I’m really excited about these custom blog designs for so many reasons.  I was able to do work with one of my great blogging friends, Crissa I met her over on Blogaholic Social Network she was a huge huge help to me for a really long time when I was first starting the community out – she runs an awesome blog- BellaBud! I don’t have time to read many blogs even though I wish I did but I always try to stop by and see what she’s up to she reminds me a lot of myself busy as can be and trying to juggle all the wonders of life her posts are fun, light-hearted, honest- love her!!!!! I was so excited to finally be able to create a custom blog design for her because we had been talking about it forever, it gave me a chance to create a more modern custom blog design which is a style I love creating! Chris of Moums Musings she is just starting her blog and wanted a clean and simple yet modern cute custom blog design and it was so much fun working with her – we became friends instantly! Her custom blog design turned out just perfect I love the colors she chose and it just all feel together! I also designed The Orange Apron Cakery blog which is too cute – love how her custom blog design turned out, it’s fun and original and just super cute – I love the cake and cupcake elements she choose for her custom blog design and it worked out to be both professional and adorable !

So as many of you know Google is/has been making some changes, some of those changes include Google products going away or the talk of them going away. Just last week Google announced that they will be shutting down Google Reader on July 1st, 2013 as well as some other Google Products. Last year (2012) they shut down the API for Google Feedburner followed by the Feedburner blog and Twitter account, as for what will happen with Google Feedburner – no one knows (but it’s probably best to make alternative arrangements)! These are just 2 HUGE products that Google is pretty much walking away from. Many people rely on these products and naturally many people are upset. I’m sure Google has good reasoning (well maybe their reasoning is questionable they did just put out that ridiculous new cover for Google+ YIKES) but these changes will take some time , adjusting, and rearranging on our parts.

Now as for the Blogger follower widget and where it has gone! I had a client contact me and ask why no one could follow her. Assuming she was referring to Google Friend Connect I asked her to try a few things to get her followers widget to work. Come to find out she thought I was talking about her Google+ Followers Gadget – because it was the ONLY followers widget listed for her to add on the layout page! Sure enough I went into a test blog on Blogger and under the main add gadget panel there was NO Blogger Followers Widget to add!!!!! Instead, you can add Google+ Followers Gadget.

After some searching around in the Blogger gadget panels, I did find that the Blogger Followers Widget can still be added! Sneaky Google tried to hide it! Seems that they are trying to weed it out, and what a better way to do it then to make it appear as it has been removed and also not even appear as an option for new bloggers. So, the fade away plan (in my eyes): a new Blogger goes into the main add gadgets panel and sees Google+ followers as shown above and with no other apparent options they add that, not giving much thought to the Blogger Followers Widget unless they already know about it. So what’s gonna happen over time is new bloggers will start using Google+ followers and slowly the Blogger Followers Widget/ Google Friend Connect will fade away into the sunset. This is of course is just my prediction but I do know how much Google is pushing Google+, so why have Google Followers Gadget competing. Now, the only problem is if Google thinks it will go away quietly they have another thing coming! For some bloggers that Blogger follower widget is a badge of honor and  understandably so! Bloggers have spent years building up their blog followers and it’s no easy task. We are talking giveaways, and blog hops, and leaving comments, and networking much of which was done for the sole purpose of growing their blog and gaining followers now to take that away would be to take away all those years of hard work!

Who knows what the future will bring for the Blogger Followers Widget but for now here is how you can add the former Google Friend Connect Gadget to your blog (Blogger blogs only):

Now, if you are a new blogger my suggestion would be not to add it ONLY because if Google does delete the Blogger Followers Widget in the future it is best to find alternate ways for readers to follow your blog from the start so that you don’t lose your connection to readers if Google does decide to ditch the Google Friend Connect Gadget!

As many of you may remember a few years back we wrote this post on finding a new hosting provider. At the time we primarily used Photobucket but we were just starting out with blog freebies and we noticed some of the other blogs that offered blog freebies were exceeding bandwidth on Photobucket and being forced to pay for a pro account so they up and left. We wanted to avoid that problem so we went elsewhere to host our blog freebies as well.

We did however, leave up our images for backgrounds and some buttons that we had in Photobucket account so that bloggers who had already been using our blog freebies would not have an interruption of service. For the 1st year we even went with their upgraded Photobucket pro account just in case. But after that year we didn’t renew because we were no where near our bandwidth limit.

