The Future of Spiceworks Inc.

I just read Andrew Phelps' article on the Spiceworks Script Center (Beta) and a light bulb turned on. I have made many predictions about Spiceworks in the past and some of them became a reality.

Here is my new set of predictions of where Spiceworks is headed and if some of them come true I really think it will change the way the IT vendors conduct business with new and exsisting customers.

Ever since the Points System launched this year SpiceHeads have really been more active in the community. Don't believe me? According to compete in the past year community.spiceworks.com has seen a 109.65% increase!

BTW that is all organic traffic, because the only domain they advertise (PPC) is www.Spiceworks.com which leads you to a well crafted Landing Page.

Prediction Time:

1. Virtual Currency. Spiceworks has always been about one word: FREE. Yes I know the have a program called "MyWay" but in order to keep the community growing they have to offer companies an option that can't display ads do to whatever reason (please comment below if you know why). Anyway, ever since the Points System was put in place SpiceHeads have been doing anything they can for these Points. The more Points you have the more respect, exposure & ego boost you get from the community. Scott Alan Miller & Andrew (akp982) are "Mace" 1 away from "Pure Capsaicin" the last and highest achievement you can get (as of today). What happens when they reach that level? Will they loose interest in contributing since they reached their goal? Probably not because those two are psychos (kidding!) But with that said, what will make the other 750,000+ memebers active and keep & bring more value to advertisers (how Spiceworks probably makes 90+ % of their money).

The answer: VIRTUAL CURRANCY! Imagine this: what if you could trade your points for lets say copies of Windows 7 or Eset Nod 32 or $100 gift certificate to CDW?
2. The iTunes of IT. I attended Spiceworld Las Vegas & Greg Kattawar (VP of Dev & Co-Founder & Author of a very popular Plugin: License Manager) was speaking and kept referring to Spiceworks as "The iTunes of IT". Basically the goal is to keep you, the IT Professional in Spiceworks as long as they can.

The Microsoft License Manager Plugin has been downloaded over 5,000 times! You might say "So what? That is less than 1% of the entire community!" Well yeah but what if Spiceworks 4.5 came with that plugin pre-installed? Also what if Microsoft and Spiceworks partnered up and created a program that would allow you to buy extra licenses at a discount on the fly using your "Spiceworks Points" or a Credit Card on file? You know sort of like how iTunes has a digital music, TV, Movies, & App store? Get it?
3. Exit Strategy. When you write a business plan, you usually include a section called "Exit Strategy." It is pretty much required if you want to raise capital to start your business. According to their website, so far Spiceworks has raised a little over $13 million from Venture Capitalist (Austin Ventures & Shasta Ventures). Many of you might not know that the CEO of Spiceworks, Scott Abel is a serial entrepreneur. He has started and sold many successful companies one of which, Motive a company that created automation software for the a wide range of service providers (such as Verizon, T-Mobile, VodaPhone etc.) So the big question is: "What is Spiceworks Exit Strategy?" Choose one of the following:

- Acquired by either CDW, Microsoft, Dell or Symantec (Why? Ask in the comments and I will answer)
- IPO (highly unlikely but defiantly a possibility)
- Stay Private and Expand their product line, monetize their API

For the record, I choose #1: Acquisition at a $75-100 million dollar price tag.

Lost and Found (Circa 2007): Is Palm Dead?

I have been a Palm user since 2003. My first device was the Tungsten W with AT&T wireless internet. I was in love, I couldn't be anywhere with out it. At the time I had an LG cellphone so I had to carry both around, trust me, I had no problem doing so. That was until Sony Clie released the PEG-UX50. I was at Fry's and was playing with it for a good hour or so and then my Tungsten didn't look so hot anymore. A few weeks later I went on Amazon.com and bought it.

Now say what you want about Sony, I think their GUI's are always so user friendly, practical and simply beautiful. This device was so ahead of its' time it blew my mind, if it was a phone I would still have it to this day.

Now that brings me to some questions:

Is the Palm OS Dead?
Does it stand a chance against the Blackberry or upcoming iPhone?
Will we ever see ALP on a device?

I want to say no and here is my reasoning:

After Palm announced in late 2005 that they were developing a Treo Device to support Windows Mobile 5 the Palm Community had reasons to believe that it was over. Until the bloggers got a hold of this statement:

"Palm CEO Ed Colligan sent out an email to developers yesterday reassuring them that the company is fully committed to the Palm operating system and that the move to Windows Mobile is about "growing the Treo market," not walking away from "existing products or technology partnerships, like Palm OS." - Engadget

Ok cool, but we still have a few more problems. One being this company known as Access (formally known as PalmSource). Access has been pushing this new GUI platform called ALP that has never yet been released. They have screenshots, SDK's, whitepapers, framework diagrams

How to Fix Youtube: "an error occurred, please try again later" message on Mac OSX

So your friend sends you a link to see Tiger Wood's Farting on Youtube and you get an error basically saying "sorry you can't watch this video on your computer and don't try refreshing, clearing your cache, cookies, history, switching to Firefox or Safari because it will still not work!"

