Official Rules and Regulations for Entry to U2 INNOCENCE + EXPERIENCE TOUR 2015 Paris Sweepstakes

NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN THIS SWEEPSTAKES. A PURCHASE WILL NOT IMPROVE YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING. TWITTER AND/OR INSTAGRAM AND/OR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT REQUIRED. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

1. SWEEPSTAKES DESCRIPTION AND ENTRY PERIOD: The “U2 INNOCENCE + EXPERIENCE TOUR 2015 Paris Sweepstakes” TWITTER/INSTAGRAM/FACEBOOK SWEEPSTAKES (“Sweepstakes”) starts at 3:00 PM (EST) on Monday, November 9, 2015 and ends at 1:00 PM (EST) on Friday, November 13, 2015 (“Entry Period”). Entry into the Sweepstakes does not constitute entry into any other promotion, contest or sweepstakes. The Sweepstakes shall be subject to these Official Rules and by entering, all participants agree that they have read these Official Rules, the Twitter Terms of Service, and the Instagram and Facebook Terms of Use and agree to abide by and to be bound by the terms and conditions of the thereof and the decisions of Sponsor, which shall be final and binding in all respects. False and/or deceptive entries or acts shall render entrants ineligible. The Sweepstakes is not sponsored by or in any way affiliated with Twitter, Inc. (“Twitter”) or Instagram, LLC (“Instagram”) or Facebook, Inc. (“Facebook”).

2. SPONSOR: (RED), a division of The ONE Campaign, 49 West 27th Street, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10001.

3. ELIGIBILITY: ONLY LEGAL RESIDENTS OF FRANCE (COLLECTIVELY THE “TERRITORY”), WHO ARE (A) LIVING IN THE TERRITORY; (B) TWENTY-ONE (21) YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER AT THE TIME OF ENTRY; AND (C) WHO HAVE A TWITTER AND/OR INSTAGRAM AND/OR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT IN GOOD STANDING ARE OTHERWISE ELIGIBLE TO ENTER.

Employees of Sponsor and its respective parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, and related companies and agencies (collectively, the “Promotion Parties”), and their immediate families (defined as parents, children, siblings and spouse and their respective spouses, regardless of where they reside) and those living in the household of same, whether or not related, are not eligible to enter or win.

5. HOW TO ENTER: To enter, you must be a registered member of Twitter and/or Instagram and/or Facebook with an account in good standing.

To become a registered member of Twitter (registration is free), go to www.twitter.com and follow the instructions to become a registered member and create an account (“Account”). Once registered, follow (RED) on Twitter by searching the username @RED and clicking on ‘Follow’. Next, retweet one of @RED's promotional tweets from @RED for one (1) entry into the Sweepstakes (each an “Entry”). If your Twitter Account is set to “protected mode”, your updates/responses will not be visible in Sponsor’s inbox; and, therefore, will not be received by Sponsor, resulting in your failure to enter the Sweepstakes.

To become a registered member of Instagram (registration is also free), go to the App Store or Google Play and search for “Instagram,” and follow the instructions to become a registered member and create an account (“Account”). Once registered, follow (RED) on Instagram by searching the username @RED, clicking on the (RED) Account, and then clicking on ‘Follow’. Next, like one of @RED’s promotional Instagram posts from @RED for one (1) entry into the Sweepstakes.

To become a registered member of Facebook (registration is also free), go to www.facebook.com and follow the instructions to become a registered member and create an account (“Account”). Once registered, like (RED) on Facebook by searching the username (RED) and clicking on ‘Like. Next, share one of (RED)’s promotional posts from (RED) for one (1) entry into the Sweepstakes (each an “Entry”).

Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, unintelligible, illegible, or misdirected, which will be disqualified. All entries must be received before the end of the Entry Period in order to be entered. The Sponsor’s database clock will be the official time keeper for this Sweepstakes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Normal Internet access and usage charges imposed by your online service provider will apply. If you opt to receive Sponsor's tweets via your wireless mobile device (which may only be available via participating wireless carriers), standard text messaging rates, airtime and carrier charges will apply for each text message sent or received from your handset according to the terms and conditions of your service agreement with your wireless carrier. You understand that by participation in this Sweepstakes via mobile phone or text message, if you are a potential winner, the Sponsor may contact you via mobile phone or text message, which will be subject to the charges pursuant to your carrier's rate plan.

