First Lady Michelle Obama is not coming to Philippines

The APEC will be help in the Philippines next week and this will gather all the leaders from Asia and Pacific Rim. Earlier President Vladimir Putin and Indonisia's President Wydodo said that they could not come. Now among the first ladies, Mrs. Obama is not coming but we don't know the reason why she is not coming.

Philippines has negotiate 14 nearby hotels to accommodate the entire delegates including their families who will accompany them next week. Kris Aquino and her sisters will be there to welcome the visitors and tour them in Intramuros.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr., director-general of the APEC 2015 National Organizing Committee, said "a good number" of the spouses of the leaders of APEC member-economies have already confirmed that they will be coming to the Philippines next week.

He said presidential sisters Kris Aquino, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, Pinky Aquino-Abellada and Viel Aquino-Dee will host a special luncheon on November 19 for the spouses of the leaders.

"The presidential sisters...are bringing the guests to Intramuros for them to have a feel of what the Philippines was before and how it has evolved," he told ANC's Headstart.

"Michelle Obama we understand unfortunately will not be coming...Not all but a good number (of the spouses) have (confirmed)."

Kris earlier said first ladies from Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Colombia have confirmed their attendance to the APEC luncheon that she and her sisters are organizing. She also took to Instagram to thank Derek Ramsay, Ogie Alcasid, Matteo Guidicelli, Angeline Quinto and Erik Santos for agreeing to be part of the APEC luncheon for the visiting first ladies.

Paynor said the Philippine government was able to clear 26 parking spaces for the planes of the APEC leaders.

He said many of the leaders will be bringing in large delegations, which means they will occupy entire hotels.

"We were able to squeeze all of them in 14 hotels," he said. He added that many of the leaders wanted to stay as close as possible to the venue.

Vice President Jejomar Binay will also have a role during the APEC summit, by welcoming state guests from Chile and Mexico.

Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada will have no formal participation in the event but was given an invite to the gala dinner.

Security of the APEC summit remains the biggest challenge for the Philippine government, Paynor said. "On the whole it is the country's responsibility, individually and collectively, to ensure that all of these guests, including the foreign ministers and trade ministers and members of their family up to the last delegate, that they will come here and do their job and leave safe.

All of us will have to be collectively responsible." "It is not just about issues but us, as a country, as a people. How do we show ourselves as hosts? We invite them and then embarrass them or insult them? For me, it is not proper," he added.

Miss Venezuela is Miss International 2015

Miss International 2015 was concluded yesterday and the winner is Miss Venezuela Edymar Martinez. Miss Honduras was named first runner-up. For the first time, a black from Africa was able to penetrate as second runner-up. As we could remember Tunisia almost won by placing first runners-up before. Third runners-up is Miss Vietnam. This is the highest placement for Vietnam in Miss International since they joined the said pageant. The fourth place is Miss USA.

Miss Philippines is in the top ten together with Mexico, Thailand, Brazil and UK. Miss Philippines also won a minor award as Best Dresser. No Miss Congeniality this year. Miss Japan is Best in National Costume. They also award the best candidate in each region like Miss International Asia which was won by Miss Korea and so on.

Miss Venezuela was seen as leading the pack since day one so most of the aficionados are happy except for some bitter fans who claimed that their favorite was robbed. She also won as best in swimwear. Many claimed that she got a nose job. Miss Honduras was really beautiful in my own observation. Actually the top ten are all gorgeous and anyone of them can be crowned as the winner. This is the 7th crown for Venezuela who is known to be the powerhouse of beauty pageants. Philippines has five crown.

Miss Philippines was so emotional during her speech that many fans said that it cost her the crown. Some said that she should have composed herself or she should have grace under pressure.

Overall as expected, the show was very long and boring. Anyway, it is the Miss International trademark but at least they crowned the most beautiful girl.

By the way they used the old version of the crown in the 80's and 90's which has no horses lol.

ALDUB: social media phenomenon

It is a surreal and wildly popular show which has smashed global social media records. But few outside the Philippines have even heard of the phenomenon called AlDub. What follows is everything you need to know about lip-synching, being in love with somebody you have never met and how to break records on Twitter.

What or who is 'AlDub'?

For several months, viewers across the Philippines have been tuning in to watch 'Eat Bulaga!', a popular afternoon variety show, which features a skit with a pair of lovers who have never met in the flesh.

On the show, their romance is conducted via a split screen and as it developed, obstacles after obstacle cropped up to prevent the onscreen duo from meeting.

'AlDub' is a play on the first names of Filipino actors Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza (who plays the character Yaya Dub on the show), both stars with huge followings on social media.

It all became too much for the multitudes of adoring fans, who began to take action on social media by lobbying for the couple to finally meet in person. Each week, an episode spawned multiple and hugely popular Twitter hashtags to this end.

"Brangelina has got nothing on AlDub, they are my favourite super power couple - I love them so much," gushed Filipino Twitter user Maria Joy Coloma, a fan from Cebu province. "When will AlDub ever overcome the odds and unite? That will be when my life becomes complete," lamented another Twitter user Desiree Lopez in the capital city of Manila.

And then they finally met...