Apparently, after all these years the blogs that do run off of those Photobucket hosted background images have built up quite an audience because we got a notice yesterday letting us know we were near our bandwidth limit.

I won’t bore you with bandwidth details but pretty much if a blogger uses a free blog background, for example, that background image pulls from a hosting source (Photobucket in this case) the more a blog/website is viewed the more it pulls from the host  and the more bandwidth is taken up. So pretty much if a website is viewed 1000 times a day that image is pulled 1000 times a day and that takes up bandwidth. We figured all these years later most bloggers would be working off of our new background code since we put it up so long ago but that didn’t quite happen.

This all would have been no big deal, we could of upgraded and no ones images would of been replaced with the Photobucket bandwidth image but the only problem is Photobucket told us YESTERDAY that we were getting close. This was the image in our email:

So we figured we had at least a day or 2 to get images deleted and see if we needed to upgrade but apparently the sites that use these backgrounds went viral overnight and used up all that remaining bandwidth in less than 24hr because this is what we got this morning!

WOOOOW!!!! That was sure a lot of bandwidth to fill up in less than 24 hours, hmmmm!

So fine, upgrade to Pro and images will be restored right? WRONG! It has now been almost 8 hours and NONE of our images have been restored! How long does it normally take to restore Photobucket images after upgrading to a pro account due to bandwidth exceeded? Well, after researching, we found it can take up to 6. Once again, we are now over 8 and no images.

So we put in a support ticket, or 2- I mean come on we have all of you lovely bloggers waiting for your images to be restored so pull it together Photobucket!!!!!

Then I come across this in a Photobucket news update today:

We are currently experiencing technical issues with one of our servers.

This is resulting in “Bandwidth Exceeded” message for a portion of our Plus users, or those going Plus. Instead of the unlimited bandwidth that Plus users are supposed to have, Plus users are finding that they continue to see the “Bandwidth Exceeded” image served in place of their actual linked out image.

To those affected, we sincerely apologize. We appreciate your patience and don’t want you to feel…bamboozled. We are working on this issue right now. 

We’ll update this article as soon as this issue has been resolved. To those who wrote in to our help desk, we will respond to your tickets as soon as your accounts are functioning properly.

Again, we know how frustrating this can be and apologize for the inconvenience.

I get it, servers go down, it happens. But this on top of the VERY short notice, on top of some other issues we have recently had with the new Photobucket interface. Beginning to lose my faith in this site that I once thought was oh so wonderful!!! I really do love how easy it is to grab the links for images, and we do have clients use Photobucket to store their custom images and they have never had problems. We know for our needs we can’t use Photobucket and we haven’t in over 2 years for storage of our blog freebies just because we have reached a point where we know we need a great deal of bandwidth. But just in case you are in the market for storing a great amount of items, items that will be hotlinked, or storing blog backgrounds – let this be a warning ! Look elsewhere to avoid a great deal of trouble or go pro from the start!!!

Anyways, thats our two cents on Photobucket! Sorry again for any interruption!

When you first set up your Facebook page you will give it a name and that name will be attached to the Facebook url before the string of numbers. So for example when I first set up my Facebook page it looked similar to this:

Ultimately, I wanted it to look like this:

https://www.facebook.com/BlogaholicDesigns

In order to remove the numbers after my url on my Facebook page, I simply had to follow a few small steps and my Facebook url was then just my page name without the numbers.

If you would like to remove the numbers from your Facebook business page follow the steps below:

1) You must have at least 25 likes in order to change your Facebook url to just your page name and to remove the string of numbers!

2) Once you have at least 25 likes log in to your Facebook account under your profile NOT your page

3) Go to: https://www.facebook.com/username

4) Select the Page you would like to the edit the url for and then choose a username (the name you would like at the end of your url) See below.

5) Click “Check Availability”

If your name is available you are all set! You can now enjoy your new Facebook url without the extra annoying numbers at the end!

A few things to note:

• Your readers will be re-directed to the new url so if you have links set up with the old Facebook page url that had the numbers at the end those links will still work they will just redirect to the new Facebook page url!
• Your name may not be available, if it is not available just keep trying until you get a name you like that is available!
• You can only change your name one time once it is set so be VERY careful when choosing a name!
• Check your spelling before you submit- again you can only change your Facebook username one time!
• Again, you must have at least 25 likes to remove the numbers off or your Facebook url to make it more custom!