Sponsor shall have the right to disqualify any entries that Sponsor has determined, in its sole and exclusive opinion, fail to adhere to these Official Rules, the Twitter Rules or Twitter Terms of Service, or the Instagram Terms of Use, or the Facebook Statement of Rights and Responsibilities expose Sponsor to any unacceptable degree of technical, legal or financial risks or problems, uses text and/or other components in a manner objectionable to Sponsor, or its affiliates, or is otherwise deemed inappropriate, all as determined by Sponsor, in its sole discretion (including but not limited to content that Sponsor deems contains violence, is sexually explicit or otherwise offends or denigrates any group or class of people or could reflect unfavorably on any of the Promotion Parties, or which defame or invade the publicity or privacy rights of any person, living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon any person’s or entity’s personal, commercial or proprietary rights). Sponsor’s decisions are final and binding with respect to all matters relating to this Sweepstakes.

Entry must be made by the entrant. Entries made by any other individual or any entity, and/or originating at any other web site or e-mail address, including but not limited to commercial sweepstakes subscription notification and/or entering service sites, will be declared invalid and disqualified for this Sweepstakes. Tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Sweepstakes, including but not limited to the use of any device to automate the entry process or use of more than one Account to enter the Sweepstakes is prohibited and any entries deemed by Sponsor, in its sole discretion, to have been submitted in this manner will be void. In the event a dispute regarding the identity of the individual who actually submitted an entry cannot be resolved to Sponsor’s satisfaction, the affected entry(ies) will be deemed ineligible. In event of a dispute regarding the identity of the person submitting an Entry, the Entry will be deemed to be submitted by the natural person who is the “authorized account holder” assigned to the Account by Twitter or Instagram.

The Promotion Parties, Home Box Office, Inc. and its parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies Internet server(s), Internet access provider(s), and each of their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, parent corporations and advertising and promotional agencies, and all of their respective officers, directors, members, shareholders, employees and agents (collectively, “Releasees”) are not responsible for: any incorrect or inaccurate Entry information; human error; technical malfunctions; failures, omission, interruption, deletion, or defect of any telephone network, computer online systems, computer equipment, servers, providers, or software, including any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer or cell phone device relating to or resulting from participation in this Sweepstakes; inability to access any text message, email connection or web page, theft, tampering, destruction, or unauthorized access to, or alteration of Entries; Entries that are processed late or incorrectly or are incomplete or lost due to cellular device, computer or electronic malfunction or traffic congestion on the Internet or on any web site or email address, and/or cellular telephone lines; printing or other errors; and any Entries which are late, lost, incomplete, misdirected, stolen, undelivered, mutilated, illegible, or any combination thereof; or theft or destruction or corruption of Entries. Proof of submitting an Entry is not considered proof of delivery or receipt. Illegible, incomplete and duplicate Entries will be disqualified. All Entries become property of Sponsor and will not be returned. False and/or deceptive Entries or acts shall render entrants ineligible.

6. WINNER SELECTION: One winner will be selected on Friday November 13, 2015. Winners will be selected in a random in a drawing from all eligible entries received throughout the Entry Period. The drawing will be conducted by Sponsor or its designee, whose decisions are and shall be final and binding in all matters relating to this Sweepstakes. A prospective prize winner will be notified on Twitter via Direct Message to the Account and a prospective prize winner will be notified on Instagram or Facebook via a comment by (RED) on the winning photo. Sponsor is not responsible for changes to the Twitter Direct Message function that may interfere with winner notification. To claim the prize, you may be required to provide your email address. At the sole discretion of the Sponsor, disqualification, forfeiture and the selection of an alternate winner may result from any of the following: [1] potential winner’s failure to respond to notification within two (2) days after its transmission; [2] the failure of notification due to deactivation of the potential winner’s Account prior to receipt of notification; [3] potential winner’s failure to become a follower of @RED, resulting in the potential winner’s failure to receive a Direct Message or comment on Instagram post from Sponsor; [4] potential winner’s Account “protected mode” is set so that the potential winner’s updates/responses may not be visible in Sponsor’s inbox, [5] potential winner’s failure to include the Hashtag in the tweet or Instagram; [6] potential winner’s failure to provide Sponsor with satisfactory proof of age, identity and residency; [7] any other non-compliance with Rules. In the event of a prize forfeiture, the Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, award or not award the forfeited prize to an alternate winner. All taxes are solely the responsibility of the winner.

