We got to meet some new people from the community and hang out with friends till it got dark. There were lots of laughter, lots of carpenter bees (who, I am pretty sure, did not appreciate Zach spraying so close to their holes in the wall!), and lots of music. Thank you to everyone who stopped by. We appreciate your support!

Haley Checkley, from the Purdue Exponent, also stopped by to interview Zach. Which means we have to clear out our raised bed to get it ready for pepper plants. Yesterday I harvested baby greens and transplanted whatever I could save. The salad greens and the kale were just starting to grow real lush and it traumatized me to have to pick them already. But the peppers have to go in the ground this week ...

And besides, we did get a really great salad out of the baby greens so it wasn't a total loss.

The Chinese vegetables were definitely feeling the heat. Most of them started growing really tall and flowering. I tried to pick whatever I could for a simple mixed greens stir-fry, and I managed to save a little tray of the Hong Kong baby cabbage.

8 pepper plants have taken the place of the greens in the raised bed. We bought 5 of them, and 3 are our very own seedlings! Our garden is growing at an amazing rate. here in lafayette. i've been cleaning up the studio all week, and it is still a disaster. it'll get there though. it's the first gallery walk of the summer, and i'm hosting an open studio and painting performance at my studio at foam city.

i've been at foam for a little over a year now, and i've made a ton of stuff, and now it's time to clear some space so i can make a ton more stuff. i'm also hoping to convert my studio into a clay space so i can get back to doing ceramics. but to do that i've got to clear some space. so i'm putting everything in the studio on 'get it for way cheap' sale. now is the time to pick up that over-priced piece of art for MUCH less, and in the process you can help me purge some stuff from my work space.

i'm also going to be painting a new mural on my garage door. last year around this time i did the TV/robot mural, but it's time for a change. i'll be using the 'stained glass' stencils and other patterns to create a new piece. i'm going to start it this afternoon, then tomorrow i'll be painting through gallery walk. should be fun to watch. you can see my process in progress, filled with drips, drops, splashes, splotches, stencils and spray cans.

it should be a fun night. there will be old prints and recent prints on paper. there are assemblage paintings. there are large pieces and small pieces. there is some ceramics. there will be stencils on cardboard created while you wait for $10. and you can check out some of my in-progress pieces, like the new recycled village i've been working on.

come join the experience.

the tale of one strawberry

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It is the first one, so it's gotten all my attention. I've documented it since the very beginning, from when the flower first bloomed. I caught a picture of the bee who helped pollinate it, and I captured the little berry in all its different growth stages. Today, little strawberry joyfully reached the end of its growing journey. When we woke up this morning, we saw it fully red and glistening in the daylight. And Zach wasted no time in eating it. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. Yummmmmmm. So glad we beat the birds!

Recipe of the Week: No Cook Tomato Sauce

It is currently a springy 81°F and Zach has decided that it is too warm to turn on the stove in the house. We ate a grilled chicken salad last night, and tonight we are grilling some Jamaican Jerk chicken wings on the patio. If you feel the same way as Zach about turning on the stove for extended periods on a hot day, today's recipe is just for you! prints on a color block dress. then she asked for a couple of new smaller robots that she could pattern with. i carved up a couple of small blocks and she got busy making new patterns with them. i went and spent some time with a friend, and when i got home she had created this super cute robot/gear tshirt for herself, and i was jealous. thankfully i know the producer of said garment, so now we have matchy-matchy robot shirts. a bit lame. ok, real lame, but we promise not to wear them at the same time. and how could i resist.

We've been posting a little lesser than usual because the weather has been so nice and I've been juggling my time between working hard in the garden and/or working in the studio with Zach. Zach's been spending lots of time cutting some really awesome large-scale stencils. I'm sure he'll write a post about them soon enough. But we do apologize for being somewhat absent. We think of the blog often and plan our meals around "Recipe of the Week." Here's our latest share ...