On 24 October, fans got their wish and for the first time, finally got to see the couple meet - on the set of a huge charity concert celebrating the show's 36th anniversary. Thousands attended the event and in just one day, the hashtag #AlDubEBTamangPanahon (translation: AlDub, in the right time) drew more than 41 million tweets, smashing the previous Twitter record held by Brazil's 2014 Fifa World Cup defeat to Germany.

And it isn't just the local fans. US politicians and even alternative rock bands, have declared their love for the show and its young stars.

The formula for a phenomenon

TV host and blogger Daphne Osena Paez explains that their love story appealed to all sectors of Filipino society and was created by playing on a popular formula used in the Philippine entertainment industry.

"Actors and actresses are often paired up so fans hope they end up together in real life. But what's different about 'AlDub'... is that it wasn't just the creation of a TV network or movie production," she said.

Their pairing began on live TV when they started reacting to each other spontaneously within the Eat Bulaga variety show.

Now, she says, they are the most popular "love team" in the Philippines. But another key to their popularity is their ability to connect with ordinary people.

"They appear very down-to-earth," says BBC presenter Rico Hizon, who admits to being a huge fan of the series.

"I believe that one big reason they are so popular is because the actors are very humble despite their massive success - they keep thanking fans as well as everyone who supports their work.

And now for the lip-synching part

The Philippines is a musical country where the online art of Dubsmash has become a craze. Dubsmash allows social media users to lip-synch over catchy songs, speeches or film quotes, and is featured prominently on the show.

Skilful lip-synching was what propelled Maine Mendoza, who was already an internet celebrity and known as the "dubsmash queen", onto the show in the first place.

She began interacting via a split-screen with Alden and the rest is history. Amazingly, neither of the characters have any speaking lines on the show.

Instead, they express their adoration for each other by blending lines from popular love songs and movies.

Thanks to her role as Yaya Dub, Ms Mendoza has now become the third fastest-growing celebrity on Twitter, after US singers Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.

The secret power of trend-setting Filipinos

Twitter called it a "global phenomenon" after it most recently broke social media records.

However, one earlier hashtag which followed after a controversial episode that saw Yaya Dub almost marry another character, spawned 800,000 tweets in a day. Other regular hashtags related to the show, regularly draw millions of tweets.

"'AlDub' was a global phenomenon on Twitter and it shows how our platform, as the social soundtrack to TV, has really connected Filipinos who love a good love story," the site's Asia Pacific Vice President Rishi Jaitly told Philippine news portal Rappler.

"None of it was planned," adds Ms Paez. "It's not like the show hired social media experts to strategise a plan - they realised what they had: a new and younger social-media savvy audience.

" For many in the Philippines, the fact that the show broke a global social media record was no surprise.

Analysts say Filipinos are particularly social and community-centric. "There is often a strong connection between an individual and his community or home town," Ms Paez told the BBC.

The internet has become one of the most natural places for Filipinos to forge community.

Angel Locsin will not Play as Darna Anymore

Darna character, a Filipino Comic character which is equivalent to Wonder Woman in America is supposedlybe played by Angel Locsin in the Movie will no longer come true. Angel Locsin who prepare for years to play the character said she was injured and it will be hard for her to perform

As we could remember, she played it in Channel GMA 7 as a daily show or telenovela in 2005 and now since the right of Darna is bought by ABS-CBN, they want her to play the role in the movie. Darna was her launching project which made her popular. Darna was played by many actresses like Vilma Santos, Nanette Medved, Anjanette Abayari and the beautiful Marian Rivera.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE)– Angel Locsin will no longer star in the movie version of Darna under Star Cinema. In a statement, Kane Errol, Choa, head of ABS-CBN Corporate Communications, said that Angel had to bow out of the project after she suffered a disc bulge in her spine while training for the movie.

"It is with deep regret that we announce that ABS-CBN, Star Cinema, and Angel Locsin have mutually agreed that Angel will no longer do the “Darna” movie due to health reasons. "Because of her passion, dedication, and commitment to the project, she underwent various rigorous training regimens for two years.

Unfortunately, this led her to developing a disc bulge in her spine. "This then limits her from doing strenuous activities such as stunts, liftings, and the usage of harness, all of which will be required of her for the action scenes in the film.

Aside from that, she will need to undergo rehabilitation and treatment. "And so while we have envisioned her to do the iconic Filipino heroine, Angel’s health and safety are both our primary concern.

Hence, the decision. "Fans need not worry. They can still look forward to seeing her in a movie that she is currently shooting with Vilma Santos. Angel’s physical condition does not prevent her from finishing the said project. "Again, we sincerely thank Angel for her hard work and pray for her recovery." A replacement for Angel has yet to be announced by Star Cinema.

In an interview on Tonight with Boy Abunda, Monday, October 26, Angel believed that she suffered the disc bulge due to the many times she did her own stunts in her projects. "Pero hindi ko pinagsisihan kung ano mang injury ang nakuha ko noon kasi masaya ako na ginagawa iyon. Masaya ako ginagawa iyon kasi alam ko iyon ang nakakapagpasaya sa mga tao. Iyon din ang rason kung bakit ako nag-artista, to give happiness and inspiration," Angel said.

(But I'm not regretting whatever injury I suffered because Im very happy with what I'm doing. I'm very happy that I'm doing it because I know that's what makes people happy. That also the reason why I decided to be an actress.)

Angel admitted that her condition is very painful because there are times she cannot walk properly. She also shared that she was not able to walk for several days, which made her nervous and she was taken to the hospital after. Angel said that she is now doing therapy.

