Christmas Prophecies

In the Old Testament, God promised a Savior would come to pay for the sins of the world. Christmas is the time we celebrate the birth of the Savior. The Bible has prophecies about the Savior’s birth, the Savior’s life, the Savior’s death, and the Savior’s resurrection. Jesus Christ perfectly fulfilled all of these prophecies. Christmas is the time Christians celebrate the birth of their Savior, Jesus Christ. Today we will look at some of the prophecies about the Jesus’ birth and how they were fulfilled.

1. １４それならそれでいいでしょう。しるしは神様がお決めになります。見ていなさい。処女が子供を産みます。彼女は生まれた子にインマヌエル〔「神様がいっしょにおられる」の意〕という名前をつけます。Isaiah 7:14

This prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus was born:

１８イエス・キリストの誕生は次のとおりです。母マリヤはヨセフと婚約していました。ところが、結婚する前に、聖霊によってみごもったのです。１９婚約者のヨセフは、神の教えを堅く守る人でしたから、婚約を破棄しようと決心しました。しかし、人前にマリヤの恥をさらしたくなかったので、ひそかに縁を切ることにしました。２０ヨセフがこのことで悩んでいた時、御使いが夢に現われて言いました。「ダビデの子孫ヨセフよ。ためらわないで、マリヤと結婚しなさい。マリヤは聖霊様によってみごもったのです。２１彼女は男の子を産みます。その子をイエス（救い主）と名づけなさい。この方こそ、ご自分を信じる人々を、罪から救ってくださるからです。２２このことはみな、神様が預言者を通して語られた、次のことばが実現するためです。２３『見よ。処女がみごもって、男の子を産む。その子はインマヌエル〔神が私たちと共におられる〕と呼ばれる。』」２４目が覚めると、ヨセフは、御使いの命じたとおり、マリヤと結婚しました。２５しかし、その子が生まれるまでは、マリヤに触れませんでした。そして、生まれた子をイエスと名づけました。
Matthew 1:18-25

Note that the prophecy stated that the Savior would be called Immanuel. Immanuel means “God with us”. The name Jesus means “The Lord saves”. Jesus grew into a man and was sacrificed for the salvation of everyone who believes. There are many names for Jesus. They all have a divine meaning. Each name for Jesus reveals something about Jesus’ character.

(Jesus’ family can be traced all the way back to Abraham.)

When Jesus was born, the King of Judah wanted to know how to find him. He asked the Magi from the East where the Messiah was to be born. The Magi told King Herod that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem:

１イエスはヘロデ王の時代に、ユダヤのベツレヘムの町でお生まれになりました。そのころ、天文学者たちが、東の国からはるばるエルサレムへやって来て、こう尋ねました。２「このたびお生まれになったユダヤ人の王様は、どこにおられますか。私たちは、その方の星をはるか東の国で見たので、その方を拝むために参ったのです。」３それを聞いたヘロデ大王は、ひどくうろたえ、エルサレム中がその噂でもちきりになりました。４大王はさっそくユダヤ人の宗教的指導者たちを召集し、「預言者どもは、メシヤ（救い主）がどこで生まれると告げているのか」と尋ねました。５彼らは答えました。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者ミカがこう書いております。６『小さな町ベツレヘムよ。おまえはユダヤの中でも決してただのつまらない町ではない。おまえから偉大な支配者が出て、わたしの国民イスラエルを治めるようになるからだ。』」Matthew 2:1-6

And, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, even though Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth:

Bethlehem was a small town about 5 miles south of Jerusalem in Judah. This area is the same area where King David and his ancestors and descendents had come from. This fact was very important to the Jewish people. King David was a great king in their history. The Jewish people expected the Savior to come from David’s family. Joseph, Mary’s husband, was a descendant of David. Legally, Joseph was Jesus’ father and Jesus was a descendant of King David.

The angels appeared to the shepherds to tell them the Savior had been born. The angels told the shepherds they would find the Savior in a manger. Then, many angels appeared and sang about the Savior.

3. １イスラエルが子供のころ、わたしは彼を息子のように愛し、エジプトから連れ出した。Hosea 11:1

This prophecy was fulfilled in Matthew 2:13-14.

１３彼らが帰ったあと、主の使いが夢でヨセフに現われて言いました。「起きなさい。幼子とその母を連れて、エジプトに逃げるのです。そして、帰れと言うまで、ずっとそこにいなさい。ヘロデがこの子を殺そうとしています。」１４ヨセフは、マリヤと幼子を連れて、その夜のうちにエジプトへ旅立ちました。

While Joseph was sleeping, he was warned by an angel to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt. King Herod was looking for Jesus to kill him. Joseph, Mary, and Jesus stayed in Egypt until King Herod died. Joseph, Mary and Jesus lived in Nazareth after they left Egypt.

4. “This is what the Lord says: ‘A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more.’” Jeremiah 31:15

This prophecy was fulfilled in Matthew 2:16.

１６ヘロデは、天文学者たちにだまされたとわかると、怒り狂い、すぐさま、ベツレヘムに兵隊をやって、町とその近辺に住む二歳以下の男の子を一人残らず殺せ、と命じました。というのは、学者たちが、その星は二年前に現われたと言っていたからです。

King Herod wanted to be the only king. He heard that a new king had been born in Bethlehem. So, he had all the baby boys in Bethlehem and the surrounding areas killed.

Ramah is a city that is close to Bethlehem. Rachel is a lady who was married to a man named Jacob in the Old Testament. Rachel’s descendants lived in the area around Bethlehem. That is why this prophecy mentions her name.

Since Joseph took his family to Egypt, Jesus wasn’t killed

5. ７日増しに努力を重ね、平和を実現する彼の政治は、決してすたれません。彼は先祖ダビデの王座につき、完全な正しさをもって支配します。世界中の国に、本物の正義と平和とはこんなものだと手本を示すのです。天の軍勢の主が本腰を入れてぶつかるので、このことは必ず実現します。 Isaiah 9:7

“For this is what the Lord says: ‘David will never fail to have a man sit on the throne of the house of Israel.” Jeremiah 33:17

These prophecies began to be fulfilled in Luke 1:32-33.

３２彼は非常に偉大な人になり、神の子と呼ばれます。神である主は、その子に先祖ダビデの王座をお与えになります。３３彼は永遠にイスラエルを治め、その国はいつまでも続くのです。」

The angel told Mary that her son would be great. The angel told Mary that her son would be called the Son of the Most High. The Son of the Most High means the Son of God.

The prophecy says there will be no end to His reign. The Bible says that every person will bow before Jesus either willingly or unwillingly.

９しかし、それだからこそ、神様はキリスト様を高く天に引き上げ、最高の名をお与えになりました。１０それは、そのお名前のもとに、すべてのものが天でも地上でも地下でもひざまずき、１１すべての口が「イエス・キリストは主です」と告白して、父なる神がほめたたえられるためです。Philippians 2:9-11

Because Jesus died and rose again, the Bible says He has power over the living and the dead.

９キリスト様の死と復活の目的は、私たちが生きている時も死んでいる時も、キリスト様がいつも私たちの主となられることだったのです。 Romans 14:9

The Bible says Jesus is on His throne in Heaven.

２１勝利を得る人を、わたしといっしょに王座につかせましょう。ちょうど、わたしが勝利を得た時、父から、王座に共に座ることを許されたように。 Revelation 3:21

The names in this prophecy are all names that are used for Jesus:

Wonderful Counselor – He has a wonderful plan for us and He will give us the Holy Spirit to help us

１６父に、もう一人の助け主を送っていただくよう、お願いしましょう。その助け主は、絶対にあなたがたを離れません。John 14:16

Mighty God – He has power and authority in Heaven and on Earth

Everlasting Father – He provides for and protects the people who follow Him

Prince of Peace – The Bible says true peace can only from knowing Jesus

２７ところで、贈り物をあげましょう。そう、あなたがたの思いと心を安らかにしてあげる、それがわたしの贈り物です。わたしが与える平安は、この世が与える、はかない平安とは比べものになりません。だから、どんな時にも、おろおろしたり、恐れたりしてはいけません。John 14:27

All of these prophecies can be difficult to understand. However, they are one of the reasons why Christians know they can trust the Bible. The history in the Bible matches the history of the world. Prophecies in the Bible have come true exactly the way they were predicted. Jesus perfectly fulfilled every prophecy about the coming Savior.

Today, Christmas has been commercialized into a holiday of gift-giving. People forget the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus is God’s gift to mankind. Because God loves us, He sent Jesus to come and be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. The Bible says anyone who believes this will receive the gift of eternal life.

How can a person receive the gift of eternal life?

It’s as easy as A B C:

A Admit to God that you are not perfect and you know you have sinned.

B Believe that Jesus died to pay for your sins.

C Confess to God (tell God) that you believe that Jesus is His Son and that He died and rose again so you can have Eternal life.

９なぜなら、もし自分の口で「イエス・キリストは私の主です」と告白し、自分の心で、神様はイエス・キリストを死人の中から復活させてくださったと信じるなら、あなたは救われるからです。１０人は、心で信じることによって、神様から正しい者とされ、その信仰を自分の口で告白することによって、救いを確実なものとするからです。１３主の御名を呼び求める者は、だれでも救われるのです。Romans 10:9-10, 13

Confess to God that you want to accept His gift of Eternal Life by trusting Jesus to be your Savior.

２３罪の支払う報酬は死です。しかし、神様が、ただで下さる贈り物は、私たちの主キリスト・イエスによる永遠のいのちです。Romans 6:23

When you do these things, the Bible promises that God will send His Holy Spirit into your heart and you will go to Heaven when you die.

３８ペテロは答えました。「一人一人が、罪の生活から足を洗って神様に立ち返りなさい。そして、罪を赦していただくために、イエス・キリストの名によってバプテスマ（洗礼）を受けなさい。そうすれば、聖霊様という贈り物をいただけます。Acts 2:38

２０だが、悪霊どもが言うことを聞くからといって、いい気になってはいけません。何よりも大切なのは、あなたがたの名前が天国の市民として登録されていることなのです。」

What Does The Bible Say About Thankfulness?

Everyone likes to be appreciated. When we do something nice for someone, we want them to thank us. Jesus had the same feeling:

１１一行はエルサレムを目指して進み、途中サマリヤとガリラヤの境を通りました。１２ある村に入ると、十人のらい病人がずっと向こうのほうから、１３大声で、「イエス様ーっ！どうぞお助けを！」と叫びました。１４イエスはそちらに目をやり、「さあ、祭司のところへ行き、らい病が治ったことを見せてきなさい」と言われました。そのとおり出かけて行くと、途中で、らい病はきれいに治りました。１５１６その中の一人が、イエスのところに引き返し、足もとにひれ伏して、「ありがとうございます。おっしゃるとおり、すっかりよくなりました。神様に栄光がありますように」と言いました。実はこの人は、ユダヤ人から軽べつされていたサマリヤ人でした。１７「はて、十人全部を治したはずだが……、ほかの九人はどうしたのか。１８神を賛美するために帰って来たのが、この外国人だけとは……。」１９こうおっしゃってから、イエスはその男に、「さあ、立ってお帰りなさい。あなたの信仰があなたを治したのです」と言われました。準備をして待て Luke 17:11-19

The Bible says we should be thankful—not because God or anyone else needs our appreciation, but because it is good for us to be thankful. So, how can having an “attitude of gratitude” help us?

1) Being thankful motivates us to look for God’s purpose in our circumstances.

２８そして私たちは、神様を愛し、神様のご計画どおりに歩んでいるなら、自分の身に起こることはすべて、益となることを知っているのです。Romans 8:28

2) Being thankful reminds us of our dependence upon God.

１ああ神様、どうかお救いください。私は隠れ家を求めてまいりました。２「あなたは私の主です。神様のもと以外に助かる場所はありません。」私はこう申し上げました。Psalm 16:1-2

3) Being thankful increases our trust in God.

８彼らは次のように歌いました。「さあ、神様に感謝し、神様に祈れ。世界の人々に、偉大なみわざを伝えよ。９神様をたたえ、そのみわざを告げ知らせよ。１０神様の聖なる名を誇れ。神様を慕い求める者すべてを喜ばせよ。１１神様とその御力とを尋ね求めよ。絶えず御顔を慕い求めよ。1２神様のしもべアブラハムの子孫よ。1 Chronicles 16:8-12

4) Being thankful teaches us to rejoice in every situation.

The apostle Paul had many troubles, but he learned to be thankful no matter what situation he found himself in.

１２文なしの時にも、何でもそろっている時にも、どのように生活すべきか知っています。満腹の時にも空腹の時にも、豊かな時にも貧しい時にも、どんな境遇でも満足する秘訣を身につけたのです。１３なぜなら、力を与え、強めてくださるキリスト様に助けられて、私は、神様の要求を、何でも成し遂げることができるからです。Philippians 4:12-13

5) Being thankful will turn our anxiety into peace.

６何事も心配してはなりません。むしろ、どんなことでも祈りなさい。神様にお願いしなさい。そして、祈りに答えてくださる神様に感謝するのを、忘れてはなりません。７そうすれば、人間の理解をはるかに超えた、すばらしい神様の平安を経験できます。キリスト・イエスに頼る時、その平安は、あなたがたの心と思いとを静め、安らかにしてくれるのです。Philippians 4:6-7

10 things the Bible says Believers should be thankful for:

1. God’s goodness:

１ハレルヤ。神様の恵み深さを感謝します。その愛は、いつまでも脈打っています。 Psalm 106:1

2. God’s closeness to us:

１神様。感謝のことばもありません！このすばらしい奇蹟の数数は、やっぱり私たちをおこころにかけてくださっていた証拠なのですね。Psalm 75:1

3. God’s power and eternal reign:

１７「今も、昔も存在される全能の神、主に、心から感謝します。あなたが、偉大な力を発揮して、世界を支配する王となられたからです。 Revelation 11:17

4. The gift of Christ:

１５神様のひとり息子という、言い表わせないほどすばらしい神様の贈り物を感謝します。 2 Corinthians 9:15

5. Salvation:

２３罪の支払う報酬は死です。しかし、神様が、ただで下さる贈り物は、私たちの主キリスト・イエスによる永遠のいのちです。Romans 6:23

6. God’s good plans and His Holy Spirit to direct us:

8. The faith of other Believers:

８何はさておき言っておきたいのは、どこへ行っても、あなたがたの評判を耳にするということです。神様を信じるあなたがたの信仰は、世界中に知れ渡っているからです。私は、この良い評判を聞くたびに、イエス・キリストによって、どんなに神様に感謝していることでしょう。Romans 1:8

３愛する皆さん。私は、神様にたいへん感謝しています。それは、あなたがたの信仰がめざましく成長し、お互いがますます深い愛で結ばれているからです。それを思うと、自然に神様に対する感謝の思いがわき上がってきます。もちろん感謝して当たり前のことですが。 2 Thessalonians 1:3

9. Victory over death and the grave:

罪、すなわち死をもたらすとげは、ことごとく切り取られます。そして、罪をあばくおきても、もはや私たちをさばきません。５７これらすべてのゆえに、どう神様に感謝したらよいでしょう。神様は、主イエス・キリストによって、私たちに勝利を与えてくださるのです。1Corinthians 15:56-57

10. Everything:

１８どんなことがあっても、感謝を忘れないように。これこそ、神様が、キリスト・イエスに属するあなたがたに、望んでおられることだからです。1Thessalonians 5:18

1. The Bible is really a collection of books. It was written over
1600 years by 40 different men. These men came from all walks of life: they were doctors, fishermen, princes, herdsmen, poets, and laborers.

