It's even for the worship team member who is deliberate in how they "don't show" your adoration for God. If you're frustrated with the lack of "worship & praise" expression in your church services, it's time to stop forcing a square peg in a round hole...and start sanding that square peg.

So how do you get your local church to respond in corporate worship? I can't say I know the answer to this question. Because quite frankly, it's something I'm currently praying about for each person in our church. However, I can say that I have identified some questions that are hopefully leading me to the result that God desires vs. what I desire:

Do I know the spiritual state of our church? Our church desire is to be a church of 1/3rds. That is a church attendance of 1/3 mature believers, 1/3 new believers, 1/3 seekers or unchurched. For me to assume that each person in our congregation should "get it" and display public affection and adoration the way I think they should does not match up with the vision of the church. As worship leaders (and team members I'm talking to you too), stop and think about the make up of your church. How many people in the room do you think are "witnesses" versus "participators"? If you can answer this, it might help you shift your disappointment into opportunity.

Am I teaching them to praise? I am an acoustic guitar playing worship leader. It's just how I do it. I'm most comfortable hidden behind that beautiful Breedlove constantly strumming without giving me a chance to raise my hands. What I've decided to do these past couple of months is to challenge myself to teach our church visibly how to worship the Lord. I (take a deep breathe) have led a few times without playing guitar. Stepping out of my comfort zone has allowed me to free myself to lead our church visually in expressing worship physically to the Lord. Raising hands, clapping and even moving more than 2 feet away from my boom stand that I'm weekly chained to with the acoustic guitar. My hope is that I'm setting a tone, knocking down barriers for people when I do this. Side note: I've also been able to allow other people in our church to take part in worship leading behind the guitar since doing this. So think of ways you can really teach people how to praise.

Do I and the Team "Get It"? Yes...that old saying, "When you point your finger accusing someone of something, there are three more fingers pointing right back at you". There have been times I've thought of the corporate worship service as time in front of the mirror. Think of it like this, you and your worship team are a mirror that your church is looking at. Are you reflecting the glory of Christ? If so, the church will see it. It doesn't mean they'll automatically respond in a way you hope through singing louder or raising hands, but it isn't so much about that "moment" as it is creating an opportunity for people to witness first hand the joy and peace a relationship with God can bring. If you simply reflect yourself in the "mirror", yeah...people aren't going to be impressed. Don't be surprised if you just become another "band" in their eyes.

Am I and the Team Leading Offstage? This is a big one. I've always believed in this principle. The worship leading doesn't stop when you step off the stage. In fact, I contend that it truly begins offstage. In every action, conversation, and interaction with people within the church, you are leading worship. People won't "buy it" if they just witnessed you being a jerk to an audio team member. They won't "buy it" if your guitarist, drummer, bassist, keyboardist or vocalist (covered them all so I won't be accused of signaling out anyone on our team...I love them all) aren't experiencing personal growth within their own local church. How can you lead people in worship if you aren't yourself living it?

These are just a few of the questions I've continually asked myself as our worship team journeys to pastor the hearts of our local church in the area of worship. We must never assume people know how to praise God when we gather corporately. You as a worship leader and team member have a great opportunity and responsibility to look for ways to connect people to Christ every week. Instead of getting frustrated with them...ask God to help you identify ways you can begin teaching your church how to praise the Lord.

16 Let the word of
Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one
another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in
your hearts to the Lord -Colossians 3:16 (NKJV)

<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogs/bHDL/~4/j3ptIrXfxEs" height="1" width="1" />

Check it out below:

Here is how the conversation typically goes:

Life-long Church Attendee: "Your church is pretty shallow. Felt like it was a show. I need something deeper."

Me:
"Really? That surprises me, cuz' I've been here for twenty years and
that's not my experience. How long have you been attending?"

Life-long Church Attendee: "I've been to three weekend services."

Me: "Then you haven't experienced our church yet. You've just scratched the surface."

