Endemics of Anguilla

Anguilla´s fascinating environment is again brought into focus with the release of the island´s first stamp issue for 2010, “ENDEMICS OF ANGUILLA”. The Anguilla Philatelic Bureau in conjunction with the Anguilla Stamp Advisory Committee (ASAC) has undertaken to document three of the island´s endemic species on its postage stamps.

These are: Anguilla Bush (Rondeletia anguillenis)’ Little Scrub Island Ground Lizard (Amevia corax) and the Sombrero Island Ground Lizard (Ameiva corvinea). With growing global emphasis being placed on conservation of the earth´s fragile environment, it is timely that specific attention is being paid in sensitizing our community to the island´s little known endemic species of flora and fauna through the medium of the postage stamp.

The introduction of this stamp issue is intended both to educate the public regarding the existence of these creatures and their importance to human existence as well as create a greater awareness of the need to conserve and protect ‘all creatures’ great and small´.

Little Scrub Island Ground Lizard (Ameiva corax).

This primarily dark coloured reptile is found through out Little Scrub island but is concentrated in two main areas.

The male is slightly larger than the female and grows to approximately five inches from head to body while the female attains the length of about four inches. The tails of both males and females are twice as long as their bodies. The Ameiva corax ranges in colour from slate grey to black usually without any discernable pattern’ however a few individuals may exhibit faint remnants of stripes and spots. Little Scrub supports scares prey for the lizards who feed mainly on birds´ eggs during the nesting season’ flowering cactus and scavenge for bait left by fishermen.

Sombrero Island Ground Lizard (Ameiva corvina).

The Sombrero Island ground lizard at a glance resembles the Scrub Island Lizard. These are also slate grey to black in colour.

The Sombrero lizard is different in that the body is elongated with a pointed head which is not well defined from the body with a long tail.

The males grow to a maximum of five inches from head to base of the tail and the females are slightly smaller. Ameiva corvina is found throughout the island but are concentrated near the island´s lighthouse because of a ready source of food for scavenging from the lighthouse keepers who until recently lived on the island.

Pink Orchid (Epidendrum kraenzlinii bello).

This exotic wild orchid is one of two known to grow on Anguilla. The plant tends to exist parasitically but can also be found growing on rock pavement. Its delicate slender stalk bears several lovely, deep rose coloured flowers at the top.

The Pink Orchid is found sparsely on the eastern end of Anguilla but has a greater concentration on the south centre of the island. This miniature plant is presently under threat of extinction due to Tourism related development including large resorts and gulf course projects.

Anguilla Bush (Rondeletia anguillensis).

Anguilla´s lone endemic plant, Rondeletia anguillensis is a small stiff shrub with miniature green leaves and pink trumpet shaped flowers. The Anguilla Bush seldom grows over three feet tall and eek out an existence in small holes found in limestone pavements.

The shrub grows predominantly in the eastern region of Anguilla but is increasingly threatened by habitat loss and landscape fragmentation due to Tourism driven development. Studies have been made on the distribution of Rondeletia anguillensis by the island´s Department of Environment (DOE) for future conservation planning decisions.

Traditional philately is the study of the technical aspects of stamp production and stamp identification, including:

* The initial stamp design process;
* The paper used (wove, laid, etc., and including watermarks);
* The method of printing (engraving, typography, etc.);
* The gum;
* The method of separation (perforation, rouletting);
* Any overprints on the stamp;
* Any security markings, underprints or perforated initials ("perfins"); and,
* The study of philatelic fakes and forgeries.

Thematic philately, also known as topical philately, is the study of what is depicted on the stamps. There are hundreds of popular subjects, such as birds on stamps, and ships, poets, presidents, monarchs, maps, aircraft, space craft, sports and insects on stamps. Interesting aspects of topical philately include design mistakes and alterations, for instance, the recent editing out of cigarettes from the pictures used for United States stamps, and the stories of how particular images came to be used.

Postal history concentrates on the use of stamps on mail. It includes the study of postmarks, post offices, postal authorities, postal rates and regulations and the process by which letters are moved from sender to recipient, including routes and choice of conveyance. A classic example is the Pony Express, which was the fastest way to send letters across the United States during the few months that it operated. Covers that can be proved to have been sent by the Pony Express are highly prized by collectors.

Aerophilately is the branch of Postal history that specializes in the study of airmail. Philatelists have observed the development of mail transport by air from its beginning, and all aspects of airmail services have been extensively studied and documented by specialists.