2. There is harmony and unity throughout the Bible because all of the writers were inspired by God’s Holy Spirit.

それは、これら神様を敬う人の心に住まれる聖霊様がお授けになった、混じりけのない神様からのことばなのです。 (2 Peter 1:21)

They all wrote about the same message: Salvation through God’s Son, Jesus Christ. This message is for all people of all nations.

3. Studying the Bible will change you. God will speak to you through His Word.

１２神様のことばは生きていて、力にあふれています。それは、鋭い刃物みたいに切れ味がよく、心の奥深くに潜んでいる思いや欲望にまでメスを入れ、私たちの赤裸々な姿をさらけ出します。(Hebrews 4:12)

4. The Bible has 2 main parts: The Old Testament and The New Testament. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament. The Books are divided into chapters. The chapters are divided into verses. These numbers aren’t divinely inspired. They were added later for our convenience.

5. The Old Testament writers were inspired to prophesy about the coming of the Savior, Jesus Christ. The New Testament writers were biographers and witnesses of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection on earth. Both testaments reveal that Jesus fulfilled every prophecy that was written about Him—even the ones that were written hundreds of years before His birth.

6. The Old Testament has 3 main sections:
History—Genesis to Esther
Poetry—Job to Song of Solomon
Prophecy—Isaiah to Malachi

7. The New Testament has 4 main sections:
The Gospels (“good news”)—Matthew to John
History—Acts
Epistles (letters)—Romans to Jude
Prophecy—Revelation

Why should we trust the Bible? How can we know it’s true?

8. The Bible claims that it is the word of God.

１６全体が神様の霊感によって書かれた聖書は、何が真理であり、何が悪であるかをよく教えてくれます。また、私たちの生活をまっすぐにし、正しいことを行なう力を与えてくれます。１７こうして神様は、私たちをあらゆる点で整え、すべての人に善を行なう力を、十分に授けてくださるのです。(2 Timothy3:16-17)

9. The Bible is a harmonious, unified book. The Bible was written by 40 different men who lived in different generations. If God didn’t inspire these 40 men, how could they write such a unified book?

10. There is archaeological, historical, and geographical evidence that supports the Bible. Archaeologists have found artifacts and ruins from Biblical cities. The history in the Bible matches the history of the world. The stories in the Bible are about real people who lived on this earth. The maps in the Bible are very similar to the maps we use today. (Some of the names have changed, but the geography is the same.)

11. The prophecies in the Bible have been (or will be) fulfilled with 100% accuracy. Many of these prophecies were about the Savior, but there are prophecies about other events in history. For example, the situation in the Middle East was prophesied in Genesis. The ability of the Bible to see into future supports that the Bible is not an ordinary book. There have been many attempts to destroy or disprove the Bible, but no one has ever been able to do so. Even this is a fulfilled prophecy.

Delilah

1. Delilah lived at the same time as Samson. Samson was an Israelite hero. He’s famous because of his great physical strength. Delilah is similar to “lavlah” which means “night”. It can also mean “flirtatious”. Samson means “the sun”. So, since their names have opposite meanings, we can probably guess that there are going to be problems!

2. Delilah was approached by the Philistine rulers. They told her to find the secret of Samson’s strength.

４そののちサムソンは、ソレクの谷に住むデリラという女を愛するようになりました。５ペリシテ人の五人の領主がじきじき彼女を訪ね、「サムソンの力の秘密を探ってくれないか。どうしたら、あいつを鎖で縛り上げてやれるか、ぜひとも知りたいのだ」と頼みました。それも、ただではありません。「この仕事を引き受けてくれたら、めいめいが三十万円ずつ出そう」と約束したのです。 Judges 16:4-5

3. Delilah asked Samson the secret of his strength, but he lied to her 3 times.

First time,

１０するとまた、デリラはサムソンにからみました。「あたしをからかったのね。うそつき。ねえ、どうしたらあんたを縛り上げることができるのか、教えてちょうだい。」１１「わかったよ。まだ使ったことのない新しい綱で縛ってみろ。普通の人と同じぐらいの力しか出せないよ。」１２それでデリラは、サムソンが眠ったころを見はからって新しい綱を取り出し、縛り上げました。前と同じように隣室に幾人かを潜ませ、またも大声で叫んだのです。「サムソン！ペリシテ人が捕まえに来たわ！」ところがサムソンは、まるでくもの巣でも払うように、綱を腕からはずしてしまったではありませんか。

１３「また、あたしをばかにして、とんでもないでたらめをおっしゃったのね。ねえ、お願い。ほんとうのことを教えて。どうしたらあんたを縛り上げることができるのよ。」「ああ、わかったよ。おれの髪をおまえの機に織り込んでみるんだな……。」１４デリラはサムソンが眠ったのを確かめ、言われたとおり、彼の髪の毛を機に織り込み、悲鳴をあげてみせました。「ペリシテ人よ！サムソン！」サムソンは目を覚ますと、髪をぐいと引っぱり、機をこわしてしまいました。 Judges 16:13-14

4. Delilah persisted and finally got the true secret to Samson’s strength.
１５デリラは泣き出しそうな声で言いました。「よくも、愛してるなんておっしゃれるわね。ちっとも私を信用してくださらないくせに。もう三度もだまされたわ。それでもまだ、力の秘密を教えてはくださらないのね。」１６１７寝ても覚めてもせがみ続けるので、うるさくてたまりません。サムソンはついに秘密を打ち明けました。「実はな、おれの頭にはかみそりが当てられたことがないんだよ。おれは、生まれる前から神様にささげられたナジル人だからな。もし髪がそり落とされたら、おれの力もおしまいさ。ほかの人と同じになるよ。」Judges 16:15-17

Samson was strong because his parents had dedicated him to the Lord.

Samson seems gullible for falling for Delilah’s charms over and over again. We all have our weaknesses and sin tempts all of us during our lives. The Bible says eventually our sins will catch up to us.

２３しかし、約束を破ったら、神様に罪を犯すのだから、必ず罰せられるぞ。Numbers 32:23

5. Once Delilah knew the true secret of Samson’s strength, she had his hair shaved off.

１８ついにほんとうのことを白状させたのです。デリラはさっそく、ペリシテ人の五人の領主を呼びにやりました。「もう一度お越しください。今度こそまちがいありませんわ。」
彼らは約束の金を用意してやって来ました。１９彼女はひざ枕でサムソンを眠らせると、床屋を呼び、髪をそり落とさせました。念のためサムソンをこづいてみると、確かに彼の力はなくなっているようです。２０もう大丈夫と、悲鳴をあげました。「ペリシテ人が捕まえに来たわ！サムソン！」サムソンは目を覚まし、「なあに、いつもの調子で片づけよう。一ゆすりすりゃ、思いのままさ」と考えました。神様が自分から去られたことに、気づいていなかったのです。２１ペリシテ人は彼を捕まえると、目をえぐり出し、ガザへ連れて行きました。そこで青銅の足かせをはめて牢に入れ、臼を引かせたのです。Judges 16:18-21

Delilah recognized the truth when she finally heard it from Samson. She didn’t test Samson this time. There had to be endearment between Samson and Delilah or he wouldn’t have gone to sleep with his head in Delilah’s lap.

Delilah probably thought Samson would be killed quickly, but instead he was captured and tortured. This was humiliating for Samson.

6. However, there is a little more to this story.

２２しかしその間にも、サムソンの髪は少しずつ伸びていました。 Judges 16:22

7. So, Samson was able to get his strength back and even though he had lost his eyes, he was able to get revenge on the Philistines.

Samson was humbled by his capture and physical condition. He prayed to God to help him and God answered Samson’s prayer.
8. God used Samson to begin the deliverance of Israel from the Philistines. This was prophesied when Samson was born.

9. Samson wasn’t perfect, but he is listed as a “hero of faith” in the New Testament.

B. The simple are people who live without much thought and are too lazy to change.

C. Mockers are people who rebel against God and are proud of their rebellion.

D. Fools are people who have made the choice to live without God and without advice from other people.

E. In modern English, fools are people who lack brains, but the Bible has a different meaning for the word “fool”. In the Bible, a fool may have a high I. Q. and be successful. Yet, they are foolish in God’s eyes. The Bible says one of worst insults you can give someone is to call them a “fool”.

F. A fool may think he is very clever, but his cleverness will eventually land him in trouble. If you are a fool, no set of rules can keep you out of trouble because in the end, you will go your own foolish way. A wise person should learn how to recognize a fool and then stay out of the fool’s path.

So, how does a person become a fool?

1. A person becomes a fool by ignoring God’s wisdom and trusting in their own.

Jephtah's Daughter

1. Jephtah was an Israelite warrior who came from a “dysfunctional family”. He left his hometown (Gilead) and started a new life in Tob.

１２さて、エフタはギルアデ出身の勇士でしたが、母親は遊女の身でした。父ギルアデには、正妻の産んだ数人の息子がいました。息子たちは成長すると、腹違いの兄弟エフタを、ギルアデから追い出してしまったのです。「遊女の子に、おやじの財産などこれっぽちもやるわけにはいかん」というわけです。３エフタは父の家を飛び出し、トブの地に移り住みました。まもなく、そこで不平分子の一団を従えるようになり、盗みを働いて日を送っていました。Judges 11:1-3

Jephtah was the illegitimate son of a prostitute and Jephtah’s half-brothers rejected him. Jephtah was on his own in a dangerous world, but Jephtah was a “survivor”. Other outcasts gathered around Jephtah and he became the leader of a large group of “adventurers”.

2. When Israel was attacked, the elders from Gilead asked Jephtah for help.

４そんな時、アモン人がイスラエルに宣戦布告をしてきたのです。５ギルアデの要人たちはエフタを呼びにやり、６指揮官としてアモン人と戦ってくれと頼み込みました。 Judges 11:4-6

3. The elders promised Jephtah that if he would help them fight, they would make Jephtah their leader.

７しかし、エフタは冷ややかに答えるばかりです。「私を憎むあまりに父の家から追い出しておきながら、どうして、ここへおいでになったんです。今さら困ったからって、よくも来られたもんですな。」８「どうしてもあんたに帰ってもらいたいんだ。もし総指揮官としてアモン軍と戦ってくれたら、ギルアデの王になってもらうよ。」９「ほんとうかね。とても信じられないな。」１０「神かけて誓うよ。」１１こう言われて、エフタも気を変え、彼らの願いどおり総指揮官となり、王になりました。この契約は、人々がミツパに集まった時、神様の前で結ばれたのです。 Judges 11:7-11

Jephtah knew if he was victorious, he would be a hero and welcomed back to his hometown.

4. The Lord gave Jephtah victory. Jephtah made a vow to the Lord.

２９その時、神の霊がエフタに下りました。エフタは兵を率いてギルアデとマナセの地を通り、ギルアデのミツパからアモン軍を攻撃しました。３０３１一方、エフタはこう神様に誓ったのです。「もし神様のお助けによってアモン人を征服でき、無事に帰還させていただけるなら、私の家から最初に迎えに出た者を、完全に焼き尽くすいけにえとしておささげいたします。」 Judges 11:29-31

In Old Testament times, God would send His Holy Spirit to help people accomplish specific tasks. The New Testament says that anyone who repents of their sins and is baptized in the name of Jesus Christ will receive the Holy Spirit.

In later times, the Israelites made strict teachings against sacrificing people.

１２神様はイスラエル国民のために、さらに次のような指示をモーセに与えました。「イスラエル人でも共に住む外国人でも、わが子を異教の神モレクのいけにえとする者は、必ず同胞の手で石打ちの刑に処せられる。Leviticus 20:1-2

And the Bible says that God doesn't want human sacrifices.

They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind. Jeremiah 7:31

5. Jephtah won the battle.

３２エフタは兵を率いてアモン人と戦い、勝利を収めました。３３そして、アロエルからミニテにかけての二十の町と、アベル・ケラミムに至るまで、くまなくアモン人を虐殺して回りました。ついにアモン人は、イスラエルに屈服したのです。 Judges 11:32-33

6. Unfortunately, when Jephtah got home, his daughter was the first thing he saw. Jephtah only had one child. So, his daughter was very precious to him.

In that time in Israel, women would meet returning military heroes and sing songs and recite poems to them.

7. Jephtah told his daughter about the vow and she accepted what had to be done.

３６「お父様、どうか神様にお誓いになったとおりになさってください。神様は敵のアモン人をやっつけて、こんなすばらしい勝利をもたらしてくださったのですもの。
Judges 11:36

Jephtah’s daughter accepted her fate with courage and dignity.

Jephtah was the one who made the vow, but he blamed his daughter for being the first person he saw. This is just like the “original sin” of Adam and Eve. Adam blamed Eve for eating the forbidden fruit. Eve blamed the snake for eating the fruit. No one wanted to accept responsibility for their actions. We still see this problem in many situations today!

8. Jephtah’s daughter asked him for one request.

３７ただ、二か月の間、私を女友だちと山に行かせ、さまよい歩かせてください。結婚もしないで終わることを泣き悲しみたいの。」３８「ああ、ああ。行くがいい。」そこで彼女は、自らの運命を友だちと共に嘆きながら、二か月間さまよったのです。
Judges 11:37-38

Jephtah’s daughter wanted to spend her last days with her friends instead of her father. Can you blame her?

