East Delh building Collapsed killing several people Probe ordered

The Delhi Govt ordered a judicial probe into the East Delhi building collapse that killed 67 and left 82 injured even as the owner maintained the building was not illegal.

Around 20 people are still feared trapped.Former HC judge Lokeshwar Prasad will conduct the inquiry and submit his report within 90 days.

The probe will fix responsibility both individual and institutional for the collapse of the building and indicate the measures required to improve the responses and prevent such incidents in future.

New blood test to identify HIV status of newborns

A simple blood test is now helping India identify the status of children born to
HIV positive mothers as early as six weeks after their birth, instead of 18
months. Till recently, paediatricians in India, on detection of anti-HIV
antibodies in children below 18 months, could never tell for sure whether they
were already infected or the antibodies were transferred to them from their
mother. India, in March carried out the highly accurate DNA PCR (polymerase
chain reaction) test in the four high prevalence states of Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Available in 767 Integrated Counselling
and Testing Centres (ICTCs) and 180 ART centres, the DNA PCR can test the blood
sample of a child after it reaches six weeks of age and accurately say whether
it is already infected with HIV or not.

Sealdah-bound Uttarbanga Express from New Coochbehar rammed into the rear of the
Bhagalpur-Ranchi Vananchal Express at Sainthia station in Birbhum district early
Monday morning. Heavy casualty are feared as three coaches, two unreserved and a
luggage (SLR) van, of Ranchi-bound Vananchal Express turned into a mangled heap
of steel due to the impact.

Dowry deaths on increase in National Capital

Two women are killed for dowry each week in Delhi. According to Delhi Police
figures 66 cases of dowry deaths have been registered in the first half of 2010
alone.The dates from 6 July to 18 July saw 5 women from across the
socio-economic spectrum being found dead in their in-laws homes.According to the
police sources in all 5 cases the victims' families alleged that their daughters
are harassed for months by their in-laws had been murdered for dowry.Cases of
dowry death are registered at respective police stations and an SDM level enqiry
has been ordered in each case.Most of the victims are in their 20s and had been
married for a period ranging between six months to a year.Delhi police is
seeking the help of NGOs to counter this sociological menace.Independent social
workers working in localities have also joined .The volunteers from Mahila
panchayats and Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee have also been
incorporated in the project
