A U.S. Army Apache helicopter accidentally dropped an inactive missile over central Texas last night, forcing dozens of homes to be evacuated.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the bizarre incident.  Resident in Killeen told police they saw an object that seemed to be falling from an AH-64 attack helicopter into a field late Tuesday, according to a statement from Fort Hood.

“Killeen Police Department responded and located the object which was impaled into the surface of the ground. Officials immediately cordoned off the area,” the statement said.

No one was injured in the accident but approximately 100 homes had to be evacuated, according to local media.

An explosive disposal team on the scene found an inert M36 missile, a dummy version of a Hellfire missile used for training purposes.

“The M36 is an inert training device without a warhead or propulsion system and is designed to enable crews to simulate Hellfire missile engagements in the cockpit without launching from the aircraft,” the Fort Hood statement said.

The dummy missile, just like a real Hellfire weapon, weighs about 100 pounds and is roughly 64 inches long.

The cause of the incident is now under investigation.

Chapman, 57, who had been at Attica for 31 years, was placed in the protective custody unit at Wende, said Peter Cutler, spokesman for the state’s prison and parole system.

According to Cutler, the prison system “doesn’t disclose the specific reasons why an inmate may be transferred” to a new facility – but he emphasized that it was unusual for a transfer to occur following such a lengthy stint at one facility.

A former Hawaii maintenance man, Chapman received a sentence of 20 years to life on his second-degree murder plea after he shot at Lennon five times on December 8, 1980, outside the Dakota, the Manhattan apartment building where he lived. Four of those shots struck Lennon, killing him.

Attica and Wende are two of 60 state prisons considered maximum-security facilities.

Chapman was denied parole for a sixth time in September 2010. He becomes eligible for parole again in August of this year.

In his 2008 parole hearing, Chapman said he was sorry for what he had done. He said he shot and killed Lennon to help overcome his feelings of failure.

Two years ago, Yoko Ono, Lennon’s widow, renewed her objections to his parole. She is also expected to protest again in August.

Lennon would have turned 71 in October.

School Superintendent Jimmy Weeks says Michele Eaton was at Guntown Middle School to talk about an issue involving her child.

She reportedly became upset and started using profanity in the school office.

Weeks says administrators asked her to calm down, but Eaton refused and continued to get louder until a school resource officer heard her and entered the office.

He says the resource officer twice asked her to calm down, then pulled out his handcuffs to arrest her and take her into custody.

Weeks says Eaton then left the office and the school resource officer pursued her, asking her to stop because he was placing her under arrest.

The officer told Eaton that if she didn’t stop, he would use his Taser on her.

Weeks says the officer then pulled out his Taser and used it on Eaton.  When that failed to subdue her, he used it again.

Guntown Police Chief Michael Hall says Michele Eaton will be charged with disorderly conduct, public profanity, resisting arrest, and failure to comply with a law enforcement officer.

Hall says Eaton refused medical attention and was taken to the Lee County jail.  She is now free on on bond.

Law enforcement sources says Mary Kennedy, 52, was found dead in her home in Mount Kisco, New York today.

Police arrived on the scene at 1:36 p.m. EDT to investigate a possible “unattended death,” meaning no one saw the death occur.

Preliminary reports would seem to indicate that Mary Kennedy committed suicide, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Mary Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. were married in 1994. Robert filed for divorce back in May 2010. Mary was Robert’s second wife and, together, they have four children.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has reportedly been dating actress Cheryl Hines.

Three days after Robert filed divorce paperwork in 2010, Mary was arrested on suspicion of DUI after she failed a number of sobriety tests and her blood alcohol level registered at 0.11.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., 58, is the son of former Senator Robert Kennedy and the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy.

Brown’s death comes about one week after the legendary musician, considered the pioneer of Go-Go music, had been hospitalized with pneumonia.

Brown’s 1970 hit, “Bustin’ Loose,” hit number one on the MCA charts.

The song was later sampled in the 2002 Nelly song, “Hot in Herre.”

He had recently postponed numerous shows due to his failing health.

Investigators are reporting that the mysterious object did not show up on any known radar.

The FAA now acknowledges that the object could pose a serious safety hazard to planes in the area.

Radio transmissions from LiveATC.net confirm that a nervous-sounding pilot did indeed report a strange object at 5:17 p.m. local time on Monday evening.

The pilot can be heard telling air traffic control:

“A remote controlled aircraft, or what? Something just went by the other way … About 20 to 30 seconds ago. It was like a large remote-controlled aircraft.”

The corporate jet, a Cessna Citation 525 CJ1, was flying at approximately 8,000 feet above sea level when the UFO got close enough to make the pilot nervous.

“That’s an issue because now we have something in controlled airspace that poses a danger,” said former NTSB investigator Greg Feith.

Feith listened to the transmissions from the pilot and thinks the object could possibly be a military or law enforcement drone, a remote controlled aircraft, or a large bird.  Then again, it could be something else entirely.

