Lavender Lane was birthed out of a close friendship between two crazy shopaholics, Tiffany and Valerie, who love to hang out and talk about everything under the sun.

Their belief is that fashion is not about chasing trends, but helping every lady create a personal style that makes them look good and feel confident.

1. Is this the first time that you start your own online business?

Yes.

2. How long have you been in this industry?

We have just turned two.

3. What was the reason for you to start this business?

Tiffany, my partner at Lavender Lane, and I have always had a common passion for fashion and would talk extensively about our latest purchases and trends. We have an eye for vintage and unique stuff but found the things offered in most blogshops either too common and not unique enough. We decided to set up Lavender Lane, which aims to offer unique vintage-inspired stuff, which hopefully will inject a fresh breath to the online fashion scene here in Singapore and beyond!

4. What future plans do you have for this business?

We, being vintage lovers, have recently launched our third vintage collection. Our vintage pieces are specially handpicked and sourced from overseas suppliers. We have received good response from our launches thus far and will be continuing to bring in good quality quirky vintage pieces without burning holes in people’s pockets.

At the same time, we are working hard on our modern chic collection, and are constantly on the lookout for unique pieces not found on other blogshops. We source for stock not only locally, but from Hongkong, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Bangkok. We aim to provide overseas shipping in time to come as we have received requests from Indonesia, Malaysia etc.

5. What is the business current situation?

We have been blessed with very supportive and faithful customers thus far and have experienced some breakthroughs recently, which have spurred us on to continue at what we are doing. We have also just launched our 25th Collection.

6. What are the difficulties faced?

Getting people to know about us and stay with us for launches. The reason is because the market is just so saturated with thousands of blogshops, both local and overseas, and customers are totally spoilt for choice! Hence the need to create a sense of awareness is crucial.

In addition, Tiffany and our models have full time jobs, hence it can be challenging to find time to manage the business, from sourcing of goods, organizing photoshoots, photo editing, updating and maintaining the website as well as responding to enquiries, which require a considerable amount of time. There were many late nights spent to complete and launch a collection, which is worth all the effort as this is what we truly enjoy!

7. What other benefits do you have by starting this online business besides money?

Fulfilling our passion in exploring the different facets of fashion and bringing our customers nothing but the best in the market.

8. What do you have to sacrifice in order to continue with this business?

Valerie quit her previous job in order to fully focus on Lavender Lane, to devote more time to this business and think of ways to help bring the business to a higher level. And not to mention, the compromise on our sleep and social life due to the many hours and efforts put in, since we strive to deliver absolute quality in each and every collection.

9. Where do you seek for customers?

Through social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and our very own blog.

10. What exactly makes your online business stand out from the rest?

We aim at providing the best personalized customer service, in terms of our speed at responding to enquiries and orders. We try to continually surprise our customers with personal notes with discount codes, skincare and make up samples in every package to let them know that we truly appreciate and value them.

11. What are the most memorable events or lessons learnt from starting this online business?

Learning to work together is a very different ball game from hanging out as good friends. The dynamics are so different and we are constantly learning to adapt to each other’s working style and communicate in a way that is constructive and beneficial to the business, whilst keeping our friendship intact.

We are constantly tackling the different obstacles of doing business, encouraging each other to overcome each hurdle that comes and brainstorming on ways to better serve our customers.

12. Do you think starting this online business has impacted your life?

Definitely. We love interacting with people from all ages and life stations, and receiving invaluable feedback from them from which we have benefited much. Setting up a business is no easy feat and it has helped us horn our skills at prioritizing, time management and being more driven in pursuing our passion in the process.

We are really honored to know more about the story behind this new venture by two individuals who graduated with a Bachelor of Design in fashion from Raffles College of Higher Education.

Exclusive Interview

1. Is this the first time that you start your own online business?

Yes. It is our first time starting a business and Elska has only been around since 3rd December 2012. We are excited to see what is in store for us in the near future.

2. How long have you been in this industry?

One of us has experience in shoe design for about a year. However, this is not enough to say that we have been in this industry for long. We have both just started out on this new venture and have much to learn. It has not been long since we both graduated as well.

3. What was the reason for you to start this business?

Our common love of luxe footwear. Our designs are highly inspired by high street fashionwear and we would like to translate this through our merchandise and to allow our consumers to be spoilt for choice! As online shoppers ourselves, we understand the main concerns of the consumers and wish to bring them an exclusive and special shopping experience with us. With our detailed packaging, we hope to add that intimate touch to the whole shopping experience by presenting customers with a ‘gift’ from us instead of just a regular purchase.

