From the museum that brought visitors the very first interactive multimedia gallery tour back in 2001 comes a new way to explore modern and contemporary art. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) presents ArtGameLab, an ongoing exhibition in the museum’s Koret Visitor Education Center that presents a selection of prototype crowdsourced games designed by SFMOMA’s community, for SFMOMA’s community.

Last summer SFMOMA issued an open call for simple games devised to be played inside the museum for audiences of all ages. Visitors can now view the results and pick up instructions for playing five of the 50 game proposals that artists and game designers submitted, along with a series of digital games designed by the museum’s education department. The exhibition is organized by Erica Gangsei, manager of interpretive media at SFMOMA.

In addition to playing these games, visitors are also encouraged to submit their own ideas for engaging activities in the museum by visiting the exhibition’s game-design station. SFMOMA’s social media channels will also post game-related activities, inviting the public to share their experiences, photos, and ideas online.

Reflecting the Bay Area’s renown for pioneering new technologies and ways of thinking, SFMOMA is widely acknowledged as a leader among museums worldwide for using innovative means to engage audiences of all ages, both on site and online. From its original website—one of the first launched by a U.S. art museum—and prizewinning interpretive CD-ROMS of the 1990s to its innovative podcasts and multimedia gallery tours of the 2000s, SFMOMA has consistently forged new models for museum education by developing in-house expertise in a diverse range of tools that enhance public understanding of modern and contemporary art.

Extending that legacy of innovation, ArtGameLab presents the following games and game designers:

The Curious Scholarship of Dr. Bedcannon

This alternate reality game (ARG) by a Bay Area–based interactive fiction project called the Elsewhere Philatelic Society (http://stampsfromelsewhere.com) draws on the visual vocabulary of stamp collecting, in a subtle nod to the covert world in Thomas Pynchon’s novel The Crying of Lot 49. Players explore select works from the perspective of Dr. Bedcannon, a conspiracy theorist curator who has surreptitiously provided a map and key to the visitor in an effort to reveal his theories about hidden secrets in SFMOMA’s collection. Players are led through clues embedded in SFMOMA’s permanent collection until they complete the key, which in turn leads them to the location of a talisman (or “prize”) that they may collect. Some players may note similarities in tone and format to the now-disbanded Jejune Institute; these ARG designers are carrying forward the phenomenon of Bay Area interactive fiction with the Jejune Institute’s blessing.

Super Going

Designed by Ian Kizu-Blair and Sam Lavigne of San Francisco–based game design studio Situate, this multiplayer online offering is a social adventure that takes players beyond the ordinary into collaborative and crowdsourced missions. For SFMOMA, the game’s various missions focus on possibilities for exploration, creativity, and interpersonal interaction at the museum. Players may choose from a range of missions or create their own for other players to accomplish. Super Going has a social media report-back function in which players are encouraged to log on to the game’s website (http://supergoing.com/sfmoma) and post documentation of their missions, see what other players have done, and receive additional missions.

I Know What I Like

A role-playing game created by Tom Russotti’s Institute for Aesthletics (www.aesthletics.org)—a project dedicated to “playing sports as artistic practice”—operates in the boundaries between social sculpture and performance. Players roll dice or simply select a card to become one of six characters. They must then don a mask that represents that character and explore the museum with that character’s wishes, desires, and agenda in mind instead of their own.

Dialogues in Motion

This performance game functions as a reverse version of charades. Created by Ben Carpenter and Sudhu Tewari with illustrations by Meredith Scheff, the game invites players in SFMOMA’s galleries to be on the lookout for certain vocabulary words relating to the artwork on view, whether overhead in other visitors’ conversations, spotted in wall texts, or passing through the player’s own thoughts. Each time a word is identified, the player makes a corresponding physical gesture—becoming a performer—and marks a box on a scorecard. A fully marked scorecard is the “win state” of the game.

Didactic Mad Libs

The popular activity of Mad Libs is employed in this word game as a surrealist exercise designed to question institutional authority around the construction of meaning. Before entering the galleries, visitors fill out Mad Libs derived from wall texts and descriptive object labels around the museum; later they seek out the original texts in the galleries for comparison, often with humorous results.

Miuccia Prada is the Meryl Streep of the fashion world. No Oscar nods under her belt, but it’s the superlative consistency that makes her fashion’s surest thing. Like watching a brilliant Streep performance, you can signal out the very particular ‘isms’ of the Prada brand with each new collection, and Fall is packed to the brim with them.