Fresh Herb Mushroom Soup

The best part about this recipe is all the fresh ingredients! We used thyme and tarragon from our own garden. And mushrooms, well, you'll be happy to know mushrooms made the "clean 15" list this year. We were going to plant them, but then I thought I should read up on how much space and what kind of care they would need in the garden first. Since we are growing watermelons vertically on trellises, we can only grow small (less than 10lb) fruits. The Malali, an Israeli variety, grows in the hot desert and yields 10-22lb fruits. Oops! So we took it on a road trip yesterday. We gave the seedling to Zach's mom who has a large field. She will be growing Malali watermelons this year. As for us, we bought ourselves some new seeds. We'll be growing some little baby flower watermelons instead!

Jazz Action Heroes: In the Press

Zach and the students from the After School Arts Program did such a wonderful job on Jazz Action Heroes. Harissa is a spicy mix of hot peppers, garlic, coriander, and caraway. We made a paste by adding it to some greek yogurt. Here's a quick look at what's been growing ...

Strawberry blossoms! We have 7 strawberry plants (one from last year and 6 other new ones) and they all look like they are doing well. It's so fun to see the flowers bloom, fall, and the little strawberries emerging. 7 plants seem like a lot but Zach is still convinced he's not going to have enough to eat!

Swiss chard -- a new addition to the garden this year. I got the "bright lights" variety because I thought this would be a fun and delicious way to add some color in the garden. The seeds took no time at all to germinate, which is always a bonus! I've never actually eaten chard before, so this should give us plenty of opportunities to explore and experiment with new recipes ...

Pea shoots (dwarf gray sugar). I've already harvested a round of these! These little happy campers love the rain and gloom. They are so easy to grow, and you can harvest them in a week! Cut them above the first set of leaves and they'll come back even stronger! We've been eating these in salads, but another easy way to prepare pea shoots, is to saute with freshly minced garlic and a sprinkle of salt. You can add some sesame oil if you like, but resist the urge to douse the dish with oyster sauce!

We have 4 blueberry bushes and 3 of them have these clusters on them. We've been waiting a year for blueberries so I'm hoping we'll get some this year!

Dill. We grew a little pot of them so we have plenty to put into yogurt sauces and egg salads. Yum.

Last year we struggled to get the Japanese shiso growing. This time around, we've ditched the Japanese variety for the Vietnamese kind and they seem to be growing well. I'm still not sure what we'll do with the shiso but I guess there's plenty of time left to figure this out.

Cilantro and parsley. We grew them in long planter boxes because these were the herbs that we didn't seem to be able to get enough of! The cilantro seeds germinated fairly easily. The parsley is about a week or 2 behind. We're planning to sow these successively so we can hopefully have a nice and steady supply of both this year.

Our raised planted filled with greens ...

Kale. I thought the kale would love the slightly chilly spring weather but these have really taken a while to grow. Maybe we need to fertilize them more, or maybe I'm just too impatient!

Speaking of being impatient, these are the dwarf baby bok choy that I thought would grow in just a couple of weeks. It's been a month now and they are still just little, tiny plants. Grow bok choy! Grow fast so the bugs and worms don't eat you bare like they did last year!

This is our dwarf mandarin peach tree. The flowers are a striking fuchsia color that the camera simply cannot capture. I'm excited to see this tree come back to life. We left it out all winter and have been keeping our fingers crossed ...

Blue sky salvia, with little flowers starting to show!

Borage. We decided to grow borage because I read somewhere that borage deters a good number of pests in the garden. Borage is apparently also good for attracting bees. I'm not usually a fan of anything that crawls or flies, but I'm learning that bees are our friends.

Our raspberry shortcake bush! We are so excited that this plant came back to life! We didn't have high hopes for it. The lady at Bennett's didn't have high hopes for it either. But this little plant surprised us all and I am so happy for it! I doubt we'll have any fruits this year, but that's okay. We'll just focus on it growing big and strong. Anything beyond the 2 existing twigs will be a treat.

An improved meyer lemon tree. We bought this earlier in the month, and have been carrying it in and out the house so it can get some sun but not freeze overnight. It's a lot of work, but we're not complaining ... yet. The little blossoms smell heavenly and the flowers look so pretty it's hard to stay mad at a plant as awesome as this!

This dark leaf clover plant is my favorite in the garden. And that's quite the surprising choice considering how we can't eat it! I just love the dancing leaves and the cheerful demeanor of the plant. The leaves open in the sun and close back up at dusk.
