While we are required to comply with the law by allowing Border Patrol agents to board our buses when they ask to do so, we do not support or coordinate these searches, nor are we happy about them. We understand that this practice negatively impacts our customers, and we have had conversations with the Border Patrol to determine if there is anything that can be done to balance the enforcement of federal law with the dignity and privacy of our valued customers. We have also been in contact with the ACLU for the past few months in order to work towards a solution.

 

Greyhound is a private company caught in the middle of an issue that is not in our control. Our drivers face arrest and fines for obstructing these agents, and we would not want to put their safety, or the safety of our passengers at risk by attempting to physically stop a federal agent from boarding.

Wondering where we go when we’re looking for inspiration? Here are just a few:

1. Lincoln Memorial (Washington, D.C.)

Visiting Lincoln while in Washington, D.C. is an absolute must. But when you’re looking for inspiration, this spot has it all. From the impressive architecture to the location being the backdrop to monumental events in U.S. history, and the man whom the memorial was created to honor, you won’t have trouble finding inspiration here.

2. The Fearless Girl (New York City)

Let’s start with how our buses are designed:

Our engines have the latest technology available, lowering fuel consumption by 15 percent. Plus our bus’s transmissions have been re-programmed to be as efficient as possible when they’re on the road, which leads to less fuel burned and less pollution in the air. Nitrous oxide emissions are 50 percent lower, and carbon emissions are only 56 grams per passenger on our buses compared to 371 grams for a single-passenger car. 

The 1954 double decker Scenicruiser was a pretty great bus and we understand why it’s always been a fan-favorite. But as time has passed we saw that double decker buses weren’t as friendly to the environment because of their weight. Single level buses are gentler on roads minimizing the wear and tear on highways. Over time, roads have to have work done to keep them in good shape which can take a toll on the environment, and traffic jams from road construction leads to more fuel being burned. While buses are heavier than cars, we think we’ve found the best combination because on average one bus takes 32 cars off the road per day!

This means each bus can get as much as 450 passenger miles per gallon! This is a huge difference from domestic air carriers who only get 42 passenger MPG and single passenger cars that get 28 passenger MPG on average.

When it’s time to paint our buses, there are better ways to go than spraying it on. We’ve reduced how many chemical solvents and reducers are in the paint we use because even though they can make buses look great, they’re not very good for the environment. Whenever we use paint we use water-based paints that can be applied with rollers instead of being sprayed when we need to.

What about the stations?

Our buses aren’t the only things going green at Greyhound – we have LEED Certified stations in Nashville and Sacramento and have moved many of our stops into Intermodal facilitates where we share a space with other modes of transportation. By sharing a building with other carriers, including local transit, we’re cutting back on the resources needed for each of us to have a separate building that takes a toll on our environment – plus it makes traveling a whole lot more convenient when you need to transfer from your city bus to your Greyhound bus.

We aren’t happy with staying at status quo so we’re always looking at ways to be better stewards of the environment. We have monthly inspections to make sure everything is up to our standards and will test programs to see if we can make our operations a little greener. We’re even testing out a new bus wash at our Miami garage that will use 85 percent recycled water later this year!

Anything else?

We don’t think being eco-friendly should be something left to technology and equipment alone, which is why in addition to the tech inside the bus, our drivers are trained so we limit how much time our buses idle so fewer emissions are let into the air when they don’t need to be.

Recycling isn’t just for paper at Greyhound – our maintenance garages will recycle oil and retread our tires to make sure nothing goes to waste or ends up in a landfill when there’s no need.

Earth Day may come once a year but working to take care of our environment is something we do proudly every day.