9. When Jephtah’s daughter returned home, Jephtah sacrificed her.

３９二か月が過ぎて戻った娘を、エフタは誓願どおり神様にささげました。娘はついに結婚しなかったことになります。〔ただし、いけにえとして実際に殺されたのか、処女のままで神様に生涯をささげたのかは、不明です。〕こののちイスラエルでは、次のような慣習ができました。４０毎年四日間、若い娘たちは出て行って、エフタの娘のために嘆き悲しむのです。 Judges 11:39-40

Probably, Jephtah killed his daughter with a knife and then burned her on an altar. 

10. This is a tragic story about a man who didn’t put any thought into his faith. Jephtah’s daughter lost her life because of Jephtah’s foolishness. In Jephtah’s time, the Bible wasn’t available to common people, but in our day we can look for ourselves to see what is true.

Deborah and Jael

1. The Bible says God chose the Israelites to be the ancestors of the Savior. The people of Israel knew this and knew they should only worship God, but time after time they worshiped idols instead. When the Israelites worshiped idols, God would punish them by allowing other nations to conquer Israel.

2. Deborah was a woman who was a judge and prophetess in Israel during one of these times. Deborah is the only woman who is listed as a judge in the Book of Judges. In Bible times, judges were considered tribal leaders of their countries. During peace times, judges settled disputes among the people. During war times, judges gathered the people to fight against their enemies.

Deborah is also described as a prophetess. The words “prophet or prophetess” don’t mean that these people could predict future events. Prophets and Prophetesses heard messages from God and told them to the people.

Deborah didn’t have to force the Israelites to listen to her. Prophets and prophetesses were seen as God’s messengers. So, the people of Israel listened to what Deborah said.

When Deborah lived, Israel was controlled by Jabin, King of Canaan. A man named Sisera was the commander of the Canaanite army. Sisera had cruelly oppressed the Israelites for 20 years.

Deborah means “bee” in Hebrew. It also means a “spirited or fiery” woman.

3. Deborah summoned a man named Barak to go fight against Sisera, but Barak was afraid to go without Deborah. Barak was afraid because Sisera had a heavily armed and large army. Israel didn’t have a trained army. Israel relied on tribes to assemble and fight together for her defense. Barak’s army had fewer people, less organization, and inferior weapons. So, Barak didn’t want to go into a war that he couldn’t win.

Barak means lightning—(It is different from President Obama’s name, Barack. Barack means blessed.)

4. So, Deborah told Barak that she would go with him.
９「いいでしょう。いっしょに行きましょう。ただし、今のうちに言っておきますが、シセラを倒す栄誉は、おまえではなく、一人の女が受けることになりますよ。」こう言って、デボラはバラクとともにケデシュへ向かいました。１０バラクが、ゼブルンとナフタリの人々から義勇兵を募ると、一万人がケデシュに結集しました。デボラもいっしょです。 Judges 4:9-10

Deborah was the type of person who could inspire loyalty in other people. Deborah convinced Barak that he could take a big risk and succeed. Deborah’s personality and faith in God gave Barak courage to face overwhelming odds. Deborah told Barak that Sisera wouldn’t be handed over to him, but to a woman instead.

5. Deborah and Barak sang a song on that day.

6. Sisera gathered his troops to fight against Barak and Deborah. The Lord sent a downpour. So, Sisera’s army got bogged down in mud and swept away in a flood. Barak’s foot soldiers were able to defeat an army of 900 chariots!

１３鉄の戦車を九百台も備えた全軍を動員し、ハロシェテ・ハゴイムからキション川へと進みました。１４その時、デボラはバラクに言いました。「さあ、今こそ攻撃のチャンスよ。神様が先頭に立っておられます。もうシセラのいのちは、いただいたも同然よ。」そこでバラクは、一万人を率いてタボル山を下り、戦いに臨みました。１５神様が兵も戦車隊もパニック状態に陥れたので、敵は総くずれとなり、シセラは戦車から飛び降り、走って逃げ出すしまつでした。１６バラクの軍隊は、敵兵と戦車をハロシェテ・ハゴイムまで追いつめ、ついに全滅させました。一人も生き残った者はいません。 Judges 4:13-16

(It’s interesting to note that the Canaanites worshiped an idol named Baal instead of the Lord. Baal was considered to be the God of storms and weather, but the Canaanites lost the battle because of a storm and weather!)

7. Sisera fled to the tent of a woman named Jael. In those times, it wasn’t considered ethical for a man to enter a woman’s tent unless he was married to her. So, Sisera probably thought a woman’s tent was a good hiding place because no one would look for him there. Sisera wasn’t safe in Jael’s tent because Jael killed Sisera while he was sleeping.

１７ところがシセラだけは、ケニ人ヘベルの妻ヤエルのテントに逃げ込みました。ハツォルの王ヤビンとヘベルの氏族との間には、相互援助協定が結ばれていたからです。１８ヤエルはシセラを迎えに出て、「まあ、シセラ様、どうぞ、お入りくださいませ。ここならもう安心、ご心配には及びませんわ」と言いました。そしてテントに入ったシセラに、毛布をかけて休ませました。１９シセラは、「頼む、水をくれないか。のどがからからだ」と訴えました。ヤエルは牛乳を与え、また毛布をかけてやりました。２０シセラは、「お願いだ、テントの入口で見張っていてくれ。もし、だれかがわしを捜しに来ても、『ここにはいない』と追っ払ってくれ」と頼みました。２１ところがヤエルは、先のとがったテントの杭と槌を手に取るや、眠っているシセラに忍び寄り、こめかみ目がけて打ち込んだのです。杭は地面をも刺し通し、シセラの息の根を止めました。彼は、疲労困憊のあまり眠りこけていたからです。Judges 4:17-21

There are similarities to Jael and King David as he fought Goliath as a young boy:

Both Jael and David were smaller and weaker than their opponents
Both Jael and David used unusual weapons (David used a slingshot)
Both Jael and David used their mind instead of standard military tactics
Both Jael and David slaughtered their enemies (David cut off Goliath’s head)

Many people have heard the story of David and Goliath. Now, you know the story of Jael and Sisera! 

Jael means wild gazelle—a good name for a woman in a nomadic tribe

8. Barak came by looking for Sisera and Jael showed Barak Sisera’s dead body.

Sisera fell to a woman—Jael instead of Barak—just as Deborah had predicted. In those days, it was humiliating for or a strong warrior to fall to a woman.

9. The Israelites grew stronger until they were able to destroy Jabin, the Canaanite king.

10. Israel became stronger because the Israelites put their faith in God and He helped them. Deborah and Barak gave God glory for the victory.

1. The Book of Joshua tells us that 2 spies from Israel, went to Jericho to see if their country would be able to conquer it. When the spies reached Jericho, they decided to stay with a prostitute.

2. The King of Jericho heard that spies were in his land. He went to Rahab and asked her to send the spies out to him:

3. Rahab lied to her king and risked her life to save the spies. Why would she do this? What made her want to protect of her country’s enemies? Rahab told the spies that the Lord had revealed His plan to her.

Rahab believed what she had heard about the Lord. We call this “faith”.

4. Rahab asked the spies for a favor:

１２１３だから、お願いよ。一つだけ聞いてほしいの。エリコを占領する時、いのちだけは助けてもらえないかしら。両親や、兄弟、それにその家族もね。そのことを、あんたたちの神様の聖なる御名にかけて、誓ってくださいな。あんたたちを助けてあげたんだもの、これくらいのことは聞いてくれたっていいでしょ。」１４二人はうなずきました。「われわれのことをしゃべらなければ、あんたも家族も傷一つ負わんよ。いのちにかけても、あんたを守ってやる。」 Joshua 2:12-14

The spies agreed to protect Rahab and her family. Rahab had faith in what the Lord had done, but she also had faith in what the Lord was going to do.

5. Rahab told the spies to go outside of the city and wait 3 days before they came back.

１５ラハブの家は町の城壁の上にあったので、二人は綱で窓からつり降ろしてもらいました。１６ラハブは二人に注意しました。「山へお逃げよ。あんたたちを捜してる連中が引き返して来るまで、まる三日間、隠れていればいいわ。それから、お帰りなさい。」

6. The spies told Rahab that she needed to bring her entire family to her house and hang a scarlet cord in the window. If she did these things, she and her family would be protected.

１７１８二人は別れぎわにこう言い残しました。「いいかい。このひもを窓から垂らすんだ。そして、ご両親や兄弟など身内の人はみな、この家でいっしょにいるんだ。そうでなければ、何が起きても責任はもてないよ。１９一歩でもこの家から外へ出たら、保証しないよ。しかし、この家にいるかぎり、一人だって殺されたり、傷ついたりはしない。はっきり約束しよう。２０ただし、もしあんたが裏切れば、誓いは無効だ。いいね。」 Joshua 2:17-20

It wasn’t enough for Rahab to believe that her family would be safe. Rahab had to take action to ensure their safety.

7. Rahab expressed her faith by putting the cord in the window.

２１「そのとおりにするわ。」こうしてラハブは、窓から赤いひもを垂らしたままにしておきました。Joshua 2:21

8. Rahab’s faith saved her and her family.

１７住民は皆殺しだ。だが売春婦のラハブと、その家の中の者たちは助けてやれ。ラハブはわれわれのスパイをかくまってくれたのだ。 Joshua 6:17

9. Joshua had Rahab and her family brought out to a safe place. Then, the Israelites burned the city of Jericho.

10. Rahab lived during Old Testament times, but she is mentioned in the New Testament. Rahab is one of 4 women listed in Christ’s genealogy and here we learn that she was King David’s great-great grandmother:

12. Rahab’s faith and actions are mentioned in the book of James

James reminds us that our faith can’t just be words. If we don’t exercise our faith, then it is worthless. Rahab’s faith shows the potential that we all have. It also shows us that we should not judge. Who would expect great faith from a prostitute? Yet, God blessed her by making her an ancestor of Christ.

A. What is Easter?

Easter is the time Christians remember Jesus’ death and celebrate His
Resurrection. God’s plan of redemption is for Jesus to pay for the sins of every person. This plan was prophesied in the Old Testament and the events recorded in the Bible perfectly reveal this event. After Jesus’ miraculous birth, He lived on the earth for 33 years. He taught many lessons and performed many miracles to prove that He was the Savior that fulfilled the Old Testament prophesies. When Jesus was 33 years old, he was arrested, beaten, and crucified. He was buried in a tomb and resurrected after 3 days. Jesus’ Resurrection Day was the first Easter.

B. Why was Jesus Arrested?

First, it’s important to understand that Jesus was a Jewish man and he was subject to the Jewish laws. It is also important to understand that the area where Jesus lived was controlled by Rome during this time. So, Jesus (and all the Jewish people) was subject to the Roman laws in addition to the Jewish laws. Jesus was misunderstood and hated by the Jewish leaders and they were looking for a way to get rid of him. They were able to use the Jewish and Roman laws to have Jesus arrested.

C. How come the Jewish leaders didn’t like Jesus? The Jewish leaders didn’t like Jesus for 4 reasons:

1. Jesus said the condition of people’s hearts was more important than following the Jewish laws. Here’s one example:

2. Jesus performed many miracles and had many followers. The Jewish leaders were jealous of Jesus. So, they were looking for a way to get rid of Him. Here’s one example:

3. Jesus said He was the Son of God and the Savior. The Jewish leaders accused Jesus of blasphemy because they didn’t believe this to be true. (Blasphemy was a Jewish crime. Blasphemy is when a person claims to be God or have God’s majesty or authority.)

4. The Jewish leaders told the Roman officials that Jesus claimed to be a king and this was a crime against Roman laws. Jesus did, in fact claim to be a heavenly king, but he never claimed to be an earthly king.

３３ピラトは官邸内に戻ると、イエスを呼び寄せて尋ねました。「おまえはユダヤ人の王か。どうなんだ。ええっ。」３４「はて、王といわれましても……。普通の意味での王ですか。それとも、ユダヤ人の言う王でしょうか。」３５ピラトは頭にきて言い返しました。「なにっ！私がユダヤ人だとでも言うつもりか。おまえをここに引っ立てて来たのは、ユダヤ人と祭司長どもなんだぞ。いったいどうしたのだ。何をしでかしたのか。」３６「わたしは地上の王ではありません。もし地上の王であったら、逮捕された時、弟子たちは戦いをいどんだでしょう。わたしの国はこの世のものではないのです。」３７「なんだと、それじゃあ、やっぱりおまえは王なんだなっ！」「いかにもそのとおりです。そのためにこそ、わたしは生まれたのです。そう、この世に真理を伝えるために。真理を愛する者はみな、わたしに従うのです。」 John 18:33-37

So, Jesus was arrested for 2 crimes: blasphemy and claiming to be a king.

D. Was Jesus guilty of these crimes?

The Bible says Jesus is the Son of God and He proved this by performing many miracles. His greatest miracle was finally rising from death on the first Easter. So, if Jesus really was God’s Son, He didn’t commit blasphemy. Also, Jesus never claimed to be an earthly king, so he was not a threat to the Roman government and did not break the Roman law.

E. Why did Jesus have to die?

God’s plan was for a Savior to pay for the sins of all people. The Old Testament has many prophecies about the Savior. Jesus Christ perfectly fulfilled all of these prophecies. Jesus’ death was part of God’s plan for salvation for the world. Isaiah 53 is one Old Testament prophecy about the Savior’s death.

F. How can we know if Jesus really rose from the dead?

1. No one has ever found Jesus’ body. The Jewish and Roman leaders searched for it, but they never found it. The tomb was empty except for the linen strips and burial cloth that were used to bury Jesus.

３４私たちは、それを確かめようと、二人して墓に急ぎました。私はペテロより速かったので、先に着きました。５すぐさま身をかがめてのぞき込むと、亜麻布が見えます。けれども、中には入りませんでした。６続いてシモン・ペテロが駆けつけ、ためらわず中に入りました。彼もやっぱり、亜麻布と、７そこからやや離れた所に、イエスの頭に巻いたはずの布がそのままの形で置いてあるのを見ました。 John 20:3-7

The fact that Jesus’ body was never found is also recorded in other history books from that time.

2. Roman guards were stationed to guard Jesus’ tomb and they put the Roman seal on the tomb. If anyone was caught breaking the Roman seal, they would be executed. It’s very unlikely that anyone would have risked their life to take Jesus’ body away. After the guards discovered that Jesus’ body was missing, they told the priests.