Postal stationery includes stamped envelopes, postal cards, letter sheets, aérogrammes (air letter sheets) and wrappers, most of which have an embossed or imprinted stamp or indicia indicating the prepayment of postage.

Cinderella philately is the study of objects that look like stamps, but aren't postal stamps. Examples include Easter Seals, Christmas Seals, propaganda labels, and so forth.

Philatelic literature documents the results of philatelic study and includes thousands of books and periodicals.

Revenue philately is the study of stamps used to collect taxes or fees on such things as, legal documents, court fees, receipts, tobacco, alcoholic drinks, drugs and medicines, playing cards, hunting licenses and newspapers.

Maximaphily is the study of Maximum Cards. Maximum Cards can be defined as a picture post card with postage stamp on the same theme and a cancellation, with a maximum concordance between all three.

This is a list of postage stamps that are especially notable in some way, often due to antiquity or a postage stamp error.

90th anniversary of HRH Grand-Duke Jean .

Grand Duke Jean has served His country as Chief of State for 36 years and can, on the occasion of His 90th birthday, reflect on a full career, rich in emotions and memories.

Born on 5 January 1921 at Berg Castle and given the name Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d’Aviano of Luxembourg, He is the eldest son of the Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg and Prince Felix of Bourbon Parma.

After finishing His primary and secondary studies in Luxembourg, He completed His studies at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire County in England. On 5 January 1939, upon reaching the age of majority, He was named the Grand Duke heir apparent. After the invasion of the Grand Duchy on 10 May 1940 by German Nazi troops, He left Luxembourg with His family to seek refuge, first in France and Portugal, later in the United States and Canada. After studying law and political science at Laval University (Canada), He underwent military training at Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom, before enlisting as a volunteer in the Irish Guards Regiment.

On 11 June 1944 He landed near Bayeux in Normandy where He served as a captain in the 32nd Brigade of the Guards Armoured Division. He took part in the Battle of Caen and entered Brussels on 3 September. One week later, on 10 September 1944, He returned to Luxembourg alongside His father, Prince Felix. Named Lieutenant-Representative on 28 April 1961, He succeeded his mother the Grand Duchess Charlotte on 12 November 1964. On the same day He was name General of the Luxembourg Army.

On 9 April 1953, He married Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium. Five children were born from this union: Princess Marie-Astrid, Prince Henri, Prince Jean, Princess Margaretha, and Prince Guillaume. On 7 October 2000, Grand Duke Jean abdicated in favour of His eldest son Henri.

What can I collect?

Mint - stamps (unused stamps) and used stamps can be collected.

These can be collected year-wise , nation-wise or theme-wise.

To make this easier and more attractive to beginners, philatelist advise you to collect stamps according to a selection of your choice called a Thematic Collection.

Themes may be flowers, birds, animals, architecture, railways, monuments, Red Cross etc…

Definitive stamps and stationery can also be collected as a theme. The bottom line is that the collection unfolds various aspects of a theme like a story. Stamp collection can be broadly classified as:
1. General Collection: – Refers to the practice of collecting stamps from all countries on several subjects. There are no rigid rules in this. The main aim of this kind of collection is general knowledge.
2. Country collection: – Every general collector can grow into a country collector. One can choose one or more countries.
3. Thematic collections: – This refers to the collection of stamps on a theme, subject or topic. While large number of people collects only postage stamps there are quite a few who collect various other types of Philatelic items connected with postage stamps. They are:
1. First Day covers/Special Covers
2. Miniature sheets
3. Souvenir sheets
4. Souvenir cards
5. Maxim Cards
6. Stamp Booklets, coil stamps
7. Postage due labels
8. Collectors pack, thematic packs, souvenir packs

