Google opens Music service to everyone

Google announced that it is opening its Music service to everyone for free for up to 20,000 songs. In addition, the company is adding a music marketplace through the Android Market, adding a catalog of millions of songs.

The company announced content partners including Universal, EMI and Sony Music. In addition to big labels, Google has also signed on with smaller, independent labels. Warner Music was not listed as a launch partner. The service launches with access to around 13 million tracks, with more to come, Google executive Zahavah Levine said at a news conference.

The company also announced that it will be offering free tracks from artists such as the Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Busta Rhymes, Shakira, Pearl Jam and the Dave Matthews Band. The Rolling Stones will be pushing six unreleased live concerts to the site from now to 2012. A single from Busta Rhymes is free to download immediately.

Users will be able to put iTunes music into their music lockers, and the Music Manager is even supposed to retain users’ playlists and ratings.

For independent artists, Google will let musicians create their own profiles for $25, upload their own music and set their own pricing. Artists will keep 70 percent of revenue generated from the service.

As for the music store, Google is curating the store using recommendations from staff members and personalized recommendations based on artists you’ve indicated that you like. Hooking in its social network, Google+, the company is also making it easy to share songs either publicly or with select groups of friends through the network’s Circles feature. Users will be able to share music from the purchasing screen — even whole albums.

The Google service will also have some exclusive content such as interviews or reviews created by “professional music geeks,” similar to what’s already available on its Google Magnifier service.

The company also announced that T-Mobile customers will soon be able to pay for their music purchases directly through their phone bills, as they currently can with purchases from the Android Market.

Google Music has been in its beta form for months, providing users with a place to upload their music and that is accessible from their computers and mobile Android devices. The revamped Android Market, music-sharing platform and music manager will all roll out to U.S. users over the next few days.

Amazon Prepping Smartphone to Rival iPhone, Android?

Citigroup analysts Mark Mahaney and Kevin Chang believe that Amazon will release a smartphone some time next year.

“With the clear success of the Kindle e-Reader over the past 3 years, and Kindle Fire possibly succeeding in the low-priced Tablet market, we view this as the next logical step for Amazon," wrote Mahaney and Chang. "We continue to believe Amazon has now set its eyes on the Mobile (and Tablet) Media and Product.”

This would raise the stakes yet again in the Amazon-Apple-Google rivalry.

Apple's iPhone and Google's Android are already fighting for mobile users, and the platform is seen as the key battleground for the two companies moving forward.

Users carry their phones with them everywhere, providing endless opportunities for advertisements, sales and so forth.

Sales are of great interest to Amazon, which tends to price its hardware cheaply to lure more users. CEO Jeff Bezos & Co. are seen as being more concerned with getting customers to buy media from the Amazon store than profiting from hardware sales.

The two analysts estimate that the phone will cost $150-$170 to develop and that it may sell for around that price.However, a normal brand would price this type of phone at $243.

Qi: Charging Your Cellphone Without Wires

Smartphones and other portable devices now occupy a central role in many of our lives. According to NPD's Mobile Phone Track, smartphones accounted for 59 percent of all handset sales to U.S. consumers in the third quarter of 2011. These devices can communicate wirelessly using cellular networks, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

But ultimately, their hungry batteries must seek out the regenerative respite of a cord connected to a power source. Indeed, many consumers buy extra chargers to keep their devices juiced up in the office or the car, making chargers the second most popular mobile phone accessory, according to NPD's Retail Tracking Service.

For years, brands such as Powermat, Energizer, and Duracell have offered ways to cut -- or at least bridge -- the power cord by using a charging pad on which you simply place a portable device such as a cellphone. The device starts charging as soon as you place it on the pad.

However, since existing portable devices were not created with the pads in mind, the companies had to ship adapters that needed to be slipped over the backs of the devices or replace the backs in order to connect with the device's internal battery. Chargers were compatible only with their brand of adapters, which made adapters hard to find, and made it difficult for cellphone companies to build in the technology so an adapter wasn't needed.