As for a possible operation, Angel said: "May pinaguusapan kami na operation na gagawin sa ibang bansa pero hindi ko pa masabi iyon ngayon Tito Boy kasi kailangan pa sa akin explain nung doctor. But right now dito sa Pilipinas, ang ginagawa ko pa rin ay therapy, iwas muna ako sa mga strenuous activities.

(We are talking about the possibility of an operation in another country but I cannot say much about it Tito Boy because the doctor has to explain it. But right now here in the Philippines, what I do is therapy and I avoid strenuous activities.)

Angel said that she had to tell about her condition because she believes that it is her responsibility to inform everyone why she had to back out of the project and that Darna has to start shooting. She also told everyone that she will just be resting for now. "Magpapagaling lang ako. Ayusin ko lang ang likod ko, magpapalakas ako. Malay natin soon, magawa ko uli ang mga fight scenes na gustung-gusto kong gawin and gagawin ko siya ulit sa future.Malay ninyo next year, ako na si Wonder Woman," she said.

(I will just rest for now. I will just fix my back, I will recover. You'll never know, I'll be able to do the fight scenes that I love to do and will do in the future. You'll never know, I might become Wonder Woman next year.)

Angel also said boyfriend Luis Manzano has been supportive of her condition as well as Governor Vilma Santos-Recto, who she will star in a movie with.

On Instagram, Angel posted another message to her followers.

"It was a painful and hard decision to make, but we had to prioritize my health and welfare. Because of that, despite the two year preparations and rigorous training, I regret to inform everyone that I can no longer play Darna :( Production has to start filming already, and my body is not in the right condition to do anything too physically strenuous. It is only fair for production as I don't want to be the cause of delay or problems because of my recurring back injury. Rest assured that I am still undergoing treatment so I can come back stronger and hopefully, be your superhero again :)

"Thank you ABS CBN for looking after what's best for me and my health, especially to Tita Malou Santos. In 2014, Angel announced that she was playing the iconic Filipina superhero under the direction of Erik Matti. In an interview with ABS-CBN, Angel said the movie would be one of the biggest projects Star Cinema has ever produced.

Parul Shah takes 3rd runner-up in Miss Grand International 2015

Philippines representative Parul Shah in Miss Grand International 2015 is third runner-up. She was the winner of Binibing Pilipinas Tourism in 2014 but was able to compete that year. She also won best in National Costume in Miss Grand International 2015. Binibining Pilipinas sent a congratulations messaged to Sha for winning 3rd runner up. The pageant was help in Bangkok, Thailand.

And I do believe that we could co-exist together if there is understanding, and when there is no power struggle and no one tries to be above another. I've learned this from my father, he thought me that with having humility and respect, peace can ultimately be achieved."

Sharon Cuneta reconciles with Piolo Pascual

Sharon Cuneta on Thursday night took to Facebook to share her feelings about her reconciliation with Piolo Pascual, whom she had a shaky relationship after the actor broke up with her daughter KC Concepcion.
"I was in my wheelchair amongst friends and I didn't see him (Pascual) coming," wrote Cuneta.

"He hugged me tight and when I looked at his face, I hugged him back so tight.

" The 49-year-old Cuneta, who has admitted to have said words against Pascual, went on to describe him as someone she had hurt and a "son" that she will continue to love.

Please know that mine was, too.

I think of your mama and feel very badly about how she must have felt, because she too, is a mother like me," she continued.

10 reasons why Filipinos should be grateful to President Ferdinand Marcos

I read this article in Inquirer and everything went back to 70's and 80's when the President was Marcos who served as the longest time after declaring martial Law. I can't tell you about 60's because I was born in the year 1969.

As an ordinary citizen of the Philippines I can tell you that in those years I only witness one president and there was no freedom of speech. The ambiance was full of fear and I saw dead bodies everyday in our city hall. Some of them are victims of human right violations. We were sacked twice by soldiers who were miss inform by envious people. This is the reason why I don't like Martial Law because most of the victims are innocent people. Mongering was strictly implemented by Marcos and if you said something against the government, you will be jailed or better yet you will be dead the next day.

There’s been too much talk about an apology from the Marcoses. Not enough about gratitude to the late dictator and his allies.

That’s probably why Bongbong Marcos wants Filipinos to forget about what happened to us during his father’s reign.

You can’t really blame him — the focus in media and social media has been on the abuses during Marcos’ 21 years in power.

In fact, there are reasons why we should be grateful to the dictator. Here are some of them:

Marcos taught us to disdain and reject bullies

Ferdinand Marcos was not the first, or the last, president to abuse his power. But, certainly, he set a seemingly unbreakable record. The nightmare of his 21 years in power still haunts us today, a powerful, constant reminder of a chapter in our history that must never be repeated. That’s worth something.

Marcos taught us to disdain leaders who flaunt their wealth.

To be fair, Marcos and Imelda did not invent wealth-flaunting. The elites have been doing that for generations well before he came to power. But the Marcoses certainly took the brazen display of extreme affluence, in the face of extreme poverty, to a new low. I mean how can how one justify owning 3,000 pairs of shoes and bragging about it?

Marcos taught us to be suspicious of leaders who acquire wealth.

