When Should I Throw Out My Makeup?

You will want to toss your mascara at the 3 month mark. This is important for a few reasons.

1. The product becomes very clumpy and difficult to apply for a nice eye lash finish.

2. Bacteria build up inside the tube and can cause eye infections like Pink Eye. If this ever happens to you, please toss your mascara right away, or you will reinfect your eye's. Never share your mascara with anyone, this can cause an even faster buildup of bacteria and cause the spread of bacteria to you and your friend.

Avoid pumping the wand in and out of the tube. This won't help matters either. This will only cause more air into the tube, and then more bacteria too.

Tip: Keep track of the date you purchased the mascara. Use a white label and write the date on the tube, this will keep you on track.

Question: "How can I tell if it's time to throw away my old cosmetics and makeup? "

Answer: Cosmetics - both skin care and makeup -aren't meant to grow old with you. "Products are developed to last a year or two," says Peter Pugliese, M.D., a skin physiologist in Reading, Pennsylvania. However, contamination can occur at any time, since makeup is always in contact with germ-prone areas like your eyes, mouth and fingers. In general, always toss anything that has changed color or consistency or has a bad odor. Otherwise, use these guidelines to assess the shelf life of common beauty products.

Most powders, concealers and lip balms are anhydrous (they don't contain water), so they can last for a couple of years, says Dr. Pugliese.
Cleansers and moisturizers often contain fatty acids, which can turn rancid quickly. Toss after six months.
Multiuse products such as 3-in-1 sticks and creams can spread germs from lips to eyes and cheeks. Wipe the surface before switching areas, and discard or replace after six months.
Pencils can last several years unless you wet the tip with saliva or water. To be safe, sharpen before each use.
Mascara should be tossed after three months without fail. The tube is a breeding ground for bacteria," says Dr. Pugliese.
Foundations can last up to a year if you keep your fingers away from the bottle. Instead, use a sponge to apply.
Store cosmetics in a cool, dry place outside the bathroom to extend their shelf life.

How To Choose The Right Hair Extensions For Your Wedding Day?

There are so many hair extensions companies to chose from. It can be a little overwhelming for the bridal to be. When choosing hair extensions for your wedding day, you must take a few things into consideration.

First of all, you must look at the colour of your own hair and decided if that is the colour you will want to have on your wedding day. Once you decide this, you can go ahead and purchase your extensions. It's much easier to change your hair colour, then it is to colour extensions, which I don't recommend. It is very messy and the colour may not turn out the way you want it. Sending them to a professional can be an option, but it can get very costly. You may want to choose hair extensions that match your hair exactly or, you may choose to add a highlighted effect. I would aim for no more than 2 shades lighter than your current hair colour or the colour you are going to have on your wedding day. Too much contrast can look cheap and not appealing in photo's. 2 shades lighter will give you a nice contrast and show off your bridal hairstyle's detail very nicely. It also show's very well in photographers.

You will want to decide if volume is all you need or if length is needed. Maybe both volume and length is something you desire. Purchase only 100% human hair extensions. This is very key to having hair that will look and feel natural and last a while for you. You will also be able to style your extensions and use hot elements such as a curling iron and flat iron. Choosing synthetic hair is not a good option. It just doesn't look natural and will not stand up to the use of hot elements and can actually burn the hair.

Choose the right length for your bridal look and your body type and desired bridal hairstyle. Your hairstylist will be able to tell you which length will work with your overall bridal look and features best. Hair that's too long on a small frame can look over powering. You want to be the center of attention, not your hair extensions. Finding the right balance when using hair extensions will add to your bridal look and compliment everything well. Finding a bridal Hair specialist that uses extensions often, will take the guess work out of it for you.

There is something chic and hip about sporting a vintage bridal hairstyle on your wedding day. Many brides are opting for a little vintage edge to their bridal hairstyles. These hairstyles are for the bride that likes a classic look with some wow glam factor. Makeup for this retro 50's look was all about making the eye's and lips pop. Black liner on tip of the lid's is very popular with this look. Red lips are signature for many vintage makeup looks.

This look is a classic 20's 30's. A bird cage veil is the perfect accessories to add to this look. Keep your dress in mind when choosing a vintage bridal hairstyle. You will want to make sure the the era you choose will look best for your face shape, your overall wedding theme and dress. The smoky eye was used here and adds some real drama along with a cooler red lipstick. Almost anyone can wear red lipstick. There are a few rules to follow while selecting the correct red colour for you. Generally if you have cooler undertones in your skin, you will want to stay with cooler lip colours. The same if you have warmer undertones, your makeup should stay warmer.

