Intermap Technologies yesterday announced the completion of a comprehensive dataset of 3D Roads of Western Europe.

Intermap claims to have “the only dataset to provide highly accurate 3D models for every road, from the largest highway to the smallest urban and rural roads, throughout Western Europe.“

Intermap’s 3D Roads feature more than 6 million kilometers of all classes of roads in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, United Kingdom, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ireland, and Portugal.

New applications derived from Intermap’s 3D Roads can help enhance a vehicle’s efficiency, utility, and safety. For example, energy management applications can help save fuel and reduce harmful emissions by finding the most fuel-efficient route, accurately predicting an electric vehicle’s range, or predicatively shifting gears in trucks. Also, road slope and curvature can be sensed in advance with vehicle safety systems such as predictive front lighting which optimally directs front headlights in anticipation of upcoming bends and hills in the road ahead.

The dataset was produced by flying aircraft equipped with Intermap radar technology to extract a spatially correct 2D road network, and fusing this with height information from Intermap’s NEXTMap database of digital elevation models (DEMs).

At the corporate level the publicly listed Intermap had a tough year 2010 as shown by the financial earnings published last week. In 2010 the company reported total revenue of $13.9 million, a 54% decrease from $30.3 million in 2009 and a loss of $19.5 million.

Since the beginning of 2010 the company has reduced its workforce by 60 percent. The market capitalization of the company is now $27 million.

Audi yesterday announced that T-Mobile USA, Inc. (soon AT&T) will serve as the U.S. wireless carrier for its Audi Connect systems in its upcoming luxury car lines.

The Audi Connect services include voice-activated Google Earth, Google Local Search, and Sirius Traffic information (powered by NAVTEQ) combined with Google Earth imagery. The 3D terrain and topology of Google Earth is combined with Sirius Traffic data on Audi’s navigational map information (MMI Navigation Plus).

In addition, Audi Connect allows users to obtain real-time news, weather, and fuel prices. Audi Connect is also able to turn the vehicle into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

It looks like Aircel, which used an Unlimited Pocket Internet plan for Rs.98 before, has just followed other carriers by capping the data usage.

For Rs.98 per month (30 days), your data usage is no longer Unlimited but limited to 3GB.

But, there’s still an Unlimited Plan,for a higher price (or lesser, as you see it), at Rs.251 with a validity of 90 days. So if you are a regular user of Aircel pocket internet, Rs.251 for 90 days is clearly better Rs.98 for 30 days; it’s just that you are paying 2 months advance.

In Rs.251 plan, apart from getting Unlimited 2G Data for 90 days, you will also be eligible for 150 local Aircel to Aircel minutes,valid for 90 days; not a bad deal at all.

The above two plans (Rs.98 and Rs.251) are applicable for both prepaid and post paid subscribers.
For Prepaid subscribers, the small PI packs such as Rs.29 for 750 MB with 7 days validity, Rs.14 for 250MB with 5 days validity still exist.Without any of these plans, the default GPRS browsing rate remains at 10p/10KB To get settings for Pocket Internet, send an SMS as PI to 121.

IBM claims world's fastest processor with 5.2GHz z196

Remember when a 1.4GHz processor was deemed the world's fastest? Man, that was ages ago. Recently, IBM has laid claim to that very record, with its 5.2GHz z196 processor being the focal point. Of course, we've seen a number of consumer chips hum along at speeds well beyond that (thanks to sophisticated cooling systems, of course), but this here enterprise chip does it without any liquid nitrogen-based assistance. It's a four-core slab that was manufactured using the outfit's 45 nanometer technology, boasting 1.4 billion transistors and the ability to handle more than 50 billion instructions per second.

Interestingly, Fujitsu's Venus CPU is said to handle a staggering 128 billion calculations per second, so we're guessing that IBM won't be snagging this crown without any debate from the competition. At any rate, there's a very convincing video waiting for you after the break, and no, you won't find this thing in your next Alienware anytime soon.

In one of the recent activities, Google has silently launched an attractive new feature, Blog Finder, thus adding another attribute to its series of functionalities. This new feature will search for blogs across the entire web for any given topic that interests the users.

The news about the launch came up as a mere announcement in the form of a weekly search update review that was released sometime back. The new feature has great potential of being used widely for its usability. After all, nearly every surfer on the web seeks for a list of the best blogs, related to their interests.
How do you use the Blog Search feature?

For a long time, Google has been displaying a minor number of blogs, all related to the query searched by the user just above the other page results. However with this new search system, the blog search has now been parted and included as an individual service that can be availed to in the left sidebar of the search engine’s search result page.