11. Cancellations on cards and on other items.Types of Stamps. There are commemorative and definitive stamps. Commemorative stamps are issued, as the name suggests, to commemorate important events, prominent personalities in various fields, aspects of nature, beautiful or rare flora and fauna, environmental issues, agricultural activities, games national/international issues, etc. These stamps are only available at Philatelic Bureaux and counters or under the Philatelic Deposit Account Scheme. They are printed in limited quantities. Definitive stamps on the other hand, are used for day – to - day postal mailing purposes and are available in various ascending denominations from 20 paisa onwards at all postal counters.
How do I collect used stamps? Do not throw away letters that you receive. You can collect used up stamps through them. These can be detached delicately from the postal articles. Rinse in a shallow dish of water, using your hands or a soft brush. Carefully dry them in a dark place as the ultra violet rays of sunlight can damage the colors. It is also valuable to retain stamps along with the envelopes on which they are pasted as this authenticates their use.
Where can I get stamps? Mint stamps are available at Philatelic Bureaux and Counters in the designated post offices, details of which will be available at your nearest Head Post Office. You may like to get in touch with local philatelists who can perhaps guide your interest. Make pen – friends both in the country and abroad -you will be surprised at the number of people who share your interest.
How can I get and use albums? Albums are available at leading Book and Stationery stores and with philatelists. Pasting stamps ruins them. Use paper hinges or “havids” to place them in an album. Plastic strip albums are now available and are ideal to use for beginners. Handle stamps with pincers to avoid smudging or damaging them in any way with your fingers. Luxembourg, 25th anniversary of the Schengen Accord.

The Schengen convention promotes the opening of borders between the signatory countries. The territory thus created is commonly called the “Schengen space”, “Schengen” from the name of the village of Schengen, a town on the border between Germany, Luxembourg and France where the accord was signed between the five States of the era.

The Federal Republic of Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands signed on 14 June 1985 at Schengen, on board the pleasure yacht MS “Princesse Marie-Astrid”, an accord relating to the gradual suppression of controls on people traveling across borders between the contracting parties.

Following this accord, the Schengen space was institutionalised on a European scale by the Amsterdam Treaty of 1997. “Traité de Lisbonne” The Lisbon Treaty, ratified in 2008, modified the legal rules relating to the Schengen space and reinforced the notion of a “space of liberty, security and justice”.

The signatory countries have a common policy as it relates to visas and have strengthened border controls with countries outside the space. Even though there is, in theory, no longer any internal border controls in the Schengen space, they can be put back in place temporarily if necessary to maintain public order or national security. From now on, foreign citizens who have a long-term visa for one of the member countries can travel freely throughout the zone.

Luxembourg, A Touristic Series: Eisch Valley.

Along the banks of the Eisch, the vegetation is, in part, very natural, almost wild. The 37 km national path of the Valley of the Seven Castles follows the winding valley of the Eisch which is rich in cultural treasures. Far from the principal motorways, these country roads and peaceful forest paths delight pedestrians and cyclists.

At one time this valley represented, thanks to its production of steel, a thriving site well before the blast furnaces of the Red Earth area belched their smoke. Today, nature once again dominates the area. But if one looks closely, one can still discover traces of this era, such as the many caves in which the families of coal miners lived. Today, the Eisch Valley is part of the largest environmental protection zone in Luxembourg.

Most of the ancient noble residences, such as the fortified castle of Hollenfels or the baroque castle of Ansembourg with its French garden and its mythological avenue, provide us with a glimpse of a past era. Others, such as the ruins of the castle of Koerich, thanks to their characteristic silhouette, confer a picturesque aspect to this village. Celebrities such as Yolande of Vianden, daughter of the Count of Vianden, the French author Victor Hugo and the Belgian poet Amélie Picard, have appreciated the idyllic setting of the Eisch valley.

In years gone by, the Eisch Valley included 7 castles (Fockeschlass and Gréiveschlass in Koerich, the castles of Septfontaines and of Hollenfels, the old and the new castles in Ansembourg and the castle of Mersch), which, from about 1900, earned it the name “Valley of 7 Castles”.

Fockeschlass in Koerich has completely disappeared, while Gréiweschlass dating from before the 12th century and transformed in the 14th and 16th centuries remains one of the most impressive ruins of a castle in the country. The ruins, today the property of the State, were classified as an historic monument in 1938.

The castle of Septfontaines, situated on a spur above the village, dates from the 12th century. Transformed and enlarged around 1600, it was destroyed by a fire in 1779. Classified as an historic monument in 1937, today it is privately owned and surrounds a modern home.

The castle of Hollenfels dates from the 14th century, is known for its dungeon (1380) and its sumptuous Gothic rooms. The dungeon received an impressive new roof in 1973 and is part of the Ecological Centre of the National Youth Service which has occupied the site since the 1970s.

The old castle of Ansembourg, a true eagle’s nest, was mentioned for the first time in 1135. The castle still belongs to the family of Marchant and Ansembourg, former master ironworkers, ennobled in the 18th century.