Presidents who came after Marcos certainly ran into this problem. Yes, Philippine politics is still widely considered as an easy road to easy money, but too much greed is now generally accepted as being dangerous to one’s political career. And we have to give credit to Marcos for this, for making Filipinos extremely suspicious of political leaders who suddenly get rich.

Marcos taught us to disdain those who brazenly cheat in elections.

Now take note: I said “brazenly.” For I know, elections Philippine-style are still dirty and cheating-prone. But still, given our experience with Marcos, there’s a line, especially in national races, that I suspect candidates will not cross for fear of sparking a severe backlash.

Marcos taught us to be wary of leaders who say they want to make the Constitution better (and perhaps do away with that pesky rule about staying in office for only six years).

Funny how, for a people who love dance, we don’t trust politicians who want to do the cha-cha. This could be a problem later one when the country does need to make changes in the basic law of the land. But then again, after what Marcos did, Filipinos are rightfully suspicious of anyone wanting to fool around with laws meant to prevent power-hungry politicians. “One to sawa” dynasty, anyone?

Marcos showed us that there is a big difference between discipline and fear.

“Sa Ikauunlad ng Bayan, Disiplina ang Kailangan.” “For our nation to develop, we need discipline.” That was the regime’s slogan for Marcos’ New Society. It worked for a time, mainly because people knew that, by discipline, the dictator meant, “Shut up and submit, or else.” It got so bad that one U.S. official observed that the Philippines in the ‘70s and ‘80s had turned into a country of “40 million cowards and one SOB.” Well, Filipinos were willing to let that be the case only for so long.

Marcos showed that friendship with powerful world leaders is no guarantee that one could hold on to power indefinitely.

Oh, Marcos and Imelda look so happy and proud in photographs with Ronald and Nancy Reagan. They were friends after all. Reagan even sent his Vice President George H.W. Bush to Manila to praise Marcos’ “adherence to democratic principles.” A few years later, the dictator was gone. The Reagan White House finally realized he was a liability to U.S. interests.

Marcos taught us to be wary of leaders who try to glorify themselves in songs, slogans and gargantuan, if ugly, monuments.

I must confess that I was thrilled when Marcos imposed Martial Law. I was eight years old when it happened, and for a few weeks I didn’t have to go to school and there was nothing but cartoons on TV.

But then, once back in school, my schoolmates and I had to learn these new weird songs about the new order and how everything was great about the regime — and about Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos.

Think North Korea!

Nowadays, epal politicians who like having their names and pictures on billboards and public places can expect to be criticized and attacked. We can thank Marcos and Imelda for this. In many ways, the anti-epal mood is rooted in how Filipinos grew so disgusted with the Marcoses.

What can be more epal than having gigantic bust of yourself constructed along a major highway you named after yourself.

Marcos forced Filipinos to be creative –- in fighting back.
Only in the Philippines could yellow confetti become a symbol of protest. And nuns praying the rosary in front of tanks?

You just won’t find such an act of defiance in other places.

But even before the People Power Revolt, during the darkest days of dictatorship, Filipinos were already coming up with creative ways to defy the regime. Students at UP used to launch lightning rallies, in which they marched from one floor to another yelling slogans and waving banners and then quickly folding the banners away and dispersing before the cops showed up.

Even the artists dared try new things. Take my old boss and drinking buddy, the poet Pete Lacaba, who wrote a seemingly harmless, apolitical poem titled “Prometheus Unbound.” When read vertically, the first letter of every line said, “Marcos, Hitler, Diktador, Tuta” – the famous anti-dictatorship slogan, “Marcos, Hitler, Dictator, Puppet.”

Marcos made us laugh.

One thing became clear during the Marcos years: Even during dark times, Filipinos can still maintain a healthy sense of humor.

How can one not laugh at Marcos and Imelda’s antics?

The first time I met Imelda in person was when the UP Collegian staff interviewed her at the Manila Hotel in 1984. The highlight of the meeting was when Imelda explained her theory of cosmic rays from outer space that she said would protect the country.

I distinctly remember a classic during one of the rallies after Ninoy’s assassination and Marcos’ face often looked swollen as he reportedly battled lupus. The protest poster read: “Mamaga sana ang mukha ng nagpapatay kay Ninoy.” “I hope whoever had Ninoy killed gets a swollen face” (Well, it’s funnier in Tagalog.)

And without Marcos, what would have happened to Willie Nepomuceno, undoubtedly one of the most talented Filipino humorists ever? He was so good with his Marcos impersonation, that during the critical hours of the People Power Revolt, when the dictator appeared on TV to prove he was still in charge, there were those who believed it was a ploy – with the popular comedian in the starring role.

Of course, Willie Nepomuceno’s career faced a crisis when Marcos was kicked out of the country, and later died. But he quickly bounced back, doing other politicos, including former Presidents Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada.

Fortunately, like the late tyrant, Willie Nepomuceno did not intend to die.

That’s what Marcos once declared: “I do not intend to die.” His family and supporters apparently understood that to mean he does not want to be buried, too. That’s why they’re keeping him in a refrigerated vault.

In a way, Marcos was right. He’s back. His son and his allies want us to forget what his regime did.

Unfortunately for Bongbong Marcos & Co., there are many of us who don’t want to forget and who say: #NeverAgain.

