Arise Davao 2013: Light Will Shine

Ministers and youth leaders from various churches and denominations in Davao City comprise Arise Philippines Youth Movement.We bridge the youth and young adults to rise up for Jesus and reach out those who are still in the world of sin.

The movement accepts the annual challenge to take the lead in mobilizing young generation to stand for Jesus through CONFERENCE, COMMUNITY OUTREACH and CONCERT

In partnership with ARISE ASIA based in Australia and in collaboration with Davao City Churches, we want the city to witness the following:

1) To see hundreds of young people added to local churches;

2) To further the inspiration and enthusiasm of those who are already serving the Lord;

3) To mobilize the youth and young adults in serving the community through community outreach;

4) To lift up the name of Jesus with our brothers and sisters from all churches while working hand in hand for His glory and honor.

We would like to appeal to every church in the city to be one of our partners to make this goal achievable in making this event more successful.Together, we can continue what has been started in mobilizing our young generation, giving them an opportunity to experience greater impact in their personal lives.Thus, allowing them to experience transformation and eventually become a blessing to their family,to the church as well as in the community.

Twilight Saga-Breaking Dawn Part II Movie Review

The fighting scene in the clearing of the Cullens with their allies against the Volturi is the most exciting of Breaking Dawn Part Two. The people in the cinema start to make noise when Carlisle died in Aro's hand.Our heart starts to race as the fight goes on.

Moviegoers can't stop yelling when Jasper,Seth and Leah lost in the battle.Well, that event explains the cover photo of Stephenie Meyer's last book of her Twilight Saga.The chess image tells that both parties are able to lose some of their members just like playing the board game.Jane, Alec,Marcus,Caius and Aro were eliminated and declares the Cullens' victory.

However, nothing beats the fact that the fight occurred in the big screen is just Alice's vision.She let Aro see it for himself.Aro, then decided not to create any chaos between them because that would endanger their existence and the power they currently have. The twist makes us enjoy and love the movie!It's worth watching! The sound and visual effects are not bad.

I never thought I would take part in any movement. I rarely go out and I didn't like being around with many people so I didn't expect seeing myself doing community service. My focus were solely on my family and my studies. I don't even pay attention to different extra-curricular activities in school.However, time leads me to get involved in my community and in my city when I was an elected youth official, to be part of a children's advocacy after college and to have the chance to become a volunteer in Arise Philippines Youth Movement Incorporated.

I firmly believe in the power of 'we'.I've been inspired with the vision of Arise which is standing for what we believe in and becoming a channel of change for next generation by conducting conference for youth leaders, medical, dental and optical services, child feeding, giving away free medicines and construction of public toilet.

On July 31, we were in Barangay 31-D where the community toilet is constructed for the official turn-over.With the help of the Australians who have burden for Davao, the vision has turned into a reality.Arise Davao 2013 is looking forward to donating another toilet that will be located in Matina Aplaya. A study shows that there's a presence of coliforms in Punta Dumalag caused by improper waste disposal of people living along the shoreline. With this, Arise has chosen the said barangay where the project will be implemented.

The movement believes that helping a community by giving support to the septage and sewage ordinance of the city will give honor to the Creator of everything and not to man.It requires passion to get yourself involved. You don't need to be in the position to lend a hand.Giving service is one way of showing your love.

On the last day of July this year, the humanitarian project of Arise Davao is officially turned over to the constituents of Barangay 31-D in Boulevard.Spearheaded by the national coordinator of Arise Philippines Youth Movement, Incorporated in the person of Rev.Danny Lagdamen, we witness how the barangay officials gratefully accept the responsibility in maintaining the sanity of the newly constructed public common toilet.

Along with us are the personnel from the local government who remind the residents on the importance of having one in their community. Signing the memorandum of agreement followed after the cutting of ribbon.

This project is made possible through the initiative of individuals who look after the safety, cleanliness and development of Davao in support to the septage and sewerage ordinance of the city.People with a heart of gold has made this vision into a reality.In partnership with Arise Asia, this has been a success. Above all, God has made everything possible.

The construction of public toilet in the said area is part of the humanitarian outreach of Arise Davao 2012 event.The volunteers understand that the people in Purok 8 don't have septic tanks and most of them can hardly afford to build their own comfort room.Thus, leaving their human waste to the coastal area.

