• Firstly, download portable Firefox from portableapps’ website. Run the file and follow instructions on screen. Check if you can run the portable Firefox before proceeding to the next step.
• Download Flash Player .xpi version from Macromedia => Link
• Change the file extension from .xpi to .zip by renaming it as flashplayer-win.zip
• Since you now have it as a .zip archive, extract the files in the archive to a folder.
• Copy the files flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32.dll to the plugin folder inside your Portable Firefox folder:

FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins

Run the now flash-embedded Portable Firefox. You can view flash file anywhere you want on Windows-based PC without having to install anything as long as you have the portable Firefox with you.

The method of embedding flash player above can also be applied to the standard version of Firefox.

Celcom Broadband is a mobile broadband internet connection service provided by Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad which aim at providing the Malaysians with high speed internet connectivity anytime and anywhere. To date, they claim to be Malaysia’s No.1 mobile broadband provider as they have the widest coverage (over 71% Malaysia populated area).

What technology does it use?

It uses 3G and 3.5G (or HSDPA) technology. Basically the 3G speed they are offering is up to 384Kbps downlink while 3.5G speed is up to 3.6Mbps downlink. If your area is embraced with the 3G/HSDPA coverage, you will get the speed they promoted according to the package you’ve chose. Otherwise, you will only get GPRS speed which is slightly faster than 56Kbps dial-up connection.

The package variation is good for its adaptability to meet the need of people with different financial background or situation.

What devices do we need to get connected to the internet?

1) 3G sim card: After registering at Celcom Tower or any Celcom Broadband reseller you will be provided with Celcom 3G sim card for free.

2) 3G broadband modem: This vary with promotion. Either you buy one (such as Huawei 3G USB Modem) for promoted price, bundled or buy separately according to your own preference.

3) Computer (PC, Laptop, or Mac) with USB port: Note: The modem will come up with software installation. You will use the software to get connected to the internet later on. In case you are new with this just follow the instruction provided Celcom’s technical staff/reseller. It’s pretty straight-forward.

My Experience:

My father and I registered ours at one Celcom Broadband reseller nearing the end of last year. The package we chose is D68. We were provided with Celcom postpaid 3G sim card, and Huawei USB modem. The activation took less than a day and the next day we were able to connect to the internet.

The advantages: Good surfing speed, mobile connectivity, extremely easy to setup, small modem

The disadvantages: Uploading problem at certain time (now the issue has been resolved), shared IP (it’s almost impossible for us to download from shared file hosting such as Rapidshare, USAUpload, etc), capped P2P and bittorent, timeout and disconnection problem when the signal is not good, not suitable for downloading.

So, based from above it is advised that Streamyx users who plan to migrate to Celcom Broadband should think more than twice as they will not get the benefits they’ve enjoyed with their Streamyx subscription such as dedicated ip address, fast upload/download speed, etc.

For file downloading purpose, Streamyx is still better or for those who don’t want both, they can try P1 WiMax.

Conclusion: Overall, Celcom Broadband is good if you are a student/worker who want to get connected to the internet with mobility, flexibility, affordability and ease of use or if your area has no Streamyx or WiMax coverage.

If you’re thinking of using it with a downloading machine then it’s not recommended as there’s bandwidth volume allocation for each package (5GB for D68 and D98, 25GB for Pay-Per-Use, and 1GB for daily unlimited).

1) Improve the signal

Assuming that your modem and laptop is located inside a building, the transmission of the 3G/HSDPA signals will be affected. You will need to get a long 15m/3m usb cable so that you can put your USB 3G modem near the roof in order to improve the signal that the device receives from telco’s transmitter. I bought one during Pikom PC Fair and the 3m USB cable costed me an affordable RM15 (USD 4.2) with a life-time warranty.

Important! Keep your modem in a cool place and prevent it from getting hit by raindrops. High temperature and moisture might damage your modem.

2) Optimize your modem setting

This is the setting that is often left unoptimized. Here’s a quick fix to it.

1. Right click on My Computer then click on Manage.
2. Go to Device Manager -> Modem ->
3. Right click on your 3G USB Modem and choose Properties
4. Go to Modem tab, adjust maximum Port Speed to the max. Save the new setting by clicking OK.

3) Upgrade your modem firmware

This can be done by referring to the instructions by the modem manufacture. Go to your respective modem manufacture website to find out how to do it.

One of the benefit is you might be able to uplift the download speed limit for your modem, for example 7.2Mbps instead of the conventional 3.6Mbps (Huawei E220). Upgrading the firmware also often improve the overall performance of your device.