Now, though, that is starting to change. Nearly all of the major companies interested in wireless charging -- and many large cell phone companies, including Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Motorola, and LG -- have joined the Wireless Power Consortium. The group has dubbed its wireless charging technology "Qi" (pronounced "chee"), which means "vital energy" in Asian philosophy. Any Qi-compatible device or adapter can be charged with any Qi-compatible charging pad.

So are we now all ready to lay down our phones to watch their battery levels rise up? Not yet, due to the classic "chicken and egg" problem. None of those major handset companies are currently shipping phones that have built-in Qi compatibility, reducing the incentive for consumers to buy the pads. And since there are so few pads, the handset companies are reluctant to add the technology.

Verizon Wireless, a Qi supporter, has offered Qi-compatible phone backs for some of its most recent 4G phones such as the HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Charge, and LG Revolution. However, they tend to be pricey, retailing for as much as $30 (not including the charging station). They also add a bit of thickness to the phone in an age when most handset companies are competing on ultra-slim designs such as the 7.7 mm Droid Razr. Indeed, it may be tough to get consumers to think about investing much in something that kicks in when they're not generally using their phone. Also, these days most phones can charge via standard microUSB cables, which can be plugged into a PC that often isn't far away.

But the promise of Qi could allow us to say goodbye to our cellphones' wall warts forever. If Qi can become such a widespread standard that manufacturers make it a standard part of their portable devices, we could see it move beyond the charging pad and get built into all kinds of surfaces -- car dashboards and cup holders, nightstands, desks, and conference room tables. That kind of easy charging would reduce a common source of energy drain for many smartphone owners.

Nokia Says Windows Phones Get ‘Remarkably Positive’ Response

Nokia Oyj Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop said there has been a promising early response for the company’s Windows Phones and predicts demand will be boosted by Microsoft Corp. spreading the tiled interface to personal computers and tablets.

“The reaction is remarkably positive,” Elop said in Barcelona at a conference organized by Morgan Stanley yesterday. “We need to introduce the experience to consumers to get them to try it because we know once they try it they will like it.” Nokia starts selling the Lumia 800, which Elop calls “the first real Windows Phone device,” in six European markets this month.

Elop, 47, last month unveiled Nokia’s first Windows Phone models after the company lost ground with its own 10-year-old Symbian software. Nokia has lost more than 60 billion euros ($81 billion) in market value since Apple Inc. introduced the iPhone in 2007. The company intends to widen its range from the 420- euro Lumia 800 and 270-euro Lumia 710 with both cheaper and more expensive devices, Elop said today.

Nokia, based in Espoo, Finland, is running advertising campaigns focusing on the handsets’ interface of square tiles that dynamically update with new information.

The phones will benefit as Microsoft puts a similar interface on its Windows 8 software for computers and tablets, which will be in front of “hundreds of millions of people,” Elop said. Nokia hasn’t disclosed any plans for its own tablet though it sees an “interesting opportunity,” he said, reiterating prior remarks.

Nokia dropped 0.3 percent to 4.91 euros in Helsinki trading as of 10:33 a.m. Before today, the stock had declined 36 percent this year.

‘Step by Step’

Nokia teamed up with Microsoft to establish a “third ecosystem” competing with the handset and services offerings of the iPhone and devices running Google Inc.’s Android system, which have gouged its market share. Fourth-quarter sales of the Lumia handset could be between 1 million and 1.5 million units, according to Morgan Stanley’s analysts.

“We have taken a very deliberate strategy to how we roll out the Lumia product line,” Elop said. “We know we have a lot of work to do step by step, so we look at it as a build.”

Nokia is customizing the Lumia and its services packages for each market, he said. The U.S. will get Lumia handsets in early 2012 and China in the first half of the year.

Android Attack

Nokia’s share of the smartphone market declined to 16 percent in the third quarter from 50.8 percent when the iPhone was introduced, according to Gartner Inc. Android is the biggest category of devices with 52.5 percent of smartphone sales, and the iPhone is third. Nokia remains the world’s biggest supplier of mobile devices overall by units.

“Our highest priority is to help the Windows Phone ecosystem compete against Android,” Elop said. There are still millions of Nokia users who have not yet purchased Androids or iPhones, he said.

