From now on when I hear the term "cooking with fire" I will be thinking of Oishi's. This place isn't just a restaurant, it's an experience. You go there when you're craving some good food and some entertainment to make the time fly by.

It was the beginning of summer and a girls night out was long overdue. Don't worry, gentleman, Oishi is friendly to both genders.

The two ring-leaders of this outing picked the location, so for once my urbanspoon app was getting a night off.

Now, I don't know about you but I always have a bit of apprehension in my heart when it comes to trying a new sushi place. I'm fearless with any other type of cuisine but it just seems like there's so much that can go wrong with this particular fare.

We were seated surrounding a grill. Let me make sure I'm perfectly clear. There wasn't a grill at the table. The grill basically was the table.

The sushi is good, but if you're looking to up the experience and entertainment level, go for the habachi.

Quick side note, I would be remiss if I didn't take a moment to mention the pot stickers. So. Good.

Now, you're probably thinking that this doesn't sound much different than any other restaurant. Where's the experience? Where's the fire? Here's where the entertainment comes in. When you order the habachi, there's a chef that comes to your grill/table (grable? tabill?) and cooks your food right in front of you.

You start out with some fresh fried rice. This could practically be a meal in and of itself, but I'm not going to stop there. Next, they grill up your vegetables and your protein. Seafood, steak, chicken, tofu, whatever suits your fancy.

As it's being grilled, you better be on the watch out and ready for a workout. The chef starts going around the table and tossing pieces into your mouth. Yep, that's right. You get to play a good ol' fashioned game of food toss. And mom won't even yell at you for playing with your food. All of this is going on while he is

McGurk's Irish Pub & Garden

Let me start out by saying that I am a dyed in the wool, Braveheart loving, claddagh wearing, haggis eating Scottish girl.

Had to say it.

Just to be clear.

Now that we're on the same page, I have a confession. I love this Irish pub.

I feel like a wee bit of a traitor. But I can't help it. It has earned it's rating as one of the top 10 Irish pubs in America.

Let me set this up for you.

It was a dark and stormy night. The concert that I had VIP passes for was rained out. *Cue wailing and gnashing of teeth*

Instead of spending the night at home bemoaning our fate, my friends and I decided we wanted to go out. To someplace "lively". We wanted food and music. We wanted a good time to wash all our troubles away.

Out comes my trusty phone (or secretary as my friend calls it) to open the urbanspoon app and do some restaurant finding magic.

After a couple shakes with no luck (too expensive, been there, doesn't have good reviews) McGurk's popped up. Asked around, found the word on the street indicated it was good.

Right as I walked in, I heard some lively Irish music. It was great. There was a big bar facing the band area, people were singing along, waving their pints in the air and having an all around great time. I felt like I had been transported to the Emerald Isle. I looked for leprechauns, I was that pulled in.

The kitchen was just about to close but the hostess graciously said that if we swore to order fast, she would get us taken care of.

A quick skim of the menu showed me a wide range of fares. With the time clock breathing heavily down my neck, I picked the fish and chips. So did 95% of the rest of the table. We were all either going to be happy together, or sad together.

The good news is that we were all more than happy. We were delighted. You can do a large or a small order of this entree. The small was perfectly portioned for all the ladies at the table. The fish comes in small, fantastically fried squares. Little nuggets of goodness. The chips, much to my surprise, were potato chips. They're made fresh at the restaurant.

All in all, the food was filling and satisfying, the atmosphere was great and the music lifted our previously dejected spirits. Oh, and speaking of spirits, there's multiple full bars with great selections.

I'm still fanatically Scottish. But, I guess that every once in a while a truce can be made to take a quick visit to McGurk's.

The Malt Shop

In my mind, and according to my stomach, Summer has always equaled ice cream. I remember when my mom would give me some change, put me on my bike and send me off to get a cone from the shop down the road. I'd have to perform a balancing act worthy of a circus performer to make it home without dropping my treat on the ground, but was it ever worth it.

Nowadays, with most people thinking first of chain ice cream shops when it comes time for a frozen concoction, The Malt Shop is an opportunity to get back to some basics.

If you're looking for something upscale and chic, it is not the place for you. But if you want a quick and tasty trip back in time so simpler days, you have to check out this little hideaway.

There isn't any indoor seating, but there are some great picnic benches where you can gather round to enjoy some classic burgers, sides, and of course, desserts.

I tried a cheeseburger, a couple fries, tasted some jalapeno poppers, and rounded it all out with a classic chocolate malt. As one of my old friends used to say,"Ice cream doesn't fill you up. It just fills in the cracks."