4. What future plans do you have for this business?

It is hard to say what will happen in the future. However, we would like to gain a strong foothold in the online retail industry in the near future and be established as a brand that our consumers can relate to. We hope to learn from our experiences now and constantly improve in different aspects of our business, to better ourselves and excel in quality and service to our consumers.

5. What is the business current situation?

We are starting to gain awareness and have a steadily increasing fanbase which we are very happy about. We have recently ended our first shoes giveaway contest and the response was really good and we appreciate all the support from all the people who have shown interest in us. We are currently collaborating with Fullhouse Theme Café Singapore to have a co promotion that will go on from now till the end of February where Fullhouse and Elska’s customers can enjoy exclusive deals from both brands.

6. What are the difficulties faced?

Consumers usually require a longer time to decide if they should purchase a particular pair of shoes. The main concern of buying a pair of shoes online is finding your perfect fit. Therefore as an online e-tailer for shoes, we try our best to overcome this situation and have come up with several ways to do so. Currently we have an on-going February promotion “Elska at your Door” where customers who have purchased with us get to receive 3 sizes upon delivery. This is to offer our customer the option to choose from the 3 sizes that we will bring to them, allowing them to choose their best fit. So far the response of this special service has been well received and we might consider letting this to go on for a longer period of time. Also, we have a shoe size guide that has been made by us especially for our customers. Our shoe size guide is straightforward and easy to use where one can place their foot on the guide and know which size they are immediately by looking at the size markings stated on the guide.

7. What other benefits do you have by starting this online business besides money?

We are allowed to express ourselves freely. This brand acts as a medium for us to translate all our ideas and creativity to our merchandise. We are also able to oversee the entire process of our products making and are able to visualize and realize the ideal branding of Elska.

8. What do you have to sacrifice in order to continue with this business?

Sleep and time for other social activities. Our time for sleep and other social activities have been kept to the bare minimum these days, as our focus is definitely on the brand at the moment since we are a new start-up.

9. What was the main thing that motivates you to continue with this business despite the unfavourable conditions such as stiff competition?

Customer satisfaction. We get driven and motivated by customers who have shopped with us and appreciated our products and services. These valuable comments from customers to us are something that we greatly appreciate and keep us going.

10. Where do you seek for customers?

As most people today are highly versed in the digital world, we market heavily on social media platforms such as Facebook, twitter and also by word of mouth. Social media is something that is growing where almost everyone today relies on such platforms to get information they are looking for therefore; we target our customers mostly through online and social media marketing.

11. How do you boost your popularity online?

By differentiating ourselves from the rest of the competition out there. We want people to know us a brand and hope that our brand will speak for itself and have an identity that people can relate to. We hold exciting contests occasionally to engage our customers to interact with us. Also, we offer personalized items during a special occasion/holiday season (eg. handmade leather cardholders) with purchases so as to make the whole consumer shopping experience with Elska much more intimate.

12. What exactly makes your online business stand out from the rest?

We promise an intuitive shopping experience and delicate quality in our products and oversees the entire process of its making, from the production right down to the end consumer.

Elska embodies the spirit of the fashion forward urban woman. Each design is effortless, chic and edge-perfect for the fearless fashionista.

13. What are the most memorable events or lessons learnt from starting this online business?

Meeting of people from different walks of life, from our potential sponsors or collaboration partners right down to our customers. Our customers especially, we get customers from various age groups and backgrounds and via our on site chatting system, we get to interact with consumers and other than letting them know more about us, we also get valuable feedbacks from them and in turn get to know our consumers better. It is also great to listen to people giving suggestions about our brand and the different views and thoughts that we ourselves may have never thought of.

14. Do you think starting this online business has impacted your life?

Yes definitely. Starting up a business requires a lot of thought and planning and it is not as easy as it seems. Especially in the beginning, we have to be prepared to sacrifice certain things to be able to get as much things done as possible. Also, learning to be quick on our feet by making swift and accurate decisions during critical time is also something that we have gained out of this. Most importantly, self-discipline is key. Starting up a business allows you to be flexible in term of working hours; therefore, self-discipline is definitely something that one needs to be able to get work done.

Here are some great news to share! Recently, Elska has collaborated with Fullhouse Café Singapore for a special co-promotion. Elska’s customers will receive special meal discounts when they visit Fullhouse, and their customers get to enjoy exclusive discounts when they shop with them as well. This promotion will end during the last week of February.

There is also an ongoing Valentine’s special Lucky Draw, which a pair of Elska’s shoes will be given to customers who dine at Fullhouse. Each couple that dines at Fullhouse will get a chance to join a Lucky Draw and 2 winners will be picked at the end of each week. There will be 10 winners in total.
