Bell Jars

Originally designed for use in chemistry labs for experiments and also used by gardeners to protect delicate cuttings and seedlings, bell jars were popular as a means of display in the Victorian era and have once again made their way into mainstream culture. I love how they can be used for creating still lives in your home (and as you know i’m rather obsessed with this notion at the moment)…here are some sweet and hopefully inspiring images for you…

I thoroughly enjoyed the latest issue of Est Mag

It was nice to see stylish ways to incorporate the Pantone colour of the year Tangerine Tango coz’ lets be honest, not many of us are going to make an enormous orange statement in our homes this year but an accessory here or a quirky detail there could be delicious..

I enjoyed the feature on Caravaggion pendant lights

i loved this all-white styled cabinet – it reminded me of yesterday’s post on colour coordinated tablescapes

I wish our bedroom was as uncluttered as this one – and i like the lowslung-ness of it all

I thought the food story was beautifully shot and styled too

Monday Interior Inspiration

I’m really enjoying playing house-house with some of the details we have at home…as i mentioned the other day, i spent a day dollying up a little table with white pretties and photo frames that i sprayed. I’ve also got a botanical thing going, thanks to a gorgeous paperweight that a friend gave me (thanks Paula), my Okasie framed print that i blogged about here, an orchid that my mother in law gave us for our one year anniversary and some other bits and bobs. I get a little kick of visual joy when i walk past them (i know…pretty sad) and now i am looking for more surfaces at home to colonise with collectables. These colour coordinated schemes really tick the eye candy box for me. They’re by photographer Hilda Grahnat..

Fabulous Fabric Friday – Andrew Martin

Lucky Li is in Italy at the moment (trying to feel sorry for her, really I am) …but before she went, she prepared this post for us on a legendary UK fabrics brand Andrew Martin…

The Andrew Martin range always make me sigh. To me they’re the perfect example of combining a masculine edge with a feminine touch.

Their fabrics dovetail beautifully, with staple fabrics slotting seamlessly into all the styles – whether it be a tribal or rustic weave from their global range, or the quirky prints from their contemporary range.
Their fabrics leave no stone unturned and includes everything from leathers and hides to plush silks and velvets.

My favorite look has to be mixing up leather with florals – it just reminds me of a really solid marriage.

Easy Pasta with Prawns (and brownies for after)

Since The Captain started his course a few months ago we haven’t been going out much but tonight we’re out for supper with friends. They live in St James and the reward for climbing the trillion stairs to their home is a series of uninterrupted picture perfect ocean views. Plus they always serve us deeelicous food – last time was a homemade ragu cooked for five days (OK, OK, it was five hours – actually i have no idea how long it took, it just felt like there was so much effort put into it) – i discovered that night that a couple of star anise thrown into a meaty ragu can turn a pot of something yummy into a meal of sublime proportions.

Anyhoo…if it was our turn to entertain, i think i’d make these two dishes for supper…so easy and by the looks of things, utterly delicious! Plus you can prep the brownies the night before and simply heat them up for after. And there’s cream in the prawn and sundried tomato sauce and i’m a sucker for a cream-laden sauce.They’re from one of my favourite ever food blogs What Katie Ate – how one person can be so talented is anyone’s guess…

I would totally use the Ina Paarman sundried tomatoes in olive oil for this recipe

Farmhouse Comfort

To be perfectly honest, i haven’t been into the shabby chic look for quite a long time, probably because it’s a look i loved for so long and then kind of left behind. When The Captain and i moved in together and while we were planning our home, we worked to find a ‘style language’ that worked for both of us – ugh, that sounds so pretentious and i promise you, we didn’t sit around discussing what our new ‘style’ would be but we did have to find a half way point between my pretty-pretty stuff and his erm..beige stuff. OK, i’m being mean, but seriously people, there was a lot of brown going down! I find these pix so beautiful, filled with such lovely light and a sense of comfort. Maybe in our next life, we’ll live in a cottage in my favourite village near Hermanus and there would be lots of white and faded pretties.. sheesh,i’m blathering…take a look at the pix and enjoy

Mother’s Day Inspiration

This year my mom celebrates a major birthday and as luck would have it it’s on Mother’s Day so it’ll be a double day of happiness for her. My sister and i are planning to bake most of Saturday to make things for the afternoon tea we’re having in my mom’s honour on Sunday. I’ve been scouring my cookbooks for recipes but i think we’re mostly going to go with old favourites like scones and lemon meringue, quiche and finger sandwiches of course.My sister in law is baking cupcakes too, yum!