The CEO, a former Microsoft executive, said he is enforcing clearer decision-making and has removed five layers of management. He’s restructuring Nokia’s sales organization after sales plummeted in the second quarter on inventory build-up at retailers.

Painful Quarter

“The second quarter was very painful for everybody, a self-inflicted problem that shouldn’t have happened,” he said. “When a company shifts from a position of great strength and taking orders to selling and having to drive demand, you have to go through a transition. The only thing that matters is driving sell-out” to consumers.

Changing Nokia also means dealing with the unprofitable Nokia Siemens Networks venture with Siemens AG, the company’s last major non-handset-related asset. Nokia and Siemens appointed Jesper Ovesen, a former chief financial officer of Denmark’s TDC A/S and Lego A/S, as executive chairman of the unit in September.

“What you should expect to see from us is clearly a pattern of very aggressively going after the challenges there and making the changes necessary,” Elop said. “The new chairman is off to a very aggressive start on that already.”

Android Versus IPhone

Google competes in the smartphone market by letting manufacturers customize the Android system for their hardware. T-Mobile introduced the first phone powered by Android software, made by HTC Corp., in October 2008, more than a year after Apple’s iPhone debuted.

Android led the global smartphone industry in the third quarter, with 53 percent of the market, according to Gartner. Apple’s iPhone software had 15 percent.

Still, Google may have a harder time narrowing Apple’s music lead, given the longer head start and how established iTunes has become. ITunes customers have downloaded 16 billion songs.

“They have to overcome the No. 1 incumbent in this area,” said Mark Little, an analyst at research firm Ovum in London. “That’s not an easy company to grab share from.”

Amazon.com, the world’s largest online retailer, offers MP3 song downloads from the major labels with a service that began with a public test in 2007. Amazon also unveiled a storage service for users earlier this year.

Spotify’s Service

Music provider Spotify, helped by its partnership with leading social-networking service Facebook, is emerging as another online-music alternative. Since its start in the U.S. in July, Spotify has grown to about 2 million subscribers who pay $5 to $10 per month for a premium service, according to Ken Parks, chief content officer for the London-based company.

Even if it takes a while for Google to secure an agreement with Warner, whose artists include Green Day and Madonna, the company’s reach on the Web may help it succeed. Google’s network of websites had the most visitors worldwide in September with 1.1 billion, according to ComScore Inc. Microsoft Corp. sites had 914 million, and Facebook was No. 3 with 770 million.

“I doubt they’ll meet with immediate success,” Ray Valdes, an analyst at Gartner Inc. in San Jose, California. “If they fail, it will take a while for that to become evident because they have enough presence to make at least slow progress for some time.”

Google Music debuts, adding competition for iTunes

Nov. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc., the world’s largest Internet-search company, introduced a music service that lets people buy songs through the Android Market, stepping up competition with Apple Inc.’s iTunes store.

Users will be able to store and stream as many as 20,000 songs on Google Music, the company said yesterday at an event in Los Angeles. Google has forged partnerships with 1,000 record labels, including Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group, Sony Corp.’s music unit and EMI Group Ltd., letting it offer a total of 13 million songs.

Google has expanded into music, television and movies to help promote its Android smartphone operating system and marketplace. The company, based in Mountain View, California, also will let users share music on its Google+ social network. The challenge will be weaning away users from Apple’s music products and services, which generated $6.3 billion in the last fiscal year.

“Music is more important to Google than ever before,” Jamie Rosenberg, director of digital content for Android, said at the event.

The service will offer reviews, band information and exclusive content from artists such as Coldplay. Users will get 90-second previews of songs before they buy. For a one-time $25 fee, Google also is allowing artists to create pages to display videos, bios and sell self-published music. Users will receive 70 percent of sales and can set pricing.

Fighting Piracy

For record labels, the effort helps ensure that consumers purchase their music legally. It also decreases music companies’ reliance on iTunes, the leading seller of digital songs.

“Any new legitimate place to consume music legally is the best tool we have to combat piracy,” Rob Wells, who oversees digital operations at Universal Music, said at the event.