Click Google.com and search for any interesting topic in the search tab. Once the result page is displayed, check the left sidebar for the “Blogs” links to find a list of the best blogs related to your search query. In case the “Blogs” link does not appear on the left sidebar, click on the “more” section and then enter the “blogs” section.

Is the Search Result Worthy?

Finding related search results that provide you the best information about your query is the ideal need of all webmasters and regular users. Hence, considering the list of blogs obtained in the blog search, the feature seems to have proved its usability to all web users. However, the ranking of these blogs in the search result page is a very questionable topic. The search feature offers results in a particular order. It shows results higher on the search result page if your query dominantly matches the title of the blog. This is however not a very good logic of indicating the best blogs to the users, as the content of the blog is not at all analyzed before the blogs are ranked. What's the Next Operating System After Windows 7?

Windows 7 is barely out and people are reporting great results with the operating system? But what comes next? Will Windows 7 be the last operating system from Microsoft for a few years or will consumers and businesses a next generation operating system to meet the needs and wants of both industry and consumer? The answer to that question will be up in the air for a while but meantime there are many things I would like to see added to Windows 8 when the operating system comes out.

I liked all the eye-candy that was included with Microsoft Vista but the 32- bit version was so unstable that I could not keep it up and running for more than three months without having to reinstall the operating system. After I upgraded to the 64-bit version all those instabilities went away but I still had to add quite a few visual styling programs to create the look and feel I wanted in an OS that was perfect for me.

The major thing I would like to see in the next operating system after Microsoft Windows 7 would be enhanced graphics and customization capabilities. I'd like to see Active Desktop brought back and made secure. I have missed Active Desktop since it was discontinued with 64-bit XP and Vista's widget sidebar which they claim made up for the loss of Active Desktop is no

comparison. I used Active Desktop to place animated graphics on my desktop as links to my favorite webpages and would have used it to add animated icons if the ability had been there.

Another thing I would like to see in the next operating system beyond Windows 7 is program launching from your browser & program launching from locally created webpages. I have been trying for years to create my own locally stored webpages and use them as a program launcher & I am not alone in this desire either. Microsoft claims they removed this feature for security reasons, but I would much rather be able to use my computer like I want to than not have the ability. A feature should be added that will easily allow someone to turn on this ability if they so choose for a single or series of webpages that are locally based.

There are many other options I can use to launch my programs but I would like to centralize my computer usage around my browser and do everything with it including program launching.

The third thing I would like to see in Windows Eight is native animated icon support. The computers of today have both the processing power and memory capabilities to serve such a feature but it is not offered in any version of Windows and the 3rd parties solutions when available are buggy and do not work well. Native high-res animated icon support is clearly the way to go and would go a long way to soothing my eye-candy addiction. Animated effects on the taskbar, windows, browsers, and program search bars would be welcome additions as well.

The forth thing I would like to see added to Windows 8 is another eye-candy option. I would like the native ability to change the background of individual folder windows just like I can choose an individual icon with the option to include animated backgrounds if I so choose.

The fifth thing I would love to see added into Windows 8 is a free personal edition of Microsoft Office including Outlook, OneNote and Word with the option to upgrade to other features as needed. The advertising supported version of Microsoft Office 10 in Windows 7 is pointless because non-targeted advertising is not worth the money spent creating it and the basic office features I listed above are all a family needs to organize their lives. I would be willing to pay an extra $50 for Windows Eight if it included a non-advertising supported version of the latest Microsoft Office software listed above.As you can see there are a lot of improvements that can be made to the Windows operating system and I hope that the next operating system after Windows 7 has all of these features and much more. Microsoft, this is an invitation to impress and surprise me!

Google Brings- Ads to Mobile Search

Nine times out of 10, if you're walking down the street and you search for "coffee" on your smartphone, it's because you're in serious need of a cup of joe. You don't want a Wikipedia article or a website for coffee aficionados, you want a caffeine injection right now - and Google's on board with you.

Google introduced hyperlocal search ads for mobile devices this morning, bringing you closer to what you want, when you want it.

Surojit Chaterjee, the product manager for Google Mobile Ads, writes that the feature will help to create "more meaningful connections" by delivering "down to the block level information about your business at the right place and the right time." The results will appear as a OneBox result on mobile devices, which a blue pointer icon and a distance, as long as the smartphone user has allowed Google to use their location.

As we reported earlier today, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told the crowd at TechCrunch Disrupt this week that mobile search is the future of Google. "Eventually, we think mobile will be the majority of the searches and the majority of the revenue," he said.

Small steps like the move to this hyperlocal search feature - and getting advertisers to provide the necessary information - are the building blocks to this future.

Google Cloud Computing

Google Docs rolled out a new feature today, with the addition of a "Version history" for uploaded files. Now you can upload new versions of the same file, and the URL and sharing and folder settings will remain the same. To use this new feature, select a file, then choose the "Add or manage versions" option. From there, you can upload a new version and download or delete older versions.A useful change, but not the most exciting Google Doc news of the day.