Subversion has proven to be her most identifiable calling-card. In a collection heavy on layering and suiting, there was a set of bare-midriff coats that scaled down the backs of models like some perverse take on a man’s penguin tux. For the most part it was unequivocally femme – an emphasis on the waist by way of narrow, sleeveless overcoats, each side of the plankets encrusted in black and white tsarina joaillerie embroideries. That trick is old hat Prada. We’ve seen that kind of sensuous skewing on her rumpled and crinkled taffeta dresses back in Spring 2009.

But there was a slight mannish subtext. Those oversized rubber sole shoes should feel somewhat familiar – you don’t have to go too far in the archives to pinpoint where those came from – so should the eyewear, an even more modern take on the chic Edwardian sunglasses from her menswear show a little over a month ago (Where the mens’ were red, the womens’ were purple, ditto on the grandiose carpet that filled the same show space).

It was a veritable layers-fest. No dress came down without a pair of tailored black flares with encrusted cuffs underneath. And when color came into play, Prada sported some Mod-ish 60s Pucci-esque micro-prints that, at times, seemed to mirror the regal geometry of the purple expanse. Everyone is bound to rant, rave, shoot, buy, succumb. Just like every other season. That’s an ultimate old-hat Prada-ism if there ever was one.

The house of Gucci is one of those rare high-end luxe brands whose menswear far, far outdoes its womenswear season in, season out – at least that has been the case under the direction of Frida Giannini. Its menswear provokes drooling – for the past few seasons the womenswear has done anything but. Although, you’d never know it considering that Gucci’s much celebrated Fall ’11 collection (which I wasn’t a fan of, in the slightest) graced an approximate 103 covers worldwide last year.

But there’s good news for Giannini and crew. Her latest ready-to-wear is an outstanding triumph. This was an almost all-black, lugubrious affair that molds all of Giannini’s capital R Romantic flourishes into something more akin to danger. What transpired was equal parts Rimbaud (for a case in point, please refer to look #2 on Anja Rubik – a black on black flower brocade suit with matching overcoat) and sorceress (watch Homer’s Circe come to life in that decadent oil-slicked black feather ensemble on Daria Strokous or the palpable sexuality of Sigrid Agren’s sheer jet-beaded gown).

It was an incredible amalgam: The precision and elegance of Gucci dancing face to face by candelabra with the poetry exorcised by the ilk of Ann Demeulemeester. The dark muses should take over Giannini more often. This may not grace as many covers as its Fall predecessor, but it sure as hell helped to restore the faith.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has acquired a pair of the iconic ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio led a group of “angel donors” whose gifts to the Academy Foundation enabled the purchase. In addition to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, a component fund of CCF Environmental and Humanitarian Causes, donations came from producer-director Steven Spielberg and Terry Semel, co-chair of LACMA and the former chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. and Yahoo!, along with other donors.

“The ruby slippers occupy an extraordinary place in the hearts of movie audiences the world over,” said Bob Iger, president and CEO of the Walt Disney Co. and chair of the capital campaign for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. “This is a transformative acquisition for our collection.”

“Leo’s passionate leadership has helped us bring home this legendary piece of movie history,” added Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “It’s a wonderful gift to the Academy museum project, and a perfect representation of the work we do year-round to preserve and share our film heritage.”

These slippers, known as the “Witch’s Shoes,” are in the most pristine condition of the four pairs of ruby slippers known to exist. It is widely believed that these are the slippers Judy Garland wore in close-ups and insert shots, most famously when Dorothy clicks her heels three times to return to Kansas. They are called the “Witch’s Shoes” because they are likely the pair seen on the feet of the Wicked Witch of the East after Dorothy’s house falls on the witch.

After production of the film ended in 1939, the ruby slippers were stored on MGM’s Culver City lot for the next three decades. Several pairs of slippers were discovered in 1970 by costumer Kent Warner while he was preparing for that year’s historic auction of MGM costumes, props and other production-related items. One pair of slippers was sold at the auction and was donated anonymously to the Smithsonian in 1979.

Warner kept the finest pair – the “Witch’s Shoes” – in his private collection for more than a decade before selling them at auction in 1981. They were sold again in 1988 to another private collector, and have been displayed publicly only a handful of times in the years since, most notably at the National Portrait Gallery and the Library of Congress. The 2012 sale to the Academy was handled by auction house Profiles in History.

Last October, the Academy and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art announced plans to establish the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures inside the historic May Company building, currently known as LACMA West. The building has been a Los Angeles landmark since its opening in 1939, the same year “The Wizard of Oz” premiered.

