Hakeem Ahmad Shuja; a Famous Urdu Poet and Playwriter

Hakim Ahmad Shuja (also sometimes written as 'Hakeem Ahmed Shujah') (born 1893-died January 1969), MBE, was a famous Urdu and Persian poet, playwright, writer, scholar and mystic, from former British India, later Pakistan.

Hakim Ahmad Shuja belonged to an old and prominent family of mystics and Islamic religious scholars, who had migrated from Arabia and Turkey to India, between the 10th-11th centuries AD. During the times of the Sultans of Delhi, the family came to prominence as religious divines and Hakims i.e. practitioners of the traditional Hikmat (the Unani, or Greek system of medicine) and by the time of the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great (c.1542-1605) they were established as Court Physicians at Lahore, in the Bhati Gate area of the Old City. Later, family members served as Chief Qazis(or Qadis) at Lahore and Kashmir under Afghan (Durrani) rule, and a branch were ministers during Ranjit Singh's Sikh rule. Ahmad Shuja's father, Hakim Shuja-ed-din, was a Sufi mystic of the Chishtiya Order and one of the early pioneers of the Urdu literary press in Lahore, bringing out the famous "Shor-i-Mahshar" journal and participating actively in the work of the Anjuman-i-Himayat-i-Islam and Anjuman i Punjab associations.

Hakim Ahmad Shuja was the only son of his parents, who both died when he was still a minor and he was brought up largely by an elder cousin, Hakim Amin-ed-din, Barrister. After a basic education in Arabic and Quranic studies at home, and initial Sufic training under various notable mystics, he was then admitted for 'English education' to the old Central Model School, Lahore and later sent to the famous Aligarh University, from where he graduated with honours. For some time, Hakim Ahmad Shuja then worked as a lecturer at the Osmania University in Hyderabad state (Deccan) but was not happy and returned to Lahore to seek employment there. After several journalistic and academic ventures, he eventually settled down to regular service in the secretariat of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, finally retiring as Secretary to the Punjab Assembly in the 1950s.

Hakim Ahmad Shuja was a very prolific and versatile writer indeed, producing several collections of Urdu and Persian poetry, countless essays and belles-lettres published in newspapers and journals throughout India (and later Pakistan), one of the earliest translations of the Quran in Punjabi language, several dramatic works in collaboration with Imtiaz Ali Taj, Agha Hashar and other theatrical producers, and, later on, screenplays and lyrics for the early Indo-Pakistan cinema.

However, his fame today rests chiefly on these noted works: "Lahore ka Chelsea" (1967; 1989 reprint), a collection of memoirs of Old Lahore; "Khoon-Baha" (1962), some of his other personal memoirs; "Gard-i-Karvan" (1950s; reprint 1960), a collection of poems and essays in praise of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the 'Ahl i Bayt' (members of the Prophet's family) as exemplars of the 'Ideal' Muslim character; and his lovely, lyrical poems, some of which were later successfully adapted for film songs. These works reflect his idealism and humane and deeply mystical faith and a Romanticism which reflects both the typical Urdu and Persian poetic traditions, as well as the influence of Western writers such as Shelley, Thomas Carlyle, Goethe and Victor Hugo.

Hakim Ahmad Shuja continued to write even until the time of his death in 1969. Between the 1950s and 1960s, he became especially interested in the potentialities of film-making and cinema. In many ways, thus, he had a direct influence and bearing upon the development of both early Pakistani literature and cinema. In addition, he also made a significant contribution to the early development of Urdu language, linguistics and etymology as permanent secretary and one of the main compilers/editors of Pakistan's Official Language Committee, 1949, responsible for the standardization of official and court terms, from English to Urdu.

Nasir Kazmi

Syed Nasir Raza Kazmi, (1925–1972) (Urdu: سید ناصر رضا كاظمی ) was a renowned Urdu poet of Pakistan. He was one of the greatest poets of this era, especially in the use of "ista'aaray" and "chhotee beher".

Kazmi was born on December 8, 1925 at Ambala in British India. He was educated at Ambala, Simla and Lahore. He returned to Ambala in 1945 and started looking after his ancestral land. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, he came to Lahore. He did some journalistic work with Auraq-e-Nau as an editor and became editor-in-chief of the magazine Humayun in 1952. Later he was associated with Radio Pakistan, Lahore and other literary publications and organizations.

Haider Qureshi (Urdu: حیدر قر یشی ), born Qureshi Ghulam Haider Arshad (Urdu: قر یشی غلا م حیدر ارشد ) on January 13, 1952 in Chenab Nagar, Punjab, is a well-known Pakistani Urdu poet, writer and journalist. His poetry is a rich colours of traditional Urdu and the local lingo. He is also researcher of "mahiya" on correct meter poetry methods. He has written several poetry and prose books and many articles.

Haider Qureshi was born on January 13, 1952 in Chenab Nagar, Punjab, Pakistan in a Seraki-speaking family. His father Qureshi Ghulam Sarwar belonged to Khanpur, Rahim Yar Khan. When he was still a child, he started to write his own verses. After finishing secondary education in 1968, he wrote his first romantic story. At the time he was also working at a sugar mill. Later he obtained his Master of Arts (M.A.) in Urdu literature in 1976. He wrote his first ghazal in 1971 which published in a weekly magazine Lahore. He has visited several countries.