The new castle of Ansembourg, situated in the valley, was built by the master ironworker Thomas Bidart between 1639 and 1647 and enlarged by Lambert-Joseph de Marchant in the 18th century. It was him who created the magnificent French gardens and the sumptuous entry portal to the court of honour. Today, the castle serves as the regional centre of the Sukyo Mahikari religious community, originally from Japan. The castle and the gardens were classified as historic monuments in 1988.

The ancient dungeon of the Mersch castle houses today the offices of the communal administration.

It was mentioned for the first time in 1232. Destroyed and transformed several times between the 15th and the 18th centuries, the castle housed one of the first youth hostels in the country in the 1930s. In 1980, the castle of Mersch was classified as an historic monument.

Luxembourg, A Special Series Countdown 2010 Arnica Montana

Since the 1960s, more than 80% of wetlands and about 35% of grasslands have disappeared in Luxembourg. At the same time, the area occupied by orchards has been reduced by 58.5%. In the countryside, nearly 28.5% of hedges and rows of trees and more than half (-55%) of solitary trees have been eliminated.

Taking into account the acceleration of ecosystem destruction and species extinction, the countries present at the World Summit of the Earth in Johannesburg have decided to slow down in a significant manner the reduction of biodiversity.

The countries of Europe are involved even more: at the 5th ministerial conference “One environment for Europe” in Kiev in May 2003, the European ministers of the environment formally committed themselves to stop the loss of biodiversity.

Biodiversity is the foundation of all life. It offers protection, food, pharmaceutical products, and includes :

• genetic diversity of living beings;
• multiplicity of species;
• variety of ecosystems.

The engagement of Luxembourg in this context is confirmed by its official participation in the “Countdown 2010” initiative, an international partnership under the aegis of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and including governments, regional and local authorities as well as non-governmental organisations, with a goal of mobilising forces for the protection of biological diversity and also for raising public awareness.

The “Countdown 2010” initiative has a goal of ensuring that governments keep their promises.

“Countdown 2010” is a pan-European initiative which involves 53 States. It is a large alliance of primary players from all sectors (national and local governments and administrations, international organisations, NGOs and the private sector).

This is the objective that European leaders and many of the NGOs and institutions have set for themselves. The more interested people there are, the more species of flora and fauna that will be saved from extinction.

The official partners in Luxembourg are the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, the 21 communities of “Sicona-Ouest” (Intercommunal Syndicate of the West for the Conservation of Nature) and the “Fondation Hëllef fir d’Natur” Foundation.

Since 1982, the “Fondation Hëllef fir d’Natur” Foundation has acted definitively to protect biodiversity, the natural heritage of our regions, the natural space for fauna, flora, and Man. Up to 2010, the Foundation has been able to acquire 910 ha of nature reserves thanks to various benefactors.

The rehabilitation project for the pearl mussel in the “Our” River, and the restoration project of the arnica montana, are two of the concrete activities designed to fight the loss of biodiversity.

Luxembourg, The Shanghai 2010 Universal Exhibition

From 1st May to 31st October, 2010, the universal exhibition will welcome some 70 million visitors from around the world to a site of 5 square kilometres in Shanghai.

As part of this exhibition, which theme is “A better City, a better Life”, Luxembourg wants to highlight the actions of a small country in the group of nations involved.

The objective is to illustrate the concept of sustainable development throughout the pavilion.

To distinguish itself from the more than 200 pavilions in the exhibition and to highlight the specific identity of a country often called the “Green Heart of Europe”, the designers have imagined a quasi-monolithic sculptural form.

In Chinese, “Luxembourg” is pronounced “lùsên bâo”, which means “forest and fortress”. The Luxembourg pavilion wants to be an open fortress, bathed in green.

The architectural structure of the pavilion resembles intersecting ramparts with large openings leading to space which surrounds a kind of medieval tower.

The pavilion is, from its construction and its use of materials, an example of a sustainable city which respects the natural environment while offering modern conveniences.

The materials used are steel, wood, and glass, recyclable materials. The enclosing walls are cut by various translucent panels.

The energy concept of the pavilion is based on energy efficiency, the economies of energy and renewable energy.

Several large entryways and exits will allow a continuous flow of visitors. It will be necessary to handle almost 50,000 visitors per day.

On 14 February 1981, Prince Henri married Miss Maria Teresa Mestre whom he met at the University of Geneva.

Her Royal Highness Grand Duchess Maria Teresa was born on 22 March 1956 in Havana, Cuba. She is the daughter of José Antonio Mestre and Maria Teresa Batista-Falla de Mestre.

