What makes Bono tick? A 1-hour interview with Charlie Rose

Bono is just as much an activist as he is a rock star – you see it in the work he does with (RED) and (RED)’s sister organization, ONE. But for those of you who know him mostly as the front man of U2, you may be wondering: What drives him to care about poverty and AIDS so much?

Acclaimed interviewer and broadcast journalist Charlie Rose set out to find the answer to this question and more during his nearly hour-long interview with Bono on his activism, rock music, business and more.

One of the first things he does is clarify his thoughts on poverty. Like Nelson Mandela, he believes “poverty is not a natural condition,” and that it is “manmade.” To him, activism is about fighting injustice. “I’ve always been on a justice tip,” he said, “rather than a charity one.”

Bono discusses the impact of US foreign assistance. “The United States — it’s a heroic story. You are way out in front in the fight against AIDS. Of the 8 million people that are on anti-retroviral drugs, most of them are alive because of America — Do Americans know that?” he says. “Do people know that they’re part of this incredible story? To me, this is as heroic as your intervention in the Second World War. And no lives down, just lives saved.”

The discussion also reveals some illuminating things about Bono, like his thoughts on religion and his relationship with Bill Gates. He even talks about his songwriting process and the work on U2′s next album.

The interview was aired on Wednesday night on PBS’s The Charlie Rose show, which is now available to watch in the player above. Happy Mother's Day to everyone celebrating! What better day to share an update on our friend Connie from Zambia.

After losing all three of her children to HIV in the 90's, Connie was tested for HIV and went on treatment. She's alive today and gave birth last November to her baby girl, Lubona. During her pregnancy, Connie received the same type of treatment (RED) funds to help prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child. Lubona has tested HIV free and is a happy & healthy baby – a true testament to the possibility of an AIDS FREE GENERATION.

Global Fund Asks for $15 billion to Save Lives and Control Diseases

15 Instagram buy-outs; salaries for 1,020 Lebron Jameses, 600 Kobe Bryants, and 1,245 Albert Pujolses; 30 million iPads. These are just a few of the things you could have purchased if you had a spare $15 billion burning a hole in your pocket recently (and really, don’t we all?). But last week, the Global Fund added a big ticket item to that list that’s much more compelling: the chance to help save lives and control AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in hundreds of countries around the world.

We’ll take this over iPads any day of the week.

As donors met last week in Brussels, the Global Fund unveiled $15 billion as its “replenishment ask”— the amount it hopes to raise from interested stakeholders over the next three years (2014 to 2016) to support its work. Readers who have followed this issue with us for a while will know that this is a process that the Global Fund goes through every three years. In the last replenishment for 2011 to 2013, they succeeded in getting commitments totaling just under $12 billion, so this year’s replenishment will represent a big step up.

In a time of economic restraint in most donor capitals around the world, coming up with $15 billion will require more than just digging under the couch cushions. It will require donors like the US to fight back against potential budget cuts, and we’ll get our first clue from the US when President Obama’s 2014 budget is released (find out what the budget said!) . It will require Europeans to step up their commitments, just as we asked of them in our World AIDS Day 2012 report. It will require new donors, both from Europe and from emerging economies, to invest for the first time. It will require African nations, whose citizens are some of the most heavily impacted by these diseases and whose economies are in some cases growing the fastest, to recommit to spending 15 percent of their national budgets on health. It will require new partnerships with the private, faith and NGO sectors. And it will absolutely require ONE members from around the world using their voices, putting pressure on each of these groups, and letting them know that they will be celebrated and supported for doing the right thing.

The work will be hard. But if we can to find a way to get the Global Fund the $15 billion it needs, and if we can convince other actors to continue scaling up their other health investments, we can achieve some pretty historic things. In fact, the Global Fund estimates that if collectively we could help fill the majority of a global $87 million funding gap for the three diseases, the world could look quite different by 2016:

- More than 18 million people in affected countries could receive antiretroviral treatment by 2016

- 17 million patients with TB and with multidrug-resistant TB could receive treatment, saving almost 6 million lives between 2014-2016.