Ghazal by Haider Qureshi

Haider Qureshi was a active member of literary circles in Khanpur. His five publications are related to anthologies of ghazal, nazm and mahiya. His short stories, pen sketches, inshaiya (light essays), a travelog of his pilgrimage to Mecca and a recently published literary journal titled "Umre-La ' haasil ka Haasil" (The outcome of futile life) are ample proof of his being a prolific writer while living in Germany. He is a strong supporter of Urdu mahiya and has been praised for his work on mahiya and also criticized in the poetry circles.

He is the editor of the literary Urdu magazine Jadeed Adab, which is published both online and in print. It was first launched from Khanpur in 1978, and later from Germany. Haider Qureshi's poetry has been translated into English, Arabic, German and Turkish. At the University of Bahawalpur in Pakistan, a student has written a research thesis on him for his master of arts degree, and a PhD thesis has been written on Qureshi and on his literary work by a student at Gulbarga University of Karnataka, India.

Sir Muhammad Iqbal (Urdu: محمد اقبال) born (November 9, 1877 – April 21, 1938) was a converted Muslim poet and philosopher born in Sialkot, British India (now in Pakistan), whose poetry in Urdu and Persian is considered to be among the greatest of the modern era, and whose vision of an independent state for the Muslims of British India was to inspire the creation of Pakistan. He is commonly referred to as Allama Iqbal (علامہ اقبال‎, Allama lit. Scholar).

Allama's Poetry has put a great effect on the Muslim generation in 20th century. Many pieces of his poetry are considered to be the masterpiece of the Urdu poetry treasury.

Tariq Ki Dua is a beautiful poem by Allama Iqbal in which he describes the pray of Tariq bin Ziyad, the great Muslim Commander who conquered Spain. Allama Syed Abul Hassan Ali Nadvi, the great Muslim scholar of 20th century and an expert of Iqbaliyat has written an article of the same poem. Here I am going to post the article. Dr. Anwar Zahidi

Anwer Zahidi (Urdu: انور زاہدی )(born July 9, 1946) is a Pakistani Urdu author of more than twelve books of poetry, short stories, travelogue and translations. After completing his graduation in science from Punjab University, Anwer Zahidi received a degree of MBBS from Nishtar Medical College, Multan in 1970.

A practicing physician by profession, Anwer Zahidi has carved out a place for himself in the world of letters. He is a short story writer, a poet and translator. His collection of verse Sunaehre Dinon Ki Shairi (Poetry of the Golden Days—1985) was followed by Azab-e Shaher Panah (The Torture of the Ramparts) collection of short stories, in 1991. New collection of poems Meri Aankhen Samadar and short stories Mausam Jang Ka Kahani Muhabbat Ki are under publication.

Dr. Anwar Zahidi

Dr. Zahidi is not only a creative writer but also a literary critic. His collection of critical writings on the world's great literary figures, called Bazyaft, has just been completed. Zahidi has also made a name for himself as a translator. His knowledge of Persian, which he mastered during three-year stay in Iran, is of invaluable assistance to him in his translations from Persian.

He also translated Hermann Hesse in Barishon Ka Mausam (The Rainy Season) and Carl Jung's Psychology of the Unconscious for the National Language Authority. Besides these highly technical books he has also translated Arabic, Turkish and Latin American literary masterpieces. One of his masterpieces in the field of translation is Pablo Neruda's autobiography, which is certainly an invaluable addition to Urdu letters.

Mumtaz Mufti, one of the leading literary figures in Pakistan, entitled his review of Anwer Zahidi’s literary work, “Part-time poet” - implying that this work was somehow secondary to his principle vocation of a physician at a leading hospital in Islamabad. In fact, “Full-time poet and part-time doctor” would have been more accurate. Since graduation from Nishtar Medical College, Multan (University of Punjab) in 1970, he has practiced medicine, first in the military (1971–73), then as a private practitioner (1973–76), and subsequently in public hospitals in two countries, Iran (1976–80) and Pakistan (1980 to date). Yet, ever since 1968, when one of his poems got published in a reputed Urdu magazine, Nairang-e-Khyal, literature has been his primary occupation.

Exposure to great Western literature - in English translations – led him to an interest in translating favorite pieces from English into Urdu. Over time, Anwer zahidi has translated some of the greatest writers of various languages into Urdu. These include Tolstoy, Hesse, Neruda, Dickens, and Pessoa. From Western literature he moved gradually towards other great writers including the Kirghiz epic poet, Manas, and most importantly modern Persian poets like Neema Yosheej, Ahmad Shamlo, and Frogh Furrukhzad. Translating Iranian poetry (directly from Persian) into Urdu was enormously edifying. These writers are the pioneers of the new literary movement of Iran; they have broken the metric rigidity of the traditional Persian Ghazal and revolutionized its poetic vision, and have had a deep impact upon the literary movements in the sub-continent. The study of contemporary Persian literature completely revolutionized his poetic diction, including the infusion of elements of rebellion in early romantic formulas.