“Was this an unmanned vehicle that was part of some sort of law enforcement operation? Was this somebody that had flown a large model aircraft inadvertently into the airspace? Or was it just [a bird that] caught the pilot’s eye so he believed it was an aircraft but could have been a very large wing span bird,” Feith said.

The announcement was made during a groundbreaking ceremony at Sanford Health‘s Pentagon facility.

Abdnor, who had been a farmer, teacher, and World War II veteran prior to entering politics, died on Wednesday, his family said in a prepared statement.

Abdnor’s attorney and friend said he died of natural causes. He had been in hospice care since May 6.

Jim Abdnor represented South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representative from January 3, 1973 to January 3, 1981.

He served one-term as Senator.

Abdnor, who grew up in South Dakota and leased a 4,000-acre ranch nearby during his time in the Senate, once said his many years of riding a tractor had helped him represent farmers in Washington.

“I’m a farmer,” Abdnor said in 1986. “I’ve dug more field dirt out of my ears than anyone in Congress. I treasure that heritage.”

Jazmin Carrera said that a sister of Jimenez, 30, told the victim’s family about the Sunday telephone call.

Jimenez was reportedly crying and extremely nervous.  He reportedly hung up on his sister and wouldn’t pick up when she tried to call him back.

Police are now searching for Arnoldo Jimenez, who is being sought on a murder charge.

Estrella Carrera, 26, was found stabbed in her bathtub, wearing the sequined cocktail dress she had worn on her wedding night.

“It was a very brutal killing,” said Capt. Joseph Ford of the Burbank Police Department on Tuesday. “We do our jobs every day, of course. But something like this really motivates you to work even harder.”

Jazmin Carrera says Jimenez had hit and abused her sister in the past.

“We never thought this would happen,” said 27-year-old Jaime Lopez, one of Carrera’s cousins. “Reality still hasn’t hit me.”

The game, which will be played on July 16, 2013, will be the ninth All-Star Game held in New York – the most of any other city – but it will be only the second one ever hosted by the New York Mets. In 1964, during Shea Stadium’s inaugural season, the Mets also hosted the Midsummer Classic.

“Competition for All-Star Games over the last five years has been enormous,” Selig said at a press conference at City Hall in Lower Manhattan. “The new ballpark, Citi Field, that was certainly a primary reason for it.

“It was their time in a new ballpark.”

Selig added that the financial uncertainty surrounding the Mets’ ownership had little to do with the decision.

“As I said at the time, I have great faith in [Fred and Jeff Wilpon],” Selig said. “No trepidation at all, and now we’re announcing an All-Star Game.”

Beginning in 2009, Citi Field’s inaugural season, speculation began that the Mets could be potential candidates to host the All-Star Game. Now, the stadium will host the game in its fifth season of existence.

“If I knew how easy this was, I would have also asked to host the World Series this year,” quipped Mets owner Fred Wilpon. “This is something you hope and dream for. It’s one of major events of the Major League Baseball calendar, with the World Series, and I’m really pleased for New York to have it here.”

In announcing the game, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the economic impact for New York will be an estimated $191.5 million. Selig estimated that 176,000 people would participate in All-Star Game related activities, which will begin July 12 and stretch through to the weekend ahead of the game.

“It will celebrate the tradition of baseball and the tradition of baseball here in New York,” Selig said. “2008 was a wonderful experience and I look forward to being here in ’13.”

Today, the search giant announced that it’s getting one step closer to a sort of creepy, Skynet-like self-awareness by unveiling the Google Knowledge Graph.

Instead of focusing on keywords and strings of characters when you perform a search, Google will now focus on “concepts” and “relationships” – and searching will never be the same again.

Google will not try to understand what you meant by your query.

For example, when you search for “orioles,” you could be looking for information about the Baltimore baseball team, or you could be doing some research on birds.

Now, when you perform that search on Google, a new window will appear on the right side of your screen asking you which entity you meant. Click on one of those options, and your results will be filtered accordingly.

Google will now be able to understand that “orioles” is more than just a keyword, it’s also a baseball team, in the American League – and that Baltimore is in Maryland, which is in the United States.

As Google explains:

When you search, you’re not just looking for a webpage. You’re looking to get answers, understand concepts and explore.

The next frontier in search is to understand real-world things and the relationships among them. So we’re building a Knowledge Graph: a huge collection of the people, places and things in the world and how they’re connected to one another.

This is how we’ll be able to tell if your search for “mercury” refers to the planet or the chemical element–and also how we can get you smarter answers to jump start your discovery.

As Ben Gomes, Google Fellow, puts it, Google is basically switching “from strings to things.”

What’s interesting is that, with this new panel appearing on the right side of your screen, it’s not entirely clear where the Google ADS are going that usually appear over there. As advertising is the main ingredient in Google’s massive revenue structure, it will be interesting to see how they’re integrated into this new interface.

The Google Knowledge Graph will be rolled out to users gradually over the next few days and weeks.

It should become self-aware and try to take over the world sometime in 2013 (OK, we’re kidding about that part…or are we?).