The cheeseburger was basic but delicious. The fries were good enough, but not outstanding. The jalapeno poppers were hot and creamy. The malt was thick and full of flavor.

We sat around for a few hours enjoying our food and the fine weather. None of us wanted to go and get back to the rush of everyday life. I think that might be one of my favorite things about this place...it's an escape. It's set off the main road on a quiet, tree lined street. There isn't anyone rushing you off of your table and there's more options for food than anyone could ask for.

So come here and let yourself forget everything else, including your calorie count, for a little while. Let yourself be a kid again. I guarantee you won't regret it.

Pepper's Deli & Bar-B-Q

Ever since I moved to St. Louis, I've been looking for a good, local deli. You know, the kind with killer sandwiches and tasty sides. A small place that doesn't feel like a chain. Somewhere that has a wall cooler full of drinks and a dessert display case that just begs you to indulge.

I finally found one and it even has a bonus. Bar-B-Q!

Some friends and I were looking for a place to grab some lunch. We wanted something that wasn't too pricey, was local, and possibly someplace we hadn't been to before (after all, I do have a blog to maintain;).

Once again I pulled out my phone and opened my trusty urbanspoon app. Side note: Seriously, everyone...if you don't have this app, you really need to get it. Lifesaver.

Anyways, I shake it up and find a deli that just happens to be within a few miles of our current location. 95% of people rated that they like it? Awesome! Average meal under $10? Bonus!

When we wandered into this semi-hidden location, it was just what we expected. A deli. Not pretentious, not overdone, just some simple tables, lots of beverage options and a huge menu.

I went with the Chopped Angus Brisket. The beef was smoked for 16 hours, chopped and piled high on a plain egg, onion, or whole wheat bun. I chose the onion bun with a side of creamy potato salad. Add a drink on the side and the whole thing came out under eight dollars. Great meal at a great value.

Though I choose the brisket this time, I can't wait to go back and try the sandwiches. One of my friends got the BLT and it was practically bigger than her head. No skimpy and scarce strips of bacon for this sandwich. This guy was loaded down with hickory smoked high grade pork.

The brisket and potato salad were a generous portion, so next time I'll be sure to save room for the ginormous cookies they have in their display case.

There was only one person working, which slowed down the line a little. He did a great job of getting our meals out to us but if you go during a busy time I would recommend that you don't go in a rush.

Pepper's will definitely be regularly visited by myself and everyone that was in my group. The food was good and the prices can't be beat.

All in all, it's good to see that the old fashioned, privately owned deli still has its place in a chain dominated industry.

The Scottish Arms

For this Scottish girl, there are few things more comforting than walking into this little slice of the Highlands. Even if you don't have any Scottish blood, this is a great place to escape on a blustery day. Or, if you are a fan of the warmer weather, you can sit on the patio.

You'll find waiters in kilts, a good wide selection of beverages and some traditional celtic fare.

My friends and I like to meet up here anytime we feel the need to have a mini virtual vacation to the great UK. On our most recent visit, we started with Baby Bridles, which are little slices of heavenly herbed ground sirloin all wrapped up in puff pastry. We also had Celtic Crisps, consisting of fresh potato chips and hot cheese sauce.

I moved on to traditional Fish 'N' Chips. Their take on this classic dish is fried haddock in five ale batter, chips (fries, for the non-celts), and a side of lemon caper sauce. The fish was fresh and delicious. I honestly couldn't get enough of the lemon caper sauce and the enjoyable layers it added to the meal.

One of my friends had the Shepherds Pie, one of the ultimate comfort foods. It's a skillet of stuffed with ground lamb, onions, carrots, turnips, and parsnips smothered and baked with mashed potatoes.

We finished off with a Almond and Espresso Bread Pudding that was a nice encore to the meal.

You might be noticing that none of this is particularly diet friendly, but you can't be the next Braveheart and worry about your arteries at the same time.

If you're looking for a relaxing experience that could lead to an evening of conversation possibly inspiring you to overthrow a monarchy, The Scottish Arms is the place for you.

Sage Urban American Grill

Recently my roomie and I were trying to pick a restaurant for our birthday celebration and we were at a bit of an impasse. This wasn't your typical birthday, since she was turning 25 and I was leaving my twenties behind. Where to go? Someplace not too fancy, not too plain. Not too expensive, not too cheap. Not too "adventurous", not too boring.

