It's that time of the Year: Annual trek to Brimfield

Today I thought I would share a few fun pictures from my annual trip to Brimfield this week. This year I took my son as all my other friends had scheduling conflicts and my husband couldn't take the day off of work. Since my son is 13 and it seems like all we do is fight and argue I thought it would be a great to spend the day together doing something we both love.

I'm happy that I asked him to come along, we had a great day and he went along with all my silliness, like the picture below, ha ha. Of course, I did lay down the law first thing! If you're coming here with me you HAVE to play along with the silly pictures.

A little fake smile, but that's ok.

Every year I take a picture of these funky latex glove forms, they are always waving!

I was so in love with these little rusted wire faces -- but I wanted them individually. I might have to make a few and put them on stakes...they really made me happy!

This foot was huge - my size 9 foot was the size of it's pinky toe, lol.

I thought this mask was kinda cool. He didn't.

Creepy baby parts in a cool jar.

Trims galore. Loved the way these were set up with similar colors together. It looked fabulous!

That's it for pictures. IT was the perfect day as far as weather, company and driving. I'm hoping to go back again this summer with my sweet friend that couldn't come this time. Crossing my fingers!

As she skimmed the article, she couldn’t help but have a little hope that her sweet Winston would be home soon. Ever since those women had found the note the case had been moving along – he had to be found soon.

Oh please. Let him come home soon!

In + Out Series WEEK!!

Today I wanted to share some links to my In + Out Series classes that I'm teaching over at My Creative Classroom. These are ONE lesson classes that I have offered once a month since the beginning of the year.

Some of them are technique classes and some of them are project classes.

But in each of them you get TONS of video and information. The Art Journal one that I had last fall was EXTREMELY popular -- so popular that we decided to run it again.

In the Watercolor for Stampers and In + Out Embossing classes you will learn everything you need to know to add these two beautiful techniques to your cards and stamped projects.

For the Easter class I'm sharing a sweet and easy way to make an Easter Decoration that everyone will love. (Note: While I realize it's not Easter right now -- you can use the techniques to create any project like this -- and what a SWEET Fairy House or other child's project it would be!)

Spellbinders Mix + Match was another EXTREMELY popular course -- in this class you'll learn tons of techniques and I'll share step by steps to create 3 creative and beautiful cards you can whip up in NO time!

I've included the links on each image so you can click on it to go to My Creative Classroom and read the entire class description, supply list and other pertinent information you might have.

For the In + Out Series I'm offering a special incentive if you sign up to take them all!! Art Journal Round Robin

Today I wanted to share a fun project I did with some brave and creative women when I was at Kept Creations in Whitman, Mass last Saturday. I call this Round Robin Art Journal Page -- and it is a TON of fun. Great for anyone whether they can draw or not.

We started out drawing on a piece of 9 x 12 Mixed Media Paper from Strathmore. We each drew on our own page for 3 minutes -- which was a VERY long time. When the timer went off we sent our page off to the rest of the group and then drew for 1 minute on each of the pages as they came around.

I think we had 6 or 7 people in the Round Robin -- plenty of people to fill up EVERY page with unique, creative and beautiful shapes and images.

This week I had time to add some color to mine using the Sakura Gelly Pens.

The only problem with them -- not enough colors :-D

I absolutely love the opaqueness of them!

Weekend Re-Cap - Right at Home Scrapbooking

I was at one of my favorite places to teach over the weekend -- Right at Home Scrapbooking in North Attleboro, MA teaching one of my favorite art techniques -- monoprinting!

I just loved seeing the lightbulb come on for everyone as they watched my demos and then experimented with their own Gelli Plates.

It was a FULL day of printing -- in the morning I taught them all about the plate and lots of cool ways to get texture and use various tools with the paper and plate.

We laughed a lot. And got a lot of shoppers interested in what we were up to. We laughed a LOT!

In the afternoon I showed them how to create this lovely project. I think they all loved it. I know they all did an amazing job with playing and experimenting.

