Unsatisfied with your Netbook’s Storage Capacity? Here are Your Options

Netbooks are possibly one of the best things to happen to computer users in years. Now you can get things done without the need to lug around a full-sized laptop. The price point has become so low that buying them is practical for almost everyone and the market continues to get introduced to newer, faster, slimmer models for everyone to choose from. Netbooks are amazing, but the SSD models still lack in a few key areas, storage being the primary one.

Because the netbook was meant to be small, lightweight, easy to transport and most importantly, cheaper than a laptop, many components were scaled back; storage capacity was one of the first ways to cut costs. Some of the smaller Netbooks utilize solid-state drives, or SSD for short. These drives require less power to operate and when combined with more efficient, smaller screens, increase battery life compared to standard notebooks. Because SSD technology is still new though, most drive capacities are very small, and in order to keep the system price low, sometimes under $300. For example, you might get only have four to eight gigabytes of storage. That’s fine, since a netbook wasn’t designed to store your entire iTunes catalog or do heavy Photoshop work. However, that shouldn’t stop you from having access to photos, music or any other digital file, from anywhere you are.

There are a few options to expand your Netbook’s storage capacity. Online storage providers like Mozy and iDrive come to mind, but they require a broadband connection and monthly fees to use. Your data is also held on someone else’s servers and not everyone is comfortable with that, especially for sensitive documents.

Network attached storage devices, NAS for short, are an option. Products like the My Book World Edition by Western Digital kill two birds with one stone. Actually, more like three or four. The My Book World Edition offers 2 TB of storage and plugs directly into your router via the included Ethernet cable. Any computer on your home network can now gain access to the NAS device and move, read, write, create or modify files. In addition, you can access the My Book World Edition via the Internet if you so choose. It gives you the equivalent of online storage but also the capability to keep it private and secure.

You can probably tell, I really like the NAS solution; however, there is one drawback. It is a physical device stored at a specific location where Mother Nature may cause a bit of grief. So of the three options available to expand the storage capacity of a netbook, a NAS device packs the most features, has no monthly costs and doesn’t require you to take anything special with you when you’re on the go. But you will be wise to also have copies of your data stored in some other locations on the off chance that something physically happens to your NAS device, whether it be an online solution or backing up to an external drive periodically and storing that device in a separate physical location.

Viewsonic recently launched two new portable media player products that may help the company gain significant market share.

Viewsonic launched two new models, MovieBook VPD400 and Moviebook VPD500. Both these models offer HD playback via the video-out. The Moviebook models feature 4.3″ and 5″ 800×480 LCD displays respectively. A high-capacity 1900mAh battery will let you enjoy up to four hours of video playback or fifteen hours for music and thanks to its 8GB of internal memory and support for micro SD expansion slot, you can store a lot of videos and mp3s on this PMP.

LG debuts Full HD LED LCD HDTV

LG Electronics recently introduced a “Full HD” LED LCD HDTV and claims to have broken barriers in home entertainment. The first impression looking at this LED TV is that its very thin, as thin as probably a 100 pages book or a sheet of 1.5-inch thick glass.

The newly launched SL90 series HDTVs, both 47-inch and 42-inch TVs, by LG electronics features LED lighting and other display technologies. Unlike other LCD TVs, the new LG series TVs use a single-layer design and narrow bezel to create these stunning sets, designed to maximize the viewing experience as well as enhancing the home interior.

The LED LCD screen produces high dynamic contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1 and uses a special film lamination technology for better color tuning, gradation and reduction of glare. The SL90 reduces motion blur and creates more natural looking images for a better viewing experience.

Panasonic Blu-ray Disc Home Theater System

Panasonic recently launched its first 2.1 channel Blu-ray Disc home theater system, the SC-BTX70 that promises realistic virtual 7.1 channel sound experience.

The SC-BTX70 sports a compact form factor and despite being a 2.1 system, it claims to be able to deliver 7.1 channel sound system through a wide listening area. This home theater from Panasonic uses the advanced proprietary surround technology to deliver Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD virtual 7.1-channel surround sound.

This model also features VIERA CAST that lets you connect the system to Internet and watch Youtube videos, Picasa albums and Amazon Video-on-Demand (VOD) online movie rental service. Not just that, using its BD-Live feature, you can play Internet games too.

Disable autorun in Windows to prevent new USB boot virus infection

PC World recently published an article titled ‘How Windows Autorun Can Autoinfect’ that talked about the new USB based malware which is the new boot virus spreading from USB devices to Windows systems such as XP. The article stresses on the need for the IT admins to disable autorun in Windows to prevent such USB based viruses from infecting the systems on their network.

The problem is not just with the USB flashdisk drives but also those numerous USB based devices such as memory cards, USB hard drives and portable devices that Windows’ autorun features can detect and autoplay. To add more to the problem, when a user connects his/her device, the program contained on the disk is automatically run by the operating system. This is a big problem as IT admins have no control over their users as they can connect any device whenever they want to. To solve this problem, IT admins must disable autorun in Windows.

How to disable autorun in Windows?

The steps to disable autorun feature in Windows operating systems such as Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 are mentioned below.

Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following entry in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutorun
Right-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0xFF to disable all types of drives. Or, to selectively disable specific drives, use a different value as described in the “How to selectively disable specific Autorun features” section.
Click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

JVC unveils 4.1 Channel Home Theater Systems

JVC has launched two new home theater systems, JVC TH-BA1 and TH-SB100 both being 4.1 channel system featuring low-profile front surround sound bar and a wireless subwoofer. The power output of the system is 220W (Most likely RMS). The sound bar has 4 speakers and each one of those speakers is amplified using the built-in amplifier and a sound processor that features Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS decoding.

Just like the front sound bar, the subwoofer also features a built-in 100-watt digital amplifier and connects to the front surround sound bar using 2.4GHz digital wireless technology, thus eliminating the need for wiring the whole setup. The accompanying remote control lets you operate the power and audio functionality of the speakers.

The JVC TH-BA1 and TH-SB100 home theater systems will be available by the end of september for $399.99 and $699.99 respectively.
