What is EQ?

There are two kinds of general intelligence:

1. Cognitive

2. Noncognitive

Cognitive intelligence is measured by IQ (Intelligence Quotient) and it indicates our ability to concentrate, focus, understand, remember, learn and recall as well as our ability to think things out, solve problems, and apply what we have learned.

Noncognitive intelligence includes emotional, personal and social abilities and skills that are important for efficiently and successfully coping with daily demands. It is how we understand ourselves, relate to other people and our ability to adapt to new and different situations. We call this Emotional Intelligence and it is measured by EQ (Emotional Quotient).

Emotional Intelligence (EI) can be defined as “the array of emotional, personal and social abilities and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures.” Said another way, it is your “people skills.” It is that noncognitive ability to get along and to deal with a myriad of situations successfully and easily. EI helps predict success because it reflects how a person applies knowledge of a personal and interpersonal nature to the immediate environment. Because of this, many people refer to EQ as a measure of “street smarts” or “common sense.”

Why the Bar-On EQ-I Assessment?

The Bar-On EQ-I assessment was developed in 1985 and has been tested and normed with thousands of respondents. The test is both statistically reliable and valid. It features four separate validity indicators, allowing confidence that respondents are being honest in their responses.

All respondents are compared not to a general population sample, but rather to other normed respondents grouped by national origin, age group and gender. Ways you can use the Bar-On EQ-i.

Ways to Use EQ-I

• Hiring - who has the propensity to be successful? Who comes to the table with the necessary skills?

• Budgeting for Training - what to spend and where?

• Measuring the Impact of Training - assessing the impact in your company (before, during and after assessments)

• Teambuilding - the more they know about themselves and share with others, the closer they are

• Personal Development - what are your strengths and weaknesses and what do you need to do to make yourself better?

• Benchmarking - identify your top performers and measure others against them

• Predict Behavior - know who will be your best manager in the future, etc.

• Performance Evaluations - accurately measure who is making progress in personal development.

• Low - may be setting goals too high, or may feel like they are not where they want to be and not moving towards it

Reality Testing

• High - good at sizing up situations, well-grounded, realistic

• Low - unrealistic, perception and reality are very different, overreacting positively or negatively

Flexibility

• High - can adjust emotions, thoughts and behaviors to changing situations

• Low - rigid, unable to change regardless of environment

Problem Solving

• High - can identify, assess, weigh pros and cons of multiple solutions to a problem and chose the best solution

• Low - may not persevere and work through until the problem is solved. May not consider options in problem solving and simply take easiest way out

Stress Tolerance

• High - able to deal with stressful situations without falling apart

• Low - may become overwhelmed or act inappropriately under stress

Impulse Control

• High - can stick to a plan and resist temptations and distractions

• Low - may flit from thing to thing. Acts on whims without thinking through consequences

Optimism

• High - can maintain a bright outlook on life even in the face of adversity.

• Low - gets down in the dumps easily. Sees the negative side of things first

Happiness

• High - can derive pleasure from life. Can have fun at work and play

• Low - may worry too much, lack drive or be dissatisfied with life

Life on Planet Earth seems to be distinctly concerned about the Global Warming mumbo-jumbo that's stealing the show from Copanhagen to Cochbehar. With this rapidly increasing perceived crisis of Efficient Energy Management and the predictions of consequences that follows; the developed and developing countries led already developed countries have managed to create enough awareness or I should rather say fear among the general as well as privileged population about our lovely planet's pathetic end. However according to the geologists, physicists and the bureaucrats this unfathomable melancholy can be contained or prolonged if men-of- the- lesser kind choose to cut down on their daily contribution to(to be read- emission of) carbondioxide. For the industries there has to exist a yearly disclosure of audit on carbon emissions, which industrialists has to provide through a person designated as Energy Manager or Auditor. And here comes the time reveal the boom of global warming. I guess this proves that great soul who once said that even the darkness has a brighter side. We can expect this to create a niche of a profession for Engineers as well as Graduates.

DOEACC Society Accreditation

Under the DOEACC Scheme, computer-training institutes in the non-formal sector, meeting well-defined criteria, are granted accreditation for specified levels of courses offered under it viz. O (Foundation) Level, A (Advanced Diploma) Level, B Level (Equivalent to MCA) and C Level (Equivalent to M.Tech). In this regard the Society publishes a prospectus for each of the level, which contains the eligibility norms and criteria in addition to an accreditation application form.

Cost of the Prospectus containing guidelines for accreditation for each of the four Levels, (O or A or B or C) is Rs. 500/-
The prospectus can be obtained from the Society's office:

The institutes desirous of getting Accreditation for any Level of Course under the DOEACC Scheme are required to purchase the relevant prospectus and submit the Application Form duly filled-in to the Society.