I figured out that the issue is not the browser! It is actually the Flash Plugin. Here is how you fix it:

Download and Install AppCleaner (http://freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner/)
Close all Browsers
Open AppCleaner and Click the "Others" Icon (1)
Scroll Down til you see "Flash Player.plugin" and Check it Off (2)
Hit the "Search Button" (3)
Then Hit the delete button (4)

Now all you have to do is open a Browser of your choice and go to YouTube. It will say something like "Please update Flash Player - Click Here" Click the link and install Flash. Go back to YouTube and play that video!

Introducing Spiceworks HTML Emails… via Twitter and Ustream
One of the features they’ve been asking for a while is HTML help desk emails. In other words, they didn’t like our plain text, circa-1975, looks-like-they-came-from-a-dot-matrix-printer emails that our help desk application would send out to their users with ticket updates. You know, the “your ticket has been received and is being processed” sort. So, we spruced it up AND we let users edit the html to their hearts content. With this change our nearly 750,000 IT pros can now tweak the email with their logo, colors, messages, etc. to look like the polished… and individual IT pros that they are.
To give you an inside peek at how our feedback loop goes, watch minutes 54:00 to 58:27 in this Ustream recording of a recent SpiceCorps LA meeting. They’re talking about their desire for HTML emails in Spiceworks. Jeff Keen, a SpiceWorker, is watching the Ustream and tweets Justin Dorfman, the SpiceCorps LA pioneer, with some good news: HTML emails are in 4.1. Standing ovation ensues.

As always I am flattered when any one/company mentions me, but this one especially since it validates how powerful social media is.

As you know, you can help shoppers find your products by including high quality, frequently updated product information in the form of attributes. In order to provide shoppers with the most useful information, we'll be making the "condition" attribute required starting on June 30th, 2009.

In order to keep your feeds active past this date, please remember to include the "condition" attribute for all of your items if you're not already doing so. Please include one of three values to describe your product: new, used, or refurbished.

Login to you Volusion Admin Panel
Click Inventory > Products > View All > Customize this View

Check the Following: Google_Product_Type & ProductCondition

Click Apply Preferences

Now you can Bulk Update your Products to the Condition they are in: (new, used or refurbished)

Here is how in Easy Mode:

Click Bulk Updates
Set ProductCondition = New (or Used, Refurbished, only choose 1)
Where Google_Product_Type CONTAINS FOOBAR (replace FOOBAR with your Product Type, ie Office Supplies)
Click Apply Changes

Here is an example in Advanced Mode:

UPDATE Products_Extended SET ProductCondition = 'New' WHERE ProductID IN (SELECT ProductID FROM Products_Extended WHERE Google_Product_Type = 'Office Supplies')

I just finished reading "Twitter Blog: Does Twitter Hate Advertising?" and I am so with Biz Stone on his stance against traditional web banner ads. I remember Balthaser founder Neil Balthaser said in a ABC News interview that "Banner Ads" where dead and this was circa 1998. Whether you side with him [Neil] or not he was right. But it just wasn't Flash that replaced the 468x60 static Animated GIF. It actually was Google Sponsored Links (AdWords) that turned a simple search engine into a multi-billion dollar company and eventually the #1 web property in the world.

Anyway I hear what Biz is saying. I have mocked up my own Twitter Business Advertising Model months ago. I will now go on record saying that Sponsored links are just about on it's way to the other side. With Adblock Plus being the most popular Firefox Addon since as far as I remember (day 1?) we can tell a small majority of FireFox users (49,697,406) don't like Text, Flash or image ads. They want everything for free but don't even want to see ads to the point where they install a plugin to achieve that. That is fine with me, it simply means that model is failing to reach a small number of users (49,697,406...) which will eventually turn into a large number of users and sooner than later, become an obsolete way of trying to keep services such as Gmail free by selling ads/clicks.

And you will see that the only advertising Twitter has done so far is advertise companies that are using the Twitter API to create compelling web, mobile and desktop applications. How does that benefit them? Well a whole lot believe it or not. Even though they are not making a dime doing it, what they are doing with that is investing in themselves.

They are getting users hooked to these Twitter-based services that they can run a business on, raise money for a charity, see what the world's most powerful CEO's & Executives are talking about just to name a few.

