A pet for sale- a friend, for life!

It would seem this definitely applies to 1st time dog owners, so I‘m going back to the first dog brought into my life- .
My parents took me to the local RSPCA, a vision never imagined, and one that impacted both myself, and my mother.
After forcing ourselves to choose only one, we settled on the cross kelpie/corgie, still a ‘pup’, this little bundle quickly opened our eyes to greater responsibilities, and far greater expenses!
After 12 years, and ‘one hip-replacement’ later, we were all faced with our first experience of grief, the day she passed away. Mum never really got over the loss, never to own another pet in her lifetime.
Years later, it was my son who wanted the ‘puppy’, and as we browsed the pet-shop windows, I took time-out to remind both hubby, and my boy, that no matter how cute or how cuddly, whether the dog was expensive or affordable, this step we were taking, meant accepting changes, at home.
Step-by-step, I went over all the ‘needs’ of a pet, the lessons in toilet-training and so on, ensuring my eight-year-old understood, this was by no means, a toy!
Some shop cages housed kittens, guinea pigs , but only a few puppies. The shoppers all were flocking to the gorgeous ‘white labs’ ,alternating between the huskies, and there on her own, the playful and frisky, 3 month old mocha brown, short-haired collie cross. Her legs much longer and somewhat awkward, compared to that of her competitors, yet this was the one which caught our eye.
The shop-owner had let the collie roam the store, and she was soon the centre of attention as she stumbled and barked about the aisles, playing with anyone who would give her their time. Out of nowhere, the funny little pup with the four white paws came bounded towards me, skidding until she landed right at my feet! I hadn’t laughed out-loud for sometime, you see, it had only been 4 weeks since I’d lost someone very close to me….my mother.
This was the dog meant for us, and we were meant for her.
When I had selected all the accessories, it was time to sign all paperwork and pay the cashier, “She needs a name” said the shop attendant, holding up a list of choices.
As I held her in my arms, I knew we were already a family…..”We’re calling her Sophie”. That was nine years ago, and as I type this, she sleeps with a full-belly, content and warm, still close to my feet.