In 1980, Maria Teresa Mestre received her political science diploma from the University Institute of International Advanced Studies of the University of Geneva.

Since 10 June 1997, Her Royal Highness Grand Duchess has been a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the education of women and girls everywhere in the world. The president of several humanitarian foundations, she strongly supports all actions which give to women the means of being autonomous and to defend their rights. The Grand Duchess is also engaged in a large number of Luxembourg and foreign organisations.

Their Royal Highnesses have four sons and a daughter:
- Prince Guillaume, born on 11 November 1981
- Prince Félix, born on 03 June 1984
- Prince Louis, born on 03 August 1986
- Princess Alexandra, born on 16 February 1991
- Prince Sébastien, born on 16 April 1992

Prince Guillaume was born on 11 November 1981 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg and is the eldest son of Their Royal Highnesses Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. He did his primary studies at the Lorentzweiler school. He then attended Robert Schuman secondary school followed by the “Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil” in Switzerland where he obtained his French baccalaureate in 2001. After courses in international politics in England, the Prince continued studies in this area in Switzerland and France, taking care to participate in the great geopolitical events of our time. In 2005, he was able to assist in the “Millennium Conference” at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. Prince Guillaume obtained in June 2009 a diploma in Literature and Political Science. On 18 December 2000, Prince Guillaume was named officially the Grand Duke Heir Apparent.

From September 2001 until August 2002 he received officer training at the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy in Great Britain. In December 2002, he was sworn in as an officer in the Luxembourg army and the Prince currently has the rank of Major. Since the start of 2001, he has assumed the honorary presidency of the Board of Economic Development.

Prince Félix was born on 3 June 1984 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg. After his primary education at the Lorentzweiler school, he pursued his secondary studies at the Notre Dame (Sainte-Sophie) Private School of Luxembourg, then at the American School of Luxembourg. In 1998, he enrolled in the “Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil” at Villars-sur-Ollon. In 2003, he received his diploma marking the end of his secondary studies.

In 2003 he attended the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy in Great Britain where he distinguished himself as one of the best non-English officer candidates before having to terminate prematurely his studies at Sandhurst for reasons of health. His studies in political science, communication, and psychology brought the Prince to renowned schools in England and Belgium. Presently, Prince Félix works in the marketing and public relations department of a Swiss company specialising in event planning. Prince Félix has the rank of Chevalier of the Order of the Golden Lion of Nassau.

Prince Louis was born on 3 August 1986 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg. The Prince went to primary school in Lorentzweiler, to the Notre-Dame (Sainte-Sophie) private school, then to the American School of Luxembourg. He went to secondary school in Switzerland, at the “Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil” in Villars-sur-Ollon, where he graduated in June 2005. On 12 March 2006 Gabriel de Nassau, son of Prince Louis and Mademoiselle Tessy Antony, was born in Geneva. They were married on 29 September 2006. On 21 September 2007 Noah de Nassau was born at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital, the second child of Prince Louis and Madame Tessy de Nassau.

Princess Alexandra was born on 16 February 1991 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg. She is the only daughter of Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. Princess Alexandra went to primary school in Angelsberg and to secondary school at the French School of Luxembourg, where she received her baccalaureate in 2009. Her interests include learning foreign languages, science, sport, music and art.

Prince Sébastien was born on 16 April 1992 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg. He went to primary school at the Vauban school, then continued his studies at the St. Georges International School in Luxembourg. His favourite subjects are art and science.

Luxembourg, 25th Anniversary of the Death of H.R.H. Grand Duchess Charlotte (1896-1985).

Grand Duchess Charlotte was born on 23 January 1896 at Berg Castle.

She was the second daughter of Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Marie-Anne of Bragança. On 15 January 1919 she took the oath of office in front of a delegation from the Chamber of Deputies specially convened at Berg Castle.

On 6 November 1919, she married Prince Félix of Bourbon-Parma in Luxembourg. From this marriage were born six children: Jean (1921), Elisabeth (1922), Marie-Adélaïde (1924), Marie-Gabrielle (1925), Charles (1927) and Alix (1929).

World War II forced Grand Duchess Charlotte, her family, as well as the Government to leave the country to avoid the German troops.

From France, they had to leave by Spain and Portugal for the United States of America, Great Britain, and Canada. Together with the Government, the Grand Duchess worked for the recognition of the independence of Luxembourg. On 14 April 1945, she was finally able to return to a liberated Luxembourg.

