Gardiner and Penhallow

Factory Australasia's founder ANDREW PENHALLOW explains the origins of the label as GAP:

"One day I was talking with Paul Gardiner, the editor of Rolling Stone, and we came up with the idea of releasing this music locally. Paul knew the CEO of EMI Australia really well and he was sure he could get us a deal. So we had a think about what we could release. One of the writers for Rolling Stone, Bruce Elder, was living in the UK and we’d catch-up whenever he was in Sydney. We ran the idea past him and he brought on-board another Australian in the UK, Arnold Frollows, who had just finished working for Virgin. He joined the dots for us and soon we were in contact with Geoff Travis at Rough Trade and Daniel Miller at Mute. We came close to a deal Korova but lost them to Warners. Rough Trade came on-board and we also did something with Mute.

"Arnold got in touch with Tony Wilson to licence Factory. Tony said speak to Rob Gretton because he handled that side of things. Rob was very laid-back and said ‘Maybe’. I don’t know what convinced them but we did the deal. We didn’t know what we were doing – we just liked the music. In the end we did the deal and paid them an advance. But it was really weird – Paul got $10,000, I got $10,000 from my then mother-in-law. Then Paul got another $10,000 from his wife’s ex-husband who was a brain surgeon. We pulled together $30,000 and set up GAP (Gardiner and Penhallow)."

	[Light brown/gold] An edition of FACT 130 THE WAKE Here Comes Everybody was scheduled for release but was not issued.
	[Light green] An Of Factory New York mail-order leaflet lists a boxed cassette release for FACT 24 A Factory Quartet. The colour indicated is as per a Factory/Ikon advertisement from 1986. The cassette was not issued commercially but prototypes exist.

Notes: There is an original large promo poster for ‘Unknown Pleasures’ done for the tour with the Buzzcocks. (This can be seen on the [15 Sep 1979] "Something Else" TV appearance.) There also seems to be an (official) A1 sized poster.

Filling out

Over the last couple of days we have been busy updating the many Artist pages so as to include as a bare minimum the relevant Factory Catalogue entries. However, in many cases there are line-up details and pithy profiles.

This side of the site will develop as time progresses so please bear with us where details for your fave FAC act are scant at the moment.

T-SHIRT or VIDEO?

Many thanks to Brian for filling in several missing (previously unknown / not allocated) entries in the IKON/FCL catalogue. Not content with that though, he has given clarity on the format of certain artefacts (mostly confirming that they are T-Shirts rather than Videos). Finally, he has provided details on the little known spin-off labels Dubious and MAN which produced documentaries.

Individual item entries are not yet available for IKON/FCL but we will get there eventually.

Those UK FAC numbers in full

Work is now complete on the Factory Catalogues for the four UK iterations of the label: Factory Communications Ltd (Factory Records), Factory Too, Factory Once and F4 Records. Please bear with us or let us know if you find any glitches.

Our attention now shifts to Factory Benelux and further afield.

January update

23 January saw the go-live for this the Factory Records Catalogue some three years and counting since its creation at the end of 2008. A number of other pressures including Scream City, an as-yet-unfinished redesign of Cerysmatic Factory and even some real work have got in the way of starting it for real.

The Factory Communications Ltd (UK) catalogue is largely completed, save for some interlinking and tidying up. Work will now shift to Factory Too and the remainder thence the remainder of the subsidiary labels.

There are no images as of yet but these will follow.