Miss World Philippines 2015 is Hillarie Danielle Parungao

Last night I watched Hillarie Danielle Parungao, she is the country's representative to the Miss World pageant to be held on December 19 in Sanya, China. Last year winner Valerie Weigmann crowned her. Philippines has one winner of Miss World courtesy of Miss Megan Young.

Hillarie Danielle Parungao was crowned Miss World Philippines 2015 at the Theater at Solaire on Sunday, October 18.

Hillarie, who hails from Nueva Vizcaya, succeeded last year's winner Valerie Weigmann. Hillarie will represent the country in the Miss World pageant in Sanya, China on December 19.

Clinton made $3.15 million in 2013 alone from speaking to firms like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and UBS, according to the list her campaign released of her speaking fees.

While Clinton has given paid speeches to many groups, Wall Street banks and investment houses made up a third of her speech income.

She even made more money speaking to UBS and Goldman Sachs than her husband Bill did. Goldman Sachs in New York paid Bill $200,000 for a speech in June 2013 and Hillary $225,000 for a speech in October of that year.

Clinton's Wall Street ties likely to be debate issue

"If the other candidates want to make this an issue, they've got plenty of material," says Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

Sabato predicts O'Malley or Jim Webb are more likely to go negative on Clinton in the CNN debate Tuesday, but even Bernie Sanders may be able to take a sideswipe when it comes to Wall Street.

Sanders has been outspoken that the big banks are still "too big to fail" and should be broken up.

Clinton's anti-Wall Street policies stop far short of that, with proposals to tax short-term trading and impose a "risk fee" on big banks with assets over $50 billion.

Wall Street's reaction to her plan to regulation big banks was mostly a sigh of relief.

"We continue to believe Clinton would be one of the better candidates for financial firms," one analyst wrote.

Wall Street has been a top supporter of Clinton's career

As a former senator from New York, it is not surprising that Hillary Clinton would have a close connection to the financial world. But Wall Street continues to be a big contributor to her political career.

In her 2008 run for president, JPMorgan (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS), Citigroup (C)and Morgan Stanley (MS)employees were among her top campaign contributors, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Tabulating campaign contributions for her entire senate political career shows that four of the top five her contributors are Wall Street banks (Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley).

In contrast, Sander's career campaign contribution list is almost entirely made up of union groups.

Republicans likely to have even more Wall Street ties

Clinton has tried to re-cast herself in this campaign. She shunned Manhattan for her campaign headquarters, opting to locate in hip Brooklyn.

She also did not list out where her speaking fees came from on her 2014 tax return, although she made about the same overall for speeches -- around $10 million -- as she did in 2013.

Still, her ties to big banks could be a problem in the Democratic primary, making it more difficult for her to appeal to the far left of her party. But if she becomes the Democratic candidate, her banking connections probably won't be as big of a deal on Election Day.

"The GOP candidate is likely to have even more time with, and donations from, Wall Street," says Sabato.

Miss Tourism International Rizzini Alexis Gomez died because of lung cancer. She is 25 years old.

Former beauty queen Rizzini Alexis Gomez passed away on Tuesday at the age of 25 due to lung cancer.

She is the daughter of former Alaska guard and University of Cebu coach Roehl Gomez, who confirmed the news to friends in the basketball community.

The younger Gomez was named Miss Tourism during the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012 grand coronation night before winning the Miss Tourism International title that year.

Later, she served as muse for Alaska for the PBA's opening ceremonies in 2013. Shortly afterwards, she was diagnosed with cancer.

Through former Roehl's former teammate Jojo Lastimosa, PBA stars came together last week for a benefit game in part to help out with her medical bills.

Lastimosa's wife Butchik told GMA News Online that Rizzini was brought to the intensive care unit on Monday. They received sad news of her demise in the morning.

Rizzini's ordeal came as a surprise to those close to her family.

"Parang aggressive yung cancer ni Rizzi, it spread fast," said Butchik, who added that the beauty queen had just turned 25 last August.

In 2012, Rizzini was featured on Saksi after her victory in the international pageant.

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Tuesday said she will run for president in the 2016 elections.

Asked by reporters if she will file her certificate of candidacy for the presidency this week, Santiago answered a simple “yes.”

Santiago said the Philippines will be a “much better country” if she will become president in the “near future.”

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) – Rodrigo Duterte says he will not run for president in the 2016 elections. Ending weeks of speculation, he announced this during a press conference in Davao City on Monday afternoon, October 12.

This is the second press conference he has called to confirm he is not seeking the presidency.
It comes weeks after telling supporters that he would do "soul-searching" in order to come up with a final decision on his 2016 plans.

He also expressed his desire to bow out of public life – but only if his daughter Sara will agree to run for mayor of Davao City again.

“The country does not need me. I find no need for it (the presidency),” Duterte said tersely inside a jampacked room at the Grand Men Seng Hotel.

People came to the press conference – called only Monday morning – expecting him to actually announce his presidential bid.

“I am sorry to disappoint those who spent much and worked hard and long in support of me as I went around the country espousing the benefits and advantages of federalism,” the teary-eyed Davao City Mayor began reading his statement.

Two prepared statements According to former North Cotabato Governor Manny Piñol, Duterte was given two prepared statements.

Duterte said instead of seeking a national position, he would end his political career as a public servant of his hometown.