To God be all the glory.

On the 12th day of June, my country celebrates its National Independence. Since it's holiday and everybody's free to go out I went to Samal Island. My family and friends are invited to go to a private resort where everything is unlimited! We enjoy the food,the drinks and kayaking for free and as long as we want!God bless the couple for sharing their material blessings to us.They even shoulder our travel expenses.Their floating hut is super cool!

We rode on a speedboat. It was nice to get on it with my companions.We enjoy seeing the green mountains and the rushing waters. I've been to some places on that island but it was my first time to visit Balet where the resort is located.

Swimming and snorkeling is the most enjoyable for me. It feels so great to see the corals! They're like colorful flowers under my feet.If uncle Dodong didn't get near me and called my attention I wouldn't realize that I was getting far from them.The water current was very strong then.

There's kayak contest and prizes are given to the winners. We had fun. They're planning to go back there and have an overnight stay. If it happens, I will definitely take a picture of the corals. The underwater camera went lobat before I did snorkeling.It really pays to have the ability to swim and dive underwater.

There's a long queue of cars in the wharf and it was dark when I got home.I feel the freedom that my ancestors fought for how many years. I wouldn't enjoy this kind of outdoor activity if it weren't because of them who gave their lives for our liberty.

The Saint '98 Reunion

It was fourteen years ago when I left my Grade school Alma Matter.Many things happened in San Roque Central Elementary School that I don't want to remember. Some of my classmates would keep my school stuff,take my money allowance and the guys would hit the girls.I have had bad teachers too. I can't fully remember everyone. It's hard for me to recall all my classmates. Those who are in Top 10 and my close friends are retained in my head though.

My batch mates have been seeing each other. In fact they have attended our reunion twice already. I wasn't ready then to see and join them. I was afraid of something. I wasn't strong enough to face them. I don't know what they think about me or how they have remembered me. Most importantly, I'm scared of seeing those people who have hurt me.

But last weekend's gathering has changed my mind about them.I was wrong when I thought that it's going to be a boring get together that's why I didn't take some pictures.We play games by the beach, swim,sing and eat together. We also decided to go to the falls to get ourselves refreshed.The sun shines so bright and we feel so warm. It was fun to remember our experiences in the past. We laugh altogether talking about our teachers!

People change and we should open our mind about it. I am truly happy to see them again and they are very accommodating. They have welcomed me and I have no regrets spending time with them. There are some who who are unable to come since they work abroad and live far from Davao.Others have very important things to attend to but they give their share by sponsoring our food.

The month of May has been great for me. Attending a youth gathering that helps me become a better person is such a great opportunity. I always feel I'm being found because everything I do now leads me to choose what is right and what is true.

I enjoyed all the activities we had. The games are energy-giving. They're fun and very enjoyable! Having this kind of chance to be with my fellow youth makes me feel I'm having a normal teenage life.

Before the summer camp that was held in Villa Cristina Orchids and Garden Resort in Los Amigos I got a feeling that is not good. However, after the 3-day camp I was able to clear my mind. Like the gray cloud that vanishes then you see the blue sky as the sun rises up.

Participating in such healthy activity reminds me of who I am. It helps me remember how I received the most special gift in my life. It teaches me perseverance. To ask, to wait and to obey. To live the kind of life that's pleasing in the eyes of the One who created me and shaping my heart after His.

Kamp Pagasa has never stopped teaching me. Year after year I gain valuable insights on how to stay calm and firm despite having all those destructive factors. People's negligence on their duties and inevitable occurrences that generally affects the activity could have totally broke me and allowed me to reach my elastic limit!However, I am surprised that I was able to hold my temper.I just realized the things I'm capable of doing. That I can disagree in an agreeable manner.It's good to know that I can still be nice to people who aren't to me and to the staff. I'm an officer and I have to control the crowd since the first person in rank was sent by our mayor in Manila for PWD's National Conference so I have to take over.

Kamp Pagasa 2012 that was held in Palma Gil Elementary School in Quirino is indeed fun! I see new campers.It's worth sacrificing to see their smiles.It keeps my pain and sleepless nights away to see them on stage performing and enjoying all the games.

