At least, that’s what it seems like for Wilco, the experimental, country-tinged alt-rock band that has been inspiring obsessive fans since its inception in 1994.  And while many bands can claim to have lots of fans, it’s not every performing artist that can say it has a sandwich shop serving up “an ounce of comfort and a pinch of good music” in its honor. Thanks to the Sky Blue Sky Sandwich Shop in Toronto, though, Wilco is the beneficiary of this hunger-quashing honor.

The sandwich shop, named after Wilco’s 2007 album, offers breakfast, sandwiches and coffee to hungry music fans roaming the streets of Toronto. The shop is located in the heart of Toronto’s Koreatown, at 605 Bloor St W, just west of the Bathurst subway station.  And while the small Canadian shop may not be distinctive in the kind of refreshments it offers, a quick glance at Sky Blue Sky’s menu shows that the sandwiches themselves are quite unique.

In what is perhaps the first culinary homage of its kind, Chad Comfort, the owner of the Sky Blue Sky Sandwich Shop, has named every one of their offerings after a Wilco song.  And the names aren’t random, either – the song chosen to identify each sandwich is based upon its ingredients.  For example, the “Hell Is Chrome” sandwich (named after the second song on 2004’s A Ghost Is Born), features deviled egg salad and sweet pickles. Meanwhile, the “One Wing,” (track three on 2009’s Wilco (The Album)) boasts “thinly sliced oven roasted turkey with cream cheese, cranberry sauce and a hint of stuffing.”  Surely, Jeff Tweedy and company could never have imagined that they would be inspiring the contents of Canadian lunches when writing their tunes.

The album that launched a thousand...sandwiches?

But Sky Blue Sky Sandwich shop offers more than just sandwiches – visitors will also find cookies and bread (freshly baked daily by Comfort) and soups (made from scratch).  For breakfast, there are bagels, muffins, frittatas, toast and oatmeal.  And if absolutely nothing on the menu appeals to you (unlikely!), Comfort offers a create-your-own-sandwich option, allowing visitors to choose from five kinds of meat, three kinds of cheese and nine bread options.  Comfort also provides a great atmosphere, as he is friendly and dedicated to making each and every customer happy.  One feature that has brought a smile to many a diner’s face is the 5 percent discount for online orders, on which one can note preferred pick-up time.  Sky Blue Sky also offers catering services

So what is it about Wilco that would make someone want to dedicate a sandwich shop and nearly 20 culinary concoctions after the band?  To be honest – it’s not quite clear.  But in any case, the idea is pretty entertaining and original, much like the band itself.  Wilco is known for its long, energetic shows and enthusiasm in dealing with fans.  The band also likes to give back when it can, such as its recent Downloads-for-Donations campaign, in which those who pledged to support charities benefiting Haiti earthquake victims were treated to a pair of audio downloads of full-length concerts.  Wilco also manages to find a soft spot in many hearts due to its turbulent past and difficulty in dealing with unfaithful record companies.  However, two Grammys and a sandwich shop later, the band seems to be on pretty solid ground.

A couple weeks ago we’ve written up a post titled “Who Will Win the Online Movie Rental War Netflix vs Blockbuster”. Seems like the fight is about to be over. Although our big Online Blockbuster review seemed to put Blockbuster in good eyes against Netflix’s online DVD rental.. Things seem to be otherwise.

“The increasingly competitive industry conditions under which we operate has negatively impacted our results of operations and cash flows and may continue to in the future,” Blockbuster reps wrote, according to the Associated Press. “These factors raise substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern.” According to the Guardian, Blockbuster lost $569 million last year, and is currently struggling to deal with more than $975 million in debt.

Shares of Blockbuster Inc. fell to 28 cents on Wednesday afternoon, even as Blockbuster pledged to do more to haul its business into the 21st century. The Associated Press reports that Blockbuster opened 2,000 DVD rental kiosks in 2009. Some 10,000 more will apparently be opened by midway through 2010. Meanwhile, Blockbuster has pushed its own DVD-by-mail service, which costs between $8.99 and $16.99 for a monthly subscription.

Could this be the end of Blockbuster? Could this be the beginning of a new era? of which Online DVD rentals and online video streaming are the future? Will TiVO take over?

Si*Sé is a downtempo and electronic group from New York City. The main members of the band are Carol C (vocals, DJ) and Cliff Cristofaro (producer). Other members of the band include Ryan Farley (drums), Neil Ochoa (percussion) and Morgan Phillips (Bass). Jeannie Oliver was the viola player during the first two albums, but left the band in 2005. Olivia Martinez (viola) and Tarrah Reynolds (violin) have also played in place of Jeannie over the years. In 2001 they toured worldwide with Talking Head’s David Byrne. They have also performed with Norah Jones, Kinky, Kraftwerk, Los Amigos Invisibles, Cody Chestnut & The Roots, Gotan Project, James Brown, Julieta Venegas, Cesaria Evora and Natacha Atlas.