Computer-training institutes can also apply for accreditation to any of the DOEACC courses too. In this regard the Society publishes a prospectus for each of the level that contains the eligibility norms and criteria in addition to an accreditation application form.

Accreditation under DOEACC Society is awarded to a Private Institute, under the following guidelines:

a) Status and Identity

The institution/organization should be registered under any act of law e.g. in the case of a company, it must be registered with the Registrar of Companies, in case of a Society, it must be Registered with Registrar of Societies and so on an so forth. Must show financial stability and sincerity of the purpose. Should have conducted similar course for at least two years.

b) Infrastructure - Building and Space
Should have its own premises. However, in the event of the premises being hired, it should be on a long-term lease. The lease term, in such cases is specific to the Level for which accreditation is sought and the same is defined in the relevant prospectus. Minimum carpet area should be better than 90 sq. meters consisting of at least;
- one class room to seat 25 students
- one lab to seat 15 students.
- Library
- reception area, etc.

c) Infrastructure - Equipment
State-of-the-art Hardware should be available with the institute and the same should be provided to the students for the training of the relevant DOEACC course. The institute also needs to ensure that the students are allotted at least half of the duration of a subject for "hands-on" experience. The minimum number of computer system required should be commensurate with the number of students being trained by the institute and also the geographical location of the institute, subject to at least eight computer systems.
Not more than two students should work on a single terminal or one PC. All software should be licensed as understood within the terms of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Software required for the conduct of DOEACC Course(s) has been prescribed within the relevant syllabus. The institute should also possess modern teaching aids such as overhead projectors, video projection, audiovisuals etc.

d) Faculty
The teaching faculty should consist of at least three permanent incumbents who should have been with the institute for not less than six months. The ratio of full time to part time (normalized) should at least be 4:1, i.e., within the institute, for every four full time faculties, the institute is permitted to engage one part-time faculty. The ratio of full time + part time (normalized) to students should at least be 1:25, i.e., for every batch of 25 students, the institute should employ one faculty subject to a minimum of three permanent incumbents. Competent faculty should have the requisite qualifications and experience (a minimum of two years) as has been detailed in Prospectus of respective levels. The names and qualification including the experience of the faculties are required to be provided within the accreditation application form.

e) Library
The institute should maintain a Library.The Library should have a good selection of books and should also subscribe to popular periodicals. Sufficient number of books, which are listed in the DOEACC syllabus, should be also maintained in the Library. Sufficient number of DOEACC Syllabi and also other DOEACC publications should be maintained in the Library and the same should be made available to all concerned.

f) Code of Ethics
Institutes granted permission to conduct the DOEACC course(s) are required to follow the following code of ethics;
Should NOT knowingly, advertise in a way which is liable to project a false impression of competence of the Institution.
Should NOT advertise, either directly or by Implication, accreditation of aspects / course(s) for which specific approval has not been granted. This also covers the cases which are under consideration or expired or withdrawn;
Should NOT exaggerate, to gain unfair advantage, the contents of the course(s) for which accreditation has been granted;
Should NOT mention connection with foreign collaboration directly or indirectly to gain advantage, unless there is indisputable proof of such connection.
Should NOT guarantee benefits to student that is actually false or not feasible.
Should NOT project price terms that are false, or misleading, to gain advantage over competition.
Should NOT disparage competition, even obliquely.
Should NOT project insufficiently supported claims of excellence in connection with employment.
Should NOT distort statement of Government for own gain.
Should NOT criticize action of Government / professional bodies or experts, without proper investigation.
Should NOT make statement offensive to the public. This includes release of advertisements that are "Off-Color."
Should NOT make statements of an ambiguous nature presenting a false picture in any stage /part of the scheme of accreditation including hardware / software as also omissions and half-truth.
Should NOT do comparative advertising
Should NOT involve in any other matter / action repugnant to the spirit of ethical practices, including, behavior to / by our students; unauthorized use of copyrighted software etc.

g) Student Admission and Administration
At least 50% of the enrolment will be on the basis of merit.
Student administration should be of high order.
Separate record keeping of admission, registration, aptitude test, and-- selection norms.

h) Accreditation Fee (Provisional) for 3 years
'O' Level - Rs. 30,000/-
'A' Level - Rs. 30,000/-
'B' Level - Rs. 45,000/-
'C' Level - Rs. 30,000/-
* Accreditation Fee once paid is not refundable.