I have met new volunteers too. The summer camp for children with disability is not possible without the commitment of every volunteer to take care one child for seven days. As well as the support coming from the city government of Davao and different agencies has contributed to the fullness of Kamp Pagasa.Our deepest thanksgiving to all our sponsors that sustained us throughout the duration of the camp for their donations.

The success of this life-changing summer camp is dedicated to all the children with special needs.Let's not forget that they're part in our community and they have rights to be respected. Differebtly-abled persons are truly special for they give us unique inspiration that would change our attitude towards life. Thank you and God bless every heart that sincerely help.To God be all the glory!

Light Over Darkness

The season of lent is observed to commemorate the greatest form of love that the world receive. Christians believe that the Heavenly Father has sacrificed His only Son to redeem the sins of this world. Every time I have problems I always compare mine to what Jesus has experienced on earth in the hands of men. Sometimes my heartaches almost tear me apart.Yes it breaks me but remembering what my Creator has undergone, I regain my strength and see my life with Him along my way.The things He did before He was crucified were way too much compared to my difficulties in life. So, I'm now carrying my own cross with a hopeful heart.

People are not perfect. So is our life. Struggles come to test us. To check our faith and prove what has to be proven. We face problems. What I want is to have that courage to accept things and continue to move forward despite having these negative things in my life.

I do believe that God will never stop blessing and keeping my family.

Davao Pearl Farm Resort

I just found out that I was not able to publish this post! It's been sleeping in my draft folder! I didn't realize that I forgot to finish my review. It's been two years now!I went to the popular beach in Davao with a kind woman.She has chosen me to be with her on that day.I thank her for doing it. She knows I love swimming.

Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Davao is one of the nicest and coolest beaches I've ever been.The one in Panglao Island is also great! It can take your breath away and I'm proud that in Mindanao we have this fantastic place where you can spend a day with your love ones.Pearl Farm is not crowded.They control the number of people visiting the resort daily.The food is decent.Moreover, you can do different aqua sports! We wanted to try jet skiing but there was no more available for us. We tried banana boat ride instead.

Malipano Island is still a part of Pearl Farm. It's truly magnificent. The water is so clear and inviting! The stunning view of the area made me forget my worries in life.

For newlyweds, it's definitely a marvelous place to go on a honeymoon!

Don't leave Davao without experiencing the joy to be there. Grab the chance to have a tranquil setting. Savor the calmness and quietness it gives you while filling your eyes with natural beauty. I feel like a child when I was there and whole body massage completed our breathtaking experience!

Haven in Kaputian

The day after we arrived in Davao from Cebu, my family is invited to go to Samal Island.It's my uncle's birthday. They live in Kaputian,Island Garden City of Samal.It was a blissful feeling to be in a new beach resort. It's been a long time since I last visited my uncle's house.

Never did I expect that Kaputian has another white beach that fills our day with fun!I have visited some places or islands in IGACOS but I never heard of this place from friends! Summer time is at hand. It's school break. The people in Davao will surely like to be here. Residents say there's a troop of monkeys if you walk around the little forest.We had no time to check it out because the clouds suddenly turned dark and we had to leave. The sun is so bright and the surrounding is so warm. I actually don't have plans of getting myself wet because I didn't bring my swimming attire. I thought we'll be staying in for the entire day. I was indeed surprised to see this place!

We make a way to get into the water though. There are no other people. The place looks so remote and the road is so rough! People from the city might find it difficult to travel but it's all worth it!

I had the chance to see the Queen City of the South for the second time around. I visited Cebu in 2007 and I am happy to be there again. I was with a group of people but this time I accompanied my aunt who needs to check a land property. We stayed in Lapu Lapu City. It's situated in Mactan Island where the airport is. So, we've been to Mactan Shrine where Lapu Lapu's monument stands.He is the first Filipino hero who killed Magellan, a Portuguese explorer. Lapu Lapu is the first Filipino native who defended our freedom against the foreign invaders.

You need to cross Marcelo Fernan bridge or the other bridge to reach Mandaue and Cebu City. Looking around and seeing the number of establishments I would say that Cebu is better than my city when it comes to business prosperity. I always see foreigners everywhere we go. Most of them are Taiwanese, Chinese and Korean nationals. A worker from Fort San Pedro was very kind to be with us all the time to take us some pictures.

