NIXI - National Information Exchange India

The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) is the neutral meeting point of the ISPs in India. Its main purpose is to facilitate exchange of domestic Internet traffic between the peering ISP members. This enables more efficient use of international bandwidth, saving foreign exchange. It also improves the Quality of Services for the customers of member ISPs, by avoiding multiple international hops and thus reducing latency.

To speed the spread of the Internet in India, the cost of Internet connectivity and bandwidth must be reduced and the quality of service improved. One of the most effective mechanisms to accomplish both cost and service gains is the Internet Exchange Point (IXP). An IXP interconnects Internet service providers (ISPs) in a region or country, allowing them to exchange domestic Internet traffic locally without having to send those messages across multiple international hops to reach their destination.

NIXI is owned and managed by STPI. STPI has set-up Internet Exchange points in India.
NIXI enables all Indian ISPs peering with each other like VSNL, BSNL, RELIANCE, BHARTI etc.
This would enable exchange of domestic Internet Traffic within NIXI.
STPI has made available the infrastructure at four locations at NOIDA, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
Upcoming locations are Lucknow, Jaipur, Bangalore etc.

ICANN GTLD Plan Questioned By US Lawmakers

The board at ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the nonprofit organization created in 1998 to oversee the Internet's domain name system, voted in June 2008 to move toward unlimited gTLDs, in addition to the 21 gTLDs available now, including .com, .biz, and .info. Under the ICANN plan, anyone could apply for a new gTLD -- some suggested have been .food, .basketball and .eco -- at a cost of about US$100,000.

Members of a subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee on Wednesday questioned ICANN Chief Operating Officer Doug Brent about why the organization continues to move forward with its plan to sell new generic top-level domains, or gTLDs. Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, complained that ICANN hasn't been able to resolve complaints about its plan to sell new gTLDs to compete with .com, .org and other current TLDs.

Asked by lawmakers how soon ICANN planned to offer new gTLDs, Brent said he wasn't sure. ICANN had originally planned to offer them this year, but the latest estimate is February, and Brent said he expects that deadline to slip as ICANN works with critics to resolve issues.
Critics of the TLD expansion, including Hewlett-Packard and Dell, have complained that a huge expansion of gTLDs would force trademark owners to buy multiple domains on each new gTLD, potentially costing them and their customers billions of dollars. This week, the Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse (CADNA), an organization with 19 large-business members, called on the U.S. government to conduct a "full-scale" audit of ICANN.

ICANN's Brent defended the organization's decision to move forward with new gTLDs. Internet users, including the U.S. government, have long called for new TLDs, he said. In addition, the expansion of TLDs would allow Internet users who don't use the Roman alphabet to have domain names in their native languages, he noted.

While the results or the next move is not yet known, it would be interesting to see how ICANN - operating much like a corporate instead of NGO resolves this issue!

You wish to start a website now or you are an established player on the Web - one major concern all of us face is the dilemma before buying a domain name on the quality of the domain name. We can buy domain over internet much easily as compared to few years earlier when each domain name would cost above $35, now thankfully the prices have come down to much less value and with multiple domain extensions to chosse from, buying a domain of your choice is easy.

What factors should one consider before buying a domain name?

Here is a list of ideas based upon my research on the internet while researching for my own domain purchase. Some of these ideas may seem ridiculously obvious or already known to you, but glancing through these won't hurt you and perhaps serve as a reminder in case you may have overlooked the obvious:

Research Keywords: When you go out to buy domain name, you must consider the source of traffic, Google and Yahoo have created a brand so - most of the folks don't search Google on Google search engine - they type the URL directly, if you already have an established brand known to the masses, such as Microsoft or Oracle - you don't need to read further, this article is for those who are stepping on to the internet and looking to buy domain for internet business. However if you wish Google and Yahoo and Bing to send traffic to your website or your registered domain name, look out for the keywords that reflect your business or personal requirement. Search engine would always give preference to a domain name registered with keywords, thus if I register BuyDomainName focussing on "Buy Domain Name" chances are that search engine would give me a better ranking since the name contains the keywords being searched for! There are a number of keyword generating tools in the market and you may also use Google Adwords to generate a list of keywords. Once keywords are generated, you may opt to visit Domain Name Suggestion Tool which would give you list of available domain names based on the keywords you submit.