- Millions of new cases of malaria would be prevented, saving approximately 196,000 additional lives each year than could be saved with current funding levels.

- More than 1 million new HIV infections could be prevented each year.

That’s a world so beautiful it would be worth Instagramming 15 times over. We hope you’ll join us in this fight.

Amazing Africa: World Water Day and World TB Day

This weekend is a busy one: World Water Day is on Friday, March 22nd and World Tuberculosis Day is on Sunday March 24th. To celebrate the progress we’ve made and to continue raising awareness, we’ve put together a mash-up Amazing Africa post to showcase just how much progress has been made and what we can do to keep it up. All stats are from Water.org and Stop TB Partnership, and all photos are from ONE.org.

Sharing information is also important. This health worker in Kenya can’t wait to teach community members about how to prevent and treat diseases like TB.

Even though this little guy doesn’t seem to be enjoying his doctor’s visit, early vaccinations against TB are most effective in preventing the illness in children.

Clean, running water is also key to keeping people disease-free. This hand-washing station is the perfect place to start healthy new habits: Washing hands with soap has been found to reduce diarrhea by more than 40%.

This mother in Ghana smiles as she effortlessly pumps fresh water for her family. 443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related illness for children-meaning, clean water directly and positively affects education.

Pharmacy workers play a big role in helping diagnosis TB; treatment is more effective if started earlier.

Routine check-ups help catch symptoms before they worsen or spread. Access to clinics like this one in Tanzania give communities the resources they need to get and continue treatment. This is helping further the goal to eradicate tuberculosis in our lifetime.

Women spend 200 million hours a day worldwide collecting water for their families. New water sanitation and well creation will allow for more time spent in classrooms and the marketplace.

This little one is exploring during his weigh-in prior to getting immunized. The TB mortality rate has decreased 41% since 1990 because of early measures like infant immunization.

There is much to be excited about in regards to clean water access: Investment in safe drinking water and sanitation contributes to economic growth. For each $1 invested, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates returns of $3 – $34, depending on the region and technology.

This little cutie kept his smile for the entirety of his check-up and for good reason: An estimated 1.3 million lives were saved globally between 2005 and 2011 by implementing collaborative TB/HIV activities.

With new community wells in Tanzania, there’s plenty of water to go around. Lack of community involvement causes 50% of other projects to fail, so working to promote a solution that empowers the community is key.

On February 26th, Bono spoke at TED to show the progress in the fight against extreme poverty… and what we need to do next. Bono shares the new facts about fighting global poverty: “Forget the rock opera, forget the bombast, my usual tricks. The only thing singing today will be the facts.”

Eight million AIDS patients have been receiving retroviral drugs
Malaria deaths have been cut in some countries by by 75%
Child mortality rate of kids under 5 is down by 2.65 million deaths a year
Extreme poverty declined from 43% in 1990 to 33% in 2000 to 21% by 2010.

Extreme poverty has been cut in half in the last 20 years, and the facts show that we can get it to virtually zero within a generation — but only if we act.

“Let’s think about that,” he says. “Have you read anything, anywhere in the last week that is as remotely as important as that number? It’s great news, and it drives me nuts most people don’t know this.”

“If you live on less than $1.25 a day, this is not just data. This is everything. If you’re a parent who wants the best for your kids, and I am, this rapid transition is a route out of despair and into hope.”

Baby ‘cured’ of AIDS: What it means for the global AIDS response

With the exception of World AIDS Day, it’s rare to see anything related to HIV/AIDS trending on Twitter, and even rarer still for the trending to happen because of good news. But the world—online and offline—was abuzz on Monday with exciting news out of the CROI Conference: a young girl in Mississippi had been “functionally cured” of her HIV infection.

Her cure came not through something outrageously expensive or experimental, but through a treatment regimen of triple-drug antiretroviral therapy given to her within 30 hours of birth, even before doctors had confirmed her HIV status—a proactively aggressive treatment strategy that appears to have paid unprecedented dividends. The mother and her daughter soon dropped out of the medical system, and the mother stopped giving her daughter antiretroviral drugs. When they eventually returned to the medical center, however, doctors found only scant traces of HIV in her daughter’s system, and the virus had not able to replicate itself and spread, even without sustained treatment.

