Though I like most of them, there are really few that are appealing enough for me to actually use it on blog. This week on Blogger Buzz Viglink CEO, Oliver Roup talks about one more way of making money from your blog and in a simpler way through viglink.
A year ago when I started this blog, the first thing I did was find a suitable domain for my blog. I wanted to make this site for blogger users and so Bloggeruser.com was really appealing to me. I quickly bought the domain name with only few clicks, Thanks to Godaddy and configured to work with the blogger hosting. In fact for other sites I went for the default option of buying domain through the blogger itself. (Which I don’t really recommend to you).

So, yes I am suggesting you too to get a domain name for your blog. Well it’s not that there’s anything wrong with the .blogspot.com (of course for blogger users). There are several popular sites still with the same extension but believe me, it will be the best investment you will ever make in your blogging path. Here’s why you need to follow my suggestion.

1.	Stand out from the crowd

The competition in blogging has grown so fierce that you need to have something if you need to stand out from the crowd. Blogger being a free service and easy to install, many have started using it for some unfair practices. I mean the spam is growing so rapidly that most of the blogs under that domain are just created for manipulating search engine. So, your domain will make you stand out from the crowd and add some credibility.

2.	Your blog owner is Google, NOT you

Yeah, you don’t own that domain. Google owns. Of course you use it, you just have right to use it. Did you go through the Blogger’s ToS? They clearly mention that only the content you write is owned by you, and the platform is the sole property of Google. How this affects is, the blog is not in your hands completely and someday if you happen not to abide by their terms of service, they have right to remove your blog without any notice or reason. Won’t this affect all your hard work till now? Think isn’t having your own domain worth?

3.	You have wide range of options

If your blog grows and becomes popular, you start looking for more options and beyond the box. That’s when you might go for your own hosting rather than depending on the free Blogger hosting which has limited options in comparison. You domain will finally come in use. You may want to move to some other CMS such as WordPress, (which most of them do) and then the same domain on which you worked for years will come in use and will have same authority with added flexibility.

There are lot advantages of owning your own domain name but I wanted to write this post just to inspire you to go for your first domain if you haven’t got any. Good luck.

The older version of preview used to show just the miniature preview with the formatting options applied and now the newer version actually allows you to preview the post directly in your blog along with the template you have applied. (Yes, similar to the wordpress feature.) I know most of you play with your WYSIWYG editor and want to preview it lot of time before you click on the “Publish Post” button.
This feature will actually help you to see how your ongoing post is going to look with your blogger template (along all your styles if used) and thus blog. Did you see that Preview icon band on the side of your blog? See the screenshot below to see how this post looked in preview with blogger.

Ok one more thing before you go and start using this feature. You need to refresh the page or click on the”preview Button again if you changed the content. Basically it means, the page wont refresh automatically. Blogger In draft did let us know about the new feature with its new blog post. Do you try the blogger feature before they are released ? Are you going to try this one ?

With few lines of additional codes in your templates, you can change its look with smart fonts. Yes, I am talking about Google’s Font API that will make the process of including non standard fonts in our blogger templates a lot easier. In this tutorial, I want to include details on how you can easily implement different fonts available from Google’s Font directory in your template to make it look beautiful and thus better.

First, Google’s Font API

Google’s Font API is simply a web font service that allows you to use the available fonts in its Google Font directory for your designs and most importantly it is Open Source and served by Google servers.

Google Font Directory

The fonts available in the Google Font directory are all open source and you can quickly use them with simple clicks and codes. The below screenshot shows some fonts (till the time of writing this post) you can use for your templates or projects.

Steps for Adding to your Blogger Template

Well, if you learnt enough about the Google’s Font API and now want to implement in your blogger template, let’s get started.
1.	Go to the Google’s Font Directory and click on the font you want to use. For example in this tutorial, I have chosen the Droid Serif.

