We digested most of the camera and photo related items from the major brick and mortar retailer Black Friday ads in this earlier long and winding post. In this post, we summarize and grade the offers for Black Friday 2015. The Grade? A rather generous C-

DSLRs
Just like previous years under the MAP (minimum advertised pricing controlled by the manufacturers) regime, the offers are pretty much the same at authorized dealers. And they are fairly predictable too. The two main DSLR offers are a Nikon D3300 two-lens kit (18-55, 55-200) for $500. At least both lenses are VR, perhaps some progress over previous years. On the Canon front, the most common offer is the Digital Rebel T5 with 18-55 and 75-300 non-USM lenses for $400. Both of these offers have already been price-matched by the internets (see D3300 price-match and T5 price-match).

The more advanced of the DSLR kits advertised is a Nikon D7100 2-lens kit (18-55, 55-300) for $1000, perhaps a bit of an unusual combination of camera + kit lens choice, but then again, what do I know This too has been price-matched by the internets.

On the Canon side, the D-Rebel T5i has its own two lens kit for $700 with the 18-55 and 55-250 lenses [this too is now price-matched by the internets]. It is almost an ad duopoly, but the Microcenter saves the day, they are offering a Pentax K-50 2-lens kit (18-55 & 55-200) for $460 [also price-matched by the internets].

One common thread is that almost all of the 2-lens kits include manufacturer-included extras, such as bags, memory cards, and other assorted items. Market research probably tells them it increases the chances of a purchase by a consumer at a store that sees a bigger box, either in terms of size or number of items included

Mirrorless
It’s cold in here. Except for the Sony a6000 two-lens kit (18-55, 55-210) going for $700 at authorized dealers. This is featured at Best Buy and Costco. This too has been price-matched by the internets.

Fixed Lens Cameras
Compacts with RAW? Nope, not here Superzooms are featured the most, with Canon and Nikon mostly, along with some budget Samsungs. Target continues its tradition of a $100 L-series budget-superzoom Coolpix, this year it is the L340.

Second to superzooms are the compact and sub-compact consumer cameras, such as the Canon Elphs and some Coolpixies and Sony W-series.

Action cameras continue to get more of the spotlight, not just GoPros, but also “generic” manufacturers such as Vivitar and ActiveON. I don’t know if they are related to the “apply directly to the forehead” infomercials

Their 6-page Weekly Ad is now posted on their website, with a big black banner pointing to it. Or you can get to it following their usual Weekly Ad links. Unlike Staples, the combined Office Depot and Office Max will open on Thanksgiving Day.

The headliner is perhaps the return of the Duracell single-use battery promotions. Per the terms posted over there, the limit is two per customer per week and the promotion will run from 11/26 until 12/26 in 2015. You don’t get cash back, but Office Depot/Max rewards, so you have to plan how to spend the Rewards as well if you are not a frequent shopper over there. A week is defined as Sunday AM until Saturday PM.

Prices of Fixed Lens Cameras as of mid November 2015

The most action this year is happening at the M43rds to 1.5-inch sensor size segment, with Canon making an aggressive push into the segment with multiple models, Sony continuing to build up, and Panasonic coming up with an Android-cameraphone creature.

The APS-C sensor-size segment is kinda sleepy these days, with the Fuji X100T running almost uncontested in a sea of older models and niche Leicas and Shigumas.

Once upon a time this sensor-size segment was the center of the attention of the digital camera world. Now, with larger sensor prices being a lot more affordable, this segment is getting squeezed, but it’s not done with yet. Not so long ago Olympus released the Stylus 1s (not plular, that’s the name).

And now the big family picture, this includes the cameras shown above, but also cameras with 35mm full frame sensors, and cameras with tiny 1/2.x” sensors, and the Lytro Illum too. This is a huge chart below, open in new tab/window or click on the picture to see at a larger size.

Mirrorless Camera Prices as of mid November 2015

We start with the Flagship price comparison. We have a new champion. In December 2014 Sony lead the way with the $2500 a7S. This time around, Leica has taken a commanding lead with their new 35mm full frame mirrorless system, with the $7450 SL Type 601. Sony moved the price-chains forward as well, their flagship is now at $3200 with the a7R II. The other companies have the same flagship cameras as last year, and their prices have fallen.

The Growing World of Mirrorless
With the flagships out of the way, let’s take a look at the ever-increasing world of mirrorless cameras. There were so many I had to split the chart in two charts. For the two charts below, we include the body-only price of a camera if it has an official body only kit (you will see the camera’s name there, eg “Olympus E-PL6” in the chart below). If a camera does not have an official body-only kit, we include the lowest priced kit (eg “Nikon S2 with 11-27” in the chart below).

As you can see below, there is a continuum in prices, starting in the low $200s and slowly but steadily going up. While logically one would think that sensor size would have a big impact on prices, looking at it below, factoring in the 1-inch Nikons, the M43rds and the APS-C sensors, we can see that sensor sizes and prices are not always interlinked.

The Panasonic GH3 body only is included in both charts so you can virtually stitch them together. It is also a good point to split the two, as we start getting more advanced features in the group below, with the first 35mm full frame camera appearing at $1100 (Sony a7). The highest priced M43rds camera is at $1300 (Panasonic GH3), while the highest priced APS-C is at $1700 (Fuji X-T1 IR). The Leica SL Type 601 (which you can see in the Flagships chart at the top) is not included in this chart because it would significantly compress the scale, making the rest of the entries unreadable.

The “Take Pictures With” Kits
The above are the lowest prices of each camera. The chart below captures the lowest prices of “take pictures with” kits. In other words, official kits that include a camera and at least one lens. These are often purchased by someone new to a system or as a first interchangeable lens camera.

When you compare this to the December 2014 chart (the last one over there), one observation is that the race to the bottom (price wise) has cooled off, and now the battle is more in the middle. A few of the camera kits even have higher prices now than they did last year. It is perhaps not a coincidence that Canon’s two new mirrorless take-pictures-with kits are at $500 and at $700.

One thing that stands out in this chart, given the easing of the race to the price bottom is the new Olympus E-PL6 two lens kit for $400, a Costco-style bang for the buck type of a kit.

APS-C DSLR Prices as of mid November 2015

The first chart tries to be as inclusive as possible. If a DSLR has an official body only kit, the price of the body only kit is shown (only the camera’s name is in the label, eg “Pentax K-S1”). If there is no official body only kit, then the price of the lowest-priced kit (eg with 18-55 or 18-50) is shown, and marked as such (eg “Canon T5 w/18-55).

The second chart compares prices of “take pictures with” kits, in other words, official “camera + lens” kits.

Some cameras have multiple kits and options, and sometimes the 1-lens or 2-lens kits may be better bang for the buck than the body only. This however is beyond the scope of this price chart, as it would complicate things significantly in the organization and presentation (in other words, that’s another story for another day).

While the trend is typically for prices to go down or stay the same, the Sony a58 with 18-55 kit is actually $100 more expensive in this snapshot than it was in the December 2014 snapshot.

As you can see above, Pentax leads the way the two sub-$300 DSLRs. The price is the lowest price among all the different colors – some of those Pentaxes are playing darts with the color-wheel in terms of color combos

The chart below is a “take pictures with” comparison, what someone without any previous DSLR gear would buy. Many of these kits are available at mass market brick and mortar retailers or high volume internet retailers. Pentax once again wins the day price-wise, although it’s Canons and Nikons you will likely find at the mass market retailers.

Most of the camera prices are in unison at the tracked authorized retailers, thanks to MAP putting the free market in a straight-jacket. Pentax is the last semi-holdout, there is some price variance with some of their cameras/kits.