Top-level domain: Choose the proper top-level domain if you still can find any available domain name. Everyone wants to own a .com, .net, .org, .info, and so on, and that is the biggest problem of domain name on internet since most of the good names are already taken. Top-level domains like .info and .biz are not very popular - one reason being low pricing has made them easy for spammers to purchase and abuse the domains. However if you can not buy domain name with TLD's - all is not lost! Search engines have changed over the years and when you search from a particular location such as Brazil, Google would place domain names with ccTLD's higher up in the ranking in an effort to give better results to person executing the search! So a .br domain may rank up high, and similarly if you are in United States - a good domain name with .us extension will certainly be good for your website, instead of rather long or difficult to type ThisIsNotWhatIWantDomainName.com! Short is sweet, and you can buy domain name with a ccTLD if you wish to focus on a particular region or territory. The perceived notion of .com gaining priority over ccTLD is slowly disintegrating with .br, co.uk sites showing up above .com or .net in local search results.

Domain Name for Sale: Consider buying a domain name as an investment at par with real estate, only difference being the virtual and electronic entity versus the ground reality of real estate! And at times if you are willing to pay the right price, you may still get a good 4 or 5 letter domain available in domain name marketplace. Services like Sedo and Bido have made the task to sale and purchase domain names easier. If something right for you is available for sale - and if you know how you can amortize the price over a period, have the right idea to execute and recover your small investment and turn the domain name into a money spinning website. Don't wait for price of domain to go up or the domain to be bought out by someone else with similar idea. Keep aside a target price - your budget and if things are right, chances are, the seller who has been investing in the domain name for years may just be willing to transfer the domain name to you at the price you offer! Word of caution though - do search through the web to check if domain has ever been listed for spam or any other activity. Even though Google and other search engines allow webmaster to reconsider - you may like to review the damage done with regards to spam / other activities that may prevent your site to perform better with the audience.

Domain Name is Relevant: Ensure that domain name you buy is relevant to your business. Don't buy domain name just because it sounds good or you perceive it is good. Be logical, do your research before buying a domain name. You can of course buy domain name if it has a direct focused keyword relevance to you, your business or the activity for which you wish to run a website.

Domain Name Length: We have already covered this earlier with IDontWantThisDomainName.com example, but just to reiterate, don't end up buying a domain name rich with keywords even if it is very relevant to your site. We all make mistakes while typing and you don't want potential users or customers to see an Error: Page Cannot Be Displayed just because they typed an l instead of i. Short domain name are easy to remember and easy to type. Long names - no matter how good they may be, increase chances of error - and thus avoidable.

Thus to summarize, Buying a Domain Name Is Easy and to buy domain name simply consider the points with regards to keywords or focus area, top level domain that you intend to target when buying a domain. When buying domain name, also do remember that you may purchase registered names from existing users in domain marketplace or buy domain from Sedo, Bido and multiple other services offering domain sale purchase services. Before you buy a domain name, check for keyword relevancy. While buying domain names, it is important to look at the age and history of the domain name - so do search in Google and Yahoo diligently to ensure that buying web domain doesn't come up with surprises for you with regards to black listed IP or domain names. Keep the name short while buying domain.

You may come across an irresistible offer to buy a domain name on a forum like Digital Point or on ebay and you just want to go ahead and buy it, however before you buy, you wish to confirm the credentials of seller, details of domain and location of web servers. Or, you really like things about a website such as speed, performance and other things, and intend to host your site at the same place. Another scenario could be that you would like to contact domain admin for some reason but the site doesn’t provide you the link to contact. How would you find out all this information from the net? The answer is rather simple — just do a WHOIS and you would get a whole lot of information, that is otherwise not available to you.

What is WHOIS
WHOIS (pronounced “who is”) is a TCP-based query/response protocol which is used for querying an official database in order to determine the owner of a domain name, an IP address, or an autonomous system number on the Internet.