I have seen Cebu Cathedral. History tells that the Spaniards has brought Christianity in the Philippines. They have influenced our people in what we believe now.My aunt is Roman Catholic so I stayed inside and attended the mass with her.In Mindanao, the Spaniards had a hard time in reaching their goal. Although they have successfully converted some of us to Christians, there's still a large number of Muslims in the southern part of the country.

I looked closely at Magellan's Cross which signifies their arrivals in Cebu.It is housed in a chapel fronting Cebu City Hall.The paintings on the ceiling and on the walls will help you understand the events that took place in the past.

We have a look at the luxurious Shangri- La Hotel and enter Cebu Waterfront Hotel and Casino where I saw Anabel Rama, a Filipina actress and talent manager. It was holiday when we arrived since the people in Cebu remember the legacy of Don Vicente Rama. He is the Father of Cebu City Charter. Don Vicente is a journalist who become a congressman, mayor and senator.We also dine and walk around Cebu's Business Park which is commonly called as the I.T park of the city. Of course we didn't miss Sto. Nino Basilica.

Aunt Joji is very accommodating.I enjoyed my week-long stay in their house. I sleep comfortably and their bathroom is clean.I met my mom's old friend whom she met in Germany.I actually planned to meet some relatives and friends while I was there but I hadn't had enough time.We also visited Taoist Temple and had a nice view of the city.

Cebu is known for guitar factories. You would love to buy native products they offer. You shouldn't leave the city without their dried mangoes and dried fish! There are also beautiful beaches like in Bantayan Island and resorts like the Plantation Bay.I enjoy sight-seeing and being in different places makes me feel good. I always love traveling and I'd still want to see more!

Every year the children with down syndrome come together to engage themselves in an annual parade called Happy Walk. It happens in accordance to National Syndrome Consciousness Month. This outdoor activity welcomes different organizations like Boy and Girl Scouts of the Philippines that support DSAPI which is also a way of showing to people that these children exist and to remind us that they're part in our society.

The parade starts in Freedom Park and ends in People's Park. There is a short program and dance presentation from the kids. Free soup is also provided.

Series of Robbery and Murder in Davao

The security and safety of Davao City is currently questioned by my fellow constituents due to the robbery and killings that is currently happening. We are all alarmed with the sudden death of six women in a week! It's very shocking to know that the peaceful Davao is attacked by terrorists! Davao is known to be one of the most livable city in the country but as of now, we are afraid to walk alone in the streets of Davao even in the broad daylight. The death of the victims has warned us to be more careful.

We celebrate the birth of Davao on the 16th of March and it's not a good sign to begin the celebration. It gives us worries. How can we enjoy it if we don't know who's the victim and where in Davao it will happen?

With the incidents going on right now, some Dabawenyos call for the attention of DDS. There's no certainty that it exists though. Nobody distinctively claimed that he is the one who created it. Davao Death Squad as I heard punishes the violators of the law that allows summary execution. I can't point a certain person responsible for the death of the suspects. I am aware that our vice mayor Rodrigo Duterte is very vocal in making the public know that he doesn't want the presence of robbers, drug pushers, bombers, and other perpetrators of crimes in the city but is his statement below will confirm the rumors? I'm not drawing any conclusion here so the idea now depends on every individual.

My sincere condolences to the family of the victims. The victims were all women and it gives us terror. It hinders us from going out with confidence.Having this thing in Davao is like a nightmare. I'm not used to living in this kind of place that puts our life at stake when outside home. I want the old Davao back. A simple yet safe city that promises good life to the residence of Davao.

Angel's Walk

Angels with Autism Walk is an annual walk that happened around SM Mall last month. There was a short program at the entertainment area.I saw the kids perform and everybody's happy to see them trying to give their best. Services are offered for the children with special needs such as Persons With Disability or PWD I.D registration, distribution of Vitamin A and deworming tablets plus pedia consultation.

Waling Waling as Philippines' National Flower- A Good Idea?