It was great fun -- can't wait to go back.

Next weekend I'll be at Kept Creations in Whitman MA teaching my Art Journal Toolbox class.

DIY Smash Art Journal

This week I'll be working with some girls art a local school to share with them how to make a smash journal from scraps of papers and add paints and other elements.

This journal was made with old scrapbook papers and my Cinch binding system -- so fun and easy! I ~~think~~ hope the girls are going to like it!

Right at Home Scrapbooking

For those local artists -- I've got two workshops this weekend in North Attleboro at Right at Home Scrapbooking! Friday night is an art Journaling Open House. We'll have a little snack and chat time and then make some art in our journals from 7 to 10.

On Saturday it's all about learning how to monoprint using the Gelli Plate -- from 10 to 4 with a break for lunch! I'll teach you everything you need to know to make beautiful collage papers. In the afternoon we'll create a beautiful project!

RD 21 Challenge #2

Thought I'd share a fun art journal page I did a while back, it turned out to be a favorite from some of my recent pages.

I started by collaging some vintage papers to my Mixed Media Paper from Strathmore and sketching my design. Once I had the design all figured out I traced over it with a permanent marker and painted the background areas white.

Once I was happy with the base art I used my Tim Holtz Distress paints to add some color. My Gelly Pens were just right for some added details here and there.

They found the note scrawled in a scrap of wood that was covered in layers of weathered and crackled paint. The note might have been as old as the scrap of wood – but Grandma could tell it wasn’t. The scratches looked “too new”.

Grandma immediately started thinking.

the Happy Birthday Project

I love how serendipitous (the faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident) things happen.

It's no secret by now that I'm a designer for Sizzix, and I think you also might know that the lovely and sweetest Tammy Tutterow is our fearless leader. I was more than a little bit ecstatic when I reviewed my work schedule for the week to see that I had penciled in that I would create one of my first projects for Sizzix and unbeknownst to me I would be posting it on her birthday. woohoo. happy dance.

And, it was also serendipitous that I happened to pick up this sweet carnation stamp at Kept Creations on Saturday, everyone needs a little something new once in a while.

Since today is Tammy's birthday AND I scheduled today to create something for Sizzix it seemed to make sense that I dedicate my first project to her. So, here's to you Tammy -- I hope you have a great birthday!

I think (well I hope) it's everything that you will love!

I also thought I'd share some quick instructions to make the pretty carnations if you want to give it a shot!

You will want to grab some tissue paper and the pretty Flowers #3 set from Stephanie Barnard.

Fold the tissue paper so you have at least 20 layers and use your Big Shot to cut them out.

The stack of tissue paper flowers will look a lot like this when they come right out of the die.

You really want them to look like this. I re-stacked about 10 of the tissue paper flowers into a random pile like this.

I used some cotton pearl and a needle to sew one single stitch in the center of the stack. You'll want to tie a knot on the backside to keep them together and leave the tail about 3" long.

Next just crunch them up to make your carnation.

To add some color, spritz with your favorite spray ink, I used Cherry Cola Chalkboard from Tattered Angels.

If you want to make your flower look like a bud, wrap some floral tape around the bottom and extend it down the tail a little bit and trim the tail off.

Then you can use hot glue or any type of glue you like to to attach them to your project.

Day 21 of the 21 Day Challenge

Phew. I did it.

21 Days of finding a little bit of time here and there to make some art in my art journal, just for me. It was awesome. And really, so easy to make the time for it -- I found a few minutes while the coffee was brewing in the morning, while the cake baked or the onions caramelized, watching a movie in the evening -- and so many other times during the day. Before I knew it I had a page that was complete.

Some days took more than one day to complete -- but it was good. That meant that I was definitely going to find the time the next day because I loved what I was creating.

I've got a nice stack of pages to create into a new journal -- SEVENTEEN if them actually -- that I'm over the moon excited about. Today, since I'm nearing the end of a big project I thought I would share a few of my favorite pages from the last 21 days.

