The 28 PhD fellowships are in the following fields:
Biodiversity; biological sciences and bioinformatics; chemical sciences; computer sciences; earth and planetary systems sciences; envirionment, climate and sustainability; food sciences; health and genomics; mathematical sciences, statistics & economics; nano and materials sciences; natural science education; nutrition and sports; particle physics, astro physics and cosmology; plant sciences and biotechnology; quantum sciences and technology; ressource economics and global development.
All departments at the Faculty of Science participate in the TALENT programme: Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Science, Department of Food and Resource Economics, Department of Food Science, Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Department of Science Education, the Natural History Museum of Denmark and the Niels Bohr Institute.
The Doctoral Programme TALENT is offering 28 PhD scholarships in the above-mentioned 16 areas, commencing 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of SCIENCE and the 12 departments and the PhD School
Research at SCIENCE rests on two pillars: on the one hand strong basic research, and on the other application-oriented research, which contributes to growth and employment and solves societal problems, for example within climate change, sustainable energy supplies, biological production, environmental challenges, food and water safety, lifestyle diseases and IT security.
SCIENCE’s researchers have received 13 grants from the European Research Council (ERC). In the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme, SCIENCE’s researchers attracted approximately half of all the Marie Curie postdoc fellowships in Denmark. SCIENCE is also host to 15 Centers of Excellence financed by the Danish National Research Foundation (DNRF) with section heads participating in a further three. These accomplishments show that SCIENCE’s research environments have the academic weight to attract researchers at a high international level. This again testifies to the fact that the TALENT programme constitutes an extraordinary opportunity for doing a PhD.
The PhD School at SCIENCE, in which the TALENT PhD students will be enrolled, has over 1,100 students and app. 55% of them come from outside of Denmark, originating from 75 different countries. This means that even the PhD environment is highly international and competitive.

About the programme
The TALENT programme offers 74 PhD fellowships (in total) of 36 months each, attractive employment conditions at one of the 12 departments at SCIENCE and enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at SCIENCE. TALENT is a unique programme by requesting, as part of the application procedure, the applicants to devise their own interdisciplinary PhD project within one of the above-mentioned 16 programme areas/panels and to indicate the department, which they find most suitable to host their project, and the names of the main supervisor and co-supervisors. In other words, TALENT is a bottom up programme, which thereby focuses on the research interests of the PhD students. If employed, an individual Career Development Plan will be made for the TALENT PhD students, outlining scientific as well as transferable courses, international research visits/secondments, mentoring and other career enhancing activities. The Career Development plan is a central element in ensuring the right training and progress throughout the PhD project.
Job description
The position is available for a 3-year period and the key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

To manage and carry through the research project
Attend PhD courses
Write scientific articles and the PhD thesis
Teach and disseminate the research
To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
Work for the department.

Formal requirements
In order to be eligible for the TALENT Doctoral Programme, applicants:

May not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to TALENT's call deadline: 1 October 2018. Time spent on obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention, compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
Must at the TALENT call deadline (1 October 2018) be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and must not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree.
Must hold a relevant MSc degree at the time of applying. However, candidates, who do not hold an MSc degree, are also considered eligible if their credentials and CV equal those achieved on an MSc. This could be in the form of five years of full-time undergraduate and postgraduate education OR four years of full-time undergraduate education combined with relevant courses, fieldwork, scientific publications or conducted research (these aspects must be documented by uploading additional documents as part of the CV). The background is that applicants awarded a TALENT doctoral fellowship must be enrolled in the 180 ECTS/three year PhD programme at SCIENCE. To this end, the entry requirements as defined by SCIENCE’s PhD School have to be respected.

Selection criteria
The selection process includes four steps of evaluation:

Eligibility and admissibility checks
Pre-selection at department level (internal review incl. online interviews)
Expert/international review (done remotely)
Final selection of candidates.

Applicants will be judged on professional merits, scientific and technological quality of the proposed project, feasibility of the implementation and the potential impact of the proposed project. The review process takes into consideration the whole range of experience of the candidate. While focusing on their overall potential as researchers, their creativity and level of independence will also be considered. International and intersectorial experience will be seen positively in the evaluation. The selection criteria are weighted and fall into three defined areas:

Excellence (weight: 50%) of which the scientific and innovative quality of the proposal (weight: 25%) and the applicant (weight: 25%)
Impact (weight: 30%)
Implementation (weight: 20%)

Terms of employment
The Horizon 2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND rules stipulate a minimum monthly salary of EUR 2,597 (EUR 31,164 pr. year), of which H2020/MSCA/COFUND covers EUR 1,855 (EUR 22,260 pr. year). As is outlined below, SCIENCE complies fully with these rules.
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. This means that the starting yearly salary is currently at a minimum EUR 43,094 (DKK 321,054) including annual supplement (+ pension up to EUR 7,003 (DKK 52,175)). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
Any potential employment offer is contingent on the successful applicants being enrolled in the 180 ECTS/three year PhD Programme at SCIENCE, which means that the mentioned applicants will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at SCIENCE’s PhD school. Another condition is that the successful applicants obtain any permits (e.g. pertaining to residence and work), which are mandatory by law.
The PhD studies must be conducted and completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the rules of the University of Copenhagen’s/SCIENCE’s PhD School on achieving the degree.

