We made a few changes to our Nova Extreme series of light fixtures and started to ship the 2 lamp models to dealers last week. The two noticeable changes:

We've finally launched the much anticipated Cardiff Aquariums. They will be available with black finished stands to start, followed by Espresso (couple weeks) then Cherry. They feature the same filter system we use in the Solana with a few "added improvements." We've reinforced the auto top-off tray as well as the drip tray, and included a new ABS top for the filter.

Smart Reef^TM BAC (Bituminous Activated Carbon) is a pure 8x30 mesh non-acid washed carbon and will not leach phosphates into your water. Smart Reef^TM BAC is made from virgin bituminous activated carbon and is made from the highest select grade of virgin bituminous coal and is specifically designed to be used in the aquarium.
Smart Reef^TM BAC is simply the best value dollar for dollar for use in your aquarium. Our carbon is a virgin activated carbon. This stuff is rated for drinking water use and food grade use. WASHINGTON - America's oldest aquarium has a new look, and you might not know it's in an unlikely place in downtown D.C.
The National Aquarium is inside the the U.S. Department of Commerce building on 14th Street between Pennsylvania and Constitution avenues in Northwest.
The aquarium is "at the very end stage" of a makeover, with new paint and carpet and impressive new displays, thanks to a partnership with the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
"We have a feeding demonstration every day at 2 p.m., and our alligators get fed once a week on Fridays. And I have to say, it's a must-see," Executive Director Bob Ramin says.

EcoTech Marine, the company that revolutionized coral aquarium propeller pumps with the VorTech MP40w, unveiled a series of innovative enhancements and new features to their award-winning VorTech pumps today at InterZoo, the world’s leading exhibition for the pet industry. The next generation VorTech provides users with even greater flexibility, safety, durability and performance.

The MP40w Gen2 features a new magnet, high performance plastic drive shaft screw, and revised wet frame cover. The new magnet is fully encapsulated within black plastic, cannot be scratched or damaged under normal use, is more durable, eliminates rusting and requires no regularly scheduled replacements.

New features for the MP40w Gen 2 include:

A new Long Pulse Mode allows for wave pulse timings of between 2 and 60 seconds, enabling the creation of slow alternating flow throughout the tank.
A new Night Mode enables the pump to operate for 14 hours in whichever mode is selected for the day and go back to Night Mode for 10 hours. Master pumps will tell their slaves to go into Night Mode as well.
Pump Disconnect feature that automatically shuts down the pump if the dry and wet sides become separated.

Enhancements to existing modes include:

Feed Mode has been slowed from 1000gph to 500gph to make it easier than ever to spot feed corals and slow moving fish with the push of a button.
A modified range of adjustment for Short Pulse Mode makes it easier to fine tune wave form.
A novel save function for Pulse Mode enables users to save their wave settings, providing an even higher level of customization.
A more sporadic Reef Crest Mode for both single pump systems and multi pump systems enables more pronounced speed changes constantly throughout the day.
A more sporadic Lagoon Mode for both single pump systems and multi pump systems provides enhanced variability to better simulate a lagoon environment.

In addition, the Generation 2 is backwards compatible with all VorTech pumps. “We are always working to upgrade and improve upon our products and we will continue to do so,” Marks said from Nürnberg. “As we have done in the past, we strive to make all upgrades backwards compatible at nominal costs so that our customers are able to have the latest and greatest EcoTech products in their aquariums.”

Existing drivers can be upgraded to Gen2 through a simple code re-flash. Because of the programmability of the driver, once a driver is upgraded to Gen2, that driver can upgrade other Wireless Wave Drivers. The code upgrade itself is free though depending on the way a customer chooses to upgrade, shipping fees may apply. Customers can:

Mail in their existing VorTech Wireless Wave Driver to EcoTech, along with their address and credit card information. Upon receipt, EcoTech will load the Gen2 code onto the driver and ship it back. The credit card will only be billed for the actual shipping rates. If new magnets are purchased at the same time, both driver and magnets will be shipped back together, helping customers reduce shipping cost.
Take their driver to an EcoTech Marine dealer that has a Gen2 demo and upgrade at their location. If they do not already have a demo model available with the new code to perform the upgrade, the dealer can contact EcoTech Marine directly.

Winter the dolphin gets bionic tail - Telegraph

Only closer inspection reveals the dolphin's rear end is entirely prosthetic.
Winter, an Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin, lost her own tail after being caught in a harsh crab trap.
She was found at just two-months old in 2006, floating in distress off the coast of Florida.

NORWALK, Conn., May 8 (UPI) -- An attorney for Norwalk, Conn., says a mother's suit against the city for her toddler's shoes being ruined by dog poo is among the most frivolous he's seen.
City Attorney M. Jeffry Spahr said Kelly DeBrocky of Mahopac, N.Y., filed suit against the city April 7, seeking $100 compensation for her child's ruined shoes and tickets for Maritime Aquarium -- which the mother said her family had to leave early because of the incident -- The (Stamford, Conn.) Advocate reported Thursday.
"I had to read it twice," Spahr said. "Immediately, what I did was say, 'You're not going to believe this one.' It was hilarious. What are these people thinking about? Just when you think you've heard it all."
DeBrocky defended he suit.
"I was just really skeeved, I thought the whole thing was disgusting," she said. "We had to pay for admission to the aquarium and my son had no shoes and it made the entire experience awful."
"The official response is her claim is denied and poop happens," said Spahr.

For most people, the idea of concrete blocks replacing coral reefs might seem far-fetched. But for a group of marine scientists at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, it is just what the doctor ordered. Sturdy enough to last, yet porous enough to be implanted with corals, concrete is the basis for an innovative technique that may help save coral reefs in the Red Sea from further destruction from overzealous divers.

According to leading experts, more than 25 percent of the world's coral reefs have already been destroyed. The causes are varied, and they include pollution, global warming and irresponsible fishing, but another large factor is uncontrolled and careless tourism. And perhaps more alarming is the fact that although coral bleaching (the most obvious sign of sick and dying coral) has been happening since at least the turn of the last century, most of the dramatic damage has occurred over the last 20 years.
The Red Sea has a reputation for being one of the most spectacular places to dive, and Eilat attracts thousands of vacationers a year, most of whom come to dive and snorkel in the coral reefs. But the very attraction they come to enjoy is suffering from the intensive tourism, and more and more of it is disappearing every year.

ver the past decades there have been many stories in the media about the plight of the Great Barrier Reef.
In the '60s and '70s we all heard that the Great Barrier Reef was about to be consumed by that voracious predator, the Crown of Thorns Starfish.
In the '80s and '90s, the principal threats turned out to be sediment runoff, to nutrients, over fishing and general habitat destruction.
For me, an ancient marine scientist who has spent thousands of hours diving on the Great Barrier Reef these past 40 years, each of these threats has been of concern. But nothing comes close to the devastation waiting in the wings at the moment.
Very likely you have a feeling that dire predictions about anything almost always turn out to be exaggerations. This view is understandable. Once I also would have thought it ridiculous to imagine that the Great Barrier Reef might have a limited future as a consequence of human activity. It would have seemed preposterous that the greatest coral reef on Earth, the biggest structure made by life on Earth, could be mortally threatened by any present or foreseeable change.
