Do you suddenly get up in the middle of the night hearing strange noises? Yes it can definitely be frightening, more so when you cannot find the source. Now consider for a moment that these sounds are coming from within you. Most people would be stunned to know that. Many of us do not even know that our internal organs can make sounds.

Let us try to see whether you actually heard these noises or not, and if you did, where did they come from. Now before anything, let us get this straight – yes, you actually heard those noises. No, they are not a result of a creative mind that imagined things in slumber. But having said that, it is also true that there is indeed no source of the sounds you heard. So what is it? Confused?

What is tinnitus?

What you experienced last night (or did you just get up from sleep and switch on the computer) is a classic case of tinnitus. This is a medical condition wherein a person hears all kinds of strange clicking, ringing, buzzing, whistling or hissing sounds within the ear. What’s so worrisome about this condition for a lot of people is that, there’s actually no physical source of these sounds. What makes it even worse is that, no one else seems to hear them. Frankly, these people cannot be really blamed. Naturally, if you cannot see where the sound is coming from, and if you keep hearing it, you are bound to get worried.

In tinnitus, the sounds a person hears are actually perceptions. Since there’s no actual source, they are often referred to as “phantom noises”. Of course, the noises of tinnitus are not heard only during the night. You could hear them during the day too. But it definitely seems to become worse in the night. In a few people, the noises come and go as they please. And there are others who hear them all the time.

My life is now battery powered

This is all true since I have been fitted with a Pacemaker.

After my open heart surgery, (which is another story), which is when I had a repair done to my Mitral Valve. My heart then developed  an irregular heart beat known as atrial fibrillation.

Over the past four years, many different treatments were used to correct this, atrial fibrillation including electric shock treatment and tablets to slow the heart down. None worked for more than a few months, and I was steadily getting more incapacitated by any exercise that I did. Just walking short distances became an effort and left me breathless. My lifestyle was zero, and you may see from my blog, that I had all but abandoned it. I had written nothing for a long time. I had lost my energy.

The conclusion to all this was that I was offered a pacemaker, which was like the last chance saloon, all or nothing. There was no going back once the decision was made. When you have no lifestyle, and are constantly without energy, what choice do you have but to put you life once more into the hands of the medical team.

The day arrived and the pacemaker was implanted, quite frightening when the surgery was going to take place without any sedation at all.
The Doctor told me I would be wide awake when he was putting wires through my veins and into my heart. The operation site was just a local anesthetic, deadening an area near the collarbone. Well I was surprised that although I could feel him working, I had no sensation of pain at all. So the wires in my heart were in place, the and the whole lot was stitched up, soluble stitches I’m glad to say. And I went home the next day.

One month later, I had to be switched from my natural heartbeats, to the pacemaker which would take over from them. This involved a procedure called ablation, where a laser wire is sent via your groin, through your veins, and into your heart. This operation was, I am glad to say, was with some sedation. Having entered my heart, the laser was then deployed via computer, in knocking out all the electrical impulses that make the heart beat naturally.

The pacemaker was switched on… I was on battery power.

Over the next three months I was monitored via a ‘reader’ placed over the pacemaker site by my collarbone. From the reader, which is connected to a computer, they are able to program the pacemaker as required. Over this time I was brought from 90 beats per minute (bpm) to 80 bpm, and then to 70 bpm. They also programmed it to beat at 60 bpm, from 10 pm to 7 am, when I was sleeping.

The difference has been amazing, I no longer get out of breath and my energy level is coming back. I have been 4 years without energy or exercise, so I am slowly regaining it. But my life is now back on course. And of course the blogs can now get some enthusiasm into them once more.

AN update to all this, approximately one year on, is that I do have my life back thanks to all the medical teams that have, with their skills, rebuilt my heart valve and made it beat properly once more.
From a condition that was life threatening, and turning it into a life worth living, is something that the words “thank you” are completely inadaquate. I am alive thanks to the dedicated medical teams that never seem to get enough praise for all the lifesaving work that they routinely do every day.

But that as they say now, was once upon a time.

I believe that todays”lads”, or a more proper description of them as mindless vandals, have no fear of recognition, being caught, or seeing the irate owner of the car, shouting or threatening them. It will not hold up or interfere with the particular theft in hand.

Thing have changed now, they operate with probably four or more of them together, they are armed with at least a knife, and anybody who has the audacity to interfere in the completion of their crime, well thats simple, beat him to the ground, kick him as much as you can, and almost mandatory stamp on the head, and maybe stab him for good measure.

At this time the crime they were committing may be abandoned, as they now have something more to brag about.

With all the C.C.T.V. coverage we now have in this country, it is almost inevitable that this gang will be found somewhere on the streets close by. They will be seen, and the public response usually will bring them to court. I say bring them to court, and not bring them to justice. Those two statements are so very far apart.

How much is a persons life worth? The variation in interpretation of the crime between the courts, is so far apart. And why do we have this wonderful word “Manslaughter,” if a person dies trying to defend his property, he would not have died, had the vandals not been there, so in my book they have killed him, and causing or taking another persons life, to me is murder. So whether the person died accidentally during a confrontation, or by a deliberate act, surely once again the argument should be, that if they were not there the person would still be alive and well. They have murdered.

Even if a person falls down the stairs and dies as the result of a broken neck, trying to get away from the vandals, and they have not touched this person. Then once again the death was being caused by their presence and the fear they generated. They caused the death. If they were not there then it would not have happened.

The courts dish out sentences of a number of years, calling it life, and then saying that they must serve at least five ten or fifteen years.  Life? Then have the audacity to let them serve only half of that sentence. A vandal of eighteen or twenty, may be out of prison in just five years, and at twenty five to thirty years old, has his whole life to get on with, and maybe more crimes to commit, while the bereaved family of the victim, carry on with a true life sentence with the loss of a loved one.

But whatever you do, do not kill a burgalar or vandal.

You will be arrested and thrown in the cells, your name published for all to see, and a big debate whether you are a murderer or a victim defending yourself.

A target for other lawless vandals to get revenge for killing one of theirs.

Years ago, children were executed for stealing a loaf of bread to stop them from starving. We would not wish that for todays children, breaking the law then, had serious consequences.

But that was once upon a time.