Two recommendation letters (max. 1 page of 2,500 characters each): one should be from the master thesis supervisor (if applicable), or other senior scientist that the applicant has worked closely with.

MSc Scholarship for UK and EU Students

Programme Description
In a joint research project between Watford Community Housing and the University of Hertfordshire Department of Engineering and Technology we invite applications for an M.Sc by Research student to undertake research into offsite manufacturing methods for the provision of affordable housing. This one-year project requires an M.Sc student to undertake a collaborative research project with support from University academic and industrial supervisor(s).
The project will involve researching methods for offsite manufacture of housing to produce low-cost, high-quality, affordable housing, and carrying out a comparative study of six existing sites that are being developed in Hertfordshire using different construction methods. This will require close working with the client (Watford Community Housing) and with designers, project managers, contractors and end-users.
Start date: October 2018 or as soon thereafter as possible.
Duration: One year
Company: Watford Community Housing
Stipend: A University research studentship of £14,777 will be payable for one year from the start of the research project. The student will be registered for a research degree of M.Sc by Research and will also receive a maximum contribution of £4,695 towards their individual tuition fees that is equivalent to the Home/EU student fee in each year of registration.

For awardees who need more than three years to complete their PhD studies, additional support may be provided by the chosen institutions. Introduction

The Ernst Schering Foundation supports outstanding young scientists to conduct basic research in human-biology, medicine (except dentistry) or bio-organic chemistry (including related interdisciplinary fields of research). The Foundation awards about 7 doctoral fellowships annually for students to carry out research projects at prestigious institutes either at home or abroad. The fellowships are awarded for a two-year period.

Fellowship amount

As of April 2011, the fellowship amount is 1.300,00 EUR/month. Fellowship recipients who live abroad may be eligible for a cost-of-living adjustment, which will be calculated on the basis of the Federal Ministry of Finance rates that are valid at the time of the fellowship award. In addition, fellows receive a monthly materials allowance of 100,00 EUR to cover travel expenses, books, etc. The participation in a scientific conference we support with a total amount of max. 1.000,00 EUR. The children’s allowance is 400,00 EUR/month for the first child; for each additional child, the allowance is 300,00 EUR/month.

User Interface Support for Multi-Level Collaborative Information Retrieval

Applications are invited for this full-time PhD research studentship within the School of Engineering and Built Environment at Glasgow Caledonian University. The studentship is for a period of three and a half years (42 months), subject to satisfactory progress and provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus an annual stipend of £14,600 [please note that students from outside the EU are required to pay the difference between International and EU fees, currently this would amount to £6,672 per annum]. The successful candidate is expected to undertake up to 6 hours of academic support activity per week.

Project Description

Collaborative information retrieval (CIR) is a field of research that involves studying situations, motivations, and methods for people working in collaborative groups for information seeking projects, as well as building systems for supporting such activities. Most systems for explicit CIR assume users have equality in terms of data flow, information access etc. This is not always the case e.g. in a medical scenario doctors, patients, family, insurance providers etc. have differing information needs and needs to share/not share information, this is multi-level collaborative information retrieval (MLCIR). Unlike traditional CIR, MLCIR systems must be aware of the information flow in a group, ensuring no information contamination and inadvertent disclosure of information, while supporting collaboration. This type of information interaction is common in industrial, military and government organisations. To date no systems/approaches have been proposed to address these unique problems for information retrieval. As such this project will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to develop some of the first tools and methodologies to facilitate MLCIR.

This project also provides the successful candidate with the opportunity to be part of a vibrant research community. In particular there are strong and vibrant IR and HCI research communities in Scotland, and this project presents an overlap between the two topics. The candidate will gain experience in a number of skill areas, including, interface design, user interaction design, experimental design and programming on a wide range of devices and platforms.

PhD Research Studentship

Development of on-line measurement technique for insulation assessment

Project Description:

This project is aimed at an area of insulation diagnostics which is of importance to the electrical transmission and distribution community. Partial discharge (PD) activity is an indicator of faults in insulation but detection does not provide the ideal answer to condition monitoring as PD indicates a serious fault requiring rapid intervention by the user. The project proposes to investigate methods for measuring deterioration of insulation systems prior to the stage that partial discharge occurs. Water, trees and other regions of low relative impedance in insulation cause overheating and are a precursor to more accelerated degradation forms. Developing knowledge and instrumentation to diagnose non-PD faults would have significant impact on electricity supply reliability.

The project will investigate impedance spectroscopy, dielectric measurement systems, conductance measurement systems, etc. Simulation of changes in practical conformations of insulation would determine the suitability of methods of investigation.

From the techniques investigated and simulations, an appropriate methodology for determining localised changes in insulation properties, in a practical on-line manner, will be selected. A prototype instrument would be developed to prove the viability of carrying out on-line insulation assessment.

Development of meta-materials based photonic sensors for environmental monitoring

Project Description

This exciting project, which involves collaboration with the University of Glasgow, aims to investigate and develop photonic sensors based on novel meta-materials for environmental monitoring applications.