After the war years, Grand Duchess Charlotte remained the symbol of unity for the Luxembourg people. She also continued to work on international recognition for Luxembourg. It was under her reign that State visits were no longer confined to neighbouring countries but were extended to include countries across the Atlantic. She was fully supportive of European unification.

On 12 November 1964, she abdicated in favour of her son Grand Duke Heir Apparent Jean. After 45 years of rule, she retired to Fischbach Castle. On 8 April 1970, Prince Félix died. Fifteen years later, on 9 July 1985, at the age of 89, Grand Duchess Charlotte permanently left her subjects..

Luxembourg, 10th Anniversary of the Accession to the Throne of H.R.H. Grand Duke Heir Apparent Henri.

7 October 2000 marks an important event in the history of the Grand Ducal family and of the entire country. Grand Duke Henri is the sixth sovereign of the dynasty since the accession of Adolphe of Nassau.

His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri, eldest son of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg, was born on 16 April 1955 at Betzdorf Castle (Luxembourg).

He went to secondary school in Luxembourg and France, where he successfully passed his baccalaureate in 1974. He then attended the University of Geneva (Switzerland), where he received a diploma in political science in 1980.

His Royal Highness has been involved in many informational and educational visits abroad, in Europe as well as the rest of the world. From 1978 to 1980, he had training courses with various companies in the United States. In his role as Honorary President of the Board of Economic Development founded in 1977, he has conducted numerous prospecting trips around the world to promote the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as a land worthy of investing in.

From 1980 to 1998, he was seated in the State Council, which allowed him to become familiar with the legislative processes of the country.

The Grand Duke ensures the patronage of numerous active associations in cultural, sporting, scientific and civic domains.
Thus, he assumes the High Patronage of Civil Defense. He is also an active member of the Mentor Foundation created under the patronage of the World Health Organisation.

The goal of this foundation is to prevent the use of drugs by adolescents.

Being interested in the protection of nature, the Grand Duke is President of the Galápagos Darwin Trust Luxembourg and is on the Presidency Council of the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galápagos Islands. In addition, he provides the High Patronage for the Hëllef fir d’Natur Foundation. The Grand Duke has been part of the International Olympic Committee since the February 1998 session that was held in Nagano, Japan.

Immersing yourself in a hook and forgetting everything around you. Not a lot of adults can stili do that, but its no probleni for.children. They can become engrossed in a book, especially when it s brought to life with gorgeous illustrations.

Gerda Dendooven and Kitty Crowther are both very good at illustrating books for chìldren and young adults.

They have some impressive achievements between them. De Post-La Poste brought Gerda and Kitty together to design a special issue - Nose in the Books.

Two artista who had to reach agreement on how to fili such a small piece of paper... a tough ask or naturai symbiosis?

LOTS IN COMMON.
The two illustrators and friends had wanted to work together on a Project for years. 'Nose in the Books' turned out to be just that project. Kitty Crowther is delighted with the end result, a blend of two differ-ent styles. 'I loved the postage stamps our illustrator colleague Tom Schamp had designed for De Post-La Poste and I was a bit jealous, I must admit. I was over the moon when De Post-La Poste proposed I design a postage stamp a few months later,' she smiles. 'We could finally get down to realising the dream of bringing together our two styles. I have huge admiration for her as an artist and a human being.

The bilingual partnership is unique in Beigium, where publishers would prefer to work with foreigners rather than looking at what is happening in the other pad of tte country, Yet Flemings and Walloons have a lot in common, if you asx certain type of humour and love of life.

Those are things I recognse the work of both Gerda and myself, al-though we othen rotally different ways.
GOOD SCHOOL FOR TWO EGOS.
Despite their stubborn characters. the two friends - who first met each other at a party tnrown oy tneir Dutch publisher ten years ago -quickly reached agreement on rhe style they would employ. 'Gerda works a lot with collages.

The cupboard is key to the design, exuding something intimate and secret. You can hide in there to read a book, for example.

The bird is a nod to De Post-La Poste. work on rather a big scale and in a rather graphical way. Kitty prefers a smaller scale, l'm an eternai doubter, whereas Kitty works faster, For me, the characters are typical of Kitty: disarming and sharp in a very sensitive way.

The animals are cut and pasted and refer to my work. Gerda is an unbeliev-able perfectionist, whereas I work intuitively.

The world s biggest five-yearly indoor plant event returns this year.