3. Jesus’ body was placed in a solid rock tomb and an extremely large stone was rolled down a slope and against the entrance of the tomb. (History tells us that several men had to use levers to roll the stones in front of the tombs because they weighed over 4000 pounds.)

3 days after Jesus died, the stone had been moved. There is no way a human could move the stone because it was so heavy and it would have had to been rolled up the slope. So, how did the stone get moved?

4. Many people saw Jesus after His Resurrection. These people included all of His disciples, some of His followers, His enemies, and large crowds of people.

８二人は、恐ろしさに震えながらも、一方ではあふれる喜びを抑えることができませんでした。一刻も早くこのことを弟子たちに伝えようと、一目散に駆けだしました。９すると、そこへ突然イエスがお姿を現わされ、目の前にお立ちになり、「おはよう」とあいさつなさいました。二人はイエスの前にひれ伏し、御足を抱いて礼拝しました。１０イエスは言われました。「こわがらなくてもいいのですよ。行って、わたしの兄弟たちに、すぐガリラヤへ行くように言いなさい。そこでわたしに会えるのです。」 Matthew 28:8-10

After the Resurrection, the disciples weren’t afraid anymore.

All of the disciples, except for John, were killed because of they told people about Jesus’ resurrection. They gave their lives, so we can know the truth about Jesus. Why would they risk death and torture unless they knew Jesus had really risen from death?

G. Why is Easter important?

If Jesus had stayed in His tomb, it would mean He was the same as any other man. However, Jesus didn’t stay in His tomb. So, He must be different from other men. The Bible says Jesus is the Son of God and Savior for all people.

1. Why is Easter always on a different day?

When Christianity spread through the world, the Anglican (English) Church fathers set the rules for determining the date for Easter.

Here are the rules:

1. Easter must be on a Sunday.
2. Easter must be on the 1st Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox (March 21). This full moon is called the Pashal Full Moon. (Pashal is the Hebrew word for Passover. Jesus was betrayed during the Passover Feast.)

2. Why do Christians have Easter Egg Hunts?

Proverbs 22:6 is a popular Bible verse about raising children:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”

So, how can we train our children? The Bible has many verses and stories that we can use to help us raise our children. In this lesson, we will look at these verses.

1. Love and take care of your children. Treat your children the way you be treated. This is common sense, but many people fail to give their children love and basic necessities. It’s also important to love your children unconditionally. Children need to know that you will love them even when they make mistakes or disappoint you.

1. Tamar was Judah’s daughter-in-law. (Judah was one of Joseph’s brothers). Judah had 3 sons, Er, Onan, and Shelah.

１そのころ、ユダは家を出てアドラムに移り、ヒラという男といっしょに住むことになりました。２そこでカナン人シュアの娘を見そめ、結婚したのです。３‐５彼らはケジブに住み,エル、オナン、シェラという三人の息子をもうけました。子供たちの名前は母親がつけたものです。ただし、エルは別で、父親がつけました。Genesis 38:1-5

2. Tamar was married to Judah’s oldest son, Er. The Bible says Er was wicked and the Lord put him to death.

６長男エルが成人すると、ユダはタマルという娘と結婚させました。７ところが、エルはひねくれ者で神様の怒りを買い、いのちを落としてしまったのです。 Genesis 38:6-7

“Tamar” means “date palm” which is a symbol of food, strength, shade, and life.
“Er” is “Re” spelled backwards. “Re” is the Hebrew word for evil.

3. In Bible times, it was customary for Jewish men to marry their brother’s widows in order to provide heirs for them. This is called the “Levirate Law”. The Levirate Law was a practical way to ensure a woman’s right to have a child and to keep property within the family.

So, Tamar married Onan, Judah’s second son.

８ユダは弟のオナンに言いました。「おまえはタマルと結婚しなければいけない。それが、兄に先立たれた弟の義務なんだ。そうして子供ができたら、兄の跡を継がせるのだ。」９しかしオナンは、自分の子として育てられないような子供なら、いらないと思いました。それで、結婚はしましたが、いっしょに寝る時はいつも、子供ができないようにベッドの上に射精してしまうのです。兄のものになる子供を産ませたくなかったのです。Genesis 38:8-9

“Onan” means “the virile one” which is ironic because Onan didn’t give Tamar children.

Onan didn’t want to give Tamar a child because then the child would receive the same inheritance that Onan would receive when Judah died. So, what Onan did was selfish.

Deuteronomy 25:9-10 describes the punishment for failing to obey the Levirate Law:

９長老の見ている前でその男に近寄り、くつを脱がせ、顔につばして言ってやりなさい。『兄弟の家を立てないような人は、こうなるのよ。』１０そのあと彼の家は、『くつを脱がされた者の家』と呼ばれます。

This action had a lot of symbolism: the foot was a symbol of male genitals, the sandal was a symbol of female reproductive organs, and the spit was a symbol of semen.

This punishment doesn’t sound like a big deal to us, but it was a public disgrace in Tamar’s time.

The Bible says Onan died because of his selfish act.

4. Judah’s youngest son, Shelah was still young. So, Judah sent Tamar back to her family until Shelah was old enough to marry.

5. When Shelah was old enough to marry, Judah didn’t send for Tamar. Maybe he forgot about Tamar? Maybe he thought she was responsible for Er and Onan’s deaths? So, Tamar decided to take action. She came up with a plan to get what was legally hers.

Judah wasn’t able to recognize his daughter-in-law because in those days, prostitutes covered their faces with a veil.

A man’s seal, cord, and staff were personal items that could easily be identified.

We don’t know how Tamar knew Judah would solicit a prostitute. Maybe Tamar knew Judah’s habits and character? After all, Judah had sold his own brother Joseph as a slave.

２６２７「おい、見ろよ。」ユダが叫びました。「イシュマエル人が来るぞ。ヨセフのやつを売り飛ばすってのはどうだい。殺すのは、何てったって気持ちのいいもんじゃない。自分たちの手で殺したりすれば、あとでいやな思いをするだろうよ。虫の好かないやつだけど、やっぱり弟なんだからな。」みな賛成です。Genesis 37:26-27

What Tamar did seems morally wrong to us, but Tamar’s actions were legally and morally right according to the standards of her culture. Tamar did what she did to get what belonged to her.

6. 3 months later, Tamar was accused of prostitution when her pregnancy was discovered.

２４さて、それから三か月ほどしたある日、義理の娘タマルに子供ができたという報告が届きました。未亡人の身でいながら、ふしだらなことをしたに違いないというのです。「けしからん。ここへ連れて来て焼き殺してしまえ。」ユダはかんかんになって叫びました。

7. Since Judah was the head of his tribe, he had the right to pass judgment on Tamar. Judah wanted Tamar burned to death, but she was able to save herself by showing Judah his seal, cord, and staff.

When Judah saw his personal items, he had to admit that he was wrong and Tamar was right and that she had acted according to the law.

8. Tamar gave birth to twin sons, Perez and Zerah. Perez is one of King David’s ancestors.

“Perez” means “he who pushes through”.
“Zerah” means “scarlet”.

9. Tamar risked her life to get a child and her dead husband’s inheritance. These were her rights under Jewish law, but Judah wouldn’t give them to her. In a way, Tamar “redeemed” Judah from his sin of not giving her what belonged to her. Tamar is an ancestor of Jesus and is one of only 5 women listed in his genealogy. Bible scholars consider Tamar to be a prefigure of Jesus, the Great Redeemer.

Today, this could be a woman who has taken good care of her family so her husband can focus on his work and have time to help other people.

The Perfect Woman--Part I--From Proverbs 31

1. This proverb has verses about the “perfect woman”. This proverb is still useful for us today. Women can use it as an example of the way they should live. Men can use it as an example of the kind of woman they should marry.

This proverb describes the “perfect woman”. None of us are perfect! But, God can change us into the women and men He wants us to be.

2. How much is a “perfect woman” worth?

１０ほんとうに良い妻を見つけたら、宝石よりもすばらしいものを手に入れたのです。

In Bible times, not everyone could afford to burn a lamp at night. So, this woman was financially secure.
Also, in Bible times, a candle burning at night meant you would welcome travelers into your home. So, this woman was available to help other people, as well as her own family.
Today, this could be a woman who has managed her money well and is able to give money to charities. Also, this could be a woman who welcomes people into her home on a regular basis.

She is holding a distaff and spindle. These were used for spinning thread. They are also symbols of being practical.
Today, this could be a woman who likes to sew or who shops for bargains.

She opens her arms to the poor and needy.
Today, this could be a woman who has a kind heart and helps other people.

13.２１家族みんなの冬服をちゃんと用意してあるので、冬がきてもあわてません。
Proverbs 31:21

She is not afraid of the snow because her household is clothed in scarlet. Scarlet material was very expensive in Bible times. So, this woman made sure her family had nice clothes.
Today, this could be a woman who plans ahead so her family has nice clothes when they need them.

Proverbs 31:22

She makes coverings for her bed. It also says she is clothed in fine linen and purple. (Fine linen and purple meant she wore expensive and dignified clothes.)
Today, this could be a woman who quilts, knits, or crochets. This could be a woman who takes pride in her appearance.

These verses tell us that she took good care of her family. They also tell us she took care of herself.

Bathsheba

1. David was King of Israel. Israel was in a war, but David stayed at his palace. While he was there, he noticed Bathsheba.

１翌年の春のことです。再び戦いが始まり、ダビデは、ヨアブの率いるイスラエル軍を送り込んで、アモン人壊滅を計りました。イスラエル軍はたちまちラバの町を包囲しましたが、ダビデ自身はエルサレムにとどまっていました。２ある夕暮れのことです。寝つかれないままに、ダビデは宮殿の屋上をぶらついていました。ふと町の方を見やると、入浴中の美しい婦人が目にとまったのです。３さっそく人をやり、その女のことを探らせました。そして、エリアムの娘、ウリヤの妻バテ・シェバであることを突き止めたのです。2 Samuel 11:1-3

2. Since kings usually went to war with their soldiers, Bathsheba probably didn’t know that she was being watched. We only know that David wasn’t where he was supposed to be (war) and he was tempted by Bathsheba. Even when David found out that Bathsheba had a husband, he still wanted her. (Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, was fighting in the war.)

４ダビデは女を召し入れました。忍んで来た彼女と、一夜を共にしたのです。彼女はちょうど、月経後のきよめの儀式を終えたところでした。こうして彼女は家に帰りました。 2 Samuel 11:4

David was the king. So, Bathsheba probably had no choice but to go to him.

3. Bathsheba found out that she was pregnant with the King’s baby. Jewish law said that Bathsheba and King David should be stoned to death. (人妻と姦淫を犯せば、男も女も共に死刑だ。Leviticus 20:10)

Bathsheba sent word to David that she was pregnant.

５しかし、このことで妊娠したことを知ると、人をやってダビデに知らせました。2 Samuel 11:5

4. Oops! David hadn’t planned for Bathsheba to get pregnant! Sin always has a consequence. David had to decide what to do. David decided to cover up his sin and shift the responsibility of the baby to Uriah.

David had Bathsheba’s husband brought home. David thought if Uriah spent time at home with Bathsheba, people would think the baby belonged to Uriah.

６何とかしなければなりません。ダビデは急いでヨアブに伝令を送り、「ヘテ人ウリヤを帰還させよ」と命じました。７戻ったウリヤに、ダビデは、ヨアブや兵士の様子、戦況などを尋ねました。８そして、家へ帰ってゆっくり骨休めをせよ、と勧めてやったのです。みやげの品も持たせました。９ところが、ウリヤは自宅に戻らず、王の家来たちとともに、宮殿の門のそばで夜を過ごしたのです。１０ダビデはそれを知ると、さっそく呼んで尋ねました。「いったい、どうしたのだ。長く家から離れていたというのに、なぜ、昨夜は細君のもとへ戻らなかったのだ。」１１「恐れながら陛下、神の箱も、総司令官も、その配下の方々も、みな戦場で野宿しておられます。それなのに、どうして私だけが家に帰って飲み食いし、妻と寝たりできましょう。誓って申し上げます。そんな罪深いことをいたす気は、毛頭ございません。」１２「よかろう。では今夜も、ここにとどまるがよい。あすは軍務に戻ってもらうから。」こうして、ウリヤは宮殿から離れませんでした。１３ダビデは彼を食事に招き、酒をすすめて酔わせました。しかし何としても、彼は自宅に帰ろうとはせず、その夜もまた、宮殿の門のわきで寝たのです。 2 Samuel 11:6-13

David never imagined that Uriah was so honorable that he would refuse to go to his wife while his fellow countrymen were at war.

5. So, David had to come up with another plan. This time he was desperate. David sent Uriah back to war with a letter for his commander.

１４翌朝、ついにダビデはヨアブあてに手紙をしたため、それをウリヤに持たせました。１５その書面で、ウリヤを激戦地の最前線に送り、彼だけ残して引き揚げ、戦死させるように、と指示したのです。１６ヨアブはウリヤを、包囲中の町の最前線に送り込みました。町を守っているのは、敵の中でもえり抜きの兵ぞろいだと知っていたからです。１７案の定、ウリヤは数人のイスラエル兵士とともに戦死しました。2 Samuel 11:14-17

Because of David’s command, Uriah and other innocent men were killed in battle. Sin always has a consequence and not just for the people that commit the sin. Innocent people end up getting hurt when people sin.
David never meant for innocent people to die, but sin is a slippery slope. David saw a beautiful woman and pursued her. If Bathsheba had been single, he could have made her his wife without any problems. By the time David found out that Bathsheba was married, his lust for her had consumed him and he had to have her. The sin of lust led to the sin of murder.

6. Bathsheba mourned the death of her husband and then she went to live with David. David thought that only he and Bathsheba knew the truth about the baby. David forgot one thing: You can’t hide the truth from God. The Bible says all the things that happened displeased the Lord.

