There are lots of free alternative to commercial software these days. Microsoft Security Essentials by Microsoft is a good software to try if you want to prevent your computer from being invaded by security threats such as virus and still have not installed any antivirus program yet.

This free antivirus protection only needs you to have licensed Windows OS running on your computer for you to be able to install it. It supports Windows XP and later releases including Windows Vista and Windows 7. Regarding reliability, there’s not much to say as I’ve been only using it for a few weeks on Windows 7 platform without any other Antivirus program running but so far I’ve maintained my computer virus-free.

Microsoft Security Essentials can get automatic updates, performs real time detection, and other basic antivirus function. It has a comprehensive malware database and a simple graphical user interface. It runs very quitely in the background and does not compromise with computer performance since it’s light in resources.

Microsoft did get certifications by WestCoastLabs and other security company. Hence, I guess it’s no harm in giving this program a try, especially if you want to forget having to spend any money for antivirus subscription like me.

Just enough is more. Get Microsoft Security Essentials

How do I extract WinRar archives without using WinRar in Windows OS?

Many files in the internet are compressed using WinRar. Some of them are splitted into different parts using the program. As a user, you might wonder how you can extract those WinRar archives without having to install WinRar since the program itself isn’t free. It’s a shareware which you can use until forever but to avoid getting annoying message after the trial is over, you might consider a switch.

Fortunately there are two free alternatives that are worth to be used in order to deal with Rar files. The first one is 7zip. 7zip is an open source Windows utility for manipulating archives and it works with 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, and TAR. For the other formats like WinRar, this utility is able to unpack them. To learn more about 7zip, here’s the website.

The second one is IZArc. Like 7zip, it supports many format and has the ability to unpack WinRar files. Just make sure that you don’t install additional unneeded software that comes with the installation file. Visit Izarg.org to learn more about this utility.

These two software are similar but if you want a very friendly user interface IZArc seems to have the advantages.

These are some of the things you can do to save your iPod/iPhone if they got accidentally soaked in water. Like we all know, it’s unfortunate that Apple doesn’t cover damage due to water in their warranty.

So, these steps are worth to try before spending any money for a new ipod. Mine was a washing machine disaster, but I think any water-related accident may be applied here.

How to save iPhone/iPod that has submerged in water

First, completely turn off your iPod or iPhone. This can be done by pressing the power button for a few seconds and slide according to the instruction on the screen.

Remove any screen protector. Wipe the iPod/iPhone with dry cloth

Put the device in a small container of uncooked rice and leave it to dry by the sunlight. The rice will absorb surrounding moistures. Silica gels can be used as an alternative if you don’t want the rice dust, but be sure to get them quickly. If the weather is not sunny at your place, or if it’s too hot, you can put the container inside your house.

Your device should be dried within 1 or 2 days depending on the weather condition. Let it cool down if it feels hot.

Connect the iPod/iPhone to your computer through the USB port leave it for a few minutes. It should work normally after that.

If the device fails to charge or synchronize, reset it by pressing both power and home (round button at the bottom) at the same time for a few seconds.

If the device fail to turn on, send it to any iPod/iPhone repair shop.

I hope this little effort will help you like how it prevented me from getting a new iPod.

To other readers who plan to buy an iPod/iPhone, it might be a right decision to buy warranty that has coverage for water damage alongside the gadget so you don’t have to worry about this type of accident.

Q: How can I play Flash File like YouTube videos on the internet when I don’t want to/can’t install Flash Player or anything?

A: This problem can be solved by using portable Firefox (since you don’t want or can’t install anything in the first place). The basic idea is we are going to embed Macromedia Flash Player into the Firefox using an unconventional method.

Firstly, download portable Firefox from portableapps’ website. Run the file and follow instructions on screen. Check if you can run the portable Firefox before proceeding to the next step.

Download Flash Player .xpi version from Macromedia => Link

Change the file extension from .xpi to .zip by renaming it as flashplayer-win.zip

Since you now have it as a .zip archive, extract the files in the archive to a folder.

Copy the files flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32.dll to the plugin folder inside your Portable Firefox folder:

FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins

Run the now flash-embedded Portable Firefox. You can view flash file anywhere you want on Windows-based PC without having to install anything as long as you have the portable Firefox with you.

The method of embedding flash player above can also be applied to the standard version of Firefox.

Newbies who are interested to learn internet marketing now have the opportunity to do so by subscribing to a free 12-week course by Shoemoney.

One can also join it for the purpose of adding more internet marketing knowledge to what one has now and apply them coherently with the course.

