Garmin Granted FAA’s STC for GTS Series, TAS and TCAS I Traffic Systems

OLATHE, Kan./December 9, 2009/ Business Wire — Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted an approved model list supplemental type certificate (AML-STC) for the Garmin’s TAS and TCAS I traffic systems, the GTS 800, GTS 820 and GTS 850. The initial AML-STC includes approximately 580 different aircraft makes and models and Garmin expects to add additional aircraft to the AML-STC in 2010. This announcement follows the technical standards order (TSO) authorization that Garmin received in November.

The GTS 800 traffic series combines active and passive surveillance data to pinpoint specific traffic threats. The systems use Garmin’s patent-pending CLEAR CAS™ technology and correlates automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) with radar targets to provide pilots with the most accurate picture of the sky.

“The GTS traffic series is one of several aviation products designed to be compatible with the NextGen system. It can track up to 60 targets at a time, identify the flight path of specific aircraft, and give spoken audio alerts in an ATC-like format so that pilots are able to react immediately to their surrounding traffic situation,” said Gary Kelley, Garmin’s vice president of marketing.

There are three distinct system configurations for the GTS series, and each model creates a 360-degree zone of detection around the aircraft so that pilots can see and identify targets in their airspace that may pose a collision hazard. The GTS 800 TAS is a lower-cost system offering 40 watts of transmit power and a range of up to 12 nautical miles. The GTS 820 TAS delivers 250 watts of transmit power and up to 40 nautical miles of interrogation range. The GTS 850 TCAS I satisfies all TCAS I collision avoidance criteria for higher-capability turboprops and jets. It features the same 250 watt performance as the GTS 820, and also meets the FAA’s TCAS I certification criteria. The GTS 820 and GTS 850 are installed in conjunction with a Garmin Mode S transponder.

All GTS series products include Garmin’s new CLEAR CAS (Correlated Location Enhanced ADS-B Receiver Collision Avoidance System) technology, a hybrid system that provides real-time information that is totally independent of radar-based air traffic control. CLEAR CAS combines active and passive surveillance data, including 1090 MHz Extended Squitter ADS-B data (ADS-B Out required). The system provides enhanced information that allows select displays to be updated to show flight ID, altitude, velocity, and direction of target aircraft.

Traffic information from the GTS series is displayed on the map page or traffic page of Garmin’s panel mount aviation products and integrated display systems using TAS/TCAS symbology. Additional traffic symbology can be displayed on Garmin’s synthetic vision technology (SVT) equipped PFDs. When the GTS product receives replies to its interrogations, it computes the responding aircraft’s range, bearing, relative altitude, and closure rate. Then, it enhances location data with data received from ADS-B Out equipped targets, plots the traffic location, predicts collision threats, and depicts the information on the traffic display. The system also includes expanded audio traffic alerts in an ATC-like format. For example, “Traffic; Eleven o’clock; High; Less than one mile.”

The GTS series also offers flexible antenna configurations that ensure optimum system performance for specific types of aircraft. Customers with fixed gear airplanes and rotorcraft may choose a single directional quadrapole antenna on top of the aircraft, with or without a bottom mounted omnidirectional antenna. For optimal performance on retractable gear aircraft, customers may select a top-and-bottom dual directional antenna configuration.

The GTS 800, 820 and 850 are available immediately for an expected list price starting at $9,995, $19,995, and $24,995, respectively.

These new chartplotters also feature an unmatched low-level backlight display that dims to 0.5 nits, and a backlit keypad for use in low-light conditions without compromising vision.

Garmin® Expands eLearning Program for Aviation Products

This is the first time Garmin has offered online training. Starting in late-November, customers can access online training for the GPSMAP® 396, 496, 695/696, G1000® for VFR flight conditions, and G1000 for IFR flight conditions from any computer that has internet access. Unlike a CD-ROM that may become out-of-date, the online system will be periodically updated with the most recent software version available.