２６バテ・シェバは夫が戦死したことを知り、喪に服しました。２７喪が明けると、ダビデは彼女を妻として宮殿に迎え、男の子をもうけたのです。しかし神様は、ダビデがしたことに非常に立腹なさいました。 2 Samuel 11:26-27

7. Nathan was a prophet of God. The Lord sent Nathan to David and Nathan told David a story:

１２神様は預言者ナタンを遣わし、ダビデにこんな話を聞かせました。「ある町に二人の人がおりました。一人は大金持ちで、たくさん羊や山羊を持っていました。３もう一人はとても貧乏で、財産といえば、苦労してやっと手に入れた、雌の子羊一頭だけでした。その子羊を、子供たちも大そうかわいがり、食事の時など、彼は自分の皿やコップにまで口をつけさせるほどでした。まるで実の娘みたいに、しっかり腕に抱いて寝るのでした。４そんなある日、金持ちのほうに客が一人ありました。ところが、客をもてなすのに、自分の群れの子羊を使うのは惜しいとばかり、貧しい男の雌の子羊を取り上げ、それを焼いてふるまったのです。」2 Samuel 12:1-4

8. David didn’t understand that the story was about him, but Nathan told David that he knew exactly what David had done.

５ここまで聞くと、ダビデはかんかんに腹を立てました。「生ける神様に誓うぞ。そんなことをする奴は死刑だ！６償いもさせろ。貧しい男に子羊四頭を返すのだ。なにしろ、盗んだだけでなく、そいつには、まるであわれみの心というものがないんだからな。」７すると、ナタンはダビデに言いました。「陛下です。陛下こそ、その大金持ちなのです！イスラエルの神様は、こう仰せられます。『わたしはおまえをイスラエルの王とし、サウルの迫害から救い出してやった。８そして、サウルの宮殿や妻たち、イスラエルとユダの王国も与えてやったではないか。なお足りないというなら、もっともっと多くのものを与えてやっただろう。９それなのに、どうして、わたしのおきてをないがしろにして、こんな恐ろしい罪を犯したのか。おまえはウリヤを殺し、その妻を奪ったのだ。１０よいか、これからは殺害の恐怖が常におまえの家を脅かす。ウリヤの妻を奪って、わたしの顔につばするようなまねをしたからだ。2 Samuel 12:5-10

God is smarter than we are. David told Nathan that the rich man should be killed. With these words, David pronounced his own death sentence. At this point, David could have had Nathan killed so his sin wouldn’t be exposed. Nathan risked his life when he said these words to the king. It was up to David to decide what to do next.

9. David boldly admitted his sin to Nathan and to the Lord. David honestly confessed his sin and expected to die for it, but God chose to show David mercy and grace.

１３「私は神様に罪を犯しました」と、ダビデはナタンに告白しました。ナタンは答えました。「そのとおりだ。しかし、神様はその罪を赦してくださった。だから、罰を受けて死ぬことはない。2 Samuel 12:13

God never brings judgment without offering grace and healing. This is a recurring theme throughout the Bible

８しかし、私たちがまだ罪人であった時に、神様はキリスト様を遣わしてくださいました。そのキリスト様が私たちのために死んだことにより、神様は私たちに、大きな愛を示してくださったのです。Romans 5:8

10. At the same time that the Lord showed mercy to David by letting him live, Nathan pronounced that David’s baby would die.

１４ただし、神に敵する者たちに、神様をあなどる絶好の機会を与えたので、生まれてくる子供は死ぬ。」 2 Samuel 12:14

We can’t understand why God chose for the baby to die. We can never fully understand God’s ways.

８わたしの計画はおまえたちの考えつく計画とは違い、わたしの思いはおまえたちの思いと同じではない。９天が地より高いように、わたしの道はおまえたちの道より高く、わたしの思いはおまえたちの思いより高い。Isaiah 55:8-9

11. David prayed and asked God to let the baby live, but the baby died after 7 days.

１５こののち、ナタンは家へ戻りました。神様は、バテ・シェバが産んだ子を、重い病気にかからせました。１６ダビデはその子が助かるように祈り求め、断食して、一晩中、神様の前で地にひれ伏していました。１７国の指導者たちは、身を起こして、いっしょに食事をとるよう、しきりに頼みましたが、頑として聞き入れません。１８七日目に、赤ん坊はとうとう息を引き取りました。側近の者は、そのことをダビデに告げるのをためらいました。「陛下は、あのお子が病気になったことで、あんなにおこころを乱された。亡くなったと聞いたら、いったいどうなさるだろう」と心配したのです。１９しかしダビデは、ひそひそ話し合っている彼らの様子から、何が起こったかを悟りました。「赤ん坊は死んだのか。」「はい、お亡くなりになりました。」2 Samuel 12:15-19

12. For the rest of his life, David knew that he was alive for one reason and one reason only: the grace of God. God’s grace changed David's life and David had a new relationship with God. David wrote Psalm 51 during this time. This Psalm is a plea for forgiveness and restoration.

13.ダビデはバテ・シェバと姦通し、その夫ウリヤを殺した。そこへ預言者ナタンが来て、神の審判を告げた。その時のダビデの作。１ああ、愛と恵みにあふれる神様、私をあわれんで、恐ろしい罪の汚点をぬぐい去ってください。２どうか私を洗い、この罪からきよめて、もう一度、潔白な身としてください。３私は、自分がどんな恥ずべきことをしたか、よく存じております。そのことで夜も昼も責めさいなまれているのです。 Psalm 51:1-3

David didn’t blame anyone else for his sin.

14.そのことで夜も昼も責めさいなまれているのです。４私はあなたに、ただあなたに罪を犯し、この恐ろしいことをしでかしました。一部始終をご存じの神様が下す判決に、誤りはございません。 Psalm 51:4

David knew he had sinned against the Lord.

15.汚れをきよめる血を振りかけてください。再び身も心もきれいになれるように、私を洗ってください。雪よりも白くなりたいのです。 Psalm 51:7

Hyssop was used to purify people who came in contact with a dead body. David saw his sin as a deadly disease that only God could cure.

16. 罰は受けます。でもそののち、喜びを取り戻させてください。 Psalm 51:8

David prayed for what was broken to heal.

17. どうか、いつまでもこの罪を見すえないで、視界から消し去ってください。Psalm 51:9

David prayed for forgiveness. He asked God to blot out his sins.

18.ああ神様。どうか、きよい思いと正しい願いでいっぱいの、新しいきれいな心にしてください。 Psalm 51:10

David asked God for a clean heart.

19.私を見限って、永久に御前から追放しないでください。聖霊を私から取り上げないでください。 Psalm 51:11

David prayed for a renewed relationship with God.

20.救いの喜びを再びあざやかにして、心から神様に従おうとする思いに満たしてください。 Psalm 51:12

David prayed for restoration.

21.そうすれば、私のように罪深いほかの人間にも、神様の道を教えてやります。きっと悔い改めて、神様に立ち返ることでしょう。１４１５ああ神様。頼みの綱はあなただけですから、どうか死刑の宣告を下さないでください。助けてさえいただければ、私の舌はゆるみ、神様の赦しを高らかに歌いだすでしょう。ああ、どれほど神様をほめたたえますことか。 Psalm 51:13-15

True repentance leads to action. David committed himself to serving God and telling other people about Him.

22. David and Bathsheba’s story doesn’t end with the consequences of their sin. Their story is a story of grace, restoration, and healing.
After the baby died, David worshipped the Lord and comforted Bathsheba. Bathsheba had another son, Solomon.

２０すると、ダビデは身を起こし、体を洗い、髪をとかし、服を着替え、神の天幕に入って、神様を礼拝したのです。それから宮殿に帰って、食事をしました。２１これには、家来のほうが、あっけにとられました。「陛下のなさりようはどうも解せません。お子様が生きておいでの間は、泣いて断食までなさいましたのに、亡くなられたとたん、嘆きもなさらず、食事までなさるとは……。」２２「子供が生きておる間は、断食をして泣いた。『もしかしたら、神様があわれんで、回復させてくださるかもしれない』と思ったからだ。２３しかし、死んでしまった今、断食して何になる。もう、あの子を呼び戻せはしない。わしがあの子のところへ行くことはできても、あの子はここへは戻って来ないのだ。」２４ダビデはバテ・シェバを慰めました。彼女は、またみごもり、やがて男の子を産みました。その子はソロモンと名づけられました。その子を愛した神様は、2 Samuel 12:20-24

Solomon is known as one of the wisest men ever born. He succeeded his father as King and he is one of Jesus Christ’s ancestors. He also wrote Ecclesiastes, the Song of Solomon, and many Proverbs.

23. Bathsheba was a common woman who won the heart of the King of Israel. She gave birth to one of the wisest men ever to be born and she made sure he inherited his father’s throne. Bathsheba wasn’t perfect, but God gave her a place in history as one of Jesus Christ’s ancestors and as King David’s wife.

This is a good lesson for us. We don’t have to be perfect for God to use us. We’ve all sinned and fallen short of the God’s plan for our lives and yet God has great plans for us.

The Bible tells us some things about Heaven, but not everything. Heaven is still a mystery to us! We do know that Heaven will be a good place because the Bible says God has a good plan for us here on earth and for eternity.

“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

In this lesson, we’ll look at what the Bible tells us about Heaven.

1. The Bible tells Believers not to worry about their place in Heaven. The Bible says Jesus is preparing a place for His followers and he will come back to take them there.

10. The Bible doesn’t reveal everything about Heaven. We don’t know why. Maybe God knows that our mortal minds can’t imagine or conceive how wonderful it will be. The Bible tells us that we won’t be able to fully understand Heaven’s glory until we are there:

1. A man named Elkanah had 2 wives: Hannah and Peninnah. (So, you know there will be some trouble!)

Elkanah means “God has purchased” or “belongs to God”.

2. Every year, Elkanah and his family went to the temple to make sacrifices.

3. Peninnah made Hannah’s life miserable. She provoked Hannah until she would cry.

4. Finally, Hannah was so upset that she prayed to the Lord and made a vow.

5. Hannah was praying so fervently, the priest thought she was drunk!

6. After Hannah spoke with the priest, she looked happy.

Hannah was happy, but her circumstances hadn’t changed. Hannah was happy because she had faith that the Lord would answer her prayer.

7. Elkinah took his family home. God answered Hannah’s prayer and gave her a son, Samuel.

8. Hannah kept Samuel at home until he was weaned.

9. After Samuel was weaned, Hannah fulfilled her vow to the Lord.

(Samuel lived at the temple and was raised by the priest and his family. Samuel is one of the great prophets in the Bible. Samuel is the man who anointed David as the King of Israel.)

10. Hannah had great joy because she did what God wanted her to do. (This is a good lesson for us.)

11. Hannah was happy because she went from being barren to having a son:

17. The priest blessed Hannah and asked the Lord to give her more children. The Lord answered the priest’s prayer.

1. The Book of Ruth is in the Old Testament and it only has 4 chapters. Ruth was King David’s great-grandmother and one of Jesus’ ancestors. Ruth is one of only 4 women listed in Jesus’ genealogy.

2. Ruth lived in Moab (present day, Jordan). Her husband, Mahlon, was from Bethlehem (present day, Israel). Mahlon’s family moved to Moab because there was a famine in Bethlehem. (The Moabites were enemies of the Israelites. The Bible cites many instances of warfare between the two countries.)
In the days when judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab.

4. Naomi heard that there was food in her homeland. So, she planned to return to Bethlehem. She told Ruth and Orpah to go back to their families and to find new husbands. Both Ruth and Orpah cried and told Ruth they wanted to go with her.

5. Jewish law states that if a man dies, his brother should marry his widow and continue the family line. Also, in ancient Israel a widow was still considered to belong to her husband’s family. So, Naomi was releasing her daughters-in-law from this commitment. Naomi told both women that since she was old and both of her sons had died, there was no one from her family to marry them. Also, the Moabites were enemies of the Israelites. So, Naomi probably assumed that her daughters wouldn’t want to live in Israel. Orpah decided to go back to her family, but Ruth clung to Naomi.

“Orpah” means “back of the neck”. She turned her back on Naomi.

6. Ruth told Naomi that she go with her and follow her God. So, Ruth and Naomi traveled to Bethlehem and arrived as the barley harvest was beginning.

１６「お願い、お義母さん、あたしを放り出さないで。お伴させていただきたいんです。お義母さんといっしょに暮らしたいんです。お嫁に来た以上、あたしもイスラエル人です。イスラエルの神様はあたしの神様です。１７どうかいつまでも、おそばにおいてください。あたしたちを引き離すものは死だけですわ。もしおそばを離れでもしたら、神様が、どんなにでも罰してくださいますように。」１８ナオミは、ルツの決心が堅く、これ以上説得してもむだだと知ると、もう何も言いませんでした。１９こうして二人はベツレヘムへ帰り着き、村中がそのことでわき立ちました。女たちは、「まあ、ほんとうにナオミさんかい」と大騒ぎです。２２二人がモアブからベツレヘムへ帰り着いたのは、ちょうど大麦の刈り入れが始まったころでした。 (Ruth 1:16-19, 22)

7. Naomi had an in-law named Boaz. Boaz lived in Bethlehem. The Bible says Boaz was “a man of good standing”.

ところでナオミには、ベツレヘムに住む、ボアズという名の大金持ちの親戚がありました。

“Boaz” means “powerful”.

8. Ruth told Naomi that she would glean the leftover grain. Gleaning was a common practice in ancient Israel. It was a form of charity for the disadvantaged in society. Widows, orphans and foreigners could walk behind the harvesters and pick up what was left. Ruth took action instead of sitting and waiting for help. Naomi knew that Ruth was beautiful and a hard worker. So, she encouraged Ruth to go because she hoped she would find a husband while she was working. As it turned out, Ruth worked in a field that Boaz owned.

刈り入れをし、畑にひと束おき忘れて来たら、わざわざ取りに戻らず、移住者やみなしご、未亡人のために残しておきなさい。そうすれば、神様は何もかもうまくいくようにしてくださいます。(Deuteronomy 24:19)
ある日、ルツはナオミに申し出ました。「ねえ、お義母さん、どなたか親切な方の畑で、刈る人たちのあとについて落ち穂を拾わせてもらおうと思うのよ……。」「すまないね、そうしてくれるかい。」３そこでルツは出かけて行き、落ち穂を集めたのですが、なんと、その畑はボアズの畑だったのです。 (Ruth2:2-3)

9. Boaz came to the field where Ruth was working. He noticed Ruth and asked the foreman about her. The foreman told Boaz that Ruth was a hard worker.

４５ルツがまだ畑にいるうちに、ボアズがベツレヘムの町から来ました。雇い人たちとひと通りあいさつをすませると、ボアズは監督役の者に尋ねました。「あそこにいるのは、どこの娘さんかね。」６「あれは、ナオミといっしょにモアブからまいった娘でございます。７落ち穂を拾わせてくれって、今朝から来ましてね。とにかく、ああやってずっと、木陰で休みもせず、立ち働いてるんでさあ。」 (Ruth 2:4-7)

10. Boaz told Ruth that she could stay with his servant girls and he told the men not to touch her. Ruth asked Boaz why she had found his favor.