"Time and again, those who believed in me and in the cause that I advocated and continue to advocate, advised me to go for the country’s presidency because that is the destiny that awaits me.

" Duterte said the political plans of his daughter, Sara, would determine his as well.

If Sara decides not to run for Davao City mayor, he might run for the post again.

"Thus, if Inday Sara agrees to run for Mayor, I will retire at the end of my term in 2016.

If she does not, the option to be Mayor again is on the table," he said.

He said he will fade into the night and find “comfort in the thought that this is indeed a beautiful day to end a wild dream.

'You owe them nothing' Piñol believed that the thought of Sara not running for mayor of Davao City weighed on Duterte’s decision.

Sara made herself scarce from the public and did not answer calls and text messages from her father.

She was the one most strongly opposed to her Duterte's presidential bid.

Piñol said Duterte was already set to run for president last week, as many of the president’s advisers said in private.

But the absence of trusted friend and longtime adviser Leoncio Evasco, mayor of Maribojoc town in Bohol, was already an ominous sign Duterte was going to disappoint the local media.

Evasco left for Bohol Monday morning before the press conference.

Before reading his statement, Duterte urged the local press to listen intently to what he was going to say and added that the letter sent to him by Sara had bearing on his decision.

Sara, he said, did not want him to run for president.

“You owe them nothing,” he quoted the last paragraph of Sara's letter to him.

The maverick city mayor said he had been very "local" and had repeatedly declined any appointive post in national government.

He had refused offers from at least 3 presidents in the past for him to run for senator.

Saudi Arabia top Middle East richest list

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia and the UAE jointly account for over 45 percent of the UHNW (ultra high net worth) population in the Middle East, a new Wealth-X study has found.

The wealth-intelligence organization defines UHNW individuals as those with $30 million and above in net assets.

Saudi Arabia has the largest UHNW population (1,495 ultra wealthy individuals) and UHNW wealth ($320 billion) in the region, followed by the UAE, said the report.

In the UAE, there are 1,275 such individuals, worth a combined $255 billion, representing 20 percent of the total ultra wealthy population in the Middle East.

The UAE is ranked 22nd in Wealth-X’s global ranking of UHNW population by country, behind Saudi Arabia (17) but ahead of Kuwait (32). Nearly 1,000 ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals

are based in UAE capital Abu Dhabi (450 individuals) and Dubai (495).

The report said that Saudi Arabia’s more dispersed economic growth has resulted in a split of its UHNW population across a few of its key hubs.

All of these main hubs have experienced faster growth in UHNW population than their respective country’s average.

This concentration exemplifies how vital infrastructure is facilitating the growth of both fortunes and opportunities.

“As such, clusters continue to dominate, and we expect these cities’ existing pull of international resources to become stronger,” said the report.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE jointly account for over 45 percent of the region’s UHNW population, and both of these countries experienced fast growth in UHNW population and wealth.

The only country in the region to experience an overall decline in its UHNW population and wealth this year was Kuwait, due to the slow GDP growth and a declining equity market in the country.

In Saudi Arabia or UAE, the UHNW populations control more than half their respective countries’ total wealth.

The study also reveals that 57 percent of the UAE’s UHNW population amassed their fortune through entrepreneurship.

Only 8 percent fully inherited their fortune; and 35 percent partially inherited and grew their wealth.

Instead, this attitude:

No one and nothing’s perfect.

Not the candidates, not the Philippine political and electoral system, and least of all, not us, the citizenry, the voters.

So the 60-minute Happy Hour with Mayor Duterte was a feeble attempt to get to know the man, his motivations, and his flaws.

How do his failings as a person balance with his ambitions for the nation?

I asked him how many people he has killed because I wanted to satisfy a curiosity about people with that capability.

When I was a police reporter many years ago, I encountered two such men shortly after they’d done the deed.

Duterte

First was the triggerman in the killing of alleged big-time drug lord Don Pepe Oyson.

No other reporter was in the newsroom so I was told to go get details of the story.

The men were seated alongside the walls of the anteroom to the office of then NBI chief Alfredo Lim.

I was breathless because I had come from the Western Police District headquarters, where editors wrongfully instructed me to go interview the lawmen responsible for gunning down an allegedly escaping Oyson.

I politely asked which one shot and killed Oyson. I went to him and asked him how he did it and why.

He gave me his version of what happened -- in a voice that uncontrollably shook.

It felt like it was his initiation into the elite fraternity of men who kill. Second was during a hostage-taking in Dasmarinas Village in Makati.

It was past our 3 p.m. deadline, and we were all simply shooting the breeze in the Makati Press Office when somebody got a call about a developing crime story.

The photographers crammed into the jeep of a radio reporter.

I went with the rest of the other reporters in a cab.

We ran from a gate of the posh village.

The presence of police and village security vehicles pointed us to the crime site.

I rushed to the passenger side of a white AUV parked outside the mansion of the man who was being held hostage.

One man was slumped dead in the front seat, blood oozing out of his head.

I did not know that the hostage-taking incident had concluded.

The sight of the body and smell of fresh blood shocked me.

I retreated to the vehicle behind the AUV. Three village security guards in blue overalls were in front of their vehicle, with one of them -- a hulkish man -- vomiting.

Turns out he was the one who shot dead one of the hostage-takers.