Some songs are free, while others cost 69 cents to $1.29. The service will work closely with T-Mobile USA Inc., letting that carriers’ customers pay for tracks on their phone bills. Warner Music Group hadn’t yet reached an accord with Google because of pricing and piracy concerns, two people familiar with the matter said earlier this week.

Google shares fell 0.8 percent to $611.47 yesterday. The stock has climbed 2.9 percent this year.

Apple first unveiled its iPod music player in 2001, and in 2003 started the iTunes music store, offering songs for 99 cents apiece. The company has benefited in the past decade from the shift to online music services from CDs. Apple’s iTunes service works on its own devices, such as the iPod, iPhone and iPad tablet, as well as personal computers from other manufacturers.

Running a virtual Windows

Running a virtual Windows Embedded Compact 7 image into a Virtual machine

While working on some Windows Embedded Compact 7 labs setup, I tried to do something that can be really useful for trainers and eventually for developers.
As you might be aware, the ARM emulator has been replaced by a Virtual PC BSP in Compact 7, which means you can test Compact 7 in a virtual environment. In order to have a single virtual machine containing both the dev environment and a virtual platform, I have successfully tested the following configuration:

I set up a Windows 7 Virtual Machine running on an Hyper-V server.
On the virtual machine, I installed the following:

VS 2008 and all Compact 7 tools (with x86 CPU support)
Virtual PC 2007 (do not try with Windows VPC as this new version of VPC requires virtualization hardware that the virtual platform doesn’t support… basically you cannot run Windows VPC in a Virtual Machine, but you can run Virtual PC 2007 in a virtual machine… and there is no trick for this… it just works!

In VPC 2007 I set up a new VM using the VHD located in C:\WINCE700\platform\VirtualPC\VM\hd0_sample.vhd
I created a new OS Design, ensuring the VPC2007 keyboard driver was selected:

I started the VPC2007 newly created VM, it automatically booted into eboot, started broadcasting its bootme messages.
Then from Platform Builder, I just hit “Connect” and the image deployed on the VPC2007 VM and booted.
et voila!

Intel releases SSD Toolbox 3.0 to optimize drive performance

Toolbox 3.0 provides offers secure erase to ensure data is permanently deleted

Computerworld - Intel on Thursday released the third generation of its solid-state drive monitoring and management firmware SSD Toolbox 3.0, which offers many of the same tools as previous versions but with a simpler interface.

The SSD Toolbox, which is available on Intel's website, has a simpler graphical user interface (GUI) for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) technology. SMART can perform diagnostic scans of SSDs, providing drive information such as the amount of free capacity and the estimated life remaining. It also has a health scale, illustrating whether the drive is functioning optimally.

In 2009, Intel's first SSD Toolbox release was focused on optimizing the performance of its X25-M consumer-class solid state disk (SSD) drive with theWindows 7 operating system.

Toolbox 3.0 allows firmware updates to SSDs under Microsoft Windows instead of using DOS with previous versions. The new firmware also uses a simpler GUI and offers a "System Information" icon to help guide users to tech-support troubleshooting.

Toolbox 3.0 can also perform secure erase of a secondary Intel SSD, ensuring all data is cleaned from the drive before it is installed in a secondary system. The utility also allows users to set up automatic TRIM function, which cleans up all data already marked for deletion, putting the capacity back into play.

As with previous versions of the Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox, the free utility provides a system tuner that makes system configuration recommendations for the user's PC for optimal SSD performance. It will detect whether SuperFetch/Prefetch should be disabled and whether ready/boost, defragmenter or Intel's Device Initiated Power Management (DIPM) should be turned off. Since SSDs do not behave like hard disk drives, some of these services, such as disk defragmentation, are designed to make an HDD faster but they aren't needed and can even impede the performance of an SSD.

The Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox also now comes in 11 languages besides English.

The keys are nicely spaced out and very responsive; I found it comfortable to perform even the fastest of typing. The unit lies more or less flat when placed on a table, with an ever-so-slight upward slant.