８９ボアズはルツのそばに歩み寄り、ことばをかけました。「こんにちは。精が出るね。いいかい、いつもわしのところで落ち穂を拾いなさい。ほかの畑に行こうなんて考えなくていいんだよ。女子衆のあとに、しっかりついてお行き。若い者にも、あんたのじゃまはせんように、と注意しておいたからな。のどが渇いたら、あそこで好きなだけ水を飲むがいい。」１０１１ルツはありがたくて、何と言ったらよいかわかりません。「どうして、私みたいな者に、そんなに親切にしてくださるのですか。よそ者ですのに。」「もちろん、知っているよ。それにあんたがご主人を亡くしてからも、しゅうとめのために一生けんめい尽くしたことや、生まれ故郷を離れて、見知らぬ国まで来たことも、何もかもな。１２どうかイスラエルの神様が、その翼の下に避け所を求めてやって来たあんたを祝福してくださるように。」１３「ほんとうに、もったいのうございます。使用人でもございませんのに、こんなにも親切にしていただいて。」(Ruth2:8-13)

11. Boaz invited Ruth to eat with him. Boaz told his men to help Ruth find more grain. Ruth had more than she could eat and was able to take the extra grain back to Naomi.

昼食の時、ボアズはルツに、「さあ、いっしょにお食べ」と声をかけました。ルツが、刈り取る人たちと並んで腰をおろすと、ボアズは、食べきれないほどの食べ物を取り分けてくれました。１５そして、再び落ち穂拾いに立とうとすると、若者たちにこう命じてくれるのでした。「くれぐれも、あの女のじゃまはせんようにな。束の間でも落ち穂を拾わせてやりなさい。１６そしてもっと拾いやすいように、わざと大麦の穂を抜き落としておくがいい。つべこべ言ってはならんぞ。」１７こうしてルツは、一日中、そこで落ち穂を拾い集めました。夕方になって、集めた大麦の穂を打ってみると、なんと三十六リットルの升に一杯分もあります。１８それを抱えて町へ戻り、しゅうとめに見せました。また、昼食の残りも差し出しました。 (Ruth 2:14-18)

12. When Naomi saw Ruth, she asked her about her day. Naomi told Ruth that Boaz was one of their kinsman-redeemers. A kinsman-redeemer was responsible for protecting needy members of his extended family. So, Naomi was relieved that Ruth was working in Boaz’s field. She told Ruth to stay close to Boaz’s servant girls.

１９「おやまあ、ずい分たくさんだこと！」ナオミは思わず声をあげました。「いったい、どこで拾って来たの。こんなに親切にしてくださった方のために、心から神様に感謝しましょう。」ルツはしゅうとめに、ボアズの畑に行ったことなど一部始終を話して聞かせました。２０それを聞いて、ナオミはまたびっくり。「あの方ですって！神様、ありがとうございます。神様のお恵みは、あんたが夫を亡くした時に終わったんじゃなかったわ。ずっとお恵みは注がれていたんだねえ。だって、その方はいちばん近い親戚の一人なんだもの。」２１「まあ、そうですの。あの方は、刈り入れがぜんぶ終わるまで、毎日、落ち穂を拾い集めていいっておっしゃったわ。」２２「そりゃよかったこと。それじゃおことばに甘えて、刈り入れの間中ずっと、あの方のところで若い女たちといっしょにお世話になりなさい。ほかの畑に行くよりずっと安心よ。」２３こうしてルツは、大麦と小麦の刈り入れが終わるまで落ち穂を拾い続けました。 (Ruth 2:19-23)

13. Naomi gave Ruth instructions about Boaz. Boaz would be sleeping by the grain to make sure thieves didn’t steal it. Ruth did everything that Naomi told her to do. When Boaz woke up, Ruth asked him to spread his garment over her. This was symbolic for a marriage proposal.

３さあ、言うとおりにしておくれ。体を洗って香水をつけ、きれいな服を着て、打ち場へお行き。ただし、あの方が夕食をすますまでは気づかれないようにね。４あの方がお休みになる場所をちゃんと見届けてから、そおっと入って行き、足もとのおおいをまくって横になりなさい。あとは、あの方が教えてくださるよ。結婚についてどうすべきかはね。」５「わかりました。おっしゃるとおりにしますわ。」６７ルツはしゅうとめに教えられたとおり、その夜、打ち場に出かけて行きました。ボアズは食事をすますと、すっかり上機嫌で、積み重ねてある麦のそばにごろっと横になり眠ってしまいました。この時とばかり、ルツはそっと忍び寄り、ボアズの足もとのおおいをまくって横になりました。８真夜中に目を覚ましたボアズは、びっくりして跳び起きました。なんと、足もとに女が寝ているではありませんか。９「そこにいるのは、だれだっ！」「ルツでございます。どうぞ、神様のおきてに従って私を妻にしてください。あなた様はその権利がおありですわ。」 (Ruth 3:3-9)

14. Boaz told Ruth that he would like to marry her, but he had to make sure that another kinsman-redeemer didn’t want to marry her first. Boaz gave Ruth grain and sent her back to Naomi.

１０「あんたのようにすばらしい女を下さった神様に感謝しよう。こんなにまでしてナオミに仕えてくれているとはなあ。まだまだ若いのだから、金のあるなしは別にして、若い男に心をひかれても、不思議じゃない。なのに、そんな気持ちは二の次にして、〔わしと結婚してナオミのために世継ぎを残そうというんだね〕。１１ルツさん、何も心配はいらないよ。望みどおりにしてあげよう。あんたがすばらしい女だってことは、だれもが知ってるんだからね。１２ただ、一つだけ問題がある。確かにわしは近い親戚には違いないが、もっと近い親戚もいるからな。１３とにかく今夜はここで休みなさい。朝になったら、その人と話をつけることにしよう。もしその人があんたを妻に迎えるというなら、それもよかろう。義務を果たさせるまでだ。だが、もし断わったら、わしが結婚しよう。今ここで、はっきり神様に誓うよ。だから安心して、朝までここでお休み。」１４こうして、ルツは言われたとおりボアズの足もとに寝ましたが、夜明け前に起き上がりました。ボアズが、「この打ち場に来たことをだれにも知られないように」と注意したからです。１５‐１８「肩かけを持っておいで。」ボアズはそう言うと、大麦を二十一リットルほどその中へ入れ、しゅうとめへのみやげにと背負わせてくれました。こうしてルツは町へ帰りました。帰宅すると、ナオミが「どうだったね」と尋ねます。聞かれるままに一部始終を話し、ボアズからことづかった大麦を手渡しました。そして、「何も持たずに帰ってはいけないよ」と言ったボアズのことばも、忘れずに伝えました。ナオミはうなずきました。「そう、じゃあどうなるか、何か知らせがあるまでおとなしくしていましょう。ボアズさんのことですもの、決着がつくよう、最善を尽くしてくださるわ。きっと、きょう中にもめどをつけてくださいますよ。」

15. Boaz went to the town gate to face the other kinsman-redeemer. This man was interested in acquiring Elimelech’s estate, but he wasn’t interested in marrying Ruth because any son she had would had Mahlon’s name and inherit Mahlon’s share of the estate. The kinsman-redeemer took of his sandal and told Boaz that he could buy Elimelech’s estate.

１さて、ボアズはさっそく広場に出かけ、目ざす相手を見つけました。「すみません。ちょっと折り入ってお話ししたいことがあるんですが、いいですか。」二人は並んで腰をおろしました。２それからボアズは、町の指導者十人を招き、証人になってくれるように頼みました。３万事てはずが整うと、ボアズは話を切り出しました。「モアブから帰って来たナオミのことは、ご存じですな。実は、あの人がわしらの身内のエリメレクの畑を売りたいと言っている。４そのことをお耳に入れるべきだと思ったんでね。ここに証人の方々もおられることだし……、よかったら、買ってください。いかがです？はっきりしたお返事がいただきたいですな。もしおいやなら、わしが買いましょう。一番にそれを買い取る権利は、あなたにあるんですからな。わしはその次というわけです。」「いいだろう。買うことにしよう。」５「ところで、ナオミから畑を買い取るとすると、ルツをも妻に迎えてもらわなければなりません。ルツは子供をもうけ、その地を相続させて、亡き夫の名を残さなければなりませんからな。」６「そんなことなら、おりるよ。生まれてくる子にまで財産を分けてやるなんて、そりゃ困る。あんたが買ってくれ。」７当時イスラエルでは、人が買い戻しの権利を譲る時は、くつを脱いで相手に渡す習慣がありました。こうして、すべての取り引きが公認されるわけです。８その人はボアズに「あんたに譲るよ」と言って、くつを脱ぎました。 (Ruth 4:1-8)

16. Boaz announced that he had bought Elimelech’s estate, including Ruth.

９ボアズは、同席の証人や取り巻きの人々に向かって言いました。「では皆さん。きょう、私がナオミから、エリメレクおよびキルヨンやマフロンの全財産を買い取ったことを、お認めいただけますな。１０また、マフロンの未亡人でモアブ人のルツをも、妻として譲り受けることになります。ルツの産む子供は亡くなった夫の家名を継ぐことができるのです。このことの証人になっていただけますな。」 (Ruth 4:9-10)

17. So, Ruth and Boaz got married and Ruth had a son, Obed, and Naomi took care of him. Obed is the grandfather of King David.

１３こうしてボアズはルツと結婚し、まもなく彼女は男の子を授かりました。１４女たちはナオミに言いました。「よかったわね。神様がこんなにかわいいお孫さんを授けてくださるなんて。きっと有名におなりだわ。将来が楽しみね。１５おかげで、あんたは若返り、老後の心配もありゃしない。なにしろ、あんなに母親思いのお嫁さんから生まれた子供なんだもの。全くあの女には、息子が七人そろってもかなわないわよ。」１６１７ナオミはその赤ん坊を手塩にかけて育てました。近所の女たちは、「ご覧なさいよ。あのナオミさんに、また男の子が授かったんですってよ」と口々に言いました。皆はその子にオベデという名をつけました。オベデはエッサイの父で、ダビデ王の祖父となった人です。(Ruth 4:13-17)

18. So, at the beginning of the story, Ruth is a childless widow, but she became the great-grandmother of King David and an ancestor of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Ruth and Naomi were two widows who stuck together and because of their loyalty to each other they were able to create a new family for themselves.

1. Last month we learned about Joseph and his family. The Bible says Joseph’s family, the Israelites or Hebrews, became very numerous and prosperous in Egypt. After Joseph’s generation died, Egypt got a new king. This king wasn’t kind to the Israelites.

６やがて、ヨセフも兄弟たちも死に、新しい世代になりました。７彼らは子宝に恵まれ、人口は増える一方です。あまりの急激な増加に、ゴシェンの地はイスラエル人であふれ、一つの国と言ってもいいほどの勢力にふくれ上がりました。８やがて、新しい王がエジプトの王座につきました。ヨセフの子孫に何の義理も感じない王です。９王は国民に言いました。「このままイスラエル人どもを放っておくと危険だ。あまりに数が多すぎる。１０なんとか、やつらの力を食い止めなければならん。戦争にでもなり、やつらが敵方についたら、それこそ大へんだ。われわれに戦いをいどみ、なんなくこの国から逃げてしまうだろう。」１１そこで、イスラエル人を奴隷にしてしまおうということになりました。きびしい監督を立て、重労働につかせるのです。こうして建てられたのが、倉庫の町ピトムとラメセスです。１２ところが、いくらこき使い、締めつけをきびしくしても、いっこうに効果はありません。むしろ、前より激しい勢いで人が増え続けるのです。エジプト人は警戒して、１３１４ますますつらい仕事を押しつけました。畑で長時間の重労働をさせたうえに、粘土でれんがを作る激しい仕事もさせる、というぐあいです。 Exodus 1:6-14

Note: The king of Egypt made the Israelites lives bitter. When Jewish people celebrate Passover, they eat a Passover meal with “bitter herbs” to remember the struggles of their ancestors.

2. The king of Egypt told the Hebrew midwives to kill all the baby Hebrew boys, but the midwives feared God and they let the baby boys live. The Hebrew population continued to grow. So, Pharaoh gave a new order.

１５１６これほどにしても、まだ効き目がありません。とうとう王は、シフラとプアというヘブル人（イスラエル人）の助産婦に、ひそかに命じました。ヘブル人の男の子は生まれたらすぐ殺し、女の子だけを生かしておくようにというのです。１７ところが、助産婦たちは神様を恐れていたので、王の命令に従わず、男の子も生かしておきました。１８王は二人を呼びつけ、問い詰めました。「おまえたちは男の子を生かしておくそうだな。なぜわしの命令に背いたっ！」１９「陛下はご存じないでしょうが、ヘブルの女はとても丈夫で、簡単に赤ん坊を産んでしまうのです。私たちが駆けつけた時には、もう生まれてしまっているのでございます。エジプトの女と違って出産に手間取らないものですから。」２０神様は助産婦たちによくされたので、イスラエル人はさらに増え続け、強大な国民になりました。２１神様を恐れ敬う助産婦たちも、子供に恵まれました。２２そこで、王は全国民に、「以後、ヘブル人の赤ん坊は、女の子だけを残して、男の子はみなナイル川に投げ込め」と命じたのです。 Exodus 1:15-22

3. When Moses was born, his mother tried to hide him. Moses’ sister, Miriam, helped her mother.

１２そのころ、あるヘブル人の若い男女が結婚しました。二人ともレビ部族の出身でした。やがて、二人の間に男の子が生まれました。玉のようにかわいらしい赤ん坊です。どうして、川へなど投げ込めましょう。母親は三か月のあいだ家に隠しておきました。３もうそれ以上は隠しきれません。彼女はパピルス製のかごにタールを塗って防水し、赤ん坊を入れると、ナイル川のほとりの葦のしげみに、そっと置きました。４その子の姉が遠くから、弟がどうなるのか見守っていました。Exodus 2:1-4

4. Pharoah’s daughter happened to be bathing in the Nile. She heard Moses crying and felt sorry for him.

５さて、それから何が起こったでしょう。王女が、ちょうどそのとき川へ水浴びに来たのです。侍女たちを従えて岸を歩いていると、葦の間に小さなかごがあります。何だろうと思って侍女をやり、それを引いて来させました。６開けてみて驚きました。中で赤ん坊が泣いているではありませんか。「まあ、かわいそうに！きっとヘブル人の赤ちゃんだわ。」王女は思わず叫びました。７それを見ていた姉が、この時とばかり王女のそばへ駆け寄りました。「王女様、その赤ちゃん、お育てになりますか？だったら、お乳をあげる女がいりますよね。だれかヘブル人の女の人を捜して来ましょうか？」８「よく気のつく子だね。そうしておくれ。」王女の返事を聞いて、少女はうれしくてたまりません。家へ飛んで帰り、母親を呼んで来ました。９「お礼は十分しますから、この子を連れて行って、私の子として育ててください。」王女は子供の実の母親とも知らず頼みました。もう何の遠慮もいりません。彼女は子供を抱いて家へ帰りました。１０やがて、その子は大きくなり、養子として正式に、王女のやしきへ引き取られました。王女は彼をモーセ〔「引き出す」の意〕と名づけました。水の中から引き出した子供だからです。Exodus 2:5-11

Moses’ mother was able to take care of Moses until he was weaned. Then, Moses, a Hebrew, became Pharaoh’s grandson.

