Now this blogger has systems in place on their blogs. They have affiliates, ads, and articles that provide great content. They are blogging to send more traffic to their sites so that folks will buy and or promote their stuff. Even if they are on a cruise they probably set their blog to auto posting for the holiday. Not only do they make money in the sleep but while they are deep in conversation at a party.

The Therapeutic Blogger

This blogger gets rid of stress by blogging. They may share the drama of the week and how it was resolved. Or they may rant about an injustice. In addition, they can vent their vibes about a current event.

Blogger Type #3

The Social Event Blogger

Before the day is over this blogger will share pictures and people connections about the happenings on this day. It could be a trip to the mall for sales or a great movie and dinner details.

Blogger Type #4

The Back To School Blogger

This blogger is sharing the excitement, extra duties, or encouragement for an upcoming school year. May include teachers who are setting up new blogs for the school year aimed at peers or students.

Blogger Type #5

The Caregiver Blogger

This blogger may share tips for other caregivers about resources or recent events related to caregiving. Since care giving seldom gets a holiday these bloggers rarely refrain from blogging when they can.

Regardless of the blog type many folks enjoy reading blogs on a Labor Day  as much as they enjoy watching the TV marathons.

I teach folks in my blogging class to take a good amount of time deciding on the area they are going to blog about.  It is much like setting a goal. You try to be as specific as possible and refer to it often to see if you are on target.

This morning I read an article about niche marketing that had a very interesting perspective. These marketing gurus felt that you should go broad then narrow when deciding on a niche. For example, if you are thinking about blogging on gardening then you would search on the word gardening with different variations. They could include “rose gardening” “winter gardening” etc.

The key point the article made was to look at the word “gardening” and start with that then go deeper. My summary “go wide then deep and decide.”

I strongly suggest using the free Google keyword tool.  When you want to do more extensive searches you can pay for a tool. But right now just go to Google and in the search box key in the words “Google keyword tool”.

The other thing it shows are the keywords “tags” you can use when you produce a blog post.If you are on a Wordpress platform, there is a section on the dashboard that always allows you to key in tags. That is the same thing as keywords. The more relevant they are  to your post the better.

The cool thing about us baby boomers is that we have a broad area of interests based on our broad area of expertise and experience. That can make for some great blogging. What do you think?

Also, while you are there sign up with the site. You can start with a very social media friendly site like CNN. As a of fact I just went over to their site and saw a fellow baby boomer blogger Inez Bracy.

She was under the section called “Friends Activity”. This is a section on CNN where using Facebook, you can  see what your friends are recommending and sharing on CNN. Inez was sharing an article post on CNN about the shorthand language used by teens when referring to drug and alcohol use.

So you can go and connect using your Facebook and allow CNN’s software  to grab your information. Now this entitles you to post a link to the video, blog, or make a comment on a blog post and get the link back to your site. There is also a section where you can grab the permalink on a particular blog post and reference it on your blog. That’s where YOUR blog is fed blog food from CNN.

Check out the pictures below showing the blog section of CNN and the place where you get the  permalink.

After you click on one of the blog posts you will see the permalink option. (Note: A permalink is a shortlink with the name and or date  of the post in the link. You use this link to post in your blog when referring to the post on the news site.)

After you click on the permalink the resulting url is below:

http://ricksanchez.blogs.cnn.com/2010/05/10/wanna-see-what-goes-on-behind-the-scenes-at-ricks-list/

Take that link and you could, for example write:

“Look at what goes on behind the scenes at Rick’s list” Highlight that entire statement and insert the link into the box.

So, get started now by looking for joining CNN and also search in the search engines for the news site for your state or local newspaper. Here are a few news sites to get you started.

Go ahead just type in your State or major city into the search engine, i.e,  “Detroit news” and search around for a registration or sign up button. If the site is not social media savvy move on to the next one. Be sure to participate in the social bookmarking and social networking opportunities.

Trust me when I say that you will find an article related to your niche topic. Some sites will also have lots of blog posts. Try to find out how you can post your blog articles and link to the site. In addition you may have to go down to the bottom and look hard for it but there may be an option to post your videos!!!!!

Here is the first of a series of post on blogging workouts. Today I want to share the value of adding controversial blog post. It is a post that can generate a lot of comments because the topic is something that most of your readers will have an opinion about.

To give you an example check out a post I read today about a pregnant woman who goes into a bar for a drink.  She is refused a drink by the bar attendant. Wow, the comments following the post are intense.

Clearly a baby boomer has something to say about this one. Try it, add some agree or disagree to your next blog post.

Ray and I decided to take an eight week webinar training in the evenings. These were great date nights. We would eat dinner then sit at the dinner table around the lap top or downstairs around the desk top with speakers turned high as we listened to Jeannette Cates talk about starting a business online.

Now we were already primed by other internet gurus we like and admire. But this series by Cates promised to help us set up our own website! I admit I thought it was going to be a static site and I would learn more about Dreamweaver. But before we knew it we had jumped into deep water and was swimming with Wordpress.org. Oh my, that was the program that looked so hard on the VTC training that I decided it was far easier to stick with Blogger.

But it was too late. We were assigned to create this Wordpress.org site and host it. We did it. We are glad we did.

Later as, as time went on, we went deeper with Wordpress.org with the guidence of my friend Cathy Perkins, the infamous Wordpress Wizard.

Ray and I were not born bloggers. But as baby boomers we were determined to learn. We now have many blogs and still learning.
