2001 - 2011: The Lost Decade

The decade of 2001 to 2011 will probably be looked at as a lost decade for many. Economically stagnant and the major stock market indexes in North America were higher in the late 90s than today. It was a decade that started with George W. Bush and a vengeful American administration.

Personally the decade saw my quality of life shift significantly and remain there.

We may finally be able to look past this decade and move forward as a society and individually.

About 44 per cent Canadians say they've coped with a mental health problem such as extreme stress, depression, substance abuse or schizophrenia, according to a survey that suggests employees aren't the only ones paying the price

The report, Building Mentally Healthy Workplaces, was released by the Conference Board of Canada today based on a national survey of more than 1,000 employees

In the survey, 12 per cent of respondents said they were currently experiencing a mental health issue and another 32 per cent said they'd faced one in the past

The report suggests more openness in discussing mental health in the workplace and training for managers

Thailand General Election 2011

A general election will be held throughout Thailand on Sunday, 3 July, 2011.

Following the political crisis of 2005-2006 the People’s Power Party won a majority of seats in the parliament in 2007. Samak Sundaravej, party leader, became the 25th Prime Minister of Thailand.

On December 2, 2008, the People’s Power Party was dissolved due to alleged electoral fraud. This led to a series of demonstrations by Red Shirt protestors. As the protests grew, commerce in Bangkok ground to a halt. On April 10, 2010 the government attempted to disperse the protesters, leading to violent resistance where 27 protestors were killed and 800 wounded.

A November 14, 2010 election was agreed to in exchange for an end to the protests. Some protesters claimed that only the Election Commission had the authority to set a date for elections. Eventually the election date was set at July 3, 2011 by virtue of Royal Decree.

At United Nations Headquarters today, the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO) released the first-ever World Report on Disability with new estimates that more than one billion people are living with some form of disability. The report urges governments and their development allies to invest more leadership and financing in services and programs that could unlock the potential of people with disabilities.

UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression Frank La Rue warned Friday that fearful Governments are increasingly restricting the flow of information on the Internet due to its potential to mobilize people to challenge the status quo.

"There should be as little restriction as possible to the flow of information via the Internet, except in a few, very exceptional, and limited circumstances prescribed by international human rights law..."

"Essentially, this means that any restriction must be clearly provided by law, and proven to be necessary and the least intrusive means available for the purpose of protecting the rights of others”

He also called upon Governments to develop a concrete and effective plan of action to make the Internet widely available, accessible and affordable to all segments of the population

A study conducted by University of Montreal suggests stress hormone cortisol plays a role in retrieving and reactivation of memory.

Researchers administered the drug metyrapone which lowers cortisol levels and studied the impact on memory.

They found memory is changeable.

Nazi movement was a war on oneself -- a society that reached such depths of despair that it needed to destroy itself to rebuild and in process blame target and attack individuals for whom leadership deemed cause of economic and social ills

Macro example of war psychology for which is relevant and studied to this day as it represents extremes of human hatred when confronted with societal obstacles for which it can't overcome

Realistically death was probably a welcome reprieve for victims of internment camps as conditions were not conducive to sustaining a will to live

We are witnessing growing pains of a country who's archaic parliamentary system isn't up to the challenges and expectations of a modern democracy

Protests were widespread and unprecedented not only G8/G20 but scattered protests previous winter during the parliamentary prorogation

House of Commons is not dysfunctional it is completely broken, where a party who only wins 1/3 popular vote runs the House and appoints Senate for which increasingly is stacked with political ideologues not those of sound judgement

Rather than a coalition we may need to proceed with proportional representation and abolish Senate with longer term view of forming an independent republic free of crown pomp and circumstance if we are to survive with our rights and freedoms intact
