frau, die uns entgegenstrebt, aber hey! die wird ja verfolgt, von einem Typen, der ihr was hinterher brüllt. Ihr Augenaufschlag einmal im Takt der Musik.

Der Typ verzweifelt. Das sieht so endgültig aus, so tragisch, so schmerzvoll. Was ist passiert? Möglich, dass man sich noch Stunden nach dem Schauen des Videos diese Frage stellt. Möglich, dass dieses Video einem mehr zu bedeuten imstande ist, als nur ein weiteres kleines musikillustrierendes Filmchen zu sein. Der Track gewinnt noch mehr an Größe, wann darf man so was schon mal über ein Musikvideo schreiben? Und dazu noch ein one-shot-Video? Und das bei dieser Band?

Wenn selbige nicht ein Mal durchs Bild hüpfen würde, was, mit Sicherheit nicht so gemeint, jedoch einer ironischen Brechung gleichkäme, hätte man regelrecht Panik, das könnte die Wirklichkeit sein und man wäre der einzige, der sie so wahrnimmt. [..] (Text von PNG Magazin)

this visualisation was produced for the “listening between the lines” evening of this year´s ars electronica festival05, at brucknerhaus linz, austria. muoyce (a mixture of music and james joyce) is john cages´s acustic interpretation of james joyce´s “finnegan´s wake”. the video-part is again my interpretation of what I heard and felt. I heard a lot of nonsense but I felt this makes sense….BROWN….BROWN…BROWN….UNDER THE WOODEN BRIDGE…AND THE NIGHT IS FALLING…I imagined a person falling but at the same time erecting in a static, dark image. falling and erecting in a 2min process, the world behind goes on and doesn´t care. the slow 2min falling process was made through morphs (a person falling usually takes 1 1/2 seconds…). at ars electronica festival the piece was projected on 4 screens. thanks to dietrich for falling and erecting.

Dieser Animationsfilm (als part I einer trilogie gedacht) von Reinhold Bidner und Stefan Mittlböck- Jungwirth beschreibt “nur” eine kurze Alltagsszene. Die Umsetzung dieses Films führte die beiden Künstler jedoch in zahlreiche wohnungen im Großraum Linz/ Oberösterreich, wo sie mit Hilfe von Schablonen jeweils ein oder mehrere Einzelbilder dieses Movies an eine zur Verfügung gestellte Fläche malten/sprayten. Diese wurden anschließend abfotografiert und wieder zu einem Film aneinandergereiht.

Neben dieser “Hauptebene” sind die Hintergründe, also Details, Materialien oder Inhaber der Privaträume, in denen die Stencils entstanden, ebenso wichtig. Diese erzählen eine zweite Geschichte und verleihen dem Film eine sehr eigene Bildsprache.

Im Landeskulturzentrum Ursulinenhof wurden neben dem Film die im Arbeitsprozeß entstandenen Fotos erstmals präsentiert.”

“Vor dem Schlafen gehen immer brav die Zähne putzen!”- Diese alte Weisheit befolgt auch der jugendliche Hauptdarsteller des Kurzfilms „Wetterumschwung” vom 21-jährigen Filmemacher Jascha Novak. Doch kurz bevor er sich hinlegt, hört er das pfeifende Geräusch einer Sirene. Schnell begreift er, dass sich etwas Dramatisches zugetragen haben muss. Reflexartig eilt er zum Radio, schaltet dieses ein und erfährt von der nuklearen Katastrophe, die sich so eben ereignet hat. Er befolgt die Anweisungen und Vorsichtsmaßnahmen, die im Radio gesagt werden und nimmt alles unmittelbar Lebensnotwendige und sperrt sich damit ins Badezimmer ein. Jetzt heißt es warten – auf einen Anruf, auf eine Radiomeldung, auf die Polizei. So vergeht die Zeit: Minute um Minute, Stunde um Stunde, bis der Junge durch das Radio erfährt, dass die nuklearen Wolken aufgrund eines Wetterumschwungs nun in Richtung Süden, in seine Richtung, ziehen. Wenige Minuten später steht auch schon die Polizei vor der Tür und teilt ihm einen Treffpunkt mit, da seine Wohnung evakuiert werden muss. Schnell packt er seine wichtigsten Sachen zusammen und macht sich auf dem Weg zu diesem Treffpunkt. Der Weg dorthin erscheint endlos. Zum Glück trifft er eine Bekannte, die ihn im Auto mitnimmt. Doch es bildet sich ein Stau und es bleibt nichts anderes übrig, als zu Fuß zum Treffpunkt zu gelangen. Synopsis
Der Charakter, genannt „ZODI“ wacht in einem düsteren Raum auf. Er trägt eine Schutzmaske, weil sich in dem Raum wahrscheinlich Gas befindet. Das Zimmer ist schlicht mit einem Tisch, einem Kasten, einer Hängelampe und einer großen eisernen Tür ausgestattet. Es handelt sich um ein Gefängnis, indem Zodi eingesperrt ist. Zodi sehnt sich jedoch nach der Freiheit und beschließt auszubrechen. Er bedient sich einfacher Gegenstände wie einem Stein, den er am Boden findet, doch seine Ausbruchsversuche scheitern. Um nicht völlig die zeitliche Orientierung zu verlieren ritzt Zodi für jeden Tag, den er im Gefängnis verbringen muss, einen Strich an die Wand. Schließlich entscheidet er sich dem ganzen ein Ende zu machen. Zodi nimmt die Schutzmaske ab und schleudert diese gegen die eiserne Tür. Überraschenderweise springt diese auf und die Freiheit leuchtet ihm nur ein paar Schritte entfernt mit einem gleißenden Lichtkegel entgegen. Doch ohne Schutzmaske bekommt er keine Luft und erstickt.
„ZODI“ ist ein Begriff aus dem Militärdienst und heißt Zeit ohne Dienstliche Inanspruchnahme. In meiner Grundwehrdienstzeit war dieses Wort für mich der Inbegriff von Freiheit.

Für Lost Parts wurde live gefilmtes Material bei einem Konzert der japanischen Speed-Core Band Melt Banana in modifizierten Kopierabläufen dekonstruiert und die daraus scheinbar beliebig erzeugten hektischen Patterns an der Musik arrangiert.
