I didn't add the links in the labels in the results, because it would be cluttered, and I don't want to distract the users from the results that you get.

The second one, you don't have to give inline styles. I have modified the JS to specify different classes for the "Label:" and the actual list of categories.
You just need to change the CSS rules for .search-cat-label

I installed yesterday your hack and I found it very very useful.
I also made a modification to it by let you choose another category/tag by clicking directly on links in the search result window, by changing

catdisplay.innerHTML+=xentry.category[j].term;

with

catdisplay.innerHTML+="AOPEN href=\"javascript:getCat('" + xentry.category[j].term + "',null)\">" + xentry.category[j].term + "ACLOSE";

to show that links to categories.

Also, I thought was good to change color and font style to "tags:"/"labels:" written before and font weight to categories themselves:

metalink.innerHTML+= "SPANOPEN style=\"color:#CCCCCC; font-style:italic;\">" + feedLabel + "SPANCLOSE " + "SPANOPEN style=\"font-weight:bold;\">" + gCat + "SPANCLOSE";

You have to add the CSS rules just beneath the other rules for my hack. Look for .search-cat and add a new line beneath that like this:
.search-cat-label{color:#AAAAAA;};

Modify the color to your requirement.

I believe that Math.round is the culprit, not a timezone or anything like that.

day is calculated by subtracting the first of the month from today. By playing around with these functions at http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/tryit.asp?filename=tryjsref_date I realized that the number it's calculating is rounded up at noon because it is .5 or greater after noon. (I'm sure there's a better way of explaining it)

I'm going to change Math.round to Math.floor and test it - I believe that should fix the problem.

Sorry to keep bugging you on this, but I've noticed that the quote changes at noon, instead of midnight. So if you check my blog in the afternoon you'll see a different quote than you would in the morning.

Is it possible to make it so it changes at midnight? I don't know if this is b/c of timezones or some conversion somewhere, or what...

We can use fall back mechanisms like you said, but I meant to say that the effect will be ruined nonetheless.
From a programmer POV, a fall back mechanism *should* be there. I do that for the plugins installed in my WP.

I guess it's a little too late to be replying, this post IS very old.

When you said the script.aculo.us library doesn't work if the prototype library isn't working, I saw a little black spot.

The script.aculo.us library only knows prototype isn't loaded if you CALL an effect which USES a prototype function. If we check for a basic prototype function before calling an effect, we can tell the person they acted too soon, and then return false. So:
