IBM Claim Fastest Processor

2013-02-10T05:20:00.002-08:00

Keep in mind when a 1.4GHz processor was deemed the world's fastest? Man, that was ages ago. freshly, IBM has laid claim to that very record, with its 5.2GHz z196 processor being the central point. Of course, we've seen a number of customer chips hum along at speeds well beyond that (thanks to sophisticated cooling systems, of course), but this here enterprise chip does it without any liquid nitrogen-based assistance. It's a four-core slab that was manufactured using the garments 45 nanometer technology, boasting 1.4 billion transistors and the ability to handle more than 50 billion instructions per second. Interestingly, Fujitsu's Venus CPU is said to handle a staggering 128 billion calculations per second, so we're guessing that IBM won't be snagging this crown without any argue from the competition. At any rate, there's a very convincing video waiting for you after the break, and no, you won't find this thing in your next Alienware anytime soon.

Sphero team hacks together an Android controlled blender

2013-01-16T10:24:00.002-08:00

Having won the AT&T developer hackathon just before CES this year, the Sphero developer team decided that their booth was the perfect place to create an Android-controlled blender. To accomplish this, the team took one of their Sphero robots and rigged it up to the blender in less than 20 minutes.

The Orbotix team has a history of having a good time. These robotics professionals view taking things apart and messing with them as downtime, which is one of the reasons their Sphero product is so developer friendly. As the team celebrates 20 apps that interact with the Sphero directly at CES this year, they felt it was necessary to demonstrate that the hardware used in their little robots can do just about anything. To accomplish this the team invited me to come to their booth and help hack a Sphero onto a blender. Well, I say help, but really I just held tools for Sphero founder Adam Wilson while he did all the work.

Since Sphero robots are sealed within their plastic casing, the team used an early unit that had a clear and removable casing. The important parts for this hack lie within the board that controls the Sphero, which you can see in greater detail in our look inside the ball last year.

There are several places on the robot that generate enough power to activate the switch that will be soldered on to the blender. The basic idea here is that when a command is given to the Sphere from the Android phone, the robot would trip the switch, which would in turn activate the blender. Once the best place was located, a pair of wires were soldered in place. These wires were, in turn, connected to a switch that would be used to turn the blender on once power was received. Once the Sphero had been augmented, it was time for the blender.

It’s unlikely that most people will attempt this hack using the same techniques, since most who order the $130 robot would rather play with it intact.

Sphero has had a great year, going from a small company that had a cool product that most people weren’t quite sure what to do with, to a platform full of apps and games. Despite the growth, the company is clearly still all about having fun while working.

Nokia files vibrating tattoo patent!

2012-04-07T06:45:00.007-07:00

Nokia has filed a patent in the US for a vibrating tattoo which could herald the beginning phone alerts being felt through the user's skin.

The patent suggests a way of tattooing, stamping or spraying "ferromagnetic" material onto a user's skin and then pairing it with a mobile device.

The application lists Cambridge-based Zoran Radivojevic as the innovation's lead inventor.

"Examples of... applications may be low battery indication, received message, received call, calendar alert, change of profile, eg based on timing, change of time zone, or any other," the filing reads.

"The magnetic field may cause vibration of one short

pulse, multiple short pulses, few long pulses... strong pulses, weak pulses and so on."

A spokeswoman for Nokia was unable to confirm whether Nokia intended to follow up its patent

application with further research.

Google bypassed privacy settings tracking cookies discovered in Safari and IE

2012-02-24T09:24:00.001-08:00

After the discovery that Google had bypassed privacy settings in Apple's Safari browser, Microsoft has announced that the same problem occurs in Internet Explorer.

A blog from the IE engineering team published yesterday read;

When the IE team heard that Google had bypassed user privacy settings on Safari, we asked ourselves a simple question: is Google circumventing the privacy preferences of Internet Explorer users too? We’ve discovered the answer is yes: Google is employing similar methods to get around the default privacy protections in IE and track IE users with cookies.

It went on to say;

We’ve found that Google bypasses the P3P Privacy Protection feature in IE. The result is similar to the recent reports of Google’s circumvention of privacy protections in Apple’s Safari Web browser, even though the actual bypass mechanism Google uses is different.

Microsoft also published hints for users to protect their privacy, check them out at;

Wikipedia black out in Piracy Protest

2012-01-22T07:56:00.000-08:00

Wikipedia is holding a 24 hour blackout of it's English language pages in protest of proposed new anti piracy legislation in the U.S.

Instead, Wikipedia is showing a splash page which says; "the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet."

Google and Craiglist are protesting by featuring pleas that the U.S. public contact members of Congress and urge them to vote against the Stop Online Piracy Act, (SOPA), and the Senate version called Protect IP. Craiglist's snarky note: "Corporate paymasters, KEEP THOSE CLAMMY HANDS OFF THE INTERNET!"

SOPA is a bill that intends to allow corporations to censor the Internet and target rogue sites, according to cnet, these are; 'Web sites that happen to be located in a nation more hospitable to copyright infringement than the United States is.'