I still need to find some time for today -- but I've got my drawing all ready -- it just needs some color.

My love for a Dip Pen

I haven't been using my Dip pen much lately really. I think mostly because I hadn't been making the time to journal daily. I am so happy that today is Day 13 (I think) of my 21 Day Challenge with Rhonna Farrer.

When it comes out looking like this, I am reminded that I should use it more often.

And especially on tough work days. Like yesterday. It is strangely relaxing and satisfying to create a pretty page in the midst of all that angst from yesterday.

I'm headed in to do more battle with my computer today -- so I'm going to remember to follow my heart and take a break to art journal later when I get frustrated.

it's not the journey

Sharing the process for another journal page with you. First, I start out with a pencil sketch. And actually, this one was inspired by a picture in Good Housekeeping magazine that I spied on Sunday.

I came home and uploaded it from my phone to my 'puter and proceeded to sketch it.

It was the sketching part that made me think of my journey, how I'm inspired and how I turn that inspiration into reality.

Which then inspired my brain to work with words to come up with this quote. I then get my permanent ink pen out and commit the pencil lines and then start laying in the color. I mentioned yesterday that I am in love with Tim Holtz Distress Paints -- and that is what I used -- exclusively for this page today.

When the color part is done I get my dip pen and calligraphy ink out and ink in the text.

And then I photograph it to share it here or on Instagram and start on the next page.

Art Journaling - Keeping it Private

I mentioned last week that I've been following along with Rhonna Farrer's 21 Day Challenge. Yesterday (Sunday) was day 10 and I must say ~~finding~~ making the time to journal every day before I do anything else has been wonderful. I've been busy -- and stressed and making pretty art has been a great way to start my day and a big bright spot that I look forward to when I go to bed every night! The last few nights I've been prepping my pages before I go to bed so I have more time to paint in the morning!

I thought I would share my process of art journaling -- with both art and words -- but words I don't necessarily want public.

First I write -- in pencil and fill my page with just rambling. Sometimes I turn the page this way and that to make it even more random. Then I take a permanent marker and draw on top of the writing.

When I have filled the page with both words and art I use Gesso to fill in the background and hide most of the words.

The art kinda starts coming to life at this point and you can't really make out what I'm writing about -- just random words here and there! When the background is all filled in I start adding color.

I've recently discovered Tim Holtz Distress paints are perfect and lovely for art journaling and painting like watercolor paints. I'm pretty much smitten with the paints.

I think I'm going to have to have them all. yes. ALL. Plus, the colors are LOVELY.

When I'm done with all the painting, you can't really make out what I was writing about, just that I painted over a page filled with hand-written words.

When you are done, your page looks beautiful, you worked out your feelings for the day AND you made some pretty art.

What more could a gal ask for anyway?

21 Day Challenge

My friend Martha started the latest version of the 21 Day Challenge with Rhonna Farrer -- I was so stressed that I haven't been giving myself any "me art time" that I decided to join in too. I've been so busy over the last few months that journaling for me just kinda went out the window. I love combining art and words.

I found myself stressed.

Blocked.

Uninspired.

and angry.

super angry.

Like really I'm quitting everything I do angry.

So -- this challenge came at the right time.

I want to re-set my priorities.
So that I come first and my family too.

And then rather than feel guilty about creating art for me, embrace it and work with it.

I want to enjoy my art, my life, my family.
I definitely NEED to find time to be healthy.

I want to experiment with color and design and make time for my family. Wait, I think I mentioned that 3 times already. Yes -- it's that important to me -- they go "do" things so I can stay home and work. hmmm, not fun. missing out.

And I don't want to be angry all the time. and stressed about getting work done when I don't feel appreciated.

I would say that's a successful 7 day start, art and words really help me. It needs to be a habit. I want it to be a habit, and I've got 7 days under my belt, woohoo for me.
