How to Protect Dogs from the Summer Heat

Leave your dog at home, not in the car. More dogs die of heat exhaustion in parked cars than in any other situation. The car gets too hot--even if you leave your dog for only a short time.

Exercise in the cooler times of day. People love running with their dogs and often think that a dog has no problem handling the heat. This is not true. The risk of heat exhaustion can be reduced by running in the cooler times of the morning or evening. Also avoid hot pavement, which can burn the pads of your dog's paws.

Hydrate your dog. Always carry dog-dedicated water and a foldable water bowl on walks and hikes.

Wrap that dog! Wrapping a cool pad or wet bandana around your dog's neck before heading outside can help her stay cooler and avoid heat exhaustion.

Brush your dog. Brushing your dog's coat often can help decrease the risk of heat exhaustion, especially if your dog has a heavy coat.

Keep it cool. During the hot times of the day, keep your dog in safe, cool environment. Provide the dog with plenty of water. Make sure there is always a fresh, cool water supply available for your pet at home.

Protect his nose. If you are going to be outside in the sun with your dog, put sunscreen on its nose. It is a part of a dog's body that is not protected by hair and is so very susceptible to sunburn

Bedbugs going to the dogs at Philadelphia event

Dozens of dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds are in Philadelphia to see if their sniffers are up to snuff in the battle against bedbugs.Hundreds of people from around the country are attending the National Canine Conference this week. As part of the event, 30 dogs and their handlers are trying for official certification as bedbug location canines.The dogs and their owners are taking part in exercises in which they walk down a hallway lined with containers — some with bedbugs inside. The dogs have to pick the right containers to get certified.Bedbug infestations are tough to eradicate. The apple seed-size critters have been found in hotels, movie theaters, retail stores and homes nationwide. Some are even developing resistance to insecticides commonly used to kill them.

Cat found alive after fatal NYC fire

NEW YORK — Fatty Girl, a 3-year-old cat, has been reunited with her owner after being found alive following a fatal weekend fire at a Brooklyn apartment building.
The cat's owner, Wright Gillette, says she won't let him put her down. Firefighters reunited them on Wednesday.
Gillette told the New York Post that the Himalayan mix was the last of the family's five cats to be found after the Saturday fire in Flatbush.
Firefighter Matthew Laface told the paper firefighters found Fatty Girl hiding beneath a table before she ran into a closet and then under a bed. They were eventually able to grab her and bring her out in a suitcase.
A 64-year-old resident of the 70-apartment building died in the blaze. It took firefighters seven hours to extinguish the wind-fueled blaze.

Change the way outdoor dogs are treated!!

Mayor Bloomberg recently signed into law two bills that will fundamentally improve the lives of animals in New York City, and change the way outdoor dogs are treated.One bill makes it illegal to restrain dogs outdoors for longer than three hours in a continuous 12-hour period of time. Repeat violations within one year carry fines of up to $500 and three months in prison.It will also be illegal to restrain a dog for any amount of time with a device that is a choke or pinch collar; has weights attached or links that are more than one-quarter inch thick; is likely to become entangled; is long enough to allow movement off the owner’s property; or could allow the animal to move over an object or edge that could result in strangulation or injury to the animal. The law takes effect on May 1st.

Man's best friend is being trained to protect children with severe allergies from potential threats in everyday life.

Parents with children who have allergies know just how dangerous one mistake can be. It can strike constant fear in their lives.

10-month-old pit bull mix Layla, who was rescued, and is now being trained to sniff out any form of peanuts that can trigger a deadly reaction for her owner. The family first met Layla at Snug Pet Resort when the family was simply looking for a place to keep their dog while they went to a local theme park. They asked out of curiosity if the dog could be trained to sniff out peanuts.

Layla is now finding and pointing out everything from sandwiches to candy bars. She recently sniffed out peanut crumbs that has been there for six months.

Dogs at shelter getting flu shots

Thanks to a grant, dogs that live at the Johnston County animal shelter will soon be getting their flu shots.Johnston County Animal Services has landed a $20,000 grant from the Petfinder.com Foundation. The money will purchase about 2,200 doses of the vaccine. The shelter's vaccine doses will not be enough to slow the flu's spread throughout the pet population in Johnston County the shelter hopes to make more people aware of the little-known ailment. The Pet finder Foundation created the grant because shelter dogs are more at risk for canine influenza.

Jersey City Looks to Increase Dog License Fees and Offer Longer Discounted License Terms

Jersey City is looking to change the law governing dog licenses, with the City Council considering a proposal to increase the annual fee the city collects from dog owners while offering a new discounted three-year license term.Under the proposal, the annual dog license fee would rise from $6.70 per neutered dog and $9.70 per unneutered dog to $8 per neutered dog and $12 per unneutered dog; those are increases of 19.4 percent and 23.7 percent, respectively. But in part to offset the fee increase and in part to make it easier for owners to license their dogs, the city would also offer the option of a three-year discounted license costing $20 per neutered dog and $30 per unneutered dog. If an owner obtained a three-year license on a neutered dog under the proposed pricing structure, he or she would actually be saving10 cents on the fee, not to mention any postage cost associated with mailing the form in each year.

The ordinance will be up for an introduction vote at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. If successfully introduced, it will face a public hearing and final vote on January 26.

A male Beagle wandered into a home off of 301 in Cold Spring on Sunday. He is sweet, lovable but very confused and scared. He is not neutered and is wearing a brown leather collar with a phone number carved into it. The number is disconnected. Please help us find this dog's owner! The Shih Tzu is an ideal family dog. The breed is playful and lively. This ‘cute-as-a button’ charmer is very affectionate and loves being around people. They are generally good with other pets. Children love these little dogs and the feeling is mutual. These dogs respond well to children, as long as they are not mistreated or handled roughly.

Be careful with the amount of food you give this dog breed. Because of their reluctance to exercise, they can become fat quite easily.

Shih Tzu will benefit from early and consistent training, because its small size doesn’t mean this breed is a malleable pushover. In fact, these little dogs, can be quite obstinate. Patient, consistent training is best. Yelling or impatient behavior doesn’t work with these dogs.

If you are looking for a happy little dog that loves play and laughter, then this breed with a royal heritage just might be the perfect choice for you and your family.