A fragrant small white flower called sampaguita is the national flower of the Philippines I have known since I was a kid.It is chosen because of the fact that sampaguita is popular in Filipino legends and it's ornamental use.But the bill submitted by Davao City Representative Mylene Garcia-Albano makes me believe that it makes sense. It is a proposal making the Queen of Philippine Orchids which is Waling Waling to be the new symbol of Philippine flower.Why? Because of the following reasons:

Waling Waling has wide and colorful petals that reflects the hopeful attitude of Filipinos.Whereas, the simplicity of Sampaguita I think is no longer suitable nowadays.
Waling Waling grows on tall hardwood tropical trees reaching for the sunlight as it climbs that symbolizes Filipinos perseverance and love for hard work. The flower has commensalism kind of relationship on trees that refers to the good relationship of the Philippines to our allied nations.Unlike sampaguita that stays on the ground that may be described as a Filipino who is contented and doesn't dream big.
When you look at waling waling you see bright future, long-term goals and worldwide achievements.Sampaguita, on the other hand, settles only for what we have when change, innovation and recreation is possible!
Waling Waling is like a modern Filipino but sampaguita looks like a traditional one that is contented.Its white color however that symbolizes purity is a good thing. (I don't think my readers agree to second sentence though.)
Waling Waling is endemic in Davao, Sultan Kudarat, Zamboanga and other parts of Mindanao.The native country of waling waling is indeed in the Philippines.I remember entering Filipino houses having different kinds of orchids in their gardens which is very common.On the contrary, sampaguita is a foreign flower from India and Arabia.

It's not because I live in Davao and I'm from Mindanao that's why I'm promoting this. Yes, I take pride because waling waling originally came from my city but I think making the Philippine Orchid as the National Flower in the Philippines is a good idea.

I'm pointing out the national spirit. I would agree that the national symbol of a country should reflect to the national character and vision of its constituents. Modern Filipinos have high aspirations. In my opinion, it's better to make a change. Waling waling defines Davao, Mindanao and Philippines as a whole.

The second largest and easternmost island in the Philippines (Mindanao) is blessed with bountiful harvest, mineral deposits and beautiful flowers with its vast and rich forest. Let's not be blinded with the kidnappings, bombings and peace issues going on. Try to find out other good things about the land of promise.

Love Story

On the first day of February this year at exactly 12:01am I finished reading Erich Segal's Love Story. It's a story of love that stood the test of time.When I closed the book and get my phone to check the time I realized it's the month for love.Going on a date on the 14th didn't cross my mind though.

Oliver and Jenny's love story started beautifully but ended too soon. I totally enjoyed flipping the pages knowing how their love for each other grows.My emotions switched though when Jenny was diagnosed with leukemia and is dying. I slowly felt the pain the main character is facing.Jenny is truly a strong woman that softens the stone heart of a father and his son. The woman's life plays an important role to the Barretts.

Jenny Cavallerie, a graduate in Radcliffe as magna cum laude serves as the key for the reconciliation of Oliver Barrett IV and his son Oliver Barret III.

When I first saw the title of the book I thought about a happy ending of the couple.Well, I thought wrong so my expectation for Oliver and Jen suddenly dropped.However, it was made clear to me as I continue to read that Jenny's death has bridged the broken father-son relationship.Oliver learned something from Jen which is life-changing for him.Oliver's crying moment in his father's arms outside Mt. Sinai Hospital was the most touching part of the story for me. I cried a bit because I'm having a gap with my father.

Love Story will feed you with sweetness and strength that love can bring as Oli and Jen stay together.Oliver has given up his richness his father could have passed on to him.While Jen has given up her love for music and the chance to be in Europe for him. She waved goodbye to see Paris and forget about her scholarship that comes only once. But the twist comes at the end.

Love means never having to say you're sorry...

Facebook's Zuckerberg has Asperger's Syndrome

There are some people who are ungrateful for the creation of the popular social networking site which is facebook but you would probably agree with me if I say that majority of people love it!A yahoo article that tells about the The Confessions of a Facebook Employee gives me an idea that the CEO and co-founder of facebook has Asperger's. Individuals who have this syndrome shows difficulty in social interaction. They do restricted and repetitive behavior of interest. I believe that because of this condition, Zuckerberg has created facebook and it makes us enjoy the things it gives us.