The Logitech Tablet Keyboard has five rows; the number keys at the top double as Android function keys when used in conjunction with a function (Fn) button. Those Android keys allow you to open your tablet's browser, music player, calendar, or Gmail app, as well as remotely control music playback and volume on the tablet. These are handy, but I would have liked it better if they had been dedicated rather than combination keys. The keyboard does have dedicated Search, Back, Home and Menu keys.

Though all of the keyboards I tested offer Delete keys, the Logitech keyboard is the only one on which the key actually functions as you would expect: It deletes the letter that comes immediately after the cursor. For some reason, every other keyboard's Delete key either did nothing or served as a second Backspace key, deleting letters before the cursor instead of after it.

In terms of accuracy, the Logitech keyboard's performance was outstanding, and I encountered few errors in prolonged use. When typing extremely fast, I did experience some sporadic issues in which certain letters would appear multiple times, or certain letters would be omitted even though I'd pressed them. This occurred rarely, however, and seems to be a common occurrence among Bluetooth keyboards.

World’s Cheapest Indian Tablet PC at 50$

Aakash is the new name of India’s aspiration to produce an Indian computing device. Announced by the Minister for Human Resource Development (MHRD) on July 22, 2010 as “Sakshaat”, it was launched in New Delhi on Oct 5, 2011.

India’s aspiration to create a “made in India” computer was first reflected in a prototype “”Simputer”" that never went into industrial production. Later, the Ministry of Science & Technology launched an India designed laptop named Mobilis and that was launched by Kapil Sibal. Mobilis did not take off and the Govt of Brazil cancelled the order and blacklisted the Indian supplier.

Four years later Kapil Sibal, this time as Minister for Human Resource Development MHRD, the name India gives its Education Minister, announced a new low-cost computing and access device that was supposed to compete with One Laptop per Child, OLPC, a low-cost laptop cum tablet designed at MIT’s Media Lab and led by Professor Nicholas Negroponte with a difference. While OLPC is designed for the underprivileged younger school going children in places that lack both physical and teaching infrastructure, Kapil Sibal’s low cost computer was targeted at urban, college going students.

The device was supposed to be designed by the students of India’s famed IITs that while being known for producing capable undergraduates have yet to distinguish themselves globally in research, development and product creation. When MHRD announced the low cost computer what he showed was purchased off the shelf. None of India’s electronic components and PC and laptop manufacturers were ready to bite the bullet and the project languished for about a year.

Then a year after the announcement MHRD announced that the low cost computer will be launched in 6 weeks and 9 weeks later MHRD showcased a tablet named “Aaakash” that was not a shadow of what was initially promised for $35 and was going to cost $60 instead. Arguably its greatest champion, India’s TV channel “NDTV” argued that the new low cost tablet was not a patch that was shown as a prototype and was going to cost about twice as much.

“Aakash” is an Android-based tablet computer claimed to be designed and developed by a UK based company DataWind primarily as a platform for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games, and web content. It is planned to be manufactured in India as a low cost device for urban, college students in order to attempt to bridge the digital divide. The commercial version of the tablet will be retailed under the brand name UbiSlate 7.

The original prototype was unveiled in 2010, purported as a “$35 laptop”. The device was formally launched on 5 October 2011 asAakash, made by the London-based manufacturing company DataWind.Aakash will be assembled at DataWind’s new production centre in the southern city of Hyderabad. Initially, the device will be sold to the Government of India at $50.It is expected to be sold for $60 in the retail stores.

The device has been developed as part of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology that aims to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities on the subcontinent in an e-learning program via an existing Sakshat portal.

Since the unveiling of “Aakash” by India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), there have been various observations showing that the tablet is not ready for the market yet and it got thumbs down by CNN and BBC .

Satish Jha of OLPC, that created the first low-cost laptop for educating the underprivileged believes that MHRD got the question wrong. He was quoted to say that it was not about a cheap laptop. The burning question is about how do we educate the underprivileged children who have enormous potential to learn and create and make the world a better place. His was a sharply critical observation positioning OLPC as a tested, quality, gold standard of education and any effort to develop just a cheap laptop to a price point losing the focus on education. He also found the MHRD’s cheap tablet not ready to be considered at alpha stage of product creation and observed that in a highly competitive market Government need not have intervened and instead focused on education for the children who have been denied quality education for generations.