i) Points to consider after accreditation
Accreditation is for the DOEACC computer course and the institute is not accredited as such. It is applicable for the course at the specified location only.
Accreditation given in the name of an institute is not automatically applicable to its branches / centres / head office/franchises/licensees etc. Each centre is required to have independent accreditation for each level.
Provisional accreditation is granted for a period of three years for O/A/C levels and five years for B level.
Accreditation is a continuous process and new institutes get accredited from time to time. Accreditation granted to an existing institute may be withdrawn if its fails to adhere to the specified norms or for other specified reasons.
Observers who are experts in the field are requested to visit the concerned institutes and send their reports when complaints about the functioning of the institutes are to be investigated or deficiencies in their yearly reports are to be looked into.
The performance of an institute is reviewed through the yearly reports submitted by the institute, the Observer's report on the functioning of the institute and by the performance of candidates appearing in DOEACC examinations from the institute. This also includes the number of candidates sent by the institute for such examinations.
Institutes are allowed to run number of courses/batches in commensuration with the qualified faculty and existing infrastructure. Based on this, the maximum number of students which the institute can train for each level are decided.

DOEACC Society - A Freelance IT Career

DOEACC Society is an autonomous body of Dept.of IT, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Govt. of India. The Society is implementing a joint scheme of All India Council for Technical Education (A.I.C.T.E) and Department of Information Technology (formerly Department of Electronics (DOE)), Government of India. The objective of the Scheme is to develop quality manpower in IT by utilizing the expertise available with the computer training institutes who are granted accreditation for conducting specified Levels of courses, subject to their meeting well-defined norms and criteria.

1. An IT Literacy course namely, Course on Computer Concepts (CCC) is offered by the Society all over the country.

Sales in recessions

Sales figures are often used as evidence of the general health of the economy. In a recession, any rise in high street sales is quoted by government ministers as evidence of the increase in consumer confidence that is the first step on the road back to economic growth.

In free market terms, sale figures reflect the state of local market

forces at any one place and at any one time. They show the amount of a product that the public wants to buy at the current price.

To a large extent, this is true. At times of falling sales, high street

shops are forced to reduce prices - with out-of-season sales, special offers and even "closing down" sales. Newspapers are full of advertisements for special offers on consumer durables, cars, for example, or computers and video recorders.

The reason for these goods being the ones that are most frequently discounted in times of recession is that they are the most expensive in terms of their opportunity cost - their relative value to buyers compared to the

value of alternative goods and services on which they may want to spend that same amount of money. If you have £X, you can buy a CD player or go on a short holiday, but you cannot do both.

Even more important, perhaps, is the consumer's fear of his or her personal future. In recessions come job losses, with job losses comes an increased reluctance to spend; it is expensive luxuries such as videos that are

the first items to be cut from household budgets. People feel the need to save against the possible future loss of income. In recessions, a greater proportion of the public's income is saved than in times of economic growth. The effect of all this on manufacturers can easily be seen. Falling sales lead to production cut-backs. This results in the under-capacity of plant an machinery. Since fixed overheads remain basically the same, other ways of cutting back on costs and thus of reducing prices have to be found. Almost always, this is achieved through cutting back on jobs.

But therein lies the problem. Although, for a manufacturer, cutting back on the workforce is a relatively simple short-term solution, it is not necessarily the best long-term strategy. In certain key industries, skilled labour is hard to find - and keep. the job market can fluctuate as erratically as the consumer market. There are fashionable jobs and unfashionable jobs. There are glamorous jobs and jobs that nobody wants to do. These trends are reflected in the kind of further training chosen by school leavers and in the kinds of further education courses on offer.

Manufacturers, therefore, tend to wait longer before laying off any staff than they would do if they were obeying market forces. To keep these workers fully occupied, companies may have to depress prices artificially to a point lower than that demanded by prevailing market forces, merely in order to maintain production levels.

It is almost certainly true, therefore, that there are forces at work at the time that an economy is entering a recession that distort the real value of sales figures. It may also be true that, on the way out of a recession, or in a boom period, the competition for scarce labour has the same distorting effect.

The oldest medium for advertising is outdoor advertising, which can be on hoardings, underground stations etc. This form of is much cheaper than television advertising in terms of how many people it can for a certain price. Some owners have bought up some the specialist companies themselves. The market is now segmented. Active listening

Watching and listening play a big part in effective communication. The goal of active listening is to understand not just the words a person says but the meaning or point of view the person is trying to get across.

Timing and setting:

Some settings make communicating easier, just as certain times seem to be better than others. Be sensitive to potential problems and eliminate distractions by choosing the right time & place. For instance when calling on someone important over the mobile we must reconsider the time of the day, and also instinctively go to a corner which is less noisy and has good network coverage

Effective self-expression:

Be sensitive to your own style of communicating. Take note of how you say things. Are you saying what you really mean? Are you saying it clearly and simply?