I had received my first week lesson of ShoeMoney Xtreme course last week. Though the first lesson (2.83mb pdf file) is only a preface it has covered many things that we should expect and should not expect from internet marketing. It cuts out the nonsense about making money online easily which can be found in other marketing books and videos. Readers also get to know the requirements (psychologically) and if he/she is actually fit enough to dive into the internet marketing world.

I like the end part of each lesson where we are given assignments to finish in order to be prepared for the next week’s course since knowledge without effort to apply is useless. Shoemoney has teamed up with MySpace, Facebook, and Microsoft to give you free money to spend on their advertising platforms so that your newly-created business/website will get traffic.

If you plan to open a document in your USB pendrive using a computer that might be breeding ground for USB viruses and malware, it would be wise to enable write-protect on the pendrive to prevent it from being infected by those threats. Enable write protect means you disable any change to be made to the files and sectors of the pendrive. There are several methods to do that but I found out using a portable write protector software is the easiest.

Portable USB WriteProtector by Werner Rumpeltesz will get the work done. It is compatible with all Microsoft Windows Operating systems up to Vista. Extract the .rar file (187kb) to the location where you want to access this software. Launch it from there.

Plug in your USB pendrive then turn on USB write protection. To disable it choose the latter.

Having a USB pendrive is good for productivity because it can carry large files despites its small size. With capacity more than 8gb and fast write/copy speed, this invention has become one of the most needed computer devices for students, workers, teachers, and others to manage their digital files nowadays.

However, with the heavy usage of USB pendrive a major problem arises. Virus creators turn their attention towards this tiny device to exploit unsecured computers. Many viruses infect the pendrives and of course inclusive of the PC where it is plugged in which has Microsoft Windows operating system installed. It is made possible due to the compromised autorun.inf script file which automatically execute in company with viruses files whenever the device containing the file is plugged into Windows-based computer. Windows operating system does not disable autorun by default.

To counter this problem, there are several methods that one can use. First is to enable write protect on USB flash drive which is useful if you plan not to do any change to your USB flash drive. There’s also viruses and malware removal tool by sUBs which comes in handy. But today I’m going to cover about free standalone antivirus solution which consists of both prevention and cure approaches.

Mx One Antivirus 4.0 is a free antivirus for your USB pendrive, iPod, mp4 and mp3 players, memoirs M2, SD, micro SD, and many more USB-based storage devices. It protects your USB drives against virus, trojans, worms, spyware, hacking tools, and software risks. It also quarantines suspicious and infected files for deletion purpose.

The installation file is 1.4 mb. You need roughly 1mb of free space reserved on your PC or removable media for this software. You can install either into your PC or your USB flash drive or both better protection.

With this free antivirus for pendrive the question that comes in one’s mind would probably if this antivirus gets to work well with antivirus that is already installed in our pc? Fortunately, it is compatible with any antivirus resident like Nod 32, Kapersky, BitDefender, AVG, Norton, Panda, Avast, Avira Antivir.

The key aspect of Mx One Antivirus 4.0 is it provides realtime protection. Check and Destroy system detects and removes all viruses that attemp to infect our USB device while connected to infected PC even for unknown viruses. On the other hand, Guardian system protects our PC from viruses that come from infected USB devices. Always update the signature file periodically to prevent new virus threat.

For every online transaction you want to make with Maybank2u, you will need Transaction Authorisation Code (TAC). TAC will be sent to your registered mobile phone number in the ATM via SMS without any charge. It is valid 2 hours upon request and if you request it via Maybank2u it will be invalid once you logout.

Basically, if you have problem to retrieve the TAC, you won’t be able to do your online transaction.

Tip 1:

Do online transaction at non-peak hours such as after office hours to avoid Maybank2u’s server traffic congestion. TAC request delay (which might get you into headache) usually occur during busy period such as from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Also, try not to do your transactions during the end of the month where lots of people use this online banking service to pay their bills and loans. This is busy period too.

————————————————————————–

What if you encounter Maybank TAC request problem such as delay?

Tip 2:

Request the TAC once. Wait for the TAC while keeping you from getting logout from Maybank2u website automatically. If you don’t want to wait:

Call Maybank if you face the problem during their banking office hours (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.). They will help you.

Leave your house and get TAC via ATM. Note that TAC valid only for 2 hours upon request so you need to do your online transactions within the period of time.

Else, refer to Maybank2u website here on how to retrieve the TAC using Kawanku Phone Banking. Interestingly, you can retrieve it via voice response if you are subscribed to this specific service.