There are still many things we don’t know about this study—whether this functional cure will be lifelong, whether it applies only to pediatric cases or could also work for very newly-infected adolescents and adults, exactly how the drugs defeated the virus, and so on. And replicating this case, particularly in resource-limited settings across the developing world might be quite challenging. In most sub-Saharan African countries, infant HIV testing is done within weeks, not hours, of birth—a time delay which might mitigate the impacts of treatment — and triple-drug treatment regimens are often not prescribed in favor of simpler, less expensive formulations. The anecdote also highlights many health systems challenges, including a clear reminder via the mother of how often people drop in and out of the HIV continuum of care, making patient monitoring and treatment more challenging.

But this study should offer momentum for the global AIDS community because it provides one more finding about how our existing tools can have new and even groundbreaking impact in the fight against HIV, just as we have learned over the last two years that antiretroviral treatment effectively serves as prevention and that medical circumcision has significant prevention benefits for men. It should also give advocates a good excuse to remind those who are just tuning in to this story for the first time that, aside from curing pediatric AIDS, we already have simple treatments available to prevent the transmission of HIV from mother-to-child in 95 percent or more of cases. The road toward achieving the beginning of the end of AIDS will inevitably be a long one, but the news out of Mississippi should propel us onward with a bit of extra hope this week.

Amazing Africa: The Power of the Global Fund

In this week’s Amazing Africa, we’re paying homage to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, an organization that is severely at risk of being cut by Congress, although it has helped more than 4.2 million people receive HIV treatment, 9.7 million receive anti-tuberculosis medication and more than 310 million receive insecticide nets to prevent malaria.

We want to give you a first-hand look at the families, hospitals and communities that have benefitted from Global Fund support. As you look through think to yourself: This program could get cut from the US budget!

This hospital in Liberia, supported through The Global Fund, is integral in supporting women with HIV.

Workers in Tanzania are hard at work packaging the ARVs, provided by The Global Fund, that will be given out to patients at local health centers.

This pharmacist counting out lifesaving medication to give to his patients.

All smiles as this hospital employee gets ready to give Harriet her first-ever dose of ARVs – truly an awesome moment.

ONE and (RED) visited The Tema Hospital in Ghana, where 96% of babies born in their care are HIV-free thanks to The Global Fund.

Baby Michael is HIV-free thanks to The Global Fund-supported treatment his mother, Princess, received while pregnant.

Though her son Michael was lucky to be born HIV-free, her friend’s son was not so fortunate; his mother faulted on her medication and he was born with the disease. After her friend passed, Princess took in the 5-month little boy and cares for him as her own.

Both Bethwel Nyangweso and his wife are HIV-positive but thanks to The Global Fund-sponsored medicine, they were able to have another son who is HIV-free.

In Ethiopia, The Global Fund supports programs that train women as health extension workers, giving them the resources to help and their communities the access to healthcare. It all comes full circle!

Bono at TED: Eliminating poverty is possible by 2030

ONE Cofounder Bono made the case that eliminating extreme poverty is possible by 2030 during his speech at the 2013 TED Conference in Long Beach, Calif., yesterday. The 2005 TED Prize winner said that transparency, coupled with information technology, is helping to power the fight to the finish – and a new generation of fact-based activists, or “factivists,” could lead the way.

Bono encouraged the audience of changemakers to fight apathy, cynicism and inertia and use evidence and statistics to map our path to the “zero zone.” Extreme poverty has already been cut in half over the past 20 years – and by 2030, the number of people living in extreme poverty, those living on less than $1.25 a day, would be virtually zero. If we continue on the current trajectory of progress, we can truly make it possible.

“Why aren’t we jumping up and down about this? And 2028, 2030… that’s around the corner,” said Bono. “That’s only 3 Rolling Stones farewell tours away. Well, the opportunity is real, but so is the jeopardy. We can’t get this done until we really accept that we can get this done. Look at this graph. It’s called inertia… It’s how we screw it up. This one is really beautiful… it’s called Momentum.”