For
some reason, people who have attended church for many years will come
to a weekend service and believe they have visited our church. I tell
people all the time: The weekend is not the church. It is a crowd. We are doing everything we can to draw the biggest crowd we can--and then turn it into a church. Read the rest...

<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogs/bHDL/~4/_hlA1zyStfI" height="1" width="1" />

“In this Webinar, I want to passionately remind worship leaders,
pastors and worshipers in general why we gather on a Sunday and what
happens when we express worship to God. Every week we come together and
sing songs, but if we don’t understand the importance of it and the
power of God that is in it, the worship in our churches will only tend
to shrink. I believe if we will take a step back and let God’s word
show us what we are to do, we will all be able to lead with a kind of
passion and boldness that we never had before!” -Tommy

We just didn't have anyone in our lives helping us connect the dots.

So while the Chiefs fell to the Chargers with an embarrassing score (I won't even mention here), I am grateful for the time (thanks James for the ticket). Here's my thought from yesterday: The work of helping people see the need for Christ is never through. I think skipping church every once in a while for full time ministry people should be a requirement. Spend time outside the four walls of your local church.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogs/bHDL/~4/BOGYyvaPHhE" height="1" width="1" />

If you see Mindy this week...be sure to tell her she's SUPER COOL!!!!!
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogs/bHDL/~4/a-hl780RknY" height="1" width="1" />

Adrian Franks. No..he was not a curveball...but man...he sure hit them. Adrian mans the video helm and on Friday we made a call to add a few videos to the services. First service had some whacky issues with the video clips we played...leaving Pastor Brian (our missions pastor) onstage hanging. When systems fail, you have a few options laid before you. You can freak out (yelling, getting angry and making every volunteer feel like quitting), abandon ship (after all, you're a volunteer and you don't really need this anyway), or you can roll with it teaching your team how to be flexible and adaptable to crazy situations. So my hats are off to both Adrian and Brian for rolling with it. Nicely done fellas...nicely done.

Third Service Glitch. Between second and third service, Sr. Pastor Tim Howey was praying with a family in desperate need of encouragement. As we wrapped up the last song at the beginning of the service, I felt a hand on my back while I prayed. I looked up to see no Tim standing next to me ready to teach. Thankfully, Pastor Brian Gann jumped up and spoke about our current missions project. Excellent flexibility! Problem for us was that part of the service was planned during our offertory...which meant we didn't have a song at the end of service. Preston and I ran to my office and put together a quick tune while Tim taught. Way to go Preston!

No guitar. I led the entire morning without a guitar. I was concerned I would have "Ricky Bobby Hands"...I think it went all right (see below video). My goal was to do a few things. Provide an opportunity for someone else to utilize their talent/gift behind the acoustic guitar, and also experiment with leading people freely without having my hands occupied. I was able to freely lead people visually, raising hands etc...and it seemed to work! Look for this more often!

He is a part of the team of men who support the church by visiting people hospitalized, caring for people, praying for people among MANY other things. It's truly people like Michael and his wife Monica that make ministering at Grace a true joy and blessing. He is a true example of what it means to be a worship leader at Grace...even off the stage.

If you see Michael Hildebrand this week...be sure to tell him he's SUPER COOL! And if you're a Twitter person, go ahead and tell him there today...his id is @sonofray.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogs/bHDL/~4/8eQi2yIAyLs" height="1" width="1" />

Tami Dozier is an integral part of making the worship services happen at Grace. Tami volunteers on the Stage Team during the weekends. If you go backstage, you'll see her keeping the Praise Team in line, helping coordinate stage elements, meeting the needs of the speakers and musicians, keeping the service elements in time....all with a smile and positive attitude. Tami is a joy to have on the Grace Weekend Service Team and is a prime example of what it means to lead worship...even from behind the stage curtain. Thank you Tami for being such a wonderful servant of Christ on the Grace Stage Team!
Hey Gracers!