Anwar Zahidi

Although Anwer Zahidi is known in South Asia primarily as a “modern” poet (Nazam-e-Azad), some of his most intense work is in the genre of abstract short stories. They enable a mode of expression that is difficult to incorporate into the poetic structure. Reflecting the nature of injustice and absurdity in contemporary existence, these short stories tend to take an acrid view of life.

Prose writing also led him into translations of prose and non-fiction, including memoirs (Neruda) essays (Hesse), psychology (Jung).

Anwar Zahidi has authored about a dozen books comprising of Poetry, Short Stories Collection (Afsana) Travelogue and Translation from otherlanguages into Urdu. Some of his books are mentioned below.

Ehsan Sehgal (Urdu: احسان سہگل), born Khawaja Ehsan Elahi Sehgal (Urdu: خواجہ احسان الہی سہگل ) on November 15, 1951, is a Pakistani Urdu poet and writer who has lived in the Netherlands since 1978. He is also a journalist and activist for democracy and the freedom of the press and of speech.

Sehgal has written a novel and several books of poetry; his articles have been published in various Urdu newspapers.

Sehgal was born in Larkana, Pakistan, in a Punjabi business family. His father, Khawaja Manzoor Elahi Sehgal, was from Pind Dadan Khan, Pakistan. Ehsan Sehgal received his elementary and secondary education in Larkana. He later moved to Karachi. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from University of Sindh, Hyderabad, and obtained Master of Arts Urdu (M.A.) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degrees from University of Karachi. He worked in several firms before he began his career in journalism. Sehgal distinguished himself as a journalist, but "unfavorable conditions" forced him to leave the country. In 1978, he sought political asylum in the Netherlands, settling in The Hague to work as a freelance journalist. He currently freelances for Urdu newspapers and magazines and online daily newspapers.

Ehsan Sehgal

Sehgal's first publication was a novel, but his next books were all collections of poetry. He writes mostly in the poetic form called Ghazal, but he has also written Rubaiyat, Nazm, Qat'aa, and Naat. He also writes in the meter called Beher.

Besides the novel and books of poetry, he published a collection of quotes and articles in 1999. In 2010, he published a collection of aphorisms in Dutch, having lived in the Netherlands for over three decades and feeling the desire to share his ideas with a Dutch audience. The book, De Wijze Weg ("The Wise Road"), was written and translated with the help of Naeem Arif.

Ehsan Sehgal has been awarded many international awards including;

"Molana Maher-ul-Qadri Award" in 2001 from Urdu Trust London, U.K.

"Allama Shariq Jamal Award" in 2005 from Bazm-e-Shaoor-e-Adab. Jaipur, India.

"Faiz Ahmad Faiz Award" in 2011 from Urdu Tahreek Aalami London, U.K.

Ibn-e-Safi (also spelled as Ibne Safi) (Urdu: ابنِ صفی) was the pen name of Asrar Ahmad (Urdu: اسرار احمد), a best-selling and prolific fiction writer, novelist and poet of Urdu. He is known globally for his fabulous Urdu spy novels of Imran Series and Jasusi Dunya.

Ibn-e-Safi

His main works were the 125-book series Jasoosi Dunya (The Spy World) and the 120-book Imran Series, with a small canon of satirical works and poetry. His novels were characterized by a blend of mystery, adventure, suspense, violence, romance and comedy, achieving massive popularity across a broad readership in South Asia.

His son Dr. Ahmad Safi had written an essay on him, at the time when this great novelist passed away. I feel pleasant to share the feelings of a loyal son for his successful father. I am sure you will like this post. Here you go!

Zakhm-e-Nihan

Zakhm-e-Nihan (English: The Hidden Wound) (Urdu: زخمِ نہاں) is a fabulous, fantastic and fun to read romantic Urdu novel written by Aleem Ul Haq Haqqi, the famous and well known Urdu romantic and social novelist who is well known for his masterpiece Urdu novel "Ishq Ka Ain" and the fabulous "Ishq ka Sheen."

The novel tells the story of a boy who does not have any emotions. He always treats things on realistic level and does not go to the emotions. But when he falls in love he realizes what emotions are.

Rashid Naweed, is a brilliant student and very good player of Tannis. He is fond of photography and is seen always with his Camera. One day he calls police to his hostel room and informs that his best friend and Roommate Muzaffar has committed suicide. Muzaffar comes to room and informs him that he is going to commit suicide. He lets him do that and goes on reading book and watches his friend dying. He believes that his friend had the freedom to do to him whatever he wanted as it was his life and that’s why when he decided to commit suicide he just let him do that.

While packing Muzaffar's belongings he finds his sister Sumaira's picture and keeps it with him. Later he receives a later from Sumaira a Letter in which she blames him for killing his brother as he did not stop him from suicide.

He decides to know Muzaffar's family and specially Sumaira and visits Murree where they stay these days. In Murree he finds Sumaira and both fall in love with each other but Sumaira is unaware of his real identity. Does Sumaira forgive him when she knows about him? Why did Muzaffar commit suicide??