So I do what any tech savvy foodie does in that situation and I take out my phone, open the urbanspoon app and start shaking away. Apparently fate was smiling upon me that day because up popped Sage. I looked at the reviews and went ahead and made the reservation.

To put it simply, I could not be happier with our choice.

It is located in the Soulard District in a beautiful two-level brick building with a small second story patio. The interior is stylish without being pretentious. The service was exceptional, which is impressive since we had a group of 20. I haven't even reached the best part which is definitely the food.

If you're looking for options, there is everything from burgers to seafood. Monday thru Wednesday evenings they have a wine special that if you buy two entrees you get a bottle for the price of a glass.

For my entree I chose the Sage Seafood Capillini which was, in a word, divine. It's main ingredients were jumbo shrimp, lump blue crab and tender clams in a garlic herb white wine broth with artichoke hearts and tomatoes, topped with shredded parmesan. I think, if pressed, I would say this is the best seafood pasta I have ever had. It was one of those meals that just kept getting better as you went along.

From talking to my friends I learned that the hamburgers were delicious and the Red Cedar Plank Salmon was perfection. If you want something small but satisfying to finish your meal, there is a wide selection of Signature Sweet Shot Desserts.

As I was walking out all I could think to myself was, "I can't wait to eat here again".

The Wicked Lady Pub

If you're a lover of fiery foods, The Wicked Lady Pub is a must try.

The atmosphere is relaxed with comfy booths set up for good conversation. They even have trivia nights on Thursdays.

For those seeking a chance to sear their taste buds, go with one of these:

The Wicked Burger (photo below - a half pound burger stuffed with mushrooms, jalapenos, pepper jack cheese and smothered in Wicked sauce)

If you're a little intimidated on the spice front, I highly recommend the regular burger. Stuff it with blu cheese, put some A-1 sauce on it, and you end up with a quality flavor.

Other points of interest are the sausages that are made fresh at the restaurant and the alfredo potatoes (who can go wrong with sliced potatoes smothered in alfredo sauce).

With the average entree under $10, you're in for a wicked meal!

Meskerem Ethiopian Cuisine

Grab your friends and head to Meskerem for some tasty Ethiopian food!

Like most ethnic foods, we think a great way to try it is by going in a group. Everyone can order something different and then share! That way you get to experience all of what these unique cuisines have to offer.

Everyone's "entree" comes served together on a large 18-in platter. And, you get to eat with your hands!

You eat your food with injera -- a flat, sourdough pancake-like bread. Tear off a piece of injera and scoop up the food.

It may not look the most appealing, but it really is good. :) Hard to explain the flavors, but we were very impressed!

You'll say the same thing after you try this authentic Cajun cuisine! Family-owned and operated, (husband's from New Orleans), it's definitely the real thing.

So look no further for great shrimp & sausage gumbo, crab cakes, jambalaya (pork, sausage & rice), shrimp, po-boys, crawfish and more.

But plan on stopping in on Saturday or for lunch during the week. They're closed weekday evenings and Sundays. And if you have to wait for one of the 8-10 tables in this cozy little hole-in-the-wall, it will be worth it. Trust us!

For a small, locally owned cafe, Viviano's has some of St. Louis' best Italian fare, without the fancy prices you may find on The Hill.

You won't be disappointed with any of their generously portioned sandwiches, salads & pastas. You'll probably find a favorite, but do your tastebuds a favor and try it all!

Wasabi Sushi Bar - Clayton

Was expecting to be wow-ed by Wasabi with the recommendations we've gotten lately.

But the sushi rolls were just ok. Fish was definitely fresh, but not a lot of flavor. The sticky rice wasn't very sticky. Service was super-fast though!

Still, it's worth the visit. Next time maybe we'll go straight for the nigiri or sashimi. Definitely will give the Washington Ave location a try...perhaps the better of the sister sushi sites?

The Corner Pub and Grill

If you're looking for a place to watch the football game, The Corner Pub and Grill has plenty of screens for you to watch it.

We headed there actually looking for a good burger, not realizing it was a sports bar and grill. Never the less the atmosphere was fun with sports photos and paraphernalia. Our meal was half good and half mediocre. We loved the fried pickles, the waffle fries, and the homemade potato chips, but the burgers were overcooked and dry.

We will probably give the Corner Pub and Grill another chance one day, but will order something other than the burgers.

Oh yah...they have a little claim to fame as the new upcoming movie Up in the Air with George Clooney filmed a scene there.

A great pizza place in the St. Louis area. (Btw, it's not St. Louis style)

Easy to find in downtown Kirkwood, Dewey's boasts originality and high-quality hand-tossed pizza creations.