There are command line utilities to do whois, along with modern net based tools that give you information about a domain name and web site. These tools and utilities query WHOIS servers and provide standard information. Web-based WHOIS clients rely on the WHOIS protocol to connect to a WHOIS server and do lookups, and command-line WHOIS clients, where ever available are used by system administrators.

The WHOIS system originated as a method that system administrators could use to look up information to contact other IP address or domain name administrators.

How To WHOIS
As mentioned above, there are command line utilities mostly available on *nix platform in as open source software. One can create there own WHOIS clients using Java, C or other languages to run on their specific platforms. Web based WHOIS is most popular where you just have to feed domain name and you are presented the information, mostly text on your web browser almost instantly.

Key Information Extracted from WHOIS
Most of WHOIS servers provide following information :

Domain Name – This is the domain you wish to investigate.
Registrar – The company the domain is registered with – like http://www.pubdomains.com
Creation Date – Tells you the date the domain name was created on.
Expiration Date – This is when the domain name expires.
Updated Date - Tells you when information on the whois record was updated. This could pertain to addresses, nameservers, or simply if the domain was renewed for another year.

Administrative Contact – This is who is in charge of the domain.

Nameserver – First nameserver (also called the primary nameserver)
Nameserver – Second nameserver. (also called the secondary nameserver)
Nameserver - This domain has a third nameserver as well: you can have as many as needed, although the norm is two. Depending on which whois service you use, you may also see the IP addresses associated with the nameservers.
The nameservers generally will tell you where a domain is hosted. You can do a whois search on the nameservers to get more info on the host itself.

Watchout! Br.com Is Not A Brazil ccTLD

Today while reading namepros forum, came across this post where one of the user bought 4 .br.com domains assuming they were Brazil ccTLD domains, however it turns out to be a nice little expensive purchase since official Brazil ccTLD is .br while 3rd level is .com.br!

Apparently CentralNic has purchased a number of 2 letter country code domains and now selling 'SUBDOMAINS' to unsuspecting users.

They claim that this is an alternative to saturated TLD's - as per their website "CentralNic's domains provide an alternative to the existing Top Level Domains (TLDs) and Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs), allowing the creation of a simultaneously local and global Internet Identity."

It's been a while since Ringo was shut down as we reported way back in June 2008 in this post

The domain though is still registered and I wonder what do they intend to do with the domain next? It is registered until 2010 - so a while before the decision is made with respect to the domain name.

Funny part is despite over an year that the site has been down, Alexa ratings show this site to be frequented by visitors... OOOppssss some big flaw in the software with Alexa there, there are no more pages, than how come users give average page views of 1.5 :) Think about it!!!

Weitzman is a quiet guy who has never been interested in the spotlight, but as the victim of a major domain hijacking he is speaking up now with the hope that the publicity will lead to the return of his domains and prevent problems for others who might unknowingly buy the stolen names and lose their investment. Weitzman is also trying to find out how the theft happened and he believes the break-in could have occurred as high as the registry level at Verisign.

Weitzman first learned something was wrong on Thursday when Rick Waters, who is developing Adios.com for Weitzman's company, called to tell him that suddenly Adios.com had stopped resolving at the assigned DNS. "I immediately went into my account at Enom and saw that Adios.com was there, still locked, with the same normal email for me, and everything appeared to be fine," Weitzman said. "But when I did a WhoIs lookup at DomainTools it showed a ‘John Thalacker’ as the registrant, 000domains as the registrar, and fastpark.net as the dns and lander, plus a phone number that didn’t work."

"I immediately called Enom, emailed them transfer-disputes and inquired how the domain could be in my account while showing another owner in the public record simultaneously. I alerted everyone I knew, but no one could understand how this could happen,' Weitzman said.

"After contacting Enom, we learned that all of the domains were still locked but Adios.com was no longer in Enom's database. It had been transferred out. How could this happen without a notifying email, EPP, without a hack at the Verisign level or some kind of cooperation from Enom? We also found that other domains had been transferred out to the same DNS (fastpark.net) and those names now showed various registrant information (mostly privacy WhoIs)," Weitzman said.