So the million dollar question: how will Twitter make money? Simple, the same way Amazon turned the concept of Cloud Computing into a profitable division of the Jeff Bezos' Empire: Build a solid platform and rent it out to the masses.

What RIM needs to do to make the 'Storm 2' Kick Ass

Now I must say I was really pumped about the Storm, just as every BlackBerry Fan Boy was. A week later after I purchased it I exchanged it for a Curve. If you want can read my review to see why I made that decision.

Bluetooth 3.0
Webkit Browser + Gears for Offline Support (So important, big reason I returned my Storm)
Trackpad
Mobile Fingerprint Sensor for Authentication
Built in 16GB Flash Memory
Mini & Micro USB ports for charging (Even though the EUC is pushing micro for the standard. A lot of U.S. phones are pushing Mini USB)

I will update this post if I think of anymore. I am not giving up on you yet RIM, but you need to catch-up quick before you loose your precious market share.

Ok so this is a touchy subject since some of my close friends still pirate digital media. I will admit I use to download movies and MP3's for free when I was in high school. I used to say "Screw them, they are making so much money who cares!?" Well I finally realized when I got out of high school that the Entertainment industry isn't just made up of wealthy Executives and super famous and rich movie/rock stars. There is an eco-system behind the scenes that a lot of a lot of people don't know about.

For instance, have you ever stayed and watched the credits after a movie? All of those people believe it or not make between $50,000 - $100,000 dollars a year. Most of the millions of dollars the movie or album makes go to the producers & studios, who took a risk and decided to shell out millions of dollars to pay all of the crew members salaries so they can make a decent living. Not to mention a quality film that millions of people can enjoy and talk about for decades.

Here is an example of the Eco-System that the entertainment provides. Let's say you are a plumber and you work for Acme Plumbing Company who had a large contract with Tower Records. As you all might know that Tower Records is no longer in business so Acme Plumbing Company had to layoff half of it's staff. By laying off half of their staff, 123 MRI Corp just took a big hit because they relied on Acme Plumbing Company to provide salaries for 50+ employees who will now have to be laid off. And last but not least a Company who provides Promotional Products for 123 MRI Corp went out of business because all of the companies they provided Promotional Products to can't afford to hand away free pens any more.

So what I am trying to get at is piracy doesn't hurt just the Rich and Powerful CEO's and Celebrities, it effects everyone. So next time you think about downloading a movie, or album think about the blue collar people behind the scenes and most importantly, your own career.

Believe it or not from time to time I get emails saying "thank you, you saved my life! Can I send you a PayPal donation!?"

My answer is and will always be: "No! Just comment or rate the post."

Most of my visitors are hit and run, meaning they did a Google search, saw my blog had something do do with their query and decided to check me out. To me that alone is better than money, the fact that I could have helped that person figure out their problem.

The truth is (and this is just my opinion), all bloggers are EGO maniacs. We check our Analytics, comments, PageRank more than we actually find out how much money they are making. Sure there are people who make a living blogging but that doesn't exclude them from being an ego maniac.

For me blogging is way to tell the world: I'm smart, I know shit so WTF I will write about it. Yes I know I have Adsense on my sites but the point I'm trying to make is: I DON'T WANT YOUR MONEY, YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID ME BY COMING HERE. Just rate and comment on my post and we can call it even!

Shafritz, a grant is, "A form of gift that entails certain obligations on the part of the grantee and expectations on the part of the grantor." Getting a government grant will get you loads of them and not fulfilling them will grant you a load of legal troubles.

If you use Spiceworks then you should know Scott Abel. If not he is the Co-Founder and CEO. I recently met him in person at Spiceworld 08 and he was a very nice, down to earth & humble guy. You can see in the video how much he loves his company and the half-a-million users that use it. I couldn't agree more that the Spiceworks community has become the more valued aspect than the actual software alone. What I loved most about his interview was the future of Spiceworks:

Open up the Platform with APIs. This will allow 3rd Party Developers to create Widgets, Mobile Apps, integrate with vendors (ie CDW) and create mash ups with services such as Google Maps.

As of now users can create "plug-ins" which is very limited but something to keep the community busy while they fix issues before launching an extensive API platform.

Ok so you or your mom/dad/aunt/uncle/boss/etc bought a Western Digital/Buffalo 1Tb External HD and decided to install the software and now you have a Green Smiley Face in your Menu bar. So you go to applications and find the "Memeo LifeAgent.app" and drag it to the trash. Restart and the Smiley face is still there!

Lets kill that beatch.

Install Memeo LifeAgent (again, I know, don't worry)
Go to and open Applications Folder > Memeo LifeAgent > Memeo LifeAgent Uninstaller.app