Christopher Bailey’s “The Gentlemen”, his Fall 2012 menswear collection, gives way to his feminine exploration of the ultimate English sartorial crossroads – the haute interminglings at the corner of “Town and Field”.

Crisp white worker’s shirts (Field) worn above sensuous body-con herringbone pencil skirts (Town), made for the most recognizable, accessible and covet-worthy looks in Bailey’s dichotomous play book.There was also a play on the topsy-turvy here, with stunning velvet skirts imbued with a sensuous heft by way of asymmetrical ruffles that looked anything but saccharine. He played to this kind of tilting with his tribal print skirts last season – in velvet, the elegance of the house codes shines through – a palpable grasp at Blue Bloodedness.

But just like his menswear, it’s the earthy, slightly childish, oh shucks gravitas of the Field, of a crisp autumn setting made to roll around in, that made this another solid triumph for Bailey. Ever since his menswear debut men have been clamboring, waiting impatiently, dying for those lovely woodland creature embroidered knits to hit the shelves. Now that the ladies have been granted the same kind of options, prepare for similar, maniacal expectations.

Fashion and celluloid make for the perfect marriage. The two have gone hand in hand since time immemorial it seems. But every season, there’s that one seemingly random film that serves as the source material and inspiration behind a collection. Last season, that distinction – for the most random film inspiration in the fashion week cycle – belonged to Akris, whose Spring outing was sparked from John Frankenheimer’s 60s action flick ‘Grand Prix’. This season, so far, it goes to Christopher Kane, who just served up quite the doozy.

For Fall, Kane looked to William Friedkin’s early 80s cult-classic ‘Cruising’, with Al Pacino as an undercover cop on the tracks of a serial killer offing gay men in the final days of disco. It could not have been a more inversed, about-face performance for Kane, who sucked out the lustre and sweet nostalgia of his brilliant Spring performance and embraced the seedy underbelly of the night life scene with sumptuous velvets, mordant pinstripes and bouquets of flowers more appropriate for the Grand Guignol than for sweetheart corsages. It was a completely new articulation from last season, but by no means any less beguiling.

Mara Hoffman, Fall 2012

The Mara Hoffman FW2012 show was stunning and Makeup Forever Alliance artist Lottie was the key.  Lottie wanted the look to have a nomadic desert-like feel, sun kissed skin that glowed with metallic highlights.

Lottie first applied Makeup Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation to give the models a flawless canvas she then sculpted the cheeks using Makeup Forever Mat Bronze on the hollows of her cheeks.

For a well-blended, sun kissed glow she then applied Makeup Forever Shine On Powder from the top of the cheeks to the temples and then used Makeup Forever HD’s powder to take away the shine.

The eyes were shaded using Makeup Forever Eye Shadow #17 and Makeup Forever Aqua Cream #14. Next, Lottie blended the shadows with Makeup Forever Star Powder #922,#930, and #946. For a metallic pop, Lottie used a wet brush and applied Makeup Forever Metal Powder #2 to the corner of the eyes, and then lined inside the water lines with Makeup Forever Khol Pencil #9. She finished the eyes with a thick coat of Makeup Forever Smoky Lash mascara.

Eyebrows:

  • Lottie applied Makeup Forever Brow Seal for a simple yet groomed brow.

Lips:

  • Makeup Forever Glossy Full #10 was added to the lips to create a natural look with shine.

  • M∙A∙C Pro Gloss Texture — blended with a bit of Blooz Kohl and applied to the eyelids for a midnight glossy shine
  • M∙A∙C Pro Black Black Chromaline — defines the root of lashes
  • Black Fix Studio Fix Lash — applied through both upper and lower lashes

Lips

  • Lip Conditioner SPF 15 — hydrates and provides the lip with natural shine
  • Soar Lip Pencil — a soft hint was applied to add only a blush of color.

Edun collection for Fall 2012 was absolutely gorgeous. But, the makeup that MAC makeup artist Yadim turned out was bananas! As Yadim says it was “fresh and easy, with a punk twist to it”

M.A.C. artist Diane Kendal is consistently phenomenal and Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2012 was no different.  She called the look “Country meet city. Equestrian lifestyle, sporty and elite” and it looked stunning.

You cannot get more creative and beautiful and inspirational than M.A.C artist Kabuki. It was such a pleasure to see Kabuki’s work on Zac Posen‘s runway. As Kabuki said the look was about “the tradition of Geisha of Japan is re-envisioned as a sleek couture confection. Shades of ultra glamorous stars for a bygone age- Lara Turner, Marlene Dietrich mixed with an edgy new wave angularity”