Bono wrapped up his speech with a call for citizens of the world to join ONE. “We in the ONE campaign would love you to be contagious, spread it, share it, pass it on,” he said. “By doing so, you will join us and countless others in what I truly believe is the greatest adventure ever taken. The ever-demanding journey of equality. Could we answer that clarion call of Nelson Mandela with science, reason, facts and dare I say it, emotion?”

With Valentine’s Day just a few days away, it’s not surprising to hear phrases like this on the streets of DC. But what is surprising is that they’re not coming from young couples in love—no, they’re coming from the mouths of global health advocates and campaigners. So what’s with all the sentimental feelings and thinly veiled insecurity?

As it turns out, President Obama and his Administration are in the final weeks of deciding what their 2014 budget request will look like. One of the many line items they’ll be debating is how much love (money) to give to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria—one of the most attractive and effective tools we have to fight these three diseases. And now more than ever, we need you to weigh in on their relationship.

President Obama and the Global Fund began as a great love story. After years of the US refusing to settle down, only ever making one-year funding commitments, Obama made the US’ first-ever multi-year commitment to the Fund in 2010, giving her the long-term stability she craved to help support life-saving programs across the developing world. This multi-year commitment included a $1.65 billion request from Obama in 2013—the largest ever commitment from the US in one year, and a strong sign of love for the Fund.

After three years of bliss, however, there are signs that the relationship might be at risk. In this budgetary environment, the Administration will be forced to make tradeoffs—and likely cuts—that make the Fund a target. ONE and many of our partners are asking that the US hold its contribution for 2014 steady at $1.65 billion. We’re asking this not only because it will help the Fund save lives; it’s also a particularly important year for the US to show leadership to other donors around the world, who will be debating their own commitments to the Fund over the next three years ahead of a global love-in (replenishment meeting) this fall.

When the US request comes out in March, it will be one of the first indications from a major donor about what the Fund can expect to raise and achieve over the next three years. For the first time in decades, there are new tools and investment opportunities that suggest that, with scaled up funding, we could not only control but begin to defeat AIDS, TB, and malaria. But with a cut to US funding, we will lose momentum against these diseases, in some cases allowing them to resurge in places where they are currently under control.

So this Valentine’s Day, we need you to help keep the love alive. Help remind President Obama why he loves the Global Fund—all those lives she’s saved, all the smart reforms she’s put in place—and ask him to keep the Fund at $1.65 billion for 2014.

We just received the best email from our friend Connie in Zambia.

After losing all three of her children to HIV in the 90's, Connie was tested for HIV and went on treatment. She's alive today and gave birth last November to her baby girl, Lubona. With this pregnancy she received the same treatment (RED)funds to help prevent the transmission of HIV from moms to their babies – a true testament to the possibility of an AIDS FREE GENERATION.

At my job at ONE, I get a chance to use my creativity for good every single day. And I have the luxury of being surrounded by a group of really talented and creative people all doing the same. What we all know is how important storytelling is in attracting people to the fight against extreme poverty. But if there’s one lesson I’ve learned time and again, it’s that the best ideas often come not from the professionals, but from the most unexpected places.

That’s why I’m especially excited to announce a contest we just launched with Zooppa – a global social network where creative folks submit work to win prizes. Together with our friends at iStockphoto, we’re offering $20,000 in prizes — pretty incredible, right?

The theme is “ONE thing we can all agree on,” a play on the fact that uncommon bedfellows often join together in the fight against extreme poverty. We’re looking for video and print submissions that bring opposites together — you can be edgy, funny, ridiculous, in-your-face – but whatever you do, make it super engaging. Don’t wallow in doom and gloom, but rather celebrate what we can make happen when we work together.

If video is your thing, create a short piece (three minutes or less) that brings opposites together to fight poverty. They could be athletes from opposing teams, a superhero and super villain, feuding neighbors or even comically mismatched roommates.

If print is more your style, express the same point through a digital version of your still artwork.

The first 500 entrants to submit their briefs before January 23 will receive free credits toward photos, illustrations, video or music from iStockphoto to help tell their stories.