Photonic meta-materials based on micro-structured arrays of metal elements, such as split-ring resonators (SRR), have been demonstrated to have unique optical properties that can enable a range of exciting and novel applications for optical spectroscopy. SRRs have been reported to provide enhanced sensitivity for detection of molecular resonances of organic materials and surface enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy.

The project will provide the candidate with the opportunity to gain experience in the three key skill areas, 1) development of computer simulations based on Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method, 2) state of the art nano-fabrication techniques for photonic structures and 3) advanced optical characterisation and spectroscopy techniques.

Development of a novel technique for the measurement of the moisture buffering capacity of surface finishes in buildings

Project Description:

Materials can have a positive effect on moderating the variation of indoor humidity in occupied buildings. This ability is known as moisture buffering.

The overall aim of the project would be to improve our understanding of the use of materials to reduce environmental impacts due to moisture. For example, can moisture buffering save energy by reducing the requirement for ventilation? Is it possible to improve the indoor air quality by using moisture buffering to control humidity?

The objectives of this proposal are to (i) develop methods to assess moisture buffering following on from a preliminary investigation by Dr. Baker and (ii) enhance the theoretical framework for moisture modelling of buildings.

The work would involve:

· The design of a small-scale test system and the development of a test methodology for the measurement of moisture buffering of a range of building materials and finishes under dynamic conditions.

· Performance of full-scale tests under controlled dynamic conditions in the Environmental Chamber in SEBE.

· Validation and development of the hygro-thermal simulation model using both small- and full-scale test data.

· The determination of how well the steady state properties of materials used as the basis for a hygro-thermal simulation model enable the prediction of the dynamic conditions found in real buildings.

· The assessment of the benefits of moisture buffering as a strategy for controlling humidity to improve indoor air quality and energy saving.

There will be collaboration with ESRU, University of Strathclyde on modelling aspects.

The demand for understanding of digital forensic methods continues to increase as criminals exploit rapid technological advances to achieve unintended opportunities in the commission of crime, and employ ingenious methods to invalidate evidence. However, devices can inadvertently serve as silent witnesses to user activity, by storing information about user interactions.

The popularity of iOS devices is causing challenges for law enforcement, including those related to the effects of natural data movement in push-based cloud solutions. Understanding basic device functionality (e.g., what and how data is stored) is vital so this project aims to consider the forensic impact of deleting data on iOS devices, and establishing novel techniques for recovery.

The project will address challenges such as uncontrolled data transfer, data contamination, and the unintended prospect for obstructing and obscuring investigations for law enforcement and corporate forensic examiners. This project will allow the candidate to be part of a large Scottish digital forensics community, and will include collaboration with the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA).

Improved Visualisation of Network Attacks

Project Description

As computer networks grow with an increasing number of users and connecting devices, and a wide variety of communicating applications, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between good and bad network traffic. For criminals, the Internet provides a fertile playground for nefarious activities in which they can often hide and move about with relative ease. While there are numerous tools for detecting network attacks, it remains a challenge to present the information in a manner that facilitates clear and consistent actions by a network investigator or administrator.

The ultimate goal of this project is to develop new, usable methods for visualising network attacks that take into account the 'human factor'. Such a result will require effort in other areas, such as the source and manner of network data collection, and the method of data analysis so that the project is likely to involve novel contributions in these areas as well.

This project will allow the candidate to be part of a large Scottish networking community and encourage the application of their technical skills to practical problems. The candidate will gain experience in a number of skill areas, including networks, network security, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and visualisation.

Cloud computing is a new way for access to and utilisation of extensively distributed, outsourced resources. Virtualisation is the fundamental concept. When third-party resources are deployed to provide services, two distinctive characteristics are multi-tenancy and ultra-scalability, which make cloud computing suffer totally unconventional security challenges. New security issues arise at cloud applications, virtualisations, and data and networks. Intermingled throughout are the delegation and trust of authentication, authorisations, accounting of user identities, and accesses across multiple layers and domains. This project will conduct a systematic study into cloud security and build up a working prototype cloud environment in which essential security techniques are integrated, and then propose a robust mechanism for identity federation and access control and implement it in the prototype for performance evaluations.

Advanced Audio Technology for Creation of Environmental Sound Maps

Project Description

Increasing population and noise associated with urban life has led to environmental noise becoming the focus of government efforts to measure noise levels and its effects upon the population. Noise maps are used to illustrate environmental noise levels and how they differ geographically. There is a need for detailed and specific data from noise maps - in particular the accuracy of modelled noise levels at a particular location and its effect upon those living or working in that area. This information can be used as a basis for the communication of information on environmental noise to the public. One means of addressing these issues is the creation of accurate audio models of environmental sound.

This project will provide the candidate with an ideal opportunity to develop their experience and expertise in audio and acoustics processing and modelling. In particular, auralisation of sound maps through binaural processing, and development of environmental noise classification algorithms. This kind of advanced audio technology has unique potential to build measures of human perception of noise into environmental sound maps, and to create an interactive audio tool for communicating information on environmental noise to the public.