Meanwhile, some of the names that have already been taken from Weitzman's account continue to move (a common situation with stolen domains). "We noticed that Sou.com, the first of the hijacked domains, was transferred again, this time to NamesDirect as registrar and again, fastpark.net as the lander and another private Whois," Weitzman said. "I hope that by publicizing this, we can find out if anyone else has had this experience and what the resolution might be. It is also our hope that no one will purchase any of these names," Weitzman added.

I admit, I always thought .tv for television (ignorance ... sighs...) but today while doing a search for something else, I came across the origin for .tv ccTLD extension. OK, so while you have time here are some interesting facts on .tv domains..tv is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the island nation of Tuvalu. Except for reserved names like .com.tv, .net.tv, .org.tv and others, any person in the world can register a .tv domain for a fee. The domain name is popular (and thus economically valuable) because it is an abbreviation of the word 'television' (other similar ccTLDs are .me, .fm, .am, .cd, .dj and .mu). Such unconventional usage of TLDs in domain names are known as domain hacks.
Tuvalu was formerly known as the Ellice Islands. A Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. It comprises four reef islands and five true atolls. Its population of 11,992 makes it the third-least-populated independent country in the world, with only Vatican City and Nauru having fewer inhabitants. It is also one of the smallest member by population of the United Nations. The South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) suggests that while Tuvalu is vulnerable to climate change there are additional environmental problems such as population growth and poor coastal management that are affecting sustainable development on the island. SOPAC ranks the country as extremely vulnerable using the Environmental Vulnerability Index. While some commentators have called for the relocation of the population of Tuvalu to Australia, New Zealand, or Kioa (Fiji), the former Prime Minister Maatia Toafa said his government did not regard rising sea levels as such a threat that the entire population would need to be evacuated. In spite of persistent Internet rumours that New Zealand has agreed to accept an annual quota of 75 evacuees, the annual residence quota of 75 Tuvaluans under the Pacific Access Category (and 50 places for people from Kiribati) replaced the previous Work Schemes from the two countries and are not related to environmental concerns.
At its highest, Tuvalu is only 4.5 m above sea level, and could be one of the first nations to experience the effects of sea level rise caused by climate change. Not only could parts of the island be flooded, the rising saltwater table could destroy deep rooted food crops such as coconut and taro.

ICANN - Uniform Rapid Suspension - Comments Closed

ICANN - URS IS NOT NEEDED

Monday 6th July was the last date to submit your comments to proposed URS (Uniform Rapid Suspension) policy introduced by ICANN.

While a lot has been talked about the role of ICANN itself, read more on the public hearing about lack of transparency and accountability, ICANN is yet to give the final report after comment period ended on July 6th 2009.

If you are wondering what URS (Uniform Rapid Suspension) is - ICANN, the organization that sets the guidelines for arbitration panels to follow in reaching their decisions, governs the issuance of domain names ending in .com and .net, for example, and has recently proposed a new plan called the Uniform Rapid Suspension System Policy (URS) that could give trademark holders the ability to file a simple form complaint for only $200. By filing the URS complaint it automatically freezes the domain name in dispute before the domainer ever has a chance to respond to the complaint and before a decision is ever rendered.

Although the URS on its face only applies to the new gTLD’s, comments made by representatives of ICANN clearly indicate that they will in fact apply to all existing extensions (.com. .net. &.org) meaning all the domains you own sooner than later.

While this is such an important decision regarding domains that you may own, and affects every domain owner on the planet, ICANN decided to play it down and instead of sending email to every admin contact for registered domains, it has rather demonstrated the lack of transparency by just publishing the information on its website only. Did you receive any email informing you that IRT may decide the fate of your domains - and you should participate. Of course with ICANN the term democracy doesn't apply, and it is playing in the hands of business parties with vested interest. Clearly evident from the fact that no member of IRT was from domain investment background and thus couldn't have a balanced view about the whole process.

I hope some good sense prevails over ICANN and they think 'Logically' and with right approach before passing the judgement. This may as well be the turning point that would force domain owners to unite and stand up against not so tranparent ICANN.
