Built in a parcel of 6,000m2 (19,685 ft2), the Spanish Pavilion has a usable area of 7,500m2 (24,600 ft2). Aside from the spaces destined to hold the main exhibits, the pavilion counts with installations to host official receptions, an auditorium with 150 seats, a conference room equipped with simultaneous translation, a press room with a production set, and a support area for Spanish companies endowed with meeting rooms and work desks.

Ruiz-Geli created the Villa Nurbs (NURBS=”non-uniform rational B-spline”) in the coastal town Empuriabrava at the Costa Brava (Spain). The mixture of ceramics and plastics try to optimize the surface and structure, which is important for the temperature regulation inside the house. Our will was to link all inner spaces to the park and the sea in front of it. Therefore, the building displays an open, fragmented front towards the park, allowing views of the sea from the upper level and letting the former penetrate through the outer plaza. Meanwhile, the rest of the perimeter isolates from the surroundings.

The “Casa del Condestable” is a building listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest. It was built from 1548 by Luis de Beaumont, 4th Count of Lerín and Constable of the Kingdom of Navarre. For centuries it belonged to the House of Alba and at one time was a bishop’s residence. In the late nineteenth century it was the object of numerous reforms with the purpose of fitting it out for rental dwellings, shops and artisan workshops. The facades were also modified according to the eclectic taste of the time, replacing the corner balcony by a chamfered corner with lookouts. In the year 2000, in a state of ruin, it was acquired by the City Hall to prevent it being demolished and it was then decided to refurbish it for use as a civic centre in the Old Town of Pamplona.

Network of Ceramics Chairs ASCER Collaboration between Architecture schools and the Ceramic Industry This video portraits the architecture workshop held in Castellón, Spain, during November 2009. The event was directed by the directors of the Ceramics Chairs from four different schools of architecture (Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia) with the participation of guest architects Luis Moreno Mansilla (Mansilla -Tuñón), Enrique Sobejano (Nieto – Sobejano) and Pepe Morales (Morales – de Giles). In its effort to spread knowledge of ceramics and its architectural applications amongst professionals, ASCER (Spanish Association ofCeramic Tiles Manufacturers) started in 2004 a series of Ceramics Chairs in different schools of architecture in Spain.

Studio Banana TV interviews Taiwanese videoartist Chen Chieh Jen. Chen’s near silent works visually condense a range of human emotions such as pain and isolation to examine the social, political, and historical burdens of marginalized people and communities in Taiwan and beyond. He presented his first video work, Lingchi – Echoes of a Historical Photograph, at the 2002 Taipei Biennial. In this work, the artist reinterprets Chinese history by analyzing an early twentieth-century documentary photograph of a criminal execution in pre-modern China taken by a French soldier and made famous by the French thinker Georges Bataille. In the video works Factory, Bade Area, and On Going, the artist focuses his lens on forgotten locations and ostracized populations.

Iñaki Abalos (San Sebastian, 1956) is an architect from the School of Architecture of Madrid, Professor of projects and since 2001 director of the Laboratory of Techniques and Contemporary Landscapes ETSAM. Currently he is Kenzo Tange Professor at Harvard GSD. He has been a visiting professor at many universities including the Architectural Association in London, the ETH Lausanne, Columbia University, Princeton University or the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio. After being a partner in Abalos & Herreros, he currently runs with Renata Sentkiewicz “Abalos + Sentkiewicz Architects” in Madrid.