7. PRIZE: One prize will be granted of two (2) tickets to U2 INNOCENCE + EXPERIENCE TOUR 2015 Paris Show on November 14^th 2015. The approximate retail value (“ARV”) of the prize is 343 Euros. All expenses not specifically mentioned herein are not included and are solely the winner’s responsibility, including but not limited to standard internet services charges and travel expenses. Prize is not redeemable for cash or transferable, except to a surviving spouse residing in the same household. No substitution allowed except, at Sponsor’s sole discretion, a prize of equal or greater value may be substituted. The prize cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotion or offer. The prize will be awarded provided it is validly claimed by 11:59 PM on Friday November 13^th after which no alternate winner will be selected, nor unclaimed prize awarded. Any prizes pictured in point-of-sale, online, television and print advertising, promotional packaging, and other Sweepstakes materials are for illustrative purposes only. All details and other restrictions of the prize(s) not specified in these Official Rules will be determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion.

Odds of winning a prize depends upon the number of eligible entries received during the Promotion Period.

8. PRIVACY POLICY/DATA COLLECTION: Any information provided by you in connection with this Sweepstakes is subject to Sponsor’s privacy policy located at http://www.red.org/en/privacy , Twitter’s privacy policy located at https://twitter.com/privacy, and Instagram’s privacy policy located at http://instagram.com/about/legal/privacy/. By entering this Sweepstakes, each participant agrees that the Sponsor has the right to contact the participant by Twitter Direct Message or Instagram comment in order to administer and fulfill this Sweepstakes.

9. LIMITATIONS ON LIABILITY: Releasees shall not be liable to the winner or any other person for failure to supply the prize or any part thereof, by reason of any acts of God, any action(s), regulation(s), order(s) or request(s) by any governmental or quasi-governmental entity (whether or not the action(s), regulation(s), order(s) or request(s) prove(s) to be invalid), equipment failure, terrorist acts, earthquake, war, fire, flood, explosion, unusually severe weather, hurricane, embargo, labor dispute or strike (whether legal or illegal), labor or material shortage, transportation interruption of any kind, work slow-down, civil disturbance, insurrection, riot, or any other cause beyond Releasees’ sole control.

Sponsor makes no warranties, and hereby disclaims any and all warranties, express or implied, concerning any prize furnished in connection with the Sweepstakes. WITHOUT LIMITING THE GENERALITY OF THE FOREGOING, SUCH PRIZES ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AND SPONSOR HEREBY DISCLAIMS ALL SUCH WARRANTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND/OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

10. CONDITIONS: By entering this Sweepstakes and/or accepting any prize you may win, you agree, represent and warrant that: [1] you will be bound by these Official Rules and the Sponsor’s decisions, which shall be final in all respects; [2] the Entry becomes solely the Sponsor’s property and will not be acknowledged or returned; [3] you release and hold harmless the Releasees from any and all liability for claims, injuries, losses or damages of any kind, including without limitation, death and bodily injury, resulting, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the awarding, delivery, acceptance, use, misuse, possession, loss or misdirection of the prize; participation in the Sweepstakes or any Sweepstakes-related activity or travel or from any interaction with, or downloading of, computer Sweepstakes information; [4] the Releasees do not make any representation, warranty or guarantee, express or implied, relating to the Sweepstakes or the prize; [5] winner’s acceptance of the prize constitutes the grant to Sponsor and assigns of an unconditional right to use winner's Twitter or Instagram handle, name, address (city and state only), voice, likeness, photograph, biographical and prize information, statements about the promotion and/or live and taped performances of interviews for any programming, publicity, advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law; [6] in the event viruses, bugs, unauthorized human intervention, Acts of God, acts or regulations of any governmental or supra-national authority, war, national emergency, accident, fire, riot, strikes, lock-outs, industrial disputes, acts of terrorism or other matters beyond the Sponsor’s reasonable control, corrupt, prevent or impair the administration, security, fairness or proper play of the Sweepstakes, so that it cannot be conducted as originally planned, Sponsor has the right, in its sole discretion, to modify the Official Rules or to cancel, modify, terminate or suspend the Sweepstakes; and in such event, to select winners by such method as Sponsor in its sole discretion shall consider equitable; [7] the Releasees are not responsible for typographical or other errors in the offer or administration of this Sweepstakes, including but not limited to: errors in the advertising, Official Rules and selection and announcement of the winner; [8] any portion of the prize not accepted or used by the winner will be forfeited; [9] the Releasees are not responsible for any inability of the winner to accept or use the prize (or any portion thereof) for any reason [10] Sponsor has the right to modify prize award procedures at its sole discretion; [11] the Releasees are not responsible for changes to Twitter or Instagram or Facebook that may interfere with Sweepstakes or your ability to timely enter and [12] Releasees are not responsible for any failure of delivery of winner notification.