A Paso Robles fisherman escaped a great white shark attack on Saturday, although his kayak didn’t.

Joey Nocchi, 30, had his kayak upended and was bitten by a great white shark. Nocchi and friends James Byon and Matt Kerschke were fishing for rockfish at 1:30 p.m. local time on Saturday near Leffingwell Landing off Moonstone Beach.

“We’d just about limited out on rock cod, and Matt caught two halibut,” Nocchi said. We were cruising along together and talking.”

He was reaching for his knife when – “I got hit from underneath and started coming up out of the water. My buddies said I came out of the water 4 to 5 feet – it flipped me over the side. The shark rolled the whole kayak over, rolled me out of it, and he went over the top of it. He swam across me – his tail touched me.”

His friends guessed that the shark was 12 feet to 14 feet long.

Nocchi’s pals told him “the shark came all the way out of the water, jaws open, extra eyelids closed like they do when they’re making a kill strike.

“I swam back as fast as I could and got back on the back of the kayak. I didn’t even think to turn it back over.”

Kershke told him, “The shark knows it made a mistake. You’ll have to get off, turn the kayak over, and get back in. I’m going to go get the paddle, and I want you in the kayak when I get back.”

Nocchi said, “I did, and I got back to shore as fast as I could, even though the kayak was taking on a bunch of water from the bite. The bite looks to be around 20 inches long, more than 22 inches wide.”

Nocchi said he was glad he didn’t fish alone, and added he’d probably stay out of the ocean for a while thanks to the kayak shark attack.

“I’ll be bass fishing for a while, probably from the shore.”

Signs have now been posted along Moonstone Beach warning beach goers about the shark attack.

He’s filed a lawsuit over the incident seeking $1 million in damages from the company.

Donnell Battie says WalMart was negligent and showed deliberate indifference by failing to properly control access to the store’s P.A. system.

The lawsuit stems from that March 14, 2010 incident (which Blippitt first told you about here) at a WalMart in  Washington Township, NJ.

Just before 5 p.m., someone took control of the store’s P.A. system and announced:

“Attention WalMart customers: All black people leave the store now.”

A store manager quickly went on the intercom system and apologized for the remark. A 16-year-old was later arrested on harassment and bias intimidation charges.

Battie says he was in the store at the time and maintains that the bogus announcement led to depression, anxiety, anger, loss of sleep and appetite, paranoia, anti-social tendencies, and loss of enjoyment in activities.

His lawyer, John Klamo, says Battie had already been getting professional help for previous traumatic incidents.

“Mr. Battie is an individual who has been under care of a doctor for various disabilities dealing with his psychological makeup,” Klamo said. “He’s in WalMart and something of this nature presents its ugly head and it brings up past situations in his life that affected him.”

Greg Rossiter, a Wal-Mart spokesman, declined to comment on the specifics of the lawsuit but told msnbc.com:

“We were appalled by this incident and are amazed that anyone could be so backward and mean-spirited in this day and age. We are sorry it happened and apologized at the time to any of our customers and associates who heard it. We updated our intercom system in this store to prevent this from happening in the future.”

The FBI has opened an investigation into the multi-billion-dollar trading losses at JPMorgan Chase, increasing pressure on the bank after key U.S. agencies said they were also looking into the high-risk trades that drew regulators’ attention in April.

The company’s shareholders, meanwhile, backed CEO Jamie Dimon at the bank’s annual shareholders meeting, voting to reject a proposal to split the jobs of CEO and chairman.

In addressing the growing pressure on the bank to address the matter, Dimon said JPMorgan would pursue more disciplinary action against those responsible.

“We will do the right thing. That may well include clawbacks,” he told the media after the annual meeting.

A source familiar with the FBI probe has described it as preliminary. The investigation was seen by some as a needed step, given the ongoing debate in Washington regarding the regulation of banks.

“The FBI looks for evidence of crimes and goes after people who it alleges are criminals. They want to send people to jail. The SEC pursues all sorts of wrongdoing, imposes fines and is half as scary as the FBI,” said Erik Gordon, a professor in the law and business schools at the University of Michigan.

The bank’s trading losses have also gotten attention from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Reserve, both of which have opened inquiries into the matter.

Appearing on ABC’s The View yesterday, President Obama nailed a question about Kim Kardashian but was stumped when asked about the steamy “mommy porn” novel “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

“Which Kardashian was married for only 72 days?” co-host Joy Behar asked the president.

“That would be Kim,” Obama replied. The studio gave him a polite round of applause, and the president felt compelled to explain how he knew.

“Because he was a ball player. I know he was a ball player. That’s how I know, from watching basketball.”

Behar followed up with, “What’s the controversial sex book that’s on millions of women’s bedside tables?”

“I don’t know that,” said Obama, drawing laughter. “I’ll ask Michelle when I get home…I’ll ask Michelle when I get home what’s going on.”

Behar didn’t mention the book by name, at least not in the clip below, but one can only assume she’s referring to E.L. James’ smash hit novel.
