The battle between the two has been going on since my very first photography class in college.  The fight back then was much more even in the eye of the general public.  More people still owned the classic 35mm cameras.  The occasional digital shooter would show off the fact that their 1 inch screen on the back would confirm they nailed the shot.  At that point, film even had the edge when it came to the detail in an image.  That quickly faded.  The technology in digital sensors became better and better with the passing years until it was no longer a valid talking point.  Then auto focusing got so good (sans Canon, of course ) that it seemed like film would be the next new exhibit in the 20th Century Museum.  But it wasn’t over.  Anyone who has really worked with film (darkroom style) knows the biggest advantage of all… The Feel!  That’s right, there’s something special, not about touching it but about seeing it.  As proof of it’s existence, there are products (apps or post production actions) used to altar digital images to create the look of film.  Try as they might they’ll never replace that silky goodness.  What made digital so popular, is ironically, what makes film so attractive to others.  Digital is easy; it’s fast.  You can see the image on the back of the camera, realize you messed up, take another, upload it to your computer, color correct it, crop it, touch up that booger in the kid’s nose and have it to a client within minutes.  That’s amazing, and it goes along so well with our current culture.  But what film lovers love is that film is none of that.  You take a shot and better have gotten it right.  You move on, finish your roll of film, send it off (because local places scratch your negative, see image #7), wait until it comes back, look over the images, send out the images you want printed, wait until they come back, sit and admire the “feel” and then hand them to a client.

Like I said before, I don’t have a favorite.  Jen and I would probably not be full-time photographers if it weren’t for digital.  But I don’t know if we would have ever fell in love if it weren’t for film… in love with photography of course.

And lastly, Jennifer said that I had to add this one.  It may look bad, but all I’m doing in the photo is showing Brendan how you test out hotel beds… that’s how I was taught.

If you know me well, you know I have a passion for food.  I’ve cooked since I was young, even attending cooking camp for a week during summer break…awesome move, Mom!  I am an adventurous eater, always one to try a new food or a dish done differently.  I appreciate the art of cooking, the creativity it allows one, and of course, the most pleasant experience of sharing food around a table of friends, family or even strangers (communal tables now trending).  While my palate is well-traveled and varied, I certainly have a soft spot for real, unadulterated  food, slow food, locally grown and home-cooked goodness.  Some of my fondest memories involve a meal so exquisite that I yearn to taste it again.  I recall so many special meals shared with special people.  And, of course, there were the meals set against the perfect backdrop…if it was not the food to be noted, all of the senses converged for one great moment.

I’ve had the opportunity to photograph some beautiful food and prepared dishes over the past year.  Working with the Produce Mom to the ever-fantastic Chef Concetta has been an enjoyable experience.  I’ve been able to meld my passion for food with my passion for photography.  Here I share some highlights from our many days in the kitchen!