11. GENERAL: If for any reason this Sweepstakes is not capable of running as planned, or if this Sweepstakes or any email address, web site or cellular telephone number or service associated therewith (or any portion(s) thereof) becomes corrupted or does not allow the proper playing of the Sweepstakes and processing of Entries in accordance with these rules, or if infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, actions by entrants, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes, in the Sponsor’s sole opinion, corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Sweepstakes, the Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual implicated in such action and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend this Sweepstakes or any portion thereof. In the event this Sweepstakes is cancelled, the Sponsor will conduct a random drawing to award the prize from among all eligible, non-suspect Entries received prior to the time of the action or event warranting such cancellation. Inclusion in such drawing shall be each entrant’s sole and exclusive remedy under such circumstances. These Official Rules cannot be modified or amended in any way except in a written document issued in accordance with law by a duly authorized representative of Sponsor. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE OR EMAIL ADDRESS, CELLULAR TELEPHONE NUMBER OR SERVICE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE SWEEPSTAKES IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND/OR CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, THE SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES AND OTHER REMEDIES FROM ANY SUCH PERSON TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

GOVERNING LAW/JURISDICTION: ALL ISSUES AND QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE CONSTRUCTION, VALIDITY, INTERPRETATION AND ENFORCEABILITY OF THESE OFFICIAL RULES OR THE RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS OF ENTRANTS OR SPONSOR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SWEEPSTAKES SHALL BE GOVERNED BY AND CONSTRUED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INTERNAL LAWS OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK WITHOUT GIVING EFFECT TO ANY CHOICE OF LAW OF CONFLICT OF LAW RULES OR PROVISIONS THAT WOULD CAUSE THE APPLICATION OF ANY OTHER STATE’S LAWS.

13. ARBITRATION PROVISION: Any dispute arising under or in connection with this contest shall be finally settled by confidential arbitration. If a party seeks to arbitrate a dispute, such dispute will be submitted to arbitration and resolved by a single arbitrator (who is a lawyer) in accordance with the Commercial Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association then in effect as modified herein. All such arbitration will be confidential and take place at the office of the American Arbitration Association located in New York, New York. Each party is entitled to depose one fact witness and any expert witness retained by the other party and to conduct such other discovery the arbitrator deems appropriate. The arbitrator has no authority to award attorneys’ fees or punitive damages. The award or decision rendered by the arbitrator will be final, binding and conclusive and any court may enter judgment upon such award.

Connie: Birthday & ARV Anniversary

(RED) friend Connie checks in to tell us what she’s grateful for today on her birthday & ARV anniversary:

Today is a very special day to me. It is the day when the gift of life was given to me. On October 13th, I was born, Constance Ntombizodwa Mudenda, the sixth of seven girls.

I led a normal life childhood, went to school, played with my friends (I was a tom boy!), and helped my parents at home.

In my late teenage years I meet a handsome man who to me was heaven sent. I was in love! At the age of 19, and to the disappointment of my parents, I eloped with my knight in shining armor. We lived happily in our little love nest and I fell pregnant. We were very excited!

Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived. My first child was born and sickly from birth. I had a second child - he was fine - but eight months later, he fell sick and died days after his first birthday. I had my third child, who died two months after birth. My first child died a few months later. At the time, we didn’t know why tragedy was always on our doorstep.

It was not an easy path for me. Throughout my married life I was grieving.

Eight years after the death of my first child, who was the last to die, I decided to go for an HIV test - I was positive.

On this day – October 13th – 11 years ago, I was given ANOTHER gift of life – I started taking ARVs (antiretroviral medication). My CD4 count had decreased such that I need treatment and thankfully I started taking medication before I fell sick.

These ARVs have kept me alive for 11 years. I can’t even imagine how many tablets I have swallowed in this period. And I am so grateful for every life-giving pill that’s crossed my lips. I tried to count when I hit one year on medication and it added up to more than 1,400 tablets!

I’m no longer married, but I have been faithful to my true love, our relationship is till death do we part - my ARVs, my life.