Family friendly, group hangout, or a casual date spot. Fast service too.

On a weekend, plan to arrive early for dinner (4pm-5pmish) to avoid waiting in the loooong line for a seat. But if you must wait (totally worth it), you can catch a little pizza-crust-tossing-action thru the kitchen's window.

Pappy's Smokehouse has to be the best BBQ we have found in St. Louis, thus far. Known for their Memphis Style BBQ, everything is cooked fresh daily.

The brisket was flavorful, lean, and juicy. While we haven't tried them yet, we have been told they have the best dry-rub Ribs in town.

As you enter you will stand in probably stand in line for 5 to 10 minutes to place your order, but it is sure worth the wait.

Nachomama's is a casual Tex-Mex restaurant. Definitely not a high class place, however the Riverfront Times calls it a perfect 1st date spot. We disagree, but maybe a great 2nd date for lunch.

They do have good chips and homemade salsa, guacamole, and homemade flour tortillas. Definitely won't find your typical St. Louis style Mexican food there.

Maggie's Lunchbox

Found on Urbanspoon's iPhone app, Maggie's Lunchbox might just be Fenton's best-kept lunch secret!

Maggie serves great deli sandwiches, sides, home-baked pastries and more. Only been there once lunch, and it was busy. Good sign.

They seem to cater to the working crowd. You can order group priced box lunches, or stay eat there in Maggie's nice-sized meeting room with FREE wi-fi.

Maggie's is also a must-try for breakfast too, but they're only open during the weekdays.

Can't wait to go back.

Almost everything served up at this itty bitty Mexican restaurant is homemade. And did I mention that the corn tortillas are YELLOW CORN!? (they are)

Some of the best fresh-mex you'll find in St. Louis...nestled in the Central West End. Besides being one of our top 2 favorites for Mexican fare, its inexpensive menu, outdoor seating and fast service make it a no-brainer for anyone at anytime!

Salinas Mexican Restaurant

Ole! Ole!

Probably the best "authentic" Mexican food we've found so far. Ok, they claim to be Arizona-style/TexMex fare. But take it from us: it really is authentic.

We both have been there about 10 times in the last 6 months and taken several friends there. Everyone has loved it. Whether or not you frequent the Chesterfield area, Salinas is worth the trip.

Not only is it really authentic, they even serve YELLOW corn tortillas...which you may know is rare in St Louis' Mexican restaurants.

Prices are a little more than what you may expect for simple Mexican fare, but this Texan gal is willing to pay a few dollars more para comida buena!

For some sushi is wonderful, for others the thought may induce a gag reflex (such a travesty)!

But if you've never even dreamed of eating raw fish, you would be pleasantly surprised...

But only if you first tried it at a place like Nippon Tei.

Nippon Tei surpassed the whimsical expectation of uncooked fish. The sushi was not fishy, smelly, or what you buy vacuum-packaged at the supermarket. But delightful and fresh.

Clancy's Irish Pub at the Barn...

A pub, a restaurant, a barn, a butcher shop... I just went there for a burger, and it was one of the best I've ever had.

Homemade, the ground meat was so fresh--soft, not rubbery or dry like your typical burger joint.

But this place wasn't typical at all. $$$ hangs from the doorways and walls, aye for an Irish blessing to all the laddies and lassies.

El Paisano Mexican Restaurant

Gotta be honest. Very surprised that decent Mexican food would come from High Ridge, MO... but then again, I cease to be amazed at anything unusual coming from JeffCo. :p

Chicken is all white meat...very fresh, but not much flavor. Salsa tiene mucho cilantro! Me gusta cilantro mucho! Mexican rice is pretty tasty, but it has more vegetables in it than a side of veggie medley. (be prepared to sift through carrots, peas, corn, GREEN BEAN pieces!) Corn I would expect in Mexi-rice, but any green veggies? Doesn't make sense.

If you're in the Fenton area for lunch, give 3 Margaritas a try. They have really cheap lunch specials. Most of them are around $5!

Salsa is pretty good, chunky and cilantro-laden...my favorite combo. Service can be slow at times, but the food initially comes out quick and piping hot!

Locally owned fast food, St. Louis-style Italian. Mostly homemade I think... I've only been a couple times but it's a friendly little place. The owner has been there both times - nice fellow. So next time you're waiting on your movie at Ronnie's to start, drive across the street to Concord Plaza and get some quick pasta!

Not open on Sundays. :(