The five years between Si*Sé’s last album, More Shine, and its new five-song EP, Gold, were not spent in vain. With the rapid shift in how people consume and experience music, the New York City-based band was waiting for the right opportunity to strike out on its own. These five songs are guaranteed to satiate hungry fans until the next full-length album.

Daniel: Tell us about yourself, where are you from where are you now and how did you get started in this industry?

Carol: I was born and raised in New York City where I still reside. I started singing at a very early age. My mother was an aspiring singer and sang to me all the time. My first public experience with singing was at my local church and in my Junior High School “Glee Club”. I then studied classical opera for 4 years.

Daniel: When was it that you first discovered that you have this amazing voice of yours?

Carol: Thank you for saying that. My 3rd grade teacher had our class sing a children’s song she had taught us. We had sung it in unison many times. I had no idea this day, she was actually auditioning us for our school’s big annual show. She went around one by one listening to every student sing. When she got to me she stopped, got really close and stood there for a while. Afterwards, she told me I had a beautiful voice and that she had chosen me for the main solo for that year’s show. This was a huge deal for me. It was the first time anyone outside of my family had complimented my singing. Unfortunately, the school lost funding that year and the annual show didn’t happen. But I think that day changed my life.

Daniel: Where do you draw your inspiration from, and what motivates you to continue?

Carol: I get inspired by everything around me. Sometimes it’s an experience, a friend, a movie, a book, art.
Music was my best friend in many ways growing up. It’s also created a special connection between my mother and I.

Daniel: As a New Yorker, which venue has been your favorite to perform at?

Carol: I don’t have a favorite but have really enjoyed playing at Highline Ballroom, Bowery Ballroom, Irving Plaza (Now the Fillmore New York) and S.O.B’s.

Daniel: The music industry is constantly changing its structure. What is your feeling about today’s music market?

Carol: I think technology has always reshaped the music industry and forced it to adapt to the times. When vinyl was invented concert promoters were upset that it might discourage people to go to concerts. Then radio was supposed to threatened record sales. As a kid I remember taping things off the radio on my brother’s cassette player. Everyone I knew was getting music for free this way. The digital world has just made it incredibly easy to share music files within seconds. I think people these days are more willing to support independent artists and labels than the major ones. But everyone in the music industry to a certain degree is being affected.

Daniel: What are your hopes for the release?

Carol: I hope the music is enjoyed by many.

Daniel: In your own words, can you describe to us what we can expect from your album?

Carol: We explored with some new styles and sounds for this EP, including our first official cover song. A cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”. As a band we love so many different genres and are always experimenting with new ones. It’s how we stay excited about the creative process.

According to SingersRoom.com Jay Z will be spending a few more weeks in Europe this summer thanks to a growing line up of tour and festival dates.

MTV’s hit reality dance competition series from Warner Horizon Television – Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew – will up the ante on Season Five star power when multi-platinum superstar Usher challenges the crews this Thursday, March 18th, at 10p.m. ET/PT. The Grammy® Award-winning and LaFace/Jive Recording artist triple-threat will appear in personalized video messages to ask the remaining five crews to incorporate his renowned and trailblazing choreography into their routines as they perform to his smash hits. Crews will “usher” in their hottest performances to date as they dance to Usher club anthems that include “Yeah!” and “Love In This Club,” in addition to his new single “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” from his upcoming March 30th album release, Raymond v Raymond. The Usher challenge continues the show’s tradition of producing episodes dedicated entirely to the music of exceptional performers such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Missy Elliott.

On January 28, the Season Five premiere of “America’s Best Dance Crew” delivered a 2.2 P12-34 rating and over 2.4 million total viewers. Season-to-date, “America’s Best Dance Crew” is a top 10 original cable series among P12-34.

“Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew” is hosted by Mario Lopez and shot on location in Los Angeles as dance crews of five to seven members perform their hottest moves for dance supremacy and a $100,000 cash prize. Every performance-themed episode gives insight into the crews’ emotion, spirit and inspiration as they step up to the challenge and showcase their innovative choreography and skills. Viewers from around the country choose their favorite crews via text messaging and online voting (http://dancecrew.mtv.com). The two crews with the least number of votes will be up for elimination, with the judges – JC Chasez, Lil Mama and Omarion – making the final call on which crew will be sent home. Correspondent Layla Kayleigh covers all the backstage reactions as one crew is eliminated each week, ultimately revealing the nation’s best dance crew.

This week’s InTouch has the shocking cover story that recent Oscar winner Sandra Bullock’s husband, Jesse James, carried on a months-long affair while she was off working on The Blind Side in Austin. Tattoo model Michelle McGee claims to have met Jesse when she wanted to model for his West Coast Choppers.

She tells the magazine, “I asked him, ‘What’s going on with you and Sandra?’ He said, ‘She doesn’t live here. She has a house in Austin. She is filming, and I can’t talk about it.’” Sandra was so sweet in thanking him in her many awards season acceptance speeches, so it seems like this just can’t be true. However, she’s already apparently pulled out of an appearance in the UK due to “unforeseen circumstances.” It hasn’t been a good week for the marriages of best-actress winners after Kate Winslet’s split announcement, leading some to believe there’s an Academy Award curse.