Cnet is hosting a FAQ on the Act at; http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-57329001-281/how-sopa-would-affect-you-faq/?tag=mncol;txt

SOPA was announced in October by Republican Lamar Smith and has proved hugely controversial and produced a fierce outcry from the US public and Internet businesses.

The bill is expected to be voted in next week.

CES - Samsung's Smart Window

2012-01-13T07:33:00.000-08:00

Earlier today we covered Samsung’s remarkable new OLED TV. In a year where the newest and best TVs seem to be the unofficial theme of CES, this one stood out from the crowd for its remarkable display technology.

Well, it looks like Samsung had more in their bag of awesome than just a great new TV. At their booth today they’ve been showing off their new Smart Window transparent LCD display. Let me say that again: Transparent. LCD. Display. Unlike traditional LCDs, this one lacks back light units (BLUs), relying instead on ambient light to let you see what you’re doing. With the BLUs taken out, you can see right through the display to whatever’s beyond – your back yard, for example. Never fear that the panel becomes useless after dark, though. It includes a special transparent BLU that acts as a light when the other lights go out.

Also, since the bulk of the power drawn by a traditional LCD display goes to the BLUs, the Smart Window uses about a tenth the electricity of a normal LCD (when the transparent BLU is off, anyway). The panel is one-way, meaning that people who walk by the outside will only see a mirror, and won’t be able to see what you’re looking at.

Not much is known about the Smart Window’s pricing or availability. Reports coming out of CES are that it is headed for mass production soon, though, so look for this amazing technology to start showing up by the end of the year. In the meantime, take a look at the video below (courtesy of MobileNations), and let us know what you think in the comments.

Apple to bid for Premier League coverage?

2012-01-06T22:46:00.000-08:00

Rumours surfaced late last night, (4th Jan), that Apple are showing an interest in fighting for the rights for the next set of Premier League games.

The billion pound battle for the tender may be hotting up as Apple, and possibly Google, join the dead bidding certs of Sky, ESPN and Middle East network Al Jazeera.

The rights for the Premier League coverage is hotly contested, unlike other sporting events which are in decline, the FA accepted a 30% drop on the FA Cup and England 2 year ITV deal.

The tender goes out before the end of the season, and if Apple were successful, it would surely help to establish their latest Apple TV venture. ITNEWSER

A group of hackers Teampoison

2011-12-03T01:01:00.001-08:00

A group of hackers who have identified themselves as 'Teampoison' have posted more than 100 email addresses and login details that they claim to have extracted from a United Nations database.

Many of the released emails appear to belong to members of the United Nations Development Programme, (UNDP). The details were posted on the website Pastebin under the Teampoison logo.

A spokeswoman for the UNDP said the agency believed "an old server which contains old data" had been targeted.

"The UNDP found [the] compromised server and took it offline," said Sausan Ghosheh.

"The server goes back to 2007. There are no active passwords listed for those accounts.

"Please note that UNDP.org was not compromised."

iOS-5 battery fix here- and more fuel for Apple rumour mill

2011-11-12T06:19:00.001-08:00

Apple surprised users this week by delivering its battery-life-fixing update to iOS 5 sooner than expected.
The update arrived a little more than a week after Apple first acknowledged that some users were, in fact, running into problems with battery life after upgrading to the newer version of iOS. Apple then promised to deliver a software update to fix the issue, which the company said would be here "in a few weeks."
Instead the update came just eight days later, on both iTunes and as the first over-the-air update on devices--a feature that was added as part of iOS 5.
Besides tackling the battery-life issue (or maybe not tackling it), iOS 5.0.1 brings multitasking gestures to owners of the original iPad, fixes a security issue for iPad 2 users with a Smart Cover, and brings an improved iPhone 4S dictation feature to Australian users (CNET)

Row behind scenes at C.O.D. Modern Warfare 3

2011-11-08T05:19:00.000-08:00

The latest in the Call of Duty video games went on sale in the UK at midnight last night with over 500 stores holding special release openings.

Modern Warfare 3 follows on from events in it's predecessor. Players become special forces in the bid to stop a Russian invasion of the U.S.A and Europe.

The latest campaign is set across England, France, Germany, Africa, India and the Middle East.

Behind the scenes there is a real war going on after Activision fired the founders of Infinity Ward, the creators of the C.O.D. series, after they negotiated with rivals whilst under contract.

Jason West and Vincent Zampella were later described by Activision as 'insubordinate and self-serving schemers'. The two have sued Activision for unpaid royalty payments who have counter sued accusing the pair of holding secret talks with Electronic Arts.

The duo have have since set up a new studio, Respawn Entertainment, and have signed a deal with E.A. for publishing and distribution rights.

Activision bought another of it's teams, Sledgehammer Games, to help the remaining Infinity Ward members to complete Modern Warfare 3 which is expected to hit record sales.

The trial is part of a long term initiative which hopes to see the whole of London offering free net browsing in the near future.

Nokia has, so far, been the largest project of this nature and the firm plans to offer a fully fledged free Wi-Fi service in 2012 if this two month trial proves a success.
