The ‘Tik Tok’ singer admits she has an unusual way of sourcing her vintage outfits, and regularly sifts through trash to find a good item of clothing.

She said: “I like digging through thrift stores and sometimes the garbage – yes it’s true! – sometimes the garbage. It’s not like I’m going to go into the garbage with crusty food on it; all garbage is not equal. But if I see a pile of pretty sweet-looking shirts laying on the ground, yeah, I’ll dig through it.”

As well as going to any length to get a good outfit, the eccentric hitmaker also admits she wears a “shield” of glitter when she goes on stage, but has accepted it is hard to get off afterwards.

She revealed to MTV: “Right before I go onstage, I lather my body in baby oil and cover my entire body with a shield of glitter. Because it just pops! It just looks great! It’s really hard to get the glitter off. I’ve just given up. I’ve accepted that it will just be there. It’s in all my suitcases, it’s usually in my food, in my drinks.”

Martin Freeman turned down the chance to play Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit’.

The actor was offered the lead in Peter Jackson’s big-screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel but declined because he had already signed to 20 weeks filming BBC TV drama ‘Sherlock’ next year, in which he plays Sherlock Holmes sidekick Dr. Watson.

A source said: “It was one of the most difficult decisions of his career, MGM, who are making the film, only got a formal offer over in the last couple of weeks.

“It was too late for Martin because he had already signed up for another series of ‘Sherlock’. It was agonising but he had no other choice.”

Jackson – who directed the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, a follow-up to ‘The Hobbit’ book – is now holding auditions in London, New York and Sydney in the hope of finding an unknown actor for the role.

Paul Weller is favourite to win tonight’s (07.09.10) Mercury Music Prize.

There have been an unprecedented number of bets at bookmakers on the singer and internet polls have been flooded with votes for his album ‘Wake Up The Nation’ to win the coveted industry accolade.

A spokesperson for bookmaker William Hill said: “This is a pretty unprecedented gamble – certainly in the history of the Mercury, and also every other music award.”

While the public are in favour of Paul – known as the Modfather – winning however, the Barclaycard Mercury Prize is decided by a panel of figures from within the music industry and has notoriously produced some unexpected winners since its inception in 1992.

Virtually unknown artists frequently triumph over more established acts when the award is given, such as last year, when virtual unknown hip hop artist Speech Debelle scooped the award.

The winner does usually see a boost in their profile however, and it was after scooping the award in 2003 that obscure 16-year-old rapper Dizzee Rascal got mainstream attention which started him on the path to becoming one of the most popular performers in the UK.

Paul, 52, was last nominated in 1994 for his ‘Wild Wood’ album, which lost out to M People’s album ‘Elegant Slumming’, though Paul says he had never expected to win that year because he was up against Blur’s career defining album ‘Parklife’.

‘Eton Rifles’ hitmaker Paul added that he’s already started work on the follow up to ‘Wake Up The Nation’ and has hit something of a creative spurt.

He told the Daily Star newspaper: “We’ve done around eight tracks in four days and they sound mega. I would say it’s more pop, it’s different again, another move on.

“It’s not about shocking people, it’s just me being a little more willing to push the boat out.”

Axl Rose claims the “source of all the insanity” in his life is his voice.

The volatile Guns ‘N’ Roses singer – who is renowned for keeping fans waiting for hours past stage time before starting a performance, and is prone to aggressive outbursts – blames all his wild antics on the way he has to sing, according to his friend and touring partner Sebastian Bach.

Sebastian explained to US radio station 94 WYSP in Pennsylvania: “Everybody has all these theories as to why he acts the way he acts. And there’s no big mystery. He tells me the source of all of the insanity – it’s his voice.

“It’s his job to sing like that, and sometimes that sound is hard for him. To sing in that range is just not an easy thing to do. And if it takes him forty-five more minutes to warm up his pipes so he can sing ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ -then, you drive around in your car and put on Guns ‘N’ Roses and just go for it.”

Guns ‘N’ Roses present European tour has been beset with problems, with the band’s taking to the stage late because Axl, 48, was asleep then having the sound cut in Reading, England after their set ran past a curfew, and the group were further bottled offstage in Dublin, Ireland, after they started a show an hour late.

Meanwhile details of Guns ‘N’ Roses backstage requirements have been revealed, with a number of very specific items, including a room for Axl to sleep in containing a bed, a sofa, a coffee table, six lamps and a rug. This room must also be decorated with 18 red and 18 white fresh roses.

Wyclef Jean has branded Sean Penn a “coke sniffer” for criticizing his bid for Haitian presidency.

The ‘Yele Haiti’ singer accused the actor of not noticing the good work he has been doing in the earthquake stricken country because he was too busy taking illegal drugs.

He said: “I got a message for Sean Penn – maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine.”

Although both stars have been heavily involved in aid work in Haiti since its capital, Port Au Prince, was hit by an earthquake which claimed 230,000 lives in January, a bitter war of words has broken out between the pair after Wyclef announced his intentions to run for president of the country in August.

Hitting out at him, Sean said he felt Wyclef’s campaign was “about a vision of flying around the world, talking to people”.

He later said: “As an ambassador at large, he has been virtually silent.”

He also wrote in a newspaper column: “None among us felt or expressed anger toward it, but rather a universal sadness for his silence, as he is America’s most admired cultural link to Haiti.”

Sean has also quickly refuted Wyclef’s outburst, calling it “highly irresponsible and false.”

A spokesperson for the actor, Mara Buxbaum, said in a statement: “Mr. Jean is clearly unfamiliar with the physical demands put upon volunteers in Haiti. As aid workers there, the notion of depleting the body’s immune system thru the use of illicit drugs is ludicrous.

“More specifically, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (a.k.a. JPHRO) has a ZERO tolerance policy for any and all illegal drugs.

“As the leader of this organization, Sean Penn has not only set this policy, but adheres to it. That Mr. Jean would make such a false accusation is reckless and saddening, but not surprising.”

A few weeks after announcing his plans to run for president of Haiti, the country’s electoral officials declared the singer was ineligible to run.

A reason wasn’t given for the disqualification, but it is thought to be because the singer had not lived in Haiti for five years, a requirement for candidacy.

Paris Hilton’s quick release from jail has been defended by officials.

The heiress – who was arrested in Las Vegas last month alongside boyfriend Cy Waits for cocaine possession – was allowed to leave the Clark County Detention Center after just three hours, which is roughly half the average time it takes to process those faced with the same charge.

However, officials at the correctional facility have defended the decision to speed up the process for the socialite, arguing her presence would have caused too much chaos among the inmates.

Jim Dixon, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Deputy Chief, said: “Yeah, she was treated differently so I don’t have a disruption of my process here at the county jail. When you bring in somebody like that, everybody comes over and tries to look at them. I’d have officers attempting to keep inmates away from her. I’d have disruptions.”

Despite her seemingly special treatment, the officer insisted Paris was still subject to all regular booking procedures.

She is set to appear before Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Joe Bonaventure on October 27.
