For now, it only allows you to edit the GRUB2 menu entries: reorder, rename or add/remove entries. Since these are actually scripts which generate the boot.cfg file, Grub Customizer changes the actual script order and then generates a new boot.cfg so if you then run "sudo update-grub", your customization won't be overwritten.
Grub Customizer comes with an Ubuntu PPA (the first packages have been uploaded only a few minutes ago) so to install it in Ubuntu (Lucid, Maverick, Natty), use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install grub-customizer

Think after Installing Ubuntu 11.04

Ubuntu 11.04 aka Natty Narwhal is relase. If you upgrading to Natty Narwhal, maybe you can tweak some apss.

Install Compiz Config Manager and tweak it.

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Then search for CompizConfig Settings Manager in Dash and you'll find the Unity-related options under the "Unity" Compiz plugin. Some other options are under other plugins so check those out too.

Using CCSM, you'll be able to tweak the Unity launcher reveal mode, hide behavior, change some Unity-specific keyboard shortcuts, change the Unity launcher icon size, the top panel opacity, tweak various animations and more.

Missing a quick way to access your Downloads / Pictures / Documents / Videos folders?

Linux Mint Xfce is rolling on top of a Debian Testing package base and uses the same repositories as LMDE.

This offers the following advantages to Linux Mint Xfce:

A huge performance boost

A continuous flow of updates which allows users to keep their system up to date without waiting for new releases

A more mainstream desktop and software selection

An easier maintenance for the team which makes it easier to release in both 32-bit and 64-bit with every LMDE release

The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.

Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the abbreviation for Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

The technology has seen a large uptake in Japan and South Korea. However, in the west there has been a considerably slower adoption of QR Codes.

How can I create a QR code in Linux?

The creation of QR codes in Ubuntu is simple, albeit command-line based. You will need to install ‘qrencode‘ from the Ubuntu Software Center - you can click here to install it or search for ‘qrencode’ manually.

Once Qrencode has been successfully installed you can create QR codes using the Terminal and the following command :

qrencode -o [filename.png] ‘[text/url/information to encode]‘

To create a link to the Google homepage with the output file called ‘google.png’ and made in your homefolder you would run :
But, what about customization? “If you have no will to change it, you have no right to criticize it”, a wise man once said.

Unity after install: nice, but unoriginal!

The purpose here is not to teach you in detail how to customize the various options, but rather to just show you where they are and that they do exist. As for creating a style, that’s up to your creativity!

Unity panel/icons to follow users theme

Changing wallpaper, icons, theme.

Considered by many as the “killer app” on linux, theming returned to Ubuntu on February 17, 2011. Tweakers rejoice! The theme applies to the panels and everything else like it used to. The icons of the launcher now adheres to your chosen icon set as well. Cool. The icons in the launcher can be moved around or completely removed as well.

Unity Compiz options allow changing animations, panel transparency, size & more
The options to choose between ‘Blink’ or ‘Pulse’ animations on launching apps and apps demanding attention is available. Optionally both can be set to ‘None’. The transparency of the panel can be chosen along with the size of the launcher. Personally I set the panel a bit smaller for use on my netbook and made my panel slightly transparent because it looks sexy.

Personalized panel & launcher.

Put your own twist to your Workspaces
As I read through the comments of some users from different posts, many thought that the gray reflexion area when the Workspace Switcher is activated is too large. Although being a mandatory Icon in Unity, it does not mean users can’t change it up. Simply open Compiz Config, go to the Expo settings and there you go! Change every detail you can think of.

here is my end result

Unity Lenses: Endless possibilities!
In 11.04,2 lenses are included (previously named places). The Files Lens and the Applications Lens. Where it gets interesting is that you can create and add lenses to the shell as you please. Still in early stages of implementation, lenses add a depth of customization never before seen. Many hope once there is enough lenses out there that they will be easily available from the Software Center. Here are some great ideas from some of you awesome readers:

AskUbuntu Lens

Package Lens

Active Project Lens

RSS Lens

Inbox Lens

People Lens

And so much more!
A lot of people seem to forget that nearly all the personalization from Classic Ubuntu can still be used with Unity. Screenlets are back in development and work just fine with the new Desktop Ubuntu. The much loved Faenza Icons & Nautilus-Elementary can still rock out Natty. The almighty Compiz Fusion is in full force with all of it’s power too.

Ubuntu 11.04: same great Ubuntu, all new features.

Like what you see? We would love to see how you readers can personalize Natty! Post images in the comments bellow.

The project, which was announced as no longer being in development last November, has proven incredibly popular with users of various distributions thanks to to its refined, uncluttered interface and themeable features.

Writing on his blog Nautilus-Elementary’s chief developer, ammonkey, gave his reasons for the revival:

“Like many other distributions, Ubuntu Natty won’t support gtk3 and the gnome3 stack without adding external/testing repositories. Since gtk3 dropped the rc format, only one gtk engine is ready for gtk3 (clearlook) and one gtk theme (adwaita). Without proper theming there’s no point rushing to gtk3/gnome3 so gtk2/gnome2 still has some nice months ahead before a progressive transition.

Considering the context and to provide the best experience for Jupiter, i decided to re-activate the nautilus-elementary project. A special up-to-date version of nautilus-elementary will be released soon. The 2.32.0 version [brought] many bugs which have been hunted down for this special release.”

Ammonkey goes on to state that “..only critical bugs in nautilus-elementary would be fixed for the moment”. As such users shouldn’t expect any new features.

An updated bug-fixed package for Maverick users along with a new version for Natty testers can be installed from the Nautilus-Elementary PPA @