Over the past 200 years, thè Ghent Floralies have grown into one of the cultura! high points of the year, attracting visitors from through-out the globe.

This year, between 17 and 25 April, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the work of around 300 exhibitors and 24 world-class fiorai artists.

It has become a traditori for De Post-La Poste to issue special postage stamps to celebrate this event.

This year the Lychnis atrosanguinea (Mullein Pink) and the Nicotiana alata (winged tobacco) are depicted on the special issue.

UNIQUE CREATION
It's highly probable that we'll bump into retired postman and proud owner of an almost complete Ghent Floralies collection Pierre De Braekeleir on thè event's opening day. 'I started my Ghent Floralies collection in 1970 when my landlord gave me free passes to that year's exhibition.

Since then, l've tried to get my hands on every postai product relating to the Floralies. I have ali the stamps since thè first series in 1955 and a large number of postmarks, including a cancellation from 1933.

My favourite item is something I made myself and no one else has,' he reveals. 'I stuck a postage stamp to my VIP invitations from thè 2005 event and had it postmarked at the post office.

A unique creation of my own that I am very proud of! Wfiat I would like to have in my collection is a badge like thè staff used to wear.' Pierre is a big nature-lover. 'I always take my camera when I go for a walk and when I see a flower I don't know yet, I take a photo. I am a nature-lover/ he smiles. His big passion are orchids.

They are the main reason I visit the Floralies, but I also enjoy thè new trends in flower arrangement and thè presentation of the plants. Especìally if there are water gardens. I love that!'

The Ghent postage stamp club "Het Volk" is responsible for first-day cancellation of the Floralies postage stamps at thè city's botanical gardens. Pierre will be exhibiting his collection on that day.
It's a first for him and the club. I'm working hard to get my stuff together and make a presentation on six or seven panels.

It's a lot of effort, especially if you want to show a bit of everything,1 says Pierre. 'But it is definitively not my intention to enter it into competitions. My other hobby - here at home they cali it an obsession (smilìng) - takes up too much of my time for that. ' Pierre is secretary of thè "Koninklijke Kynologische Maatschappij der Vlaanderen", an association of dog-lovers that organises one of thè biggest dog shows in Flanders.

The biennial Flanders Dog, which was scheduled for thè end of February this year.

THE FLORALIES IN FIGURES
The "Maatschappij voor Landbouw en Kruidkunde" was founded in Ghent on 10 October 1808. Ite first show took piace in thè "Au Jardin de Frascati "hostel.
The first major five-yearly show, later calieri thè Floralies, was held in 1839. The Ghent Floralies have been held at Flanders Expo since 1990.

Aland, Europa, Fuli speed with laser sailboat.

This year's My Stamp issue offers a piece of news - a gummed sheet holding eight stamps.

The stamp is an action-packed photo of a boy sai/ing a Laser Radia, Several yacht clubs are registered in Aland, two of which are Mariehamns seglarfòrening r.f. (sailing club MSF) and Alands segelsàllskap r.f. (yachting club ASS).

Botri clubs are located in Marieharnn and have a long history: MSF was founded in 1917 and ASS in 1897.

In the stamp by photographer Daniel Eriksson we see a Laser Radiai.

The Laser boats come in three variants: 4.7, Radiai and Standard. A Radiai has the same hull as a Standard but a smaller mast and sail, and it is therefore better suited for young sailors.

The Laser Radiai is a small singlehanded dinghy with a mainsail area of 5.76 m2.

As of this year, the My Stamps issue will be changed from a self-adhesive booklet to a gummed sheet of eight stamps. yqu can stili order your own self-designed stamps at www.posten.ax.

Aland, the mail must be delivered!

Àland mail farmers and farmhands alike had to be ready when the coach horn sounded.

They knew then that it was time to carry the mail to the next farm, day or night. A stamp appearing in June focuses on the conveyance of mail.

The mail route across Àland was established in 1638. Until the end of the 19th century, the conveyance of mail across Aland bore thè stamp of the postai reform.

The mail was conveyed in relays between farmers living at a certain distance from one another along the mail route.

Mail farmers had many responsibilities and, in return, they were exempted from some of the taxes to the Crown.

They were required to be able to read and write; another requirement was that each farmer must keep two farmhands to help him.

The mail must be carried in ali weathers and at ali times.

During the almost three hundred year period of mail conveyance across land and sea, the transportation technique never changed.

The mail farmers rowed, sailed and pulled their boats regardless of weather conditions.

