Currently, NASA’s budget barely surpasses 0.5 percent of the Federal budget, and has seen a steady decline in the proportions of its funding, now reaching all-time lows. The cultural mindset brought on by NASA has allowed us to reap the benefits of economic growth, creating an influx of people wanting to become scientists and engineers.

There is no question that the government has money to fund NASA: $850 billion was spent on the bank bailout, several hundred billion dollars more than the 53 year running budget of NASA. If we want to invest in our future, we must fund NASA at higher levels.

Tomorrow is gone without NASA. Please at least double NASA’s annual budget, and continue to support the most inspirational program in the country.

Moderate Republicans in this country need to see how ridiculous Santorum looks when compared to someone who is both reasonable and compassionate. They need to be embarrassed. I want them to physically cringe every time Santorum opens his silly face to speak. I want them beaten into submission by Santorum’s idiocy. I want them to see how ugly of a human being they tried to replace Obama with.

By the end of the campaign Santorum and the GOP will be so beaten down that it will feel mean to make fun of them. This matchup, if it happens, will signify the end of the modern GOP. All talk of conservative politics afterward will be about a “restart”, or a “renewal”.

I simply cannot wait.

America is wide open and trusting. This shouldn’t change.

The idea of stopping terrorist attacks from occurring is simply asinine in this light, as it’s just too easy to walk into a mall and cause havoc.

The message to terrorists (also heard by the American people) should not be,

We’ll stop people from setting off bombs in malls.

…but rather,

It’s easy to set off a bomb in a mall. So what. If you do you’ll kill fewer people than died that day from car accidents — in a single large state. We’re not afraid. We’re American. We won’t panic and we’ll simply hunt you down and kill you.

Put things in perspective. Don’t overreact. Obesity and alcoholism make Bin Laden look silly by comparison.

Sure, we still stay vigilant. We still look for suspicious activity. We still report things that might be dangerous. And we build that defensive eye into our education system. But we don’t open our legs to fear by considering an attack to be proof that our security has failed.

Us being attacked isn’t a failure. A mall bomb or seven, or an airplane or two going down on the same day: we should consider these extremely annoying and grounds for an asswhoopin’ — not evidence of the weakness of our country.

We should plan on this happening. Expect it. And not flinch when it does.

This is how we increase our security — by collectively controlling our response to attack and putting an end to pretending it won’t ever happen.

::

It’s that simple.

I don’t understand how the GOP allows this to continue. Gingrich winning is a catastrophe for them. Romney has a chance to win against Obama as an “anyone but him” candidate. Gingrich doesn’t even have that, as his past is full of campaign-breaking secrets, and he’s likely to say something colossally stupid at any moment.

Then again, many of those secrets have already come out.

The fact that he’s a known adulterer who’s had multiple marriages, yet still received 42% of the vote from evangelicals in South Carolina, tells you that they’re voting with their fear, prejudice, bias, and subconscious — not with their declared values.

Anyway, Romney is their only option and it’s quite entertaining to watch them squirm as a guaranteed losing proposition against Obama gets more popular. The difference in understanding between experts and the masses is more obvious than ever.

In a political debate you feel like the other side just doesn’t get your point of view, and if they could only see things with your clarity, they would understand and fall naturally in line with what you believe. They must not understand, because if they did they wouldn’t think the things they think. By contrast, you believe you totally get their point of view and you reject it. You see it in all its detail and understand it for what it is – stupid. You don’t need to hear them elaborate. So, each side believes they understand the other side better than the other side understands both their opponents and themselves.

The research suggests you and rest of humanity will continue to churn into groups, banding and disbanding, and the beautiful collective species-wide macromonoculture imagined by the most Utopian of dreams might just be impossible unless alien warships lay siege to our cities. In Sherif’s study, he was able to somewhat reintegrate the boys of the Robber’s Cave experiment by telling them the water supply had been sabotaged by vandals. The two groups were able to come together and repair it as one. Later he staged a problem with one of the camp trucks and was able to get the boys to work together to pull it with a rope until it started. They never fully joined into one group, but the hostilities eased enough for both groups to ride the same bus together back home. It seems peace is possible when we face shared problems, but for now we need to be in our tribes. It just feels right.

So, you pick a team, and like the boys at Robber’s Cave, you spend a lot of time a lot of time talking about how dumb and uncouth the other side is. You too can become preoccupied with defining the essence of your enemies. You too need the other side to be inferior, so you define them as such. You start to believe your persona is actually your identity, and the identity of your enemy is actually their persona. You see yourself in a game of self-deluded poker and assume you are impossible to read while everyone else has obvious tells.

The truth is, you are succumbing to the illusion of asymmetric insight, and as part of a flatter, more-connected, always-on world, you will be tasked with seeing through this illusion more and more often as you are presented with more opportunities than ever to confront and define those who you feel are not in your tribe. Your ancestors rarely made any contact with people of opposing views with anything other than the end of a weapon, so your natural instinct is to assume anyone not in your group is wrong just because they are not in your group. Remember, you are not so smart, and what seems like an insight is often an illusion.

via youarenotsosmart.com

Posted via email from danielmiessler.com | posterous