2.	Now navigate to “Get the Code” button which is highlighted on your right.

The Code for the Droid Sans will be

<link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Droid+Sans' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'>

3.	Now see the below screenshot and copy the code you need to use for your Blogger Template.

4.	After you have copied this code, go to your Blogger Template you want to add this font to; and Navigate to the Edit Html Tab. See image below. (we are now going to edit your Blogger Template)

5.	Search for the tag
<head>
in your Template and add the above copied code directly after it.

6.	Wait as blogger uses strict HTML markup and considers the original font embed code to be an open tag you also need to add forward slash (/) just before the closing “>” symbol in your code, so that the code can be properly parsed and thus the code for Droid Serif becomes

<link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Droid+Sans' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'/>

7.	Save your Template.

8.	One more Step before you can start using it. The above steps added the CSS file to support the font. And now we need to define where we need to apply the font in our theme. In order to define where we need to apply that, we need to add some additional style statements to the section of our template.

Don’t be confused! For example if I need to Use the Droid Serif font to my h3 title in my blog, then I would add the following line just beneath the closing tag
</b:skin>
:

h3.post-title {font-family: Cantarell, Sans=Serif;}

9.	Now after you have decided where to apply the font, just change the font-family name to the required font.
The Following references and text areas to look for also can help you decide where you need to apply the font.

Description

Reference

The header section (title and description)

#header

Blog title

h1

Post titles

.post-title

Body of blog posts

.post-body

Sidebar headings

#sidebar h2

Sidebar text

#sidebar .widget-content

Footer section

.footer

10.	And once you have added that required CSS, you can preview to see it in action in your template. Try using different fonts and see which font suits your template better.
11.	You can finally save changes to your template if you like it.

Still Found it Confusing ?

Check the Below video from Net Tuts that helps you learn the simple concept behind it and you can go through the steps again for the Blogger.

How can this benefit the Blogger Template Designers?
This can be the easiest Web font solution if you are a designer. It’s as easy as Copy and Paste; you don’t need to go through the process of sign ups and getting licence to use this with your designs.

I am really sorry for making this blog unavailable throughout the week. But give me some time to explain what went wrong with this blog. I took the whole blog down mainly due to the security concerns. Yes, due to some problems with the host of this blog i.e. GoDadddy, some security flaws were discovered and I didn’t want to disappoint my readers and visitors by redirecting them to some spam site. So basically, everything I did was to protect my blog and readers.

I didn’t expect Godaddy could be this bad host. I always recommend Godaddy for buying domains but I won’t recommend it for Hosting purposes. Some months ago when I moved from Blogger to WordPress, I choose Godaddy as a host for my blog especially for ease. It’s not that I didn’t experience any other problems before this. I frequently experienced the “Error establishing Database connection” error. But it kept going on anyway because I used to receive a limited traffic.
Now this security flaw was really weird. Most Self hosted wordpress sites including this that were hosted with GOdaddy (and with some other hosting companied too); were hacked, in fact injected with some malicious code. This blog after being infected was being redirected to some other sites. So i took the site down and tweeted:

#GOdaddy is just good for domains, not for hosting purposes. For Some security issues, I have let my site down. Will restore it soon.
And also started looking if some other had problems. And I discovered a lot of tweets regarding the issue.

Soon GoDaddy started responding to the issue and found tweets such as;

RT @danielscocco: RT @WPSecurityLock: Go Daddy Investigates WordPress Attacks and
Reaches Out to Customers http://bit.ly/bw3QGD #WordPress #GoDaddy

GoDaddy has also replied to comments, created support articles and made a special “Security Issue” form on their website. They’ve actively emailed and/or called their customers that may have been affected. (If you’re site has been compromised and you have not heard from Go Daddy yet, please be sure to contact their Security Team.) Via WP Security Lock
GoDaddy has been providing us with statements to keep our readers informed.