Garmin’s eLearning Programs are highly interactive, computer-based training programs that leverage the latest technology to help customers take advantage of the features of their Garmin aviation products. Customers will be able to view multi-media content, practice procedures on simulated devices, track progress, and generate reports and completion certificates for their enrolled courses. If used at a flight school or flight department, training managers will be able to monitor the performance of any learner affiliated with their school or flight department. The embedded messaging system allows learners and training managers to easily collaborate within the learning environment. The scalable nature of the system also allows for future expansion with a wide range of Garmin aviation products.

When a customer logs in to the online eLearning, they will be able to choose a topic of interest and watch a simulated multi-media demonstration of the task, such as creating a flight plan. Then, for key topics, a scenario-based, guided simulation system will help the user practice the task by following step-by-step, on-screen prompts. Lastly, the user can practice what they learned without the help prompts, to reinforce and assess their skills. The program offers remediation and also tracks the user’s progress throughout the courseware.

Garmin continues to team with Pegasus Interactive, Inc. to provide customers with cutting-edge software solutions. Pegasus Interactive has developed the industry-leading, enterprise rich internet application on the Adobe Flash platform, ensuring that training management content will available on over 98 percent of internet-enabled computers, and potential future access on mobile devices.

The aera series includes four different models – aera 500, aera 510, aera 550 and aera 560 – and all have unprecedented ease of use that is derived from Garmin’s 20 years of expertise in the aviation and automotive markets. The aera product line will be on display and available for purchase for the first time at the Aircraft Owners Pilot Association (AOPA) Summit in Tampa, Florida, November 5-7, 2009.

The aera series has a 4.3 inch QVGA sunlight readable touchscreen display with large, finger-touchable icons. When in aviation mode, pilots are greeted with colorful icons that use intuitive pictures and labels to indicate their function: map, weather, terrain, direct to, HSI/panel, active FPL, numbers, nearest, WPT info, position, XM radio, and tools. Pilots can choose any of these functions by simply touching the appropriate icon. For example, after touching the terrain icon, pilots will see terrain and obstacle data that vividly depicts potential hazards.

The exterior of the aera 500, 510, 550 and 560 are identical, but the software features of each model are tailored to those seeking an entry or mid-level aviation handheld.

The G3000 is designed specifically for Part 23 turbine aircraft, and was announced at the National Business Aviation Association Convention.

Intuitive, icon-driven interface
The G3000 incorporates the all new GTC 570 vehicle management system, a 5.7-inch diagonal touchscreen controller that uses a desktop-like menu interface with intuitive icons. The console-mounted GTC 570 allows for full control for radio management, audio management, flight management, weather systems management, synoptics, and other vehicle systems.

The simplistic user interface leverages the experience Garmin has gained by designing and delivering millions of automotive consumer products, and it eliminates buttons, switches, and extraneous knobs. The touchscreen also enhances ease of use through common sense functions like “back” and “home” that let pilots quickly retrace their steps or return to the home screen. The GTC 570 vehicle management system also uses patent pending, infrared touchscreen technology, audio and visual feedback, and animation to help pilots know exactly how the system is responding to their input.

“We’ve gone to great lengths to make the G3000 simple to operate,” said Kelley. “For example, with the GTC 570, pilots touch the information they want to change rather than using a cursor. The GTC 570 also incorporates three conventional knobs at the bottom of the display: a volume control knob, dedicated map joystick and dual concentric knob for data entry. Pilots may choose to use the knobs instead of the touchscreen to enter information and the knobs’ functions are always labeled on the display.

Extra-wide, split-screen displays
The primary flight displays (PFD) and multi-function display (MFD) are 14.1-inch diagonal WXGA high resolution wide aspect ratio displays. The large landscape oriented displays make it possible to have an enhanced view of Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT™) that displays three dimensional terrain, obstacles, pathways, and traffic. Situational awareness is enhanced further with a large inset map, and an extended horizon line.

The G3000’s large MFD also has split-screen capability so that two separate vertical pages may be viewed side-by-side. Pilots may simultaneously view maps, charts, TAWS, flight planning, weather or video input pages. In addition, aircraft synoptics can be graphically depicted on the MFD to help simplify monitoring and speed troubleshooting.