Just announced: U.N. adopts 17 Global Goals

Today, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 17 global goals that could end extreme poverty and improve the lives of BILLIONS of people around the world.

But on their own, these goals won’t end poverty. We need to make sure that we monitor and evaluate the implementation of these 17 game-changing goals to ensure that leaders keep their promises. The fight isn’t over yet!

Here are the Global Goals to change the world:

Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere

You’ve seen the news: the global financial crisis, global warming, and civil wars. HOW can we be anywhere near achieving this?! Well, since 1990 we’ve more than halved the number of people living in extreme poverty. Now we need to step up efforts to completely end it by 2030.

Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture

The hunger/poverty cycle is a difficult one to break, but necessary if we want to live in a world where everyone has the opportunity to fulfill their potential. Did you know there are more than 795 million people who are hungry in the world at this exact moment? The kind of hunger that stops a body from being able to work the hours that it needs to, that stops a brain from being able to concentrate in class, that stops a person living in poverty from being able to lift themselves out of it. This goal will not only make sure everyone has enough food, but will make sure it is nutritious and sustainably produced.

Goal 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

To quote Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” That’s why access to healthcare and medicine is a top priority. Where you live should not be a barrier to the quality of healthcare you receive. Goal number 3 will also focus on drug rehabilitation and alcoholism as a way to tackle early mortality rates in developing countries.

Goal 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

Education is key to driving progress in development, from agriculture to child mortality. For example, the children of mothers who completed primary education are less likely to be at risk for stunting – 22 percent in Bangladesh and 26 percent in Indonesia. As part of ONE's Poverty is Sexist campaign, ONE has called for girls and women to be put at the heart of the development agenda, which is why we welcome the goal of gender parity for not only primary and secondary education, but also equal access to vocational and higher education.

Goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

As President Barack Obama said during his trip to Kenya, “Any nation that fails to educate its girls or employ its women and allow them to maximize their potential is doomed to fall behind the global economy.” We couldn’t agree more. It’s been shown in a recent paper that female-headed households see faster poverty reduction than male-headed households, as they are more likely to re-invest their money in the family. This goal will ensure that we take everyone forward in our fight against extreme poverty.

Goal 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

One in nine people lack access to safe water. More people have a mobile phone than a toilet. In 2015, it doesn’t seem like this should be the case. That’s why this goal will work to get access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030. It will also work to provide access to sanitation and hygiene for everyone, specifically looking at the needs of women and girls. This would be amazing!

Goal 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

600 million people in Africa don’t have access to reliable sources of energy. Addressing this problem would mean families don’t have to cook over open fires, moms don’t have to give birth in the dark, and kids don’t have to do schoolwork beside a dim, headache-inducing kerosene lamp. It won’t be an easy task, but through expanded infrastructure and upgraded technology, we can reach it. This goal will also encourage sustainable and efficient energy sources, contributing to a better world for everyone.

Seventy percent of our planet is covered by water, so it’s important to add oceans to the list. We have to work to reduce marine pollution and make sure we’re preventing future problems. It also requires us to protect and conserve marine life, so oceans continue to be healthy and productive.

This is super important. We can’t live in a world where people’s lives are at risk or where institutions are dishonest. This goal makes sure there is equal access to justice for everyone, everywhere—and will work to make sure people are safe from abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of violence. If that wasn’t enough, it also calls for transparency from governments and other institutions to reduce corruption.

15 years ago, the world was a very different place.

Life-saving HIV medicine was only available to a few. Millions died—needlessly. If you had HIV, where you lived determined whether you lived. The magic of pills that could bring someone on death’s door back to life in as little as 90 days was reserved for the few who could afford it.

15 years ago those pills cost as much as $300 a day. But over the years activists, politicians NGOs and many more fought for pharmaceutical companies to bring down the cost of this medicine. It's simple - the cheaper the pills, the more accessible life-saving medicine becomes.

Today these pills cost roughly 30 cents a day.

Incredible progress has been made in the fight against AIDS. 15 million people are now on life-saving HIV treatment — more people than ever before. The global response to HIV has averted 30 million new HIV infections and nearly 8 million AIDS-related deaths since 2000. This is incredible progress but it’s not enough.

Nearly 37 million people are still living with HIV/AIDS — a treatable and preventable disease. Every day 600 babies are born with HIV. But they don’t have to be.