That’s why I suppose it’s not easy to kill. One of the Ten Commandments, this prohibition against taking another’s life, is where I have always drawn the line, primarily because resurrection has not yet been successfully replicated in big enough numbers outside high-tech labs so as not to be considered a miracle.

At the height of the plunder accusations against former President GMA, I would tell rabidly anti-GMA friends,

“Stolen funds can be returned, unlike snuffed lives.” Although now I know: Stealing, especially obscenely huge amounts intended to feed, clothe, shelter, educate les miserables, does kill -- just as stupidity, indifference, and greed (definitely) kills.

Duterte was not coy. His response felt like he was inside a confessional bragging. It was surreal. “I counted to three and that was it,” he said of the kidnappers that took a “Chinese girl” when she was released.

“Babarilin ko ang dalawang bayag niya(I will shoot both his testicles),” he said of the cigarette-smoking tourist in tobacco-free Davao City.

And unrelated to the question of whether or not he’s running for the presidency, Papatayin kita pag pumunta ka sa Davao (I will kill you if you go to Davao).”

Talking about the interview with a friend, we agreed that the bluster might be a case of myth-making.

And you can’t argue with Duterte about how the justice system is nowhere near being just.

A former prosecutor, he enumerated the pillars of the Philippine judicial system and their failures. Of the rehabilitation pillar:

“What can they do? Jail me? In jail, one can have so many women, have or trade in drugs, get a Patek Philippe watch.

” For me, this is the story: A lot of Filipinos like the swagger.

His rage, directed mainly at the continuing lording over of illegal drug traffickers, resonated with many.

Our amateur social psychological conclusion: People cheer Duterte on because he projects the “Justice League” persona.

He is katarungan personified. People bear the weight of social injustice every day.

He is a superhero.

They know that might and money are the only law.

Not right.

And who has not felt homicidal over the homeless babies on the streets being used as pity capital in exchange for our guilt-filled coins?

The corruption that exacerbate this inhumanity of poverty?

The floods?

The traffic?

Every putang ina, babarilin ko ang bayag or papatayin kita is meant more than to shock, but to echo everyman’s and everywoman’s indignation and to shake off some of their frustration.

They agree that Duterte’s motivation -- to make his city safe for his constituents -- justifies his means.

Unlike FPJ, Duterte has captured the imagination of Mindanaoans (and quite a number of people elsewhere) with real-life toughness of talk and action.

He has accepted that politics and governance can be so dirty he developed a capacity for the killing that it sometimes requires.

People’s reaction to him is similar to former policemen Alfredo Lim and Panfilo Lacson.

While Duterte’s strongman’s governance style leaves me a little terrorized, four positive things in a Duterte presidency came out of the interview:

1. He is from Mindanao -- and everything that stems from that fact. Duterte asserts that Mindanao is his home, and because it is home, he won’t let it continue being “the country’s battleground.
” Even as he recognizes that he is a migrant to the island, he is pro-Moro, and not only because a relative is married to one.
According to him, his going around the country promoting federalism -- in place of the Bangsamoro Basic Law in the likelihood that it doesn't pass Congress -- is what people interpreted as his pre-election campaign.

2. He knows his history. The first part of the interview was mostly about history -- as viewed from Mindanao: how the island has always fought against colonizers and for self-determination.

He claims to understand the island’s and its unconquered peoples’ “idiosyncracies.”

3. His concern for patrimony. He argues: China may have all the billions to buy parts of our land, but we cannot agree to sell them because where else would Filipinos go?

This is our land. He is also anti-mining.

4. He gets things done. Tobacco is a big enemy. And Duterte took it on, and seems to be winning that war -- in his cowboy style.

Supporters pledge P1Billion for Duterte, No Strings Attached

DAVAO CITY, Philippines—They are not expecting anything in return, not even publicity.

All they want is a crime-free, drug-free, corruption-free and rebellion-free Philippines.

“They” are a group of Filipino businessmen who believe Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s policies are good for business and have pledged P1 billion to bankroll his presidential candidacy, according to Duterte’s aides.

The businessmen, who call themselves the Anonymous Patriots for Peaceful and Progressive Philippines, or AP4, believe that “by helping Duterte win the presidency, they would be showing their patriotism,” said former North Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Piñol, a Duterte friend and supporter.

No strings attached

“There will be no strings attached. They will not even allow their names to be published,” said Piñol, quoting businessman Benigno Gopez, who speaks for the group.

Peter Laviña, Duterte’s spokesperson, told the Inquirer he could confirm Piñol’s claim.

“Yes, I can confirm. Many well-meaning Filipinos rich and not rich are willing to financially support Duterte,” Laviña said.

He said it had always been volunteerism that had fueled the campaign to convince Duterte to run for President.

“In fact, the federalism campaign [that Duterte has been running] the past year was largely funded by volunteerism,” Laviña said.

His own man

According to Piñol, what has drawn the businessmen to Duterte is his firm stand that no politician should become beholden to interest groups.

That’s why, he said, the businessmen are not asking for anything in return for the money they would be contributing to the Duterte campaign—should the mayor finally decide to run.

“Do we want a President who is not beholden to anybody but only to the Filipino people? AP4 believes we should do our part,” he quoted Gopez as saying.

According to Piñol, Gopez had told him that “many more are willing to contribute to Rody Duterte’s campaign kitty.”

These businessmen, he said, did not even have business transactions with any government agency.