At thè end of the 1800s, ships that were better equipped to cut through the ice carne into use and a more regular service was introduced.

The mail farmers were no longer needed, and the last mail rota left from Vardò to Kumlinge on 31 December 1910.

Belgium, 25 Years of Philatelic Highlights.

25 years ago, painter Andre Buzin could never have imagined his birds would be so successful. This special issue comprising five Belgian birds of prey honours the work of a gifted nature observer with a sharp pencil.

The wildlife artist was raised in an old mill in the middle of the countryside outside Namur. His father painted naturai landscapes as a pastime, so he grew up with painting and nature stili live in thè countryside in a small hamlet,' he says. 'My models - the birds - visit me. All of a sudden they are at the window while l'm drawing.

I base my work primarily on my own photos and sketches, taken on my many walks and observations of animals. Birds of prey continue to fascinate me, especially owls. With their large, round eyes, these night birds are an impressive sight.

He made his first ever postage stamps depicting thè national park of Garamba for what was then Zaire. When De Post-La Poste wanted to replace thè heraldic lion postage stamp series with a bird series, they got in touch. The pian was for the series to last ten years, but it's now 25 years later and there have been a hundred postage stamps,' he explains. 'I am completely free to choose my designs.

In the future I would like to design a set with water birds.' Besides birds, Buzin has also designed other wildlife postage stamp series for De Post-La Poste. 'In 1992 De Post-La Poste commissioned me to produce a butterfly series, I also designed a series depicting mammals native to thè Ardennes. Ali based on my own photos, because I am a real hunter of pictures,' he explains. 'I think people like my postage stamps because they provide them with a new perspective on their environment and give them plea-sure. I don't have any pretensions about changìng the world with my postage stamps but through my designs I do want to allow people to enjoy the simple things that do not cost anything and that you just have to look out of thè window to see.' he concludes.

His paintings are also admired by nature and art enthusiasts. 'I regularly participate in exhibitions, in galleries, at nature clubs and at philately clubs. I am also exhibiting originai paintings at Antverpia. I have room to hang about 20 small and large pieces and l'II try to be there in personasmuchaspossible. On 12 Aprii l'II certainly be present.' It's an ideai opportunity for fans of his work to admire his paintings and talk with the master himself.

Finland, the airship Graf Zeppelin lands at the Post Museum

The Post Museum will open the Graf Zeppelin - Colossus of the Skies exhibition on April 23, 2010. The exhibition consists of tales about the famous airship Graf Zeppelin's visit to Helsinki 80 years ago. The Graf Zeppelin was a pioneering aircraft in the beginning of the 20^th century. ToToday a Zeppelin visit in Helsinki could be compared to a visit of an international megastar.

It created a massive media frenzy and attracted a crowd numbering in the tens of thousands. The Zeppelin visit was honored with a new stamp, which, by accident, featured the most famous misprint in Finland, a rarity in the world. The exhibition runs until August 8, 2010.

The Graf Zeppelin - Colossus of the Skies exhibition features the planning of the airship's visit, travelling on board the airship, its operating principles, and key figures involved with the airship. Naturally, the tale of the Zeppelin overprint origin and misprint is included, as well as valuable philatelic Zeppelin collections. Some of the exhibition material has been borrowed from the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

The size of a modern ocean liner, the Graf Zeppelin was welcomed after thorough planning. The press gave townspeople advice on how to avoid hold-ups and panic. The airship was expected to land at Viikki Latokartano field. However, hard gusty winds prevented the landing. Some of the passengers on the Graf Zeppelin had planned to disembark in Helsinki and ten passengers waited to board the airship in Helsinki.

The Zeppelin Company received major income for carrying mail. Almost 8,500 Finnish letters and postcards were hoisted on board the Graf Zeppelin. The Finnish postal service had no time to print a totally new stamp; instead, "Zeppelin 1930" was printed over the already published 10-mark Lake Saimaa stamp. There were a total of 500 sheets printed. Due to human error, every 100-stamp sheet included one stamp featuring the text "Zeppelin 1830". Soon after the misprint was discovered, the postal services withdrew the stamps from the market.

In addition to Finnish, the exhibition is subtitled in Swedish and English. Expert lectures and briefings are also featured.

The Post Museum is located in the Helsinki General Post Office, Asema-aukio 5 H. The Museum is open Mon-Fri 10 am to 6 pm and Sat-Sun from noon to 5 pm.