WordPress Exploit Update 5/13/2010
“Early into our investigation, Go Daddy noticed a majority of exploited websites were all running WordPress. After feedback from customers, more attacks and more in-depth analysis, we modified our statement to specify the attacks targeted numerous PHP-based applications, which included WordPress.
Transparency is a core value at Go Daddy. We intend to continue our commitment to communications. There are times, however, when publicly revealing too much, such as specific code from the attack, helps the criminals causing the issue.
We are aggressively collecting data to see how the attack is maturing and to discover ways we can help prevent our customers from being impacted and shut down ‘the bad guys’ altogether. Go Daddy is leading an ongoing effort, working with industry security experts and other top hosting providers.
As part of our investigation, Go Daddy is encouraging customer input about their related website issues, which is why we set up a special form: http://www.GoDaddy.com/securityissue.
Look for further updates from Go Daddy on this topic, at http://Community.GoDaddy.com/support.
Go Daddy Chief Information Security Officer

Besides all these, the WordPress exploit became more frustrating to me. As my database was infected, in hurry what I did was deleted the database and moreover so frustrated that I cancelled the particular hosting account with the Godaddy.
And then I contacted the Godaddy if they could help with anything. But they just sent me a mail with the expenses I need to cover in order to do so. See the mail below.

So instead of paying their charges, I decided I would do everything from the scratch myself. Well, it took some time but the good news is, we are Back and like never before.

I hope you like sharing blog posts. Using Blogger Navbar is an easy and default way of blogger for sharing posts. Do you remember blogger announced last time that users can share blogger posts from their Navbar? And we also mentioned you how you could get your Navbar back into your blog if you have already removed that or are using some custom templates. If you are still interested in getting the Navbar back, I suggest you go through the post “share Posts through Blogger Navbar”. The post will not only help you to restore you Navbar but also learn more about this sharing feature on blogger. This time, blogger has added one more option to the same sharing feature. It has added the “Google Buzz” to share your blogger posts to their buzz streams.
Well, to use this feature, you just need to click on the “Share” link of your Navbar and choose Google Buzz from the option. You can also customize your message before posting to the buzz stream. See the Image below and give it a try.

So if you aren’t clear about Google Buzz; in blogger’s own words for Google Buzz;

Google Buzz is a new way to share updates, photos, videos and more, and start conversations about the things you find interesting. Better yet, all comments to your Buzz post get sent right to your Gmail inbox so it’s easy to keep the conversation going. Just go to the Google Buzz homepage and give it a try! We know you write interesting stuff, so sharing to Buzz is a great way to spread the word about your blog.

Yeah Google Buzz can help you promote your blog. If you have a good social network and god friends this can be a better option to promote and grow your blog. As Google Buzz is directly embedded in the Gmail, you can also introduce it to some friends and of course they will follow you and your blog to make most of it.
So, let us know if you using Google Buzz to share your posts and this cool feature directly from blogger ?

And when Blogger has really made it easier to add Adsense Ads and monetize your blog’s content, I hope there’s nothing wrong to give it a try. Ok it’s up to you to decide whether you need to monetize your blog or not but I guess, most of you must be doing that. And do you know you need to keep on playing with the ads position to find out the spot for more earnings? But sometimes you face the problem to have your ads displayed in the right position you wanted to. May be you need to edit your blogger template in order to do that. So in this post, I wanted to include tips that will help you to display your Adsense ads in better position and thus increase you earnings.

If you are including your ads via gadget, you can simply follow the ways of adding a new gadget and select adsense ads to include ad in your blog.
But if you want to display somewhere in places where you cannot add gadget, then you may need to edit your template. This post will show you how to exactly do that. (Note: you may need to some basic Html skills, at least in order to identify the codes where you need to add the advertisement code)
1. Log in to your dashboard–> Navigate to layout –>Edit Html Tab

2.	Before you edit your blogger Template, Make sure you backup every time, by clicking on the Download Full Template so that you may restore it if something goes wrong.

3.	You may need to “expand Widget Templates”. To do that check the box and it will expand itself.

4.	You should have got the Adsense code or other html that you want to add. And now you need to change the code. Otherwise you are gonna get error like
Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.

5. Ok so what you need to do is, Parse the Google Adsense Html or any other Html. To do that change the following characters to the given ones.

< – <
> – >
& = &
”= "

Found it complex and time consuming. Try this tool Escape Html from blogcrowds. Copy and Paste your Google Adsense or other code to the textbox in the tool and click on parse.
6.	Now when you have got the parsed code, Paste that code to the specific place you need to display it. Now it should work perfectly.

If you want to display adsense ads inside your blogger post please go through this post Adding Adsense Ads in Blogger Posts.