Piñol said AP4 was also hopeful that the seed campaign fund would grow with the participation of patriotic Filipinos.

“While the estimated cost of running a presidential campaign is pegged at between P6 billion to P8 billion, Duterte’s campaign is not expected to cost that much because most of his local political leaders are not dependent on the traditional party funding,” he said.

Election spenders

In August, Duterte disclosed having been called to a meeting by five big businessmen known to be election spenders, who said they wanted to bankroll his presidential campaign.

One of them, he said, owns a large television network, another a communications company, and still another owns and runs a stevedoring company. There were two others who own various big businesses.

But Duterte said he had turned down their offer because he was not running.

In subsequent interviews, he explained that he did not want to be obligated to any election contributor.

“I have been mayor of Davao City for many years now and no one can say I asked or received money from them during the campaign periods,” he said.

Not losing hope

Piñol and Laviña are among the avid Duterte supporters who continue to hope that the mayor will change his mind in the face of his repeated statements that he is definitely not running.

“It’s still several weeks away before the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy,” Piñol said.

Laviña said there were many others who continued to pledge financial donations and other assistance even after the mayor’s rejection of the calls for him to run.

Last week, Duterte urged his supporters not to go to the Luneta on Monday (today) where his supporters are holding a rally aimed at convincing him to run.

A similar rally was also staged at the Rizal Park in Davao City on Sunday, where about 500 people were seen to have already converged as of 4 p.m.

On Laviña’s Facebook page, he appeared to be in contact with organizers of the Luneta rally, posting updates and photos. People could be seen putting up tents for the rally.

Duterte has not issued any statement on the P1-billion campaign pledge and his supporters’ insistence about holding the rally.

Donald Trump: 'I have very thick skin'

Donald Trump says he has "very thick skin" and doesn't "mind being criticized," but that the pundits who are wrong about him need to be corrected.

In back-to-back interviews Thursday morning, Trump continued to accuse Fox News of treating him unfairly and singled out one Fox commentator in particular, Rich Lowry, for being a "bad guy.

Lowry "looked like he was having a nervous breakdown on television" Wednesday night, Trump said on CNN's "New Day."

Trump was reacting to Lowry's off-color remark that Carly Fiorina had castrated Trump during the CNN debate last week.

On Fox's "The Kelly File," Lowry referred to Trump's private parts and said Fiorina had the "precision of a surgeon.

Trump immediately took to Twitter to condemn Lowry and say "he should not be allowed on TV and the FCC should fine him!

A long-running cold war between Trump and Fox has heated up this week, with Trump assailing what he hears on shows like "The Kelly File" and "The O'Reilly Factor" via his popular Twitter account.

Fox said Wednesday that it canceled Trump's Thursday appearance on the "Factor," which led Trump to claim that he'd decided to boycott the channel altogether.

"Fox News has not treated me fairly," Trump reiterated on Thursday morning in an interview with CNN's Alisyn Camerota.

He called into both CNN and MSNBC's morning shows, but not Fox's. On MSNBC, host Joe Scarborough said to him, "Right now you're at odds with Fox News.

We know how powerful they are in the Republican Party.

And you're at war with Rich Lowry, who is the editor of National Review, which is really sort of the gold standard of conservative magazines.

Trump interjected: "I don't think anybody reads it, Joe. I think it has no power whatsoever, I'll be honest.

I think it has no power whatsoever. And he's not a respected guy. Scarborough said "I read it" and Trump said "You're the only one.

Lowry is, indeed, well-read and well-known in conservative circles.

He is also a paid contributor to Fox, appearing regularly on shows like Kelly's.

But Trump said on CNN's "New Day" that he had "never even heard of" Lowry before.

Referring to the castration comment, Trump said, "he used words that are unbelievable -- maybe he'll be fined or censured or thrown off --he's a total fool.

Lowry won't be fined. The Federal Communications Commission occasionally fines broadcast networks for indecency, but has no power to sanction cable channels like Fox News or individual speakers.

The exchanges are the latest example of the immediate, and sometimes distracting, feedback loop between Trump and the people who talk about him on cable news.

"I have this thing called Twitter and Facebook, which is amazing actually," he said on MSNBC.

"It's like owning The New York Times without the losses.

With Twitter, "with one tweet, 140 characters, you can knock somebody out," he commented.

"Pretty cool".

Trump has repeatedly used the social networking service to sound off about perceived slights.

When he condemned Lowry on Wednesday night, Lowry gleefully replied with his own tweets: "Man, you can dish it out but you REALLY, REALLY can't take it".

Speaking with Camerota on Thursday morning, Trump said he can take it.

"Do you not want to hear other voices who criticize you?" she asked.

"I do. I do. I don't mind being criticized. And I don't mind it at all... If I do something wrong,I have very thick skin. I don't mind being criticized. I'll never ever complain, 'cuz I know when I do something wrong, I'm a smart person."

He continued: "I do things wrong, and when I do, I don't mind, they can come at me 15 different ways. But when I'm right or when I don't deserve something, I think it's very, very unfair to speak incorrectly."

Camerota asked, "When you say you have done a lot of things wrong, what's the last thing you've done wrong in this campaign? "Um," Trump said, and paused.

"Well, I don't know. I'd rather not get into that. I'm sure I've made mistakes."