As with the G1000®, the G3000 has full reversionary capabilities, including in-flight dynamic restarts, so that all flight critical data can be transferred seamlessly to a single display for added safety during flight.

The G3000 also includes a fully capable three-axis, fully digital, dual channel, fail passive auto flight system. The autopilot includes features you would expect in this class of aircraft such as coupled wide area augmentation system (WAAS) approaches, vertical navigation, and flight level change (FLC).

Added perspective
On the G3000’s widescreens, Garmin’s SVT presents near life-like 3D depictions of terrain, obstacles, traffic and the runway environment so that the image on the display replicates what pilots would see outside the cockpit on a clear day. SVT works seamlessly to alert pilots of potential ground hazards by displaying terrain and obstacles which pose a threat to the aircraft with appropriate TAWS alert coloring, as well as voice alerts. SVT also includes pathways (or Highway-In-The-Sky) that are depicted as 3D “flying rectangles” and help pilots stay on course when flying en route legs, VNAV legs, GPS/WAAS vertical approach procedures, ILS approach procedures, and arrival and departure procedures.

The G3000 avionics suite also integrates synoptics (graphical systems displays), Garmin’s SafeTaxi®, FliteCharts® and ChartView (optional), which simplify operation, enhance situational awareness, and increase safety during flight and when taxiing. Garmin SafeTaxi includes over 950 U.S. airports and helps pilots navigate unfamiliar airports while taxiing by identifying runways, taxiways, runway incursion hotspots, and hangars, as well as the aircraft’s exact location on the field. FliteCharts is an electronic version of the AeroNav Charts (formerly known as the NACO U.S. Terminal Procedures Publication) and lets pilots quickly find and view all Departure Procedures (DP), Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs), approach charts, and airport diagrams on the MFD. Garmin® Announces G1000® Retrofit Program for Cessna CitationJet

(NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today that it is in the midst of a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) program that will allow installation of Garmin’s G1000 integrated flightdeck on the Cessna CitationJet (Model 525, serial numbers 0001-0359). Once completed, the STC will pave the way for CitationJet owners to visit a Cessna Owned Citation Service Centers for installation of the Garmin G1000 avionics suite.

The G1000 installation on the CitationJet has a large 12-inch multi-function display (MFD) and two 10.4-inch primary flight displays (PFD). It also includes Garmin’s GFC 700 three-axis, fully digital, dual channel, fail passive automatic flight control system (AFCS). The GFC 700 includes features you would expect in this class of aircraft such as coupled wide area augmentation system (WAAS) approaches, vertical navigation, and flight level change (FLC).

Also available to CitationJet operators is Garmin’s synthetic vision technology (SVT™) that presents a 3D depiction of terrain, obstacles, traffic and the runway environment on the G1000’s PFD so that the image replicates what pilots would see outside the cockpit on a clear day. In addition, Garmin’s GDL 69A™ is standard equipment that brings integrated satellite weather datalink and digital-quality audio via XM WX Satellite Weather™ (service available to U.S. and Canadian customers with a XM subscription).

Garmin’s SafeTaxi and FliteCharts™ are also available as standard and will ease pilot workload. Garmin SafeTaxi includes over 950 U.S. airports and helps pilots navigate unfamiliar airports while taxiing by identifying runways, taxiways, runway incursion hotspots, and hangars, as well as the aircraft’s exact location on the field. FliteCharts is an electronic version of the Departure Procedures, Standard Terminal Arrival Routes, approach charts and airport diagrams, and may be viewed directly on the MFD. ChartView is available as an option and it allows pilots to overlay the aircraft’s position on an electronic version of Jeppesen’s charts and airport diagrams.

Thanks to the G1000’s lightweight and modular design, the G1000 installation results in a weight savings of approximately 100 pounds.

Cessna’s CitationJet is an entry level business jet that was first announced at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention in 1989. Its first flight was completed in 1991, and first delivery was in 1993.

Garmin anticipates receiving the STC for the Cessna CitationJet in early second quarter of 2010. All installations will be performed by Cessna-owned Citation Service Centers, and CitationJet owners and operators should contact a Cessna Citation Service Center for pricing and scheduling an installation.