This is a big week. World leaders are gathering to adopt the 'Global Goals' — an ambitious shared strategy aimed at ending extreme poverty. One of these goals, known as Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 aims to "ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages," and includes a target of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

It's an ambitious goal, and it should be. We can achieve it, but only if we make sure our leaders deliver on their promises and step up to do more… reminding us how critical our mission is and how time is of the absolute essence when lives are on the line.

Let's commit to beat this preventable and treatable disease once and for all.

Individuals who have previously won a prize from Sponsor in any contest or sweepstakes during the previous one (1) year period are ineligible to enter the Contest. All applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. The winner must respond to (RED) at the e-mail address provided in the notification within ONE (1) HOUR from the time said award notification was sent to avoid forfeiture of the Prize.

The potential winner may be required to sign/acknowledge and return applicable tax forms, an Affidavit of Eligibility, Release of Liability and (where legal) Publicity Release to Sponsor shortly after receiving the award notification. This past week, I had the privilege of traveling to Africa with (RED) co-founder Bono and other (RED) champions to witness first-hand the impact of programs we support that enable people to access greater health and prosperity.

In particular, it was a proud moment for (RED) to see the hugely impressive AIDS programs in Rwanda, which benefit directly from the funds that our partners have generated. Rwanda was (RED)'s first grantee country in 2006 and has since received $79 million from (RED), which accounts for 11.6% of the Global Fund's entire AIDS grant to the country.

Rwanda's miraculous post genocide progress, on so many levels, is exemplified by its tackling of AIDS. The country has a relatively low prevalence rate of 2.8% and is close to virtual elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV. We visited the main teaching hospital (CHUK) in Kigali, a second visit for Bono who witnessed alongside Nurse Florence (he christened her the 'real Florence Nightingale' in 2006) the transformation of the pediatric ward. In 2006, each single bed held 3 children with their mothers perched on the sides trying to care for them. This time, every child received care in his or her very own bed. It was incredible to hear Florence describe the impact that Global Fund money has had in changing this dynamic – not just expanding access to treatment, but also providing education and support for the healthcare providers

In the afternoon we went to the (RED)-supported Kimisagara Youth Center, which not only provides young people with free testing and counseling services, but also houses a training center for peer education, enabling a team of youth leaders to educate their peers on sexual reproductive health. Cutting through taboos of speaking about sex, they were honest, open, humorous and absolutely engaging. One of the most impressive things about Rwanda is its commitment to community programs like this – one of the key drivers for its success in fighting AIDS. This is also evident in rural areas with volunteer community health workers making monthly visits to their HIV positive clients, counseling them on the importance of adherence to the lifesaving drugs. We visited the home of Godlieve and felt her fear that without adequate funding, her life saving medication may go away.

Having seen these programs first hand just a few days ago, I’m reminded of how critical our mission is, and how time is of the absolute essence when lives are on the line. As the clock ticks down to the next Global Fund Replenishment - which will call on world leaders, foundations, and of course, the private sector, to continue to fund the fight for the next three years - (RED) will remain laser focused on generating cash and consciousness to help end AIDS.

INC(RED)IBLE NEWS: 15 Million People on HIV Treatment

Today, the world is celebrating an incredible milestone in the AIDS fight. 15 million people living with HIV are now on life-saving treatment — a goal met 9 months ahead of schedule — according to a new UNAIDS report.

This milestone was deemed impossible when the MDGs were set in 2000. Every day, 8,500 people were becoming newly infected with HIV and 4,300 people were dying of AIDS-related illnesses. If you had HIV, where you lived determined whether you lived. Life-saving medicine was only available to a few. Millions died—needlessly.

Today the world was a very different place. Today’s new UNAIDS report shows how far we’ve come since 2000: HIV infections have fallen by 35% and AIDS-related deaths by 41%. 30 million infections and nearly 8 million AIDS-related deaths have been averted – making the HIV global response one of the best investments in global health and development.

This is incredible progress. But it’s not enough. Today 36.9 million people are living with HIV/AIDS — a treatable and preventable disease. And 2 million people, including 220,000 children, became newly infected last year alone. If an HIV positive mom has access to treatment, she can stop the virus from passing to her child. We can’t stop now.

If we act now, we can ensure that no child is born with HIV, and that their moms stay healthy too.

It's finally here! For the entire month of June, where and what you eat and drink can fight AIDS. Let's EAT (RED) DRINK (RED) SAVE LIVES!

