In perhaps the biggest game of the year, Inter Milan travels to Barcelona to face the Champions League champs at the Camp Nou. And, fortunately, Inter Milan gets to take a plane rather than in endure a 14-hour two-day bus trip as Barcelona did in the first match.

With Inter Milan winning the first match 3-1, Barcelona will need at least two goals to advance to the final at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid on May 22.

Inter Milan will be without Wesley Sneijder, as he suffered a muscle strain in Inter's Serie A match versus Atalanta. Barcelona will be a little bit happy about this, as Sneijder as been on a tear for Inter. However, you never know what tricks Mourinho has up his sleeve, and Sneijder might make a miraculous recovery and play in the match.

DirtyTackle: Speaking of MLS, after playing against teams like Man United and Chelsea, is it hard to get motivated for a game against, say, FC Dallas?

Landon: Well, there’s – motivation is inside each person. So a lot of people think that because you play Man U or because you play in a World Cup or whatever that’s where you get your motivation. If that’s what you’re waiting for to get your motivation, then you’re not gonna make it as an athlete. My motivation comes from inside, to perform the way that I know that I can perform, whether I’m playing a scrimmage against UCLA, against Houston, in LA, or Man United, or England in the World Cup. For me it’s all the same, so that’s, uh, that’s a non-issue.

I am 30 and have always had interest in the sport of soccer, having played kickball on and off since childhood, but am interested in learning a more professional approach and possibly join a league.

After this new and interesting running experience, I returned to the comfort of my usual training environment — the racketball court. This small, white, enclosed area has become an essential part of my training over the years, especially during New Jersey winters. All I need is a ball and my iPod and I can entertain myself in there for hours. As much as I’d love to be able to train in the sunshine on pristine grass fields, I really enjoy having to find new and interesting ways to train and play during the winter. I’ve kicked around in parking garages, school blacktops, parking lots, even the 8-by-6 foot free area of my basement.

Last week I got email from a parent / coach. He and his son were watching the SoccerU series together, session by session and working on all the technical skills at home. He was amazed at the level of improvement in his son’s skills. Even his coaches had commented at his club. He started to question whether or not he should move his son to a different club. He knew there was a “better ranked” club about an hour away from his home town and thought that might help his son. What he didn’t realize is that HIS efforts, away from the structured practice, were the reason why his son was improving. My response included many of the points below.

What sort of things do you do, specifically, to work on the strategic aspects of your game?

I’ve always been a fan of the sport. I watch a lot of soccer. I watch Premier League, La Liga, M.L.S. games whenever they’re on. I’m always watching. Watching players that play my position. Players like Xavi and Iniesta, those guys at Barcelona. Their movement is unbelievable. I think if you look in the Confederations Cup, Spain probably did the least running of any team in the tournament. Their movement on and off the ball is so good.

I try to watch my own games when I can. I will sit around on a Sunday after a game and watch the tape. Look at things I’ve done well and look at things I haven’t done so well. You can always learn from your own game as well as watching the players who are the best in the world.

How important was it for you to watch the game and develop the strategic knowledge to play at a high level? When did that kick in for you?

I think growing up, it forced me to think the game a little bit more because I was never the biggest, I was never the tallest, I was never the fastest. I was always a player that was technically gifted, but if forced me playing against those guys and to show well, that I had to really think the game and outsmart your opponent. Put yourself in a position that you can show well and impact the game without being the biggest and the fastest.

Obviously, as I’ve matured physically, I had that aspect to my game. Probably my second year of college, things started to click a little bit more for me and that is when I ended up leaving and going to Sunderland and being in that environment. Then, coming back to Houston under Dominic Kinnear and John Spencer I really feel like in the last four years, my game is at a whole new level than when I first came to M.L.S.

LA Missed Dema Kovalenko

Sadly he missed the MLS Cup final with what I hear was a viral infection. There's a nice piece about him in the NY Times:

But Kovalenko strolls into the Galaxy’s locker room with a not-so-menacing 12-pound Lhasa apso named Bentley tucked under his arm.

The presence of Bentley, who responds only to commands in Russian, comes with the permission of the team’s coach, Bruce Arena, and the blessing of the equipment manager, Raul Vargas, who had a nameplate made for him.

The dog is so dear to Kovalenko that he placed Bentley under his seat last winter when he flew to Ukraine to visit his family. Just hearing his name turns a pit bull of a player into a pussycat.