Miriam means “prophetess or lady”.
Moses means “pulled out of ”.

It’s interesting to note that the Pharaoh’s plans to destroy the Israelites were thwarted by women: first by the Hebrew midwives, then by Moses’ mother and sister, and finally by his own daughter. All of these women helped save Moses’ life.

It’s also interesting to note that Moses was delivered from death as a baby. As an adult, Moses led the Israelites through their deliverance from Egypt.

5. The Bible says Moses had an older brother, Aaron. Moses stuttered. So, Aaron spoke for Moses. Aaron helped Moses lead the Israelites out of bondage.

Aaron means “honored or exalted one”.

２８２９二人はまた、「わたしが主である。行って、わたしの言うことを王に伝えよ」という命令も受けました。３０その時、「私にはできません。口べたなのです。どうして王が、私などの言うことを聞くでしょう」と答えたのが、このモーセです。１それから、神様はモーセに言いました。「おまえをわたしの使者として、エジプト王のもとへ遣わす。兄アロンがおまえの代わりに話す。２おまえはわたしから聞いたとおりをアロンに話し、それを王に伝えてもらえばよい。イスラエル人をエジプトから行かせるように要求するのだ。３王は簡単には承知しないので、わたしはエジプトで数々の奇蹟を行なう。４それでも、王はなかなか言うことを聞かないだろう。そこで最後に、大きな災いを送って徹底的に打ちのめし、そのあとで、わたしの国民を救い出す。５その力を目のあたりにする時、エジプト人は、わたしがほんとうに神であることを思い知るだろう。」６モーセとアロンは、神様の命令どおりにしました。７王と対決した時、モーセは八十歳、アロンは八十三歳でした。

6. After God parted the Red Sea and Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, Miriam sang a song of victory.

１９エジプト王の馬と騎手と戦車は、海の中を進もうとしました。しかしその時、水の壁はくずれ、彼らの頭上におおいかぶさったのです。そしてイスラエル人は、かわいた地を渡りました。２０この時、アロンの姉で女預言者のミリヤムが、タンバリンを手に、女たちの先頭に立って踊り始めました。２１ミリヤムは歌いました。「主の勝利をたたえ、心から喜び歌おう。主は馬も人も海に投げ込んだ。」 Exodus 15:19-21

It’s interesting to note that Pharaoh commanded for the Hebrew baby boys to be drowned, but in the end, it was Pharaoh and his people that were drowned in the Red Sea. (You reap what you sow!)

7. Moses’ mother, Jochebed, had 3 outstanding children. The Bible says Miriam, Aaron, and Moses led their people by example instead of by using force or violence. Jochebed’s children also followed God’s way instead of living for themselves. They were “servant leaders” in the same way that Jesus was when He walked the earth.
２５そこでイエスは、彼らを呼び集め、言われました。「この世の普通の人たちの間では、王は暴君であり、役人は部下にいばり散らすものです。２６だが、あなたがたの間では、違います。リーダーになりたい者は、仕える者になりなさい。２７上に立ちたいと思う者は、奴隷のように仕えなければなりません。２８メシヤ（救い主）のわたしでさえ、人々に仕えられるためではなく、みんなに仕えるためにこの世に来たのです。そればかりか、多くの人の罪の代償として自分のいのちを与えるために来たのです。だからあなたがたも、わたしを見ならいなさい。」 Matthew 20:25-28

8. After God parted the Red Sea, the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years. This was a hard life. Water was scarce and food was hard to find. At one point, Miriam and Aaron wondered why they had to follow Moses since he was younger than them.

１ある日、ミリヤムとアロンは、妻がクシュ人だということで、モーセを非難しました。２「神様の命令を伝えるのはモーセだけじゃない。私たちだって、ちゃんと神様と話ができるんだ。」３４このことを聞かれた神様は、さっそく、モーセとアロンとミリヤムを天幕に呼びつけました。「三人ともここに来なさい」と言われるままに、神様の前に出ました。モーセはだれよりも謙そんな人でした。５それから、神様は雲に身を隠して降りて来られ、神の天幕の入口に立って命じました。「アロンとミリヤム、前に出なさい。」二人は言われたとおりにしました。６「わたしは預言者には幻や夢の中で話をするが、７８モーセは特別だ。彼はいつでもわたしと会って、直接話ができる。わたしの姿も見ることができる。それなのになぜ、恐れもなく彼を非難するのかっ！」９激しく二人をしかりつけ、神様は立ち去りました。１０そして、雲が天幕を離れると、どうでしょう。そのとたんミリヤムはらい病にかかり、みるみる肌が白くなったではありませんか。１１それを見たアロンは、必死で叫びました。「ああ、モーセ、赦してくれっ！あんなばかなことを言って悪かった。１２ミリヤムを、肉が腐りかかった死産の子のようにしないでくれ。」１３モーセは祈りました。「神様っ！どうか、どうか姉を治してやってください。」１４しかし、神様は答えました。「父親が娘の顔につばきをしてさえ、娘は七日間汚れるではないか。ミリヤムを野営地の外に出しなさい。七日たったら、連れ戻してもよい。」１５ミリヤムは野営地から出されました。こうして一週間、人々は彼女が戻るまで旅に出ませんでした。１６そのあとハツェロテを去り、パランの荒野に野営することになりました。Numbers 12:1-16

The question Miriam asked is similar to questions people still ask today: “How can I know what God wants?”
“How does God speak to people?”
“Who has authority over me?”

Also, in Bible times, leprosy was seen as a punishment from God. The Israelites interpreted Miriam’s leprosy as a sign that Moses was God’s chosen leader.

9. Miriam died while the Israelites were still wandering in the desert. Water played a big part in Miriam's life. She saved her brother from the water; she sang a song of victory after the parting of the Red Sea; she died in a waterless place. Immediately after her death, God gave abundant water to the people.

So, how can we train our children? The Bible has many verses and stories that we can use to help us raise our children. In this lesson, we will look at these verses.

1. Love and take care of your children. Treat your children the way you be treated. This is common sense, but many people fail to give their children love and basic necessities. It’s also important to love your children unconditionally. Children need to know that you will love them even when they make mistakes or disappoint you.

2. Love and take care of yourself and your marriage. This is common sense, too. If you have a negative self-image, you will probably pass that on to your children. 4. The child should always be told why they are being punished and how they can avoid being punished in the future.

A. God’s perfect plan for romance is “one man, one woman, one lifetime”. This means God’s perfect plan is for us to get married and stay married until we die. Adam and Eve were the first romantic couple.

B. Years later, Solomon wrote a book in the Bible, Song of Songs. This book is about romantic love. In this book, Solomon and his wife express their feelings about each other. Their language is very different from our language, but we can have the same feelings about our spouses today.

C. In Song of Solomon, Solomon says his wife is beautiful, perfect and unique, graceful, and pleasing.

E. God wants us to have this kind of romance with our spouses. How can we do this? Here are some ways to “grow” romance in your marriage:

1. Focus on your spouse’s good qualities and complement them.

Joseph Part II

1. In the last lesson, we learned about Joseph’s brothers selling him into slavery, Potiphar’s wife having Joseph put into prison, and the cupbearer forgetting about Joseph. Today, we’ll learn how Joseph was released from prison and how he reconciled with his brothers.

2. Two years later, Pharaoh had dreams that he wanted interpreted. The cupbearer told Pharaoh about Joseph.

1それから二年後のある夜、今度は王が夢を見ました。ナイル川のほとりに立っていると、２とつぜん川から丸々と太った雌牛が七頭出て来て、あたりの草を食べ始めるのです。３次に、また別の雌牛が七頭出て来ます。骨と皮ばかりで、あばら骨が浮いて見えるような牛ばかりです。それが、歩いて行って太った牛の隣に立ったかと思うと、４その太った牛を食べてしまったのです。そこで目が覚めました。５やがて、またうとうと寝入ると、別の夢を見ました。今度は、一本の茎に穀物の穂が七つ出て来るのです。一つ一つはみな形も良く、実がいっぱいに詰まっています。６ところが突然、同じ茎にまた別の穂が七つ現われました。どれもこれも熱い東風にやられてちりちりに焼け、実がはいっていません。７なんと、このしなびた穂が、実のたっぷりはいった形の良い七つの穂を、のみ込んでしまったのです。そこでまた目が覚めました。ぜんぶ夢だったのです。８夜が明けると、王はあれこれ考えましたが、考えれば考えるほど、夢のことが気になってしかたありません。国中の魔術師や学者を呼び集め、夢の意味を説明させようとしました。しかし、だれにも何のことかわかりません。９その時、王の毒味役が口をはさみました。「実は、うっかりしておりましたが、とうに申し上げておかなければならないことがあったのです。１０いつでしたか、王様がお怒りになって、私とコック長とが、親衛隊長の屋敷内の牢に入れられたことがございました。１１ある夜、私どもは夢を見たのです。１２その夢を、隊長の奴隷だったあるヘブル人の青年に話しましたところ、夢の意味をちゃんと説明してくれました。１３そして何もかも、そのとおりになりました。私はお赦しを得てお毒味役に復帰できましたし、コック長は死刑にされ、柱につるされてしまいました。」Genesis41:1-13

3. Pharaoh sent for Joseph. Joseph told Pharaoh that it wasn’t himself, but God who would give Pharaoh the answers he was looking for.

4. Pharaoh told Joseph his dream and Joseph interpreted it. Joseph told Pharaoh that there would be 7 years of abundance followed by 7 years of famine.

２５「夢は二つとも同じ意味でございます。神様が、これからエジプトでなさろうとしていることを、お告げになったのです。２６七頭の太った雌牛と、実のよくはいった七つの穂はどちらも、これから七年のあいだ豊作が続くということです。２７七頭のやせた雌牛と七つのしおれた実のない穂は、その七年間の豊作のあと、七年間ききんが続くことを表わしています。２８神様は、今からしようとしておられることを、そのように王様に示されたのです。２９これから七年間は、エジプトの国中が豊かな繁栄を楽しむ時となりましょう。３０しかしそのあと、七年間のききんに見舞われます。以前の繁栄がすっかり忘れられ、あとかたもなくなるほどの大ききんです。国土はすっかり荒れ果て、３１あまりのひどさに、豊作の年があったことなど、信じられなくなるでしょう。３２同じ夢を二度ご覧になったのは、今お話ししたことが間違いなく起こる証拠です。神様がそうお決めになったからには、すぐ夢のとおりになります。Genesis 41:25-32

5. Then, Joseph helped Pharaoh come up with a plan.

３３あまり猶予はありません。さっそくエジプト一の人材を捜して、国全体の農業計画を管理させたらよろしいかと存じます。３４３５エジプトを五つの管轄区に分けます。七年間は各地区の役人に命じて、余った穀物を王様の倉庫へ納めさせたらいかがでしょう。３６そうすれば、大ききんになっても困りません。でないと、国中が災害にやられて、とんでもないことになるでしょう。」Genesis 41:33-36

6. Pharaoh and his officials liked Joseph’s plan. Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of the land of Egypt.

３７ヨセフの提言に、王もお付の者たちもうなずきました。３８では、この仕事の責任者をだれにしたらよいでしょう。一同が相談を始めると、王が言いました。「ヨセフがよい。彼は神様の特別の力をいただいておる。まさにうってつけではないか。」３9Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, 「夢の意味を神様がおまえにお示しになったからには、おまえがわが国でいちばんの知恵者に違いない。４０したがってわしは今、おまえをこの仕事全体の責任者に任命する。何でもおまえの命令どおりすることにしよう。この国でおまえの上に立つ者は、わしだけだ。」４１４２王は自分の印の入った指輪を、権威のしるしとしてヨセフの指にはめ、美しい服を着せて、首には王様用の金のペンダントをかけてやりました。「おまえをエジプトの総理大臣に任命する。王の私がそう宣言する。」４３王はまた、国で第二の地位にあることを示す車を、ヨセフに与えました。ヨセフがどこかへ出かける時は、必ずだれかが、「総理大臣閣下のお通りーっ！」と叫ぶのです。４４王はヨセフに言いました。「エジプトの王であるわしが誓う。わが国を治める全責任をおまえにゆだねる。」Genesis 41:37-44

7. Joseph was given a wife and he helped the land of Egypt prepare for the famine. The Bible says that there was so much grain that Joseph couldn’t keep records for all of it.