This classic forties looks is one of my favourites. It's sleek and sexy all at the same time. A lot of my brides like this retro look because it's away from their face but still down. A great option to a half up bridal hairstyle. False lashes were added here to give that flirty look at the corner of the eye's. The eye shadow was kept neutral, with a classic cat eye using black liner. The brow's are well defined which really brings this entire look together. Plus, red lips to top it off.

This is a pretty up-do with a vintage feel to it. I really like the hair accessories pinned and worked into this shape. The eye's are smoky and lips are subtle. I have a lot of brides that ask me if a smoky eye is appropriate for their wedding day. The answer is yes. However, there is a big difference between a night club smoky eye and a bridal smoky eye. The bridal version is less dramatic and still has a lightness to the look. Very important to keep the eye's looking light and bright.

This look is a little longer. Some brides may worry that the curl will fall out from this styles. This style is best suited for hair that is medium to medium thick. Fine hair won't hold this styles very well, unless hair extensions are used. Be sure that your hair extensions are 100% human hair. Synthetic hair will not curl and will ultimately burn. If you are in need of some extension, it is best to invest in a good set. Cheap extensions can look fake and won't last very long. Most brides opt for this makeup look. It is well rounded and has a very natural feel to it. There is balance between the eye's and lips. A beautiful bridal hair and makeup look.

A beautiful mid June wedding. Laura and her lovely sisters and friends were so awesome to work with. They were all natural beauties, that always makes my job easier:) Laura contacted me interested in bridal hair and makeup. I then found out she wanted to add some volume and length to her own hair. We added some fusion extensions about 2 weeks before her wedding. We then had her trial appointment a week before her wedding. Laura opted for a carefree down style that was totally her. Be Daring... Go With Faux Lashes!

The quality of faux eyelashes has significantly improved over the years. False eyelashes can look extremely natural, or can offer people the opportunity to create their own signature look through a variety of dramatic styles. 99% of all of my brides wear faux lashes on their wedding day. False eyelashes are quick, easy, and photograph fantastic.

There are two different types of faux eyelashes: Strip Lashes and Individual Lashes.

Strip Lashes

Strip Lashes are super quick because the faux lashes are ready to go and are adhered to a tiny strip. The strip of lashes is then applied to the skin along your lash line with eyelash adhesive.

The three most common Strip Lash styles are: Center, Corner or Full.

Center Faux Lashes - Designed to be placed directly over the center of each eye. Center Faux Lashes create a subtle illusion that the eye is open and wide.

Corner Faux Lashes - Designed to be placed on the outer corner of each eye. Corner Faux lashes are best for people who have a close-set eye shape. The added emphasis to the outer corner of the eye gives the illusion of a wider-set eye shape which creates balance.

Full Faux Lashes - Designed to cover the entire lash line. Full Faux Lashes create all over volume and length which gives a beautiful effect to the entire face.

Strip Lash Pros:

I love Strip Lashes because they offer a lash style for every fashion personality. Strip lashes are fun, inexpensive, don't smear, and are reusable.

Strip Lash Cons:

I recommend experimenting with all faux lashes prior to a special event as some people are sensitive to the eyelash adhesive which can cause irritation, redness, or swelling. If Strip Lashes are not properly applied, the corners may tend to lift.

Individual Lashes

Individual Lashes are a little trickier than Strip Lashes and must be applied with care. The most common individual lash style is referred to as a "cluster". Several individual lashes are bonded together to form a single "cluster". Each eyelash cluster is then applied directly to your natural eyelash at the base of your lash line with eyelash adhesive. Individual lashes are truly the original lash extension.

Individual Lash Pros:

Because Individual Lashes are applied to the lash itself versus the lash line, the wear is usually longer than Strip lashes.

Individual Lash Cons:

People may be sensitive to the adhesive. As with eyelash extensions, you must maintain your individual lashes. When the individual lashes start to come off, you must replace them immediately so you don't have holes in your lashes.

Natural Faux Lashes for Weddings

My favorite brand of faux eyelashes to create a "natural" look is Ardell. I particularly love #109 or #110. These lash styles are very natural without the bride feeling overwhelmed and overly made-up. Ardell lash products are available at drug and beauty supply stores nationwide including CVS, Duane Reade, Genovese, Sally's Beauty Supply, Rite Aid, Walgreen's, and Target.

