Although the fifth edition of this textbook underwent a major revision, the development of the sixth edition has been quite a challenge due to the recent proliferation of research knowledge and the advancements made in the treatment of psychiatric mental illness. Since its inception, the goal has been to produce a textbook that addresses the current concepts used in psychiatric mental health nursing to foster competency in practicing nurses and other mental health professionals.

Conversations with various nurse educators and comments by reviewers of the fifth edition helped this author to identify specific content that should be included in this sixth edition of Basic Concepts of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. Consideration was given to the limited amount of time in which nurse educators are able to present psychiatric mental health nursing content.

Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system family which uses the Linux kernel. Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free software and open source development; typically all the underlying source code can be freely modified, used, and redistributed by anyone.