8. The famine spread throughout the world, but Egypt was prepared. ５３こうしてついに、七

年の豊作は終わりました。５４そのあと、予告どおり、七年間のききんが始まりました。近隣の国々でもひどい不作でした。しかし心配はいりません。エジプト中の倉庫にはたっぷり穀物がたくわえてあります。５５飢える人が出始めました。王のもとには、食物を求める人たちが、ひっきりなしにやって来ます。すると、王は決まって、「総理大臣の指示どおりにするのだ」と命じ、ヨセフのところへ行かせるのです。５６５７ききんはますますひどくなり、全世界をおおい尽くす勢いです。ヨセフは倉庫を開け、穀物をエジプト人に売ることにしました。また、ほかの国々から、ぞくぞくと買い出しに来る人々にも売りました。

9. Because of the famine, Jacob told his sons to go buy grain in Egypt.

１ところで、ヤコブの一家はそのころどうしていたでしょう。やはり食べるに事欠く毎日でした。話によると、エジプトへ行けば穀物が手に入るということです。ヤコブは息子たちに言いました。「みんな、つっ立ったまま顔を見合わせてたって、しかたがないぞ。２エジプトへ行けば穀物があるという噂だ。さあ、ぐずぐずしている暇はない。すぐ買い出しに行ってくれ。このままじゃみな飢え死にだ。」３ヨセフの十人の兄は、こうして、エジプトへ穀物を買いに行くことになりました。４しかしヤコブは、ヨセフの弟ベニヤミンだけは、どうしても行かせませんでした。〔ヨセフの時のように〕ベニヤミンの身にも何か悪いことが起こるといけない、と思ったのです。５買い出しに行ったのは、イスラエルの息子たちばかりではありません。ほかの国からも、大ぜいの人がエジプトへ行きました。カナンのききんは、どこにも劣らないくらいひどかったのです。Genesis 42:1-5

10. When Joseph’s brothers arrived in Egypt, they bowed down to Joseph (just like Joseph’s dream!). Joseph recognized them, but they didn’t recognize Joseph. Joseph pretended to be a stranger. He spoke harshly to them and had them put in prison for 3 days.

６兄たちは、エジプトの総理大臣で、穀物を売る責任者のところへ出かけました。まさかその人が弟のヨセフだとは思いもよりません。顔を地につけんばかりに深々と頭を下げました。７ヨセフはひと目で兄たちだとわかりましたが、わざとそ知らぬふりをし、きびしく問いただしました。「おまえたちはどこから来たのか。」「おまえたちはどこから来たのか。」「カナンの国からまいりました。穀物を少し分けていただきたいと思いまして……。」８９兄たちはまだ気づきません。ヨセフはふっと少年時代の夢を思い出し、荒々しく問い詰めました。「おまえたちはスパイに違いない。わが国がききんでどんなに苦しんでいるか、調べに来たのだろう。」１０「とんでもございません。ほんとうに食糧を買いにまいっただけでございます。１１私どもはみな兄弟で、まっとうな人間です。スパイだなんてめっそうもありません。」１２「いーや、スパイだ。そうに決まっている。われわれがどのくらい弱ったか見に来たのだ。」１３「恐れながら申し上げます。私どもは十二人兄弟で、父親はカナンの地におります。末の弟は父のところに残りました。もう一人は死んでしまいましたが……。」１４「それがどうしたっ！何の関係もないではないか。やはりスパイに違いない。１５もしおまえたちの言うとおりなら、その末の弟を連れて来い。それまではエジプトから一歩たりとも出ることは許さん。１６だれか一人が出かけて、弟を連れて来い。あとの者は全員、牢の中で待つがいい。そうすれば、おまえたちの申し立てがほんとうかどうかわかる。もし弟がいなければ、おまえたちは間違いなくスパイだ。」１７ヨセフは一同を三日のあいだ牢に入れておきました。Genesis 42:6-17

11. After 3 days, Joseph told them that one of them should stay in prison while the others went back to get their youngest brother. The brothers began to talk among themselves and said they were having this trouble because of the trouble they had caused Joseph. (They didn’t know that Joseph could understand what they were saying because Joseph had used an interpreter to speak to them.)

１８三日目にヨセフは言いました。「私は神様を恐れる人間だ。もしおまえたちが潔白なら、それを証明する機会を与えてやろう。１９一応おまえたちの申し立てを信じる。一人だけここに残れば、あとの者は穀物を持って帰ってよい。２０ただし、末の弟を連れて来るのだ。おまえたちが正直かどうか、確かめなければならないからな。うそでないとわかれば、いのちは助けよう。」一同は言われたとおりにすることにしました。２１彼らは互いに言いました。「昔、ヨセフにひどいことをしたからなあ。こんなことになったのも、罰があたったんだ。あいつはこわがって必死で助けを求めたっけなあ。なのにおれたちは、まるで知らん顔をして、耳を貸そうともしなかった。」Genesis 42:18-22

12. Joseph’s brothers returned to Canaan. Jacob didn’t want them to take Benjamin to Egypt. When they ran out of grain, Jacob had no choice but to send his sons back to Egypt. When they arrived in Egypt, Joseph invited them to his house and he returned Simeon to them.
13. Joseph asked them about their father. When Joseph saw Benjamin, he became emotional.

２４一同は屋敷に招き入れられ、足を洗う水を与えられました。ろばも餌をもらいました。２５お昼にはヨセフが来るということです。一同はすぐ贈り物を渡せるよう、抜かりなく用意しました。なんでも、昼食をいっしょにするらしいのです。２６ヨセフが戻りました。一同はていねいにおじぎをし、贈り物を差し出しました。２７ヨセフは皆にその後のことを尋ねました。「で、おまえたちの父親はどうしているかね。この前もちょっと聞いたが、まだ達者かな？」２８「はい、おかげさまで元気でおります。」そう言って、もう一度おじぎをしました。２９ヨセフは弟ベニヤミンの顔をじっと見つめました。「これが末の弟か。そうか、この子がなあ。どうだ、疲れてはいないか？神様がおまえに目をかけてくださるように。」３０ここまで言うのがやっとでした。あまりのなつかしさに胸がいっぱいになり、涙がこみ上げてきたのです。あわてて部屋を出て寝室に駆け込み、思いきり泣きました。 Genesis 43:24-30

14. Finally, Joseph couldn’t control himself any longer. He revealed his identity to his brothers. Joseph told them that it was God’s plan for him to be in Egypt. God had sent Joseph to Egypt to save their lives.

１ヨセフはもうこれ以上がまんできませんでした。「みんな下がっていろ！」大声でお付の者に命じました。あとには、兄弟たちとヨセフだけが残りました。２そのとたん、こらえきれなくなって、あたりはばからず男泣きに泣きだしました。泣き声は屋敷中に聞こえ、その知らせがすぐ王の宮殿にまで伝えられるほどでした。３「兄さん、ヨセフですよ。ほら、よく見てください。お父さんは元気ですか。」びっくりしたのは兄弟たちです。あっけにとられて、口をきくこともできません。４「さあさあ、そんな所にいないで、ここへ来てください。」そう言われて、一同はそばへ寄りました。「お忘れですか。ヨセフですよ。あの、エジプトへ売られた弟ですよ。５だけど、そのことで自分を責めないでください。何もかも神様のお取りはからいだったのです。私がここへ来るようにしたのも、ほんとうは兄さんたちでなく神様なのです。こんなふうに兄さんたちを助けることができるようにしてくださった。６もうこれで丸二年もききんが続きましたが、まだまだ収まりませんよ。あと五年はこのままです。その間は、種まきもできないし、収穫もありません。７それでも私たち一族が滅びず、やがて大きな国になることができるように、神様が私をここに遣わされたのです。８そうです。決して兄さんたちのせいではありません。神様のお導きです。神様は私を王の顧問にし、この国の総理大臣にしてくださいました。Genesis 45:1-8

15. When Pharaoh heard that Joseph’s brothers were in Egypt, he gave them the best land in Egypt. He told them to go back to Canaan to get the rest of their family.

１６やがて王にも、「ヨセフ様のご兄弟がエジプトに来られたそうでございます」と知らされました。王も役人たちも大喜びです。１７王はヨセフに言いました。「兄さんたちに伝えてくれ。荷物を家畜につけて早くカナンの家へ帰り、１８改めてお父上と家族ともどもエジプトへ来るようにとな。ぜひエジプトに住んでもらわねばならん。『王がエジプト中で最良の土地を用意いたします。その土地の豊かな収穫で生活してください』と伝えるのだ。１９兄さんたちには、エジプトから荷馬車を持って行ってもらおう。女、子供やご老体のお父上をお連れするのに役立つだろう。２０財産の心配はいらない。エジプトの最良の土地が手に入るのだから、置いて来ても惜しくはないだろう。」Genesis 45:16-20

16. When the brothers reached Canaan, Jacob couldn’t believe what they told him. He was overjoyed.

２５こうして一行は出発し、カナンの、父ヤコブのもとへ帰りました。２６「ヨセフが、ヨセフが生きてますよ、お父さん！それも驚いたじゃありませんか、エジプトの総理大臣なんですからね！」真っ先に父のところへ飛んで行き、勢い込んで知らせたのに、ヤコブはうれしそうな顔ひとつしません。今さらそんなことが、どうして信じられましょう。２７ところが、話を聞くと、どうもほんとうらしいのです。ヨセフのことづけも聞きました。それに、エジプトへ迎えるために送ってよこした荷馬車も、ちゃんとあります。夢ではないのです。そう思うと急に元気が出ました。２８「ほんとうだ。まちがいない。ヨセフは生きている。わしは行くぞ。死前にどうしてもひと目会いたい。」 Genesis 45:25-28

What Does The Bible Say About Husbands and Wives?

1. The first marriage was between Adam and Eve. Adam was looking for a “suitable helper”, so God created Eve.

１９２０そこで、土からあらゆる種類の動物と鳥を造り、アダムのところへ連れて来て、名前をつけさせました。それぞれみな、アダムがつけたとおりの名前をもらいましたが、アダムの助けになるようなものは見あたりません。２１そこでアダムをぐっすり眠らせ、その体から肋骨を一本取り出すことにしました。取ったあとをきちんとふさぐと、２２その骨で女を造り、彼のところへ連れて来ました。２３「ああ、これならぴったりです！」アダムは思わず叫びました。「まさに私の半身です。そうだ、『男』から造ったのだから、『女』と呼ぶことにしますよ（一種の語呂合わせ。ヘブル語では男をイーシュ、女をイシャーと言う）。」２４人が両親のもとを離れて妻と結ばれ、二人が一体となるのは、こうした背景があるからです。２５ところで、この時にはまだ、二人とも裸でした。それでも別に気まずい思いもせず、恥ずかしくもありませんでした。(Genesis 2:19-25)

2. The Bible says Eve was created from Adam’s ribs. Some Bible experts believe this is important. If Eve had been created from Adam’s head, she would be over Adam. If Eve had been created from Adam’s feet, she would be under Adam. Eve was created from Adam’s ribs, so she is at his side and close to his heart.

3. The Bible says Eve was from Adam’s bones and flesh. (Genesis 2:23) Adam was excited to have Eve. She was just what he needed! Adam valued and honored Eve. Adam was completed by Eve. Our marriages should follow this example.

4. Also, the Bible says marriage is like a picture of our relationship to God. God wants us to be faithful to Him, like husbands and wives should be faithful to each other. Hosea is an Old Testament book about a woman who was unfaithful to her husband. Her husband forgave her many times, just like God forgives us many times.

5. Marriage is very important to God. In Old Testament times, men were supposed to spend the first year of their marriage making their wives happy.

The Bible has a lot verses about husbands and wives. We will look at some of them.

Husbands:

6.なぜなら、キリスト様の体である教会がキリスト様にゆだねられているのと同じように、妻は夫にゆだねられているからです。〔キリスト様は教会のために心を配り、その救い主となるために、実にいのちさえも投げ出されたのです。〕Ephesians 5:23

This means that men should be the leaders of their family. This doesn’t mean that men are superior to women. God wants us to have order in our relationships.

３３神様は、無秩序や混乱を喜ばれません。調和を愛する神様ですから、どの教会にも、この調和があるのです。1 Corinthians 14:33

7.また、夫は、教会のためにいのちを捨てるほどの愛を示されたキリスト様にならって、妻を愛しなさい。Ephesians 5:25

This means a man should love his wife enough to die for her.

8.これこそ、夫が妻に対してとるべき態度です。つまり、夫は妻を、自分の体の一部のように愛さなければなりません。二人は一体なのですから、夫が妻を愛する時、実は自分自身を愛しているのです。Ephesians 5:28

This means a man should put his wife’s needs ahead of his own needs.
9.夫は妻を愛し、いたわりなさい。つらく当たったり、邪険な態度をとったりしてはいけません。Colossians 3:19

This means men should treat their wives well. (They shouldn’t be mean to them.)

10. “Husbands, be considerate (kind) as you live with your wives and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” 1 Peter 3:7

In this verse, “weaker partner” could also be translated as delicate partner—like expensive china that needs special care.

“heirs with you of the gracious gift of life”—this verse is for Christian men and women. It means they will both go to heaven when they die.

“so that nothing will hinder your prayers”—God is always interested in our heart and our attitude. If a man is not good to his wife, he probably has a bad heart or a bad attitude. The Bible says we need to have a good heart and a good attitude to pray effectively.

Wives:

11. ２２妻は、主に従うのと同様に、夫に従いなさい。Ephesians 5:22

This means women should “let” their husbands be the leaders of their family.

We can have a separate lesson about submission. Submission doesn’t mean women can never have input about their family’s decisions. It basically means they should yield to their husband’s wishes on important matters. If a woman’s husband is following the Bible’s guidelines, it is easy for her to submit to him because he has her best interest in mind. (If you know your husband loves you enough to die for you, it’s much easier to submit to him.)

12.２４そういうわけですから、妻は、教会がキリスト様に従うのと同じように、どんなことでも、喜んで夫に従わなければなりません。Ephesians 5:24

The Bible says there must be some order for relationships to work. As Christ is head of the church, a man should be head of his family.

13.３３そこで、もう一度言います。夫は妻を、自分の体の一部のように愛しなさい。そして妻は、夫を心から尊敬し、従いなさい。 Ephesians 5:33

A woman should honor her husband and the position God has
given him in the family. Again, if a man is following the Bible’s guidelines it’s easy to do this.

14.１８妻は夫に従いなさい。それは、主が人々のためにお定めになったことだからです。Colossians 3:18

If a woman is a Christian, she should submit to her husband because that is what the Bible says she should do. Sometimes a woman doesn’t have a husband that is worthy of this respect, but she should still try to respect his position in the family. She needs to remember that ultimately, God is in control and she should trust Him to take care of her.

15. “Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives.” 1 Peter 3:1

This verse is for Christian women who are married to men who aren’t Christians. It means you don’t have to nag your husband to get him to believe the Bible. It is better to live your life following the Bible’s guidelines. That way, your husband will see your example and want to be a Christian, too.

16. Another good verse for husbands and wives (and people in general!):

３自己中心的になったり、見栄を張ったりしてはいけません。謙そんになって、他の人を自分よりもすぐれた者とみなしなさい。Philippians 2:3

This means we should think of others before we act. We should always try to do what is best for our husband or our wife.