Make-up artist tip: After you apply your faux lashes. Apply eyeliner along to lash line to make a nice clean edge.

The feeling I wanted to create for this bridal hair collection is a clean fresh yet modern feel with a hint of trend. We are seeing a lot of very natural hair on the runways' this season, so I wanted to add that to my collection but still keeping with a timeless classic look. Summer Dinner Menu 2

Vitello tonnato of veal tenderloin with grilled lemon & caper berries in a creamy tuna & brandy dressing.
Ricotta gnocchi tossed with fresh sage, lemon, & butter finished with aged reggiano parmesan.
Magret of duck breast roasted with thyme florets, & caramelized Niagara peaches, accompanied by roasted fennel, grilled sweet potatoes, finished with a thyme scented jus.
Summer bread pudding with mixed berries & vanilla crème anglaise

How To Look 6 Years Younger On Your Wedding Day

Now I'm not saying you look old, but following these beauty tips can make a dramatic change in your overall appearance.
Freaking out over your first grey hairs and those little lines around your eyes that you never noticed before? No one’s saying you should actually stop the clock. Embrace every stage of life! Let’s just do it with more grace, and some small changes in your routine It’s often the little things that add needless years to your look. Try one of these tips for an instant pick-me-up:

What’s aging you?

Yellowing teeth

Your smile is the first thing people will look at when talking to you. Taking that extra step in caring for those pearly white’s has its benefits. Beyond your daily brushing and flossing routine, you will want to whiten your teeth. Most drugstores kits work just as well as a pricier trip to a professional – if your teeth are sensitive, just wait a little more time between each treatment. Post-whitening, try to stay away from stain-causing drinks like coffee, dark soda, and red wine (or make sure to rinse these away with water after drinking).

Thin lips

Our lips lose volume as we age, but fake-looking collagen implants don’t seem to be the most natural answer. Instead, use a glossy lip plumping product for a temporary (but noticeable) boost. At home, keep your lips smooth and shiny by exfoliating with a washcloth, or with a mixture of brown sugar and honey. Use a lip conditioner before applying your lipstick or gloss. Use an extra dose of lip conditioner before bed. Your lips will love you for it.

Dull skin

We obsess over wrinkles, but it’s often discolouration (usually due to sun damage) that makes people look older than they are. Brighten up dull skin and help fade pigment spots with a moisturizer loaded with vitamin C (or ascorbic acid). It acts as a natural exfoliate and removes that glow-stealing layer of dead skin cells. It’s also an antioxidant, which means it helps prevent future damage. And of course, keep slathering on that sunscreen. Regular facials also help to keep the skin looking youthful. You may also want to try a herbal peel. I love the Russian peel. It’s a bit like rubbing wet sand on your face. I’ll be honest, it’s not the most comfortable, but it does the trick.

Heavy makeup

Thick foundation and powder can settle into wrinkles and will actually draw more attention to them. The key is to illuminate your skin rather than try to cover it up. Use small amounts of concealer and tinted moisturizer where you need it, and add a highlighting cream to your cheekbones and around the outer corners of your eyes to reflect light away from any lines. Stay away from dark eye shades, which can make your eye’s look older and drawn in. Less is defiantly best, but it’s how you use your products that will make the difference. A makeup lesson every 5 years will be helpful. Let’s face it, times change and with that we must alter our beauty routine and look.

Coarse hair

If grey hairs bother you, permanent hair dye will let you cover them up without straying too far from your natural shade. You may also want to go a shade lighter than your natural shade, this will actually soften your look. Hair colour has come a long way. There are new nano technologies in hair colour that will actually leave your hair in better condition than before. Revlon Professional is an amazing colour line that offers this nano molecular technology. If you aren’t ready for a complete total hair colour, you may want to give highlights a try. By adding a few highlights to the area’s where you have most of your grey, the grey will just blend in. If you’ve decided to embrace the grey, keep it silky with a gloss or an intense conditioning treatment every few weeks.

It's been a few day's since I have posted. My family life has been a little busier than normal. Plus the flu has been around our house. Let's hope spring is here!
Now for this post. The is a Marie Antoinette inspired photo shoot we did in the summer. I love working with period hairstyle's and makeup. We went down to Osgoode Hall in Toronto to shoot these pictures. I also had my wedding photo's taken at Osgoode Hall. It's beautiful and located in the heart of Downtown Toronto and it's one of the only places in the city that doesn't charge a fee, so it's free!