It costs as little as 40¢ for two life-saving pills that, when taken daily, can prevent an HIV+ mom from passing the virus to her unborn baby. Still, 650 babies are needlessly born with the virus every day. EAT (RED) DRINK (RED) SAVE LIVES rallies the culinary world to help get that number nearer to zero.

It all kicked off last night at The (RED) Supper, presented by Infiniti USA. A monstrous thunderstorm didn't stand in our way as 1,000 people gathered on Pier 26 for an incredible evening to #86AIDS. 10 all-star chefs teamed up in twos to curate an incredible meal, paired with wines from the Francis Ford Coppola Winery Diamond Collection. The Roots also gave an unforgettable performance. Thank you to all of our partners and sponsors who made this evening possible.

Proof of “tweeting” or “instagramming” Entry will not be deemed to be proof of receipt by Sponsor. Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, unintelligible, illegible, or misdirected, which will be disqualified. All entries must be received before the end of the Entry Period in order to be entered. The Sponsor’s database clock will be the official time keeper for this Sweepstakes.

Winners will be selected in a random in a drawing from all eligible Entries received throughout the Entry Period. The drawing will be conducted by Sponsor or its designee, whose decisions are and shall be final and binding in all matters relating to this Sweepstakes. A prospective prize winner will be notified on Twitter via Direct Message to the Account and a prospective prize winner will be notified on Instagram via a comment by (RED) on the winning photo. 7. PRIZE: Five (8) Grand Prizes will be awarded. Each Grand Prize consists of two (2) tickets to The (RED) Supper. The approximate retail value (“ARV”) of each Grand Prize is US $295 and the total ARV of all Grand Prizes is US$4,720. All expenses not specifically mentioned herein are not included and are solely the winner’s responsibility, including but not limited to standard internet services charges and travel expenses. Prize is not redeemable for cash or transferable, except to a surviving spouse residing in the same household. No substitution allowed except, at Sponsor’s sole discretion, a prize of equal or greater value may be substituted. The prize cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotion or offer. The prize will be awarded provided it is validly claimed by 11:59 PM on May 29, 2015, after which no alternate winner will be selected, nor unclaimed prize awarded. 13. ARBITRATION PROVISION: Any dispute arising under or in connection with this contest shall be finally settled by confidential arbitration. If a party seeks to arbitrate a dispute, such dispute will be submitted to arbitration and resolved by a single arbitrator (who is a lawyer) in accordance with the Commercial Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association then in effect as modified herein. All such arbitration will be confidential and take place at the office of the American Arbitration Association located in New York, New York. Each party is entitled to depose one fact witness and any expert witness retained by the other party and to conduct such other discovery the arbitrator deems appropriate. Meet Rehema

Temeke Hospital, which receives funding from (RED)-supported Global Fund grants, is a district hospital in one of the poorest districts of Dar es Salaam. The hospital sees roughly 1,350 patients a day and provides both pediatric and adult medical, surgical, pharmacology and laboratory services. The hospital has a separate HIV/TB clinic and also provides PMTCT care at the antenatal clinic. Temeke Hospital, like many others in the region, has integrated HIV and TB services, an important provision for people like Rehema.

Not too long ago, Rehema was forced to turn to prostitution to provide for her family. Without any resources, Rehema was vulnerable to the hazards of the job, and one day she finally fell so ill that she sought help. After receiving a joint TB/ HIV diagnosis, and learning that there was treatment available, Rehema vowed to take her life back into her own hands.

Thanks to access to care and counseling, Rehema was given access to the tools she needed to lead a healthy HIV+ life. Having been saved by the healthcare workers, Rehema wanted to give back and soon became a peer educator, after which she trained as a nurse. Today, thanks to access to treatment and skilled healthcare workers, more people in even the poorest communities are getting the medication and tools they need to live healthy and productive lives.

Rethinking the way we approach HIV/AIDS in girls and young women

With over 1,000 new infections each day, young women and adolescent girls are the biggest risk group for HIV infection in the world. Nowhere is this risk greater than sub Saharan Africa, where girls account for 80% of all new infections among adolescents, and HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death for girls and women age 15-49. Despite these stark numbers, policymakers in the HIV/AIDS community have historically neglected young women, often positioning them as an afterthought. What has resulted, in the words of Global Fund Executive Director Mark Dybul, is a “fundamental failure of adolescent girls and women.”