Early this morning I've come across a news photo on my wall that says Facebook is closing on March 15,201.I'm not sure if it's true or just another hoax. Is it? I've read Zuckerberg doesn't care how much billions he makes. All he wants now is to have his old life back. I don't own a company but I understand how difficult it is to deal with different problems because of the thing you created.

A goal-driven person is likely to achieve what he wants to get.World Business leaders have characters that others might see it negatively but realize that it's one of factors why the dream has come to a reality.They have strong personalities that contributes to their success.I remember a point of Andrew Bosworth that talks about trusting Zuckerberg's plan and ability although his boss is not apparently showing confirmation or reaction to their suggestion/proposition. I think it's a good idea to let the people know that Zuckerberg has Asperger's to make it easy for people to work with him and accept his natural behavior in which we find unusual.

Asperger is an autism spectrum disorder.Last Saturday we had our Autism Walk for 16th National Autism Consciousness Week with the theme: Making the rights real for Filipinos with Autism.I'm happy to be a volunteer for children with disabilities and have the exposure. It's really important to know more about this disorder to help the person who has it. Like Mark Zuckerberg, his employees will widen their minds and deepen their understanding about their boss if they know the nature of a person who has asperger.

Enchanted River

The stunning blue lagoon that has a captivating beauty found in Barangay Talisay, Hinatuan Surigao del Sur is the Echanted River. The name of the river is coined from the wonder it brings to the people. They say nobody has ever gone to the deepest part of it. Enchanted River is like a small paradise hidden behind tall trees in a mountainous area.It's clear and partly salty water that connects to the Pacific Sea has given me a wonderful swimming experience before November ends last year. December had been a busy month for me so I had no time to share this right after we visited Surigao.

I enjoyed every moment when I was there. I didn't use my life jacket because I could hardly swim. The water current is strong and it's stronger in the shallow part. I jumped into the crystal clear water that nobody knows how deep.

At lunchtime all the people are required to get out of the water for the feeding time of the fish. The fish are fed with background music and it makes you think that they are showing respect to whoever and whatever creature that keeps Enchanted River a protected area.

Hearsay is pass on from generation to generation that the river remained enchanting because it is preserved by supernatural. It is believed that fairies stay there and make it their home.We were lucky to have an underwater camera! It makes our memories and weekend excursion more awesome!

Goodbye and Thank You 2011

Today marks the last hours of 2011. The year when I had hurtful experiences. Doubts come that I started to search myself. I keep on planning things for myself trying to find what I really want but I ended up setting my personal desires aside.Months passed and I carefully weighed the bad things happened and decided to forget about my pride and start over again. I admit I hurt people and I want to repair what has been broken.

On the other hand, this year has partially filled the emptiness in my heart when I found my new spiritual family. In addition, I realized it's a good thing to free myself from an unhealthy relationship. Now, my focus is on my spiritual growth, family, genuine friends, career, social participation and volunteer work.

Despite all the negative things, 2011 has opened my heart again. I realized I am really blessed with amazing people and should start counting all the blessing the year has given me.With all the material resources I enjoy I am able to do things better and helping becomes easy. To have the chance to visit new places in Manila, Davao and Surigao before 2011 closes even makes me happier!

I am actually excited to write my new experiences in 2012! In the coming year I expect more wonderful things to come! Happy moments to happen.I can't wait for the planned activities we have! Major things will happen and it makes my heart pump faster!New Year means having new experiences to define who I am.

Sorting my clothes, doing general house clean-up and making myself clean are the usual things we do before new year comes. Mom gives away our old clothing, bags and shoes so we have to decide which would go for donations. On the contrary, the most important thing of all is to check our hearts, renew our minds and do better things in every situation. My mom inculcate in us that physical change is not good enough for a change but to have the heart with love, compassion, joy and thanksgiving is more desirable.

December has been a busy month for me that I had no time to publish posts. I've attended Christmas parties here and there. I enjoyed being with my nieces for their school's Christmas activities. I tried my best not to miss the invitations I get from different organization. I've attended reunions and was happy to see old faces. It was nice to hear stories from my classmates in grade school,high school and college.Most importantly I celebrated my birthday!