That comes from the Google System Blog, an unofficial Google blog, that has found some indication in the Google Docs source code that some more interesting updates may be in the works. "Coming soon," reads the code, "Third party applications, cloud printers, and sync devices."

Google Cloud Print

Google's Cloud Print is a not-yet-available feature that will be associated with the Chrome OS. "Our goal," says Google,"is to build a printing experience that enables any app (web, desktop, or mobile) on any device to print to any printer anywhere in the world." Rather than relying on the local operating system and its print drivers to control the process, Google Cloud Print will handle the printing.

Even though Cloud Print isn't available yet, Google is laying the groundwork for its release. And it says that any app - web apps and native apps - should be able to use Cloud Print, via an API. Google says it wants to simplify the printing process, ending some of the problems of setting up networks for printers.

But the main question that people will have, Google admits, is, "How do the printers communicate with Google Cloud Print?" The answer is, "It depends on whether the printer is a cloud-aware printer or a legacy printer."

Cloud-aware printers will "soon be a reality," says Google. But right now, every printer in the world falls into the "legacy" category. To accomplish this, Google will use a proxy, "a small piece of software that sits on a PC where the printer is installed. The proxy takes care of registering the printer with Google Cloud Print and awaiting print jobs from the service. When a job arrives, it submits the print job to the printer using the PC operating system's native print stack and sends job status back to the printer."

Third Party Apps and Syncing
It's possible that the third party applications and sync devices that are "coming soon" will also involve the Chrome OS store, reported delayed til later this year. And syncing - we hope - will mean that we will finally be able to work offline with our Google Docs and files and have them sync when we're back online.

Air-bound travelers this holiday season will find that they don't have to worry about being disconnected from the Internet, even for a few hours. The Google Chrome browser team has joined with three airlines to offer free in-flight Wi-Fi on more than 700 planes for approximately 15 million passengers this holiday season.

This is the second year in a row that Google has offered free Wi-Fi, with the program expanding this year to three airlines - AirTran, Delta and Virgin America. According to the Free Holiday Wi-Fi website, the deal will last from Nov. 20, 2010 through Jan. 2, 2011. To connect, simply search for the Gogo Inflight network and connect your device.

If you're asking yourself "Why?", just take a look at last year's program. According to The Next Web, users of the free Wi-Fi were sent to a landing page promoting the Nexus One, just before its launch. This year, we imagine, those 15 million potential customers will see a splash page promoting Google's ever-growing entry into the browser market, Google Chrome. We have to wonder how much of a push a campaign like this could give to the number three browser.

As Google notes in its press release, if flying used to be your excuse to disconnect, it will be no more:

Not too long ago, flying home for the holidays meant disconnecting for several hours until you touched down at your destination. Today, Wi-Fi technologies allow us to stay connected even at 30,000 feet above the ground, so we can read the news, browse the web (to beat the long-haul boredom) and send that last-minute planning email before the family reunion. This holiday season, there will be more connected flyers than ever before.

Personally, I never found flying all that relaxing in the first place, so having some Wi-Fi to pass the time and get some work done sounds great. I'd rather spend my disconnected time on the ground and with friends and family than on a plane. Cheers, Google.

How to Enable or Disable Hibernation in Windows 7

Enabling or Disabling the “Hibernate” option in Windows 7 or Vista is not as simple as it used to be in Windows XP. For Windows 7 a different approach has to be followed to accomplish the same job. In this post you will find how to enable or disable the Hibernate option in Windows 7.

Hibernation is a power saving option which was designed primarily for laptops. Unlike “sleep mode” which puts the open documents and files into the memory, hibernation puts all the open files and documents on to the hard disk and shuts down the computer without drawing even a small amount of power. Thus hibernation becomes an excellent way to save power and resume Windows back to the state where it was left off. If you really want to use this feature on Windows 7 then you need to enable this option. This can be done as follows.

1. Open the Command Prompt with “Administrator rights”. To do so, type cmd in Start menu and then hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
2. Now type the following command in the command prompt and hit Enter.powercfg /hibernate on3. Type exit and hit Enter to close the Command Prompt.

Now you should see the “Hibernate” option in the Start menu. If not then perform the following steps.

A. Type Power Options in the Start menu and hit Enter.

B. In the left pane, open the link labeled “Change when the computer sleeps” and then open the link “Change advanced power settings”.

Now a small window will pop-up as shown below:

C. Now expand the Sleep tree and turn off Allow Hybrid Sleep as shown in the above screenshot.

D. Now you should see the Hibernate option in the Start menu