Top 10 Mobile Applications of 2012

For many of the categories on this list, there are a number of mobile apps that are already available today. But what Gartner makes clear is that we're just getting started when it comes to their use.For example, location-based services (LBS) - there still isn't one single app which everyone uses to find their friends out in the real world via their mobile phones. Instead, we have a number of similar but competing applications all vying to be the Facebook of location-based apps.

Another example is money payments - this type of service is having more of an impact in the developing world right now where access to banks is more difficult than here in the Western world where people just want the convenience of paying through their mobiles. When was the last time you paid someone or paid at checkout through your mobile phone? Never? That sounds about right.

The List

The full list is as follows:

Money Transfer: This refers to people sending money via SMS messages. Like mobile payments, this service has more appeal in developing markets for now. However, there may come a time when even using your debit card seems passé, while paying for something with actual cash seems downright ancient.

Location-Based Services: As mentioned above, there are still far too many services to choose from when it comes to location-based social networking, fragmenting the market. Your friends on Loopt are often different than those on Brightkite and that list is different than those on Foursquare. But LBS extends to more than social networks - it includes any application that taps into your phone's GPS capabilities to offer up location-based services of any kind, whether that's local business reviews or directions to the nearest Starbucks. Gartner says this will be one of the most disruptive technologies in the future, with a user base growing from 96 million in 2009 to 526 million in 2012.
Mobile Search: No, mobile search isn't new, but on the mobile platform, it may get shaken up a bit. Gartner predicts that consumers won't necessarily be sticking with the search services they know and use on the Web (think Google, Bing, Yahoo) and instead experiment with using a few different search providers that have "unique technologies" for mobile search. While that statement is a little vague, it sounds like good news for services like Taptu who have entered this field with search offerings designed from the ground-up for mobile devices.
Mobile Browsing: Saying that mobile browsing technologies will be heavily used in the future sounds a little bit like stating the obvious. But as Gartner notes, mobile browsing capabilities currently exist only on 60%+ of handsets today. By 2013, that number will climb to 80%, meaning that those who are still using the app-less,more basic feature phones will still be joining the mobile web in mass numbers over the coming years. That's also good news for web developers who can build mobile web applications to cater to this bunch as opposed to focusing all their efforts into building apps for the numerous mobile platforms like the iPhone, Android, RIM, and others.
Mobile Health Monitoring: Another technology whose impact will be felt more heavily in developing markets, mobile health monitoring is still at an early stage of maturity and implementation says Gartner. Project rollouts have been limited to pilot projects for now, but in the coming years the industry will begin to monetize these efforts by offering mobile healthcare monitoring products, services, and solutions to various care delivery organizations.
Mobile Payments: Like mobile transfers, mobile payments are more common in developing markets at the moment, but that is quickly changing. Yet even as this type of service grows, Gartner admits there will be challenges. Mobile payments will be a "highly fragmented market" where there will not be "standard practices of deployment," notes the report. That makes it sound like this is one technology that will still need some work, even when 2012 rolls around.
Near Field Communications (NFC): More popular in some European and Asian markets than in the U.S., NFC still isn't a standard feature on many of today's phones. That may be about to change, too. In late 2010, Gartner says that NFC-enabled phones will begin to ship in volume, with Asia leading deployments, followed by Europe and North America.
Mobile Advertising: Also not new but growing fast, mobile advertising is one of the most important ways to monetize mobile content. Total spending on mobile advertising in 2008 was $530.2 million and it will grow to $7.5 billion in 2012. And mobile advertising will also be used by companies alongside their other campaigns including TV, radio, print, and outdoors.
Mobile Instant Messaging: Gartner says that latent user demand and market conditions are conductive to mobile IM's future adoption. It will appeal to developing markets where mobile phones are often the only connectivity device a user owns. But will it be a major app by 2012? It seems that SMS is still the service to beat, especially in the developing world. We'll have to wait and see on this one.
Mobile Music: Sure, you have the iPhone, but what about your other options? What about mobile music services - especially those for non-iPhone devices? We're still waiting on Spotifyin the U.S., for example, and their competition too. Gartner says that we're beginning to see new innovative models in this area that will include both device (think "Comes with Music") and service bundles.