I recently attended two events on this issue—one hosted by amfAR and the other sponsored by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Admittedly, I was skeptical to attend, afraid to hear a clichéd recycling of phrases about needing to do better. Yet what I uncovered was a refreshingly honest discussion of the complicated nuances of HIV/AIDS in women and girls, as well as demand for more holistic solutions. Here are the five most important themes I heard at the events:
Power Structures

If we hope to eliminate HIV/AIDS in young girls and women, we must seek out new approaches that address the structural drivers that increase female HIV risk, including poverty, violence, a lack of education, and the gendered distribution of power in society. Secured by information access, technology, income, education, social capital, freedom from violence, and a voice, this power infiltrates all levels of society, from government to communities to families to personal relationships.

Too often, women’s access to power is compromised by their vulnerability to physical and sexual violence. Compared to older women, adolescent girls are at a much greater risk– studies in over 80 countries found that 30% of girls age 15-19 have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV), and 25% report that their first sexual experience was involuntary.

In order to lift women from cycles of violence and HIV/AIDS, it is crucial to empower them by fostering and harnessing their social, cognitive, and economic assets. At CSIS, Judith Bruce of the Population Council emphasized the need to provide girls and women with protective means to build upon these assets. Comprised of friends, a mentor, a safety plan, personal identification, a savings plan, and financial literacy, these “toolkits” will enable girls to develop skills, friendships, and social networks that will help protect them from violence and risk of disease.

Women as a Vital Resource

Investing in women in such a way will not only alleviate the risk of HIV/AIDS, but also contribute to broader development goals. As Mark Dybul shared at CSIS, 92% of every dollar invested in women is reinvested back into communities, in contrast to just 42% for men. Just last month, the value of investing in women was similarly stressed in ONE’s Poverty is Sexist: increasing the amount spent on key health interventions for women and children by just $5 per person per year, it reported, could yield a nine-foldreturn on investment.

Multisectoral Cooperation

At CSIS, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Debbie Birx offered an unsettling anecdote, in which an African Minister of Finance told her, “The Minister of Health never talks to me about HIV…is it still a problem?” In many parts of the world, this sort of miscommunication within governments is unfortunately the norm. In order to ensure improved outcomes for women, it will be critical for health ministries to collaborate and engage with other sectors, including finance, justice, women’s affairs, agriculture, and education. Fortifying the link between health and education will be particularly imperative to protect women, as better educated women are more likely to delay marriage, earn better incomes, and have greater decision-maker power in relationships.

Perhaps one of most illustrative examples of multisectoral cooperation in the global health space today is DREAMS, an initiative recently launched by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Nike. With over $200 million in funding, DREAMS aims to use education and increased economic opportunities to lift girls from the burdens of poverty and disease, with the ultimate goal of reducing HIV-incidence in high-burden areas by 40% in three years.

Increased Emphasis on the Science of HIV/AIDS

Better understanding the science of HIV/AIDS is also essential for designing better programs to keep girls healthy. At amfAR, the NIH’s Gina Brown revealed that the female anatomy makes women more susceptible to HIV infection than that of men, as semen can remain in the vagina for a prolonged period of time and the tissue of the vaginal lining contains certain types of cells that HIV can easily enter. For this reason, a female receptive partner’s risk of HIV is almost 13 times greater than that of an intrusive male partner. Likewise, amfAR VP Rowena Johnston explained how estrogen dramatically affects the way in which the HIV virus inhibits human DNA and can yield more serious side-effects to treatment.

A better understanding of the science of HIV/AIDS can help encourage the development of more targeted and innovative therapies for women and girls. At amfAR, Sharon Hillier of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine discussed some of these new options, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), vaginal rings, and gel products which have yielded an almost 40% reduction in infection in clinical trials.

Data & Numbers

The final, yet arguably most important, theme was the importance of data as an instrument of both motivation and evaluation for HIV/AIDS-related programs. As shared by Debbie Birx at CSIS, PEPFAR has begun using enhanced data tools to strategically target the geographic areas and populations most in need. Crowning herself a “data diva,” Birx lauded the recent launch of PEPFAR’s Dashboards, an online platform which enables everyone to view and utilize PEPFAR data, optimizing transparency, mutual accountability, and the actionable potential of information. It is only with such accessible data, speakers at both events agreed, that we will obtain the political impetus to invest in women’s health and the analytical capacity to track progress and prove that the investments we are making are worth it.

The girls and young women around the world affected by HIV/AIDS are undoubtedly worth it. Let’s now invest in the data, the scientific research, the multisectoral cooperation, the expanded opportunities, and the more equitable sociopolitical structures to prove it.
