A major solar storm, marked at the Sun by an M8.7 soft X-ray flare and the eruption of a fast coronal mass ejection (CME), began early on January 23, 2012, igniting the most intense solar energetic particle storm since 2005. The expanding CME drove a shock through the solar wind, analogous to a bow wave in front of a fast moving vessel. In the shock, electrons and protons were accelerated to nearly the speed of light and appear in the video clip as streaks of light as they hit SOHO’s detectors. When the shock reached Earth, CME particles spiraled down the magnetic field lines near Earth’s poles and caused spectacular aurora displays in the higher latitudes. Some observers claimed it was the best display they’d seen in many years. You can watch a clip of aurora from Sweden here: vimeo.com/35618405

A ‘Blue Marble’ image of the Earth taken from the VIIRS instrument aboard NASA’s most recently launched Earth-observing satellite - Suomi NPP. This composite image uses a number of swaths of the Earth’s surface taken on January 4, 2012. The NPP satellite was renamed ‘Suomi NPP’ on January 24, 2012 to honor the late Verner E. Suomi of the University of Wisconsin.

Suomi NPP is NASA’s next Earth-observing research satellite. It is the first of a new generation of satellites that will observe many facets of our changing Earth.

Suomi NPP is carrying five instruments on board. The biggest and most important instrument is The Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite or VIIRS.

La carne cocida proporciona más energía que la carne cruda, según ha demostrado un equipo de investigadores de la Universidad de Harvard (EE UU). Este hallazgo sugiere que los seres humanos están biológicamente adaptados para aprovechar los beneficios de los alimentos cocinados, y que la cocina que jugó un papel clave en la evolución de la especie.

La investigación, dirigida por Rachel Carmod y publicada en Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, también plantea importantes cuestiones sobre la alimentación de los humanos modernos. “Los resultados de este trabajo son relevantes para el estudio de la evolución humana, y también a la hora de plantearnos qué pensamos sobre la comida hoy en día”, afirma Carmody. Según la investigadora es sorprendente que no conozcamos las propiedades fundamentales de los ingredientes de la dieta humana. “Prestamos atención a la manera de cocinar los alimentos y en su presentación, pero sin embargo no entendemos el efecto que esto tiene en la energía que extraemos de los alimentos, y la energía es la razón principal por la que comemos”, subraya.

Aunque estudios anteriores ya habían examinado aspectos específicos de lo que sucede durante el proceso de cocción, hasta ahora, según Carmody, no se había examinado a fondo cómo la cocina afecta el valor energético. Para examinar estos efectos, durante más de cuarenta días, alimentaron a dos grupos de ratones con una serie de dietas que consistían en carne o patatas dulces preparadas de cuatro formas: crudo y entero, crudo y triturado, cocido y entero, y cocido y triturado. En el transcurso de cada dieta, los investigadores registraron los cambios en la masa corporal de cada ratón, así como la cantidad de tiempo que usaban la rueda de ejercicio.Aunque los primeros humanos ya comían carne hace 2,5 millones de años, sin la capacidad de controlar el fuego toda la carne de su dieta era carne cruda y, probablemente, machacada con herramientas primitivas de piedra. Aproximadamente hace 1,9 millones de años, sin embargo, se produjo un cambio repentino: los cuerpos de los primeros seres humanos aumentaron en tamaño, y sus cerebros en tamaño y complejidad. A pesar de que teorías anteriores sugirieren que los cambios fueron producto de un aumento en el consumo de carne, esta nueva investigación apunta a otra posible hipótesis: la capacidad de cocinar los alimentos proporcionó a los seres humanos más energía, permitiendo que se produjeran cambios evolutivos energéticamente costosos.