Research firm Gartner has just put out a list of the top ten mobile applications of the future. Well, not the distant future, but the far off year of 2012. Nothing on the list is all that surprising or, in many cases, even all that new. Instead, the list includes the sorts of technologies that are just now coming into their own and haven't yet seen widespread adoption as well as the already common technologies that are still experiencing growth.

What's Missing?

A glaring omission from this report is that of Augmented Reality. Gartner had even placed this technology on their "Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2009" report earlier this year. Do they not think that AR will have a major impact by 2012? Considering that's only a little over a year away, it could just be too soon for AR to see the widespread adoption that we hoped it would have by then. Or it's possible that - as some have suspected - AR is simply a "cool" way to see and interact with the world around you, but hasn't produced any "must-have," highly useful applications just yet. For example, seeing AR views of local businesses and user recommendations is fun, but is it a markedly better experience than using a service like Yelp? For many, that answer today is "no." AR needs to grow out of being a technology you use "because you can" to one you use "because you have to." Until it's the best option to perform a particular task, it may not make Gartner's next list, either.

Future Information Technology (FutureTech 2012)

Future technology information technology would stand for all of continuously evolving and converging information technologies, including digital convergence, multimedia convergence, intelligent applications, embedded systems, mobile and wireless communications, bio-inspired computing, grid and cloud computing, semantic web, user experience and HCI, secuity and trust computing and so on, for satisfying our ever-changing needs.

In past twenty five years or so, Information Technology (IT) influenced and changed every aspect of our lives and our cultures. Without various IT-based applications, we would find it difficult to keep information stored securely, to process information efficiently, and to communicate information conveniently. In the future world, IT will play a very important role in convergence of computing, communication, and all other computational sciences and application and IT also will influence the future world's various areas, including science, engineering, industry, business, law, politics, culture, medicine, and so on.
Our conference is intended to foster the dissemination of state-of-the-art research in all future IT areas, including their models, services, and novel applications associated with their utilization.

FutureTech 2012 is the next edition of FutureTech 2011(Loutraki, Greece), FutureTech 2010 (Busan, Korea, May 2010) which was the next event in a series of highly successful the International Symposium on Ubiquitous Applications & Security Services (UASS-09, USA, Jan. 2009), previously held as UASS-08 (Okinawa, Japan,Mar. 2008), UASS-07 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August, 2007), and UASS-06 (Glasgow, Scotland, UK, May, 2006).

Papers presented in the FutureTech-12 will be published by Springer Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering(Indexed by EI & SCOPUS), ISSN: 1876-1100.

Blackberry Curve 9360 smartphone in India in alliance

with Airtel. Blackberry Curve 9360 is powered by

BlackBerry 7 OS and 800 Mhz processor.

BlackBerry Curve 9360 smartphone packed a 2.44 inch

display, QWERTY keypad along with optical trackpad,

512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4 GB internal memory and up to 32GB of

expandable memory. Weighing at 99 just grams, it comes with a 5 megapixel

camera with flash, and supports VGA video recording.

The BlackBerry Curve 9360 is 3G enabled device, and comes with Wi-Fi,

Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and Wikitude World Browser.

Blackberry Curve 9360 is priced at Rs. 19,990.

Akash Ubislate, India’s cheapest Android tablet launched

The much anticipated $35 tablet has been officially launched by Union Ministry for Human Resource Development. The tablet is called Akash Ubislate and will be available to students at the subsidized price of $35 (approx Rs. 1720).

Weighing 350 grams, Akash tablet features a 7 inch resistive touchscreen diaplay, has 256 MB RAM, 2 GB internal storage, 32 GB expandable memory slot, two USB ports, Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g connectivity and 3.5 mm audio jack.

Akash Ubislate is powered by Android 2.2 OS and 366 Mhz. Connexant with Graphics accelerator and HD Video processor. Premium version of this tablet will also have inbuilt cellular modem (GSM/3G) and SIM card slot.