Do you give other messages with your tone of voice, your facial expression or your body as you talk and listen?

Pleasing & not a Gullible Disposure:

A smile can set the tone and mood anywhere, but only when it’s not faked. An earnest person seeks the truth, but a rogue curtains it.

Confident and not Arrogant:

Your tone must have the harmony and blend of confidence, tenacity and gentleness. A confident attitude is most anticipated when it isn’t followed by obstinacy. We can inculcate this demeanor only if we harbor openness to learning as well as unlearning.

Improving Listening Skills

• Stop talking. You can't listen if you are doing all the talking.

• Be patient while explaining. You can’t expect everyone to be intelligent as you, to quickly understand a complex thought or idea, it may take longer for a person (with a poor IQ like me) to understand or respond. Two or three minutes may be needed before the person can even begin to answer your question. Keep in mind that you can repeat the question or idea after waiting a few minutes for a response.

• Keep things simple. Use short sentences and plain words. Avoid complicated questions or directions. Follow the KISS rule- KEEP IT SHORT & SIMPLE

• Do not interrupt. The person may need extra time to express what he or she wishes to say.

• Show interest. Let the person know that you care what he or she is trying to say.

• Maintain eye contact, and try not to stand or sit very close. Maintaining a distance of not more than 2-3 feet will help you to focus and also observe the non-verbal vibes. Moreover coming at an uncomfortably close proximity with someone with whom you’re least emotionally attached can percolate undesirable feelings and prejudices about you. After all everyone seeks some personal space.

• Be gentle and make allowances for poor behavior. Try to be calm and to use tact, when dealing with a vexed client or customer. Remember- a consensus is far more fruitful than a conflict. Try to respond to any negative statements with understanding comments until the angry outburst ends. A person in rage ought to calm down; it’s only a matter of time. So, let him vent.

• Double-check understanding. Avoid assuming things. The person may even say he or she understands what you have said but still not understand at all. The best way to check understanding is to paraphrase and rephrase

Improving the setting and timing

• Make sure the person can see you well. Sit or stand directly in front of the person.

• Avoid distractions. Communication will be hard, if not impossible, under these circumstances- your mobile goes off on the loud mode, the background is noisy (loud street noise, for instance, or the sound of the television or even loud music)

• When other things or people can attract the person's attention (at shopping centers or restaurants, for example).

• Set aside a quiet place. You may even want to set aside a certain area at your home or office just for communicating. This could be a separate room or perhaps just a corner.

Improving self-expression

• Think ahead about what you will say. Know what information you want to tell or find out, and break this information down into individual parts. Give just one direction or piece of information at a time. Ask just one question at a time. Try to think of brief, easy-to-understand words and sentences to explain what you mean, but speak in a gently professional tone.

• Anticipate problems. Be prepared, for example, to repeat yourself as many times necessary without losing your temper.

• Make eye contact before speaking. Sometimes a gentle touch, if appropriate, can be a way of making sure you have the person's attention before you begin speaking.

• Listen to how you sound. Is your voice louder than usual? If so, you may sound angry or upset. Try to speak in a clear, pleasant voice. Speaking slowly and clearly will help.

Verbs can broadly be catagorised into two groups, viz. Transitive(Tr.) & Intransitive(Int.).
When the action performed by the verb is passed over from the Subject of the sentence to the Object we get a transitionally used verb.
For example, in the sentence- "Rama with his army defeated Ravana" the verb- defeat is being transited from the subject- Rama, to the object, i.e Ravana.
And in the example,- "The child cried." - the verb- cry isn't passed over from the subject- child to no object whatsoever.

What's up with ‘UP’!

There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is “up.”

It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It’s easy to understand ‘up', meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake ‘up'?

At a meeting, why does a topic come up? Why do we speak up, and why are the officers up for election, and why is it up to the secretary to write up a report?

We call up our friends and we use up the opportunity to brighten up our home, after the party is up we warm up the leftovers and clean up the kitchen. We were once locked up in the house, it was Pooja who had messed up and forgotten the keys at her’s cousin’s place uptown. Some guy who’d come to fix up the old car, rescued us from the holdup.

At other times the little word has a real special meaning. People stir up trouble, line up for tickets, work up an appetite, think up excuses, make up for a loss, ….

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed up is special.

And this up is confusing:

A drain must be opened up because it is stopped up.

We open up a store in the morning but we close it up at night. We seem to be pretty mixed up about up!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of 'up' look the word up in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes up almost 1/4 of the page and can add up to about thirty definitions.

If you are up to it, you might try building up a list of the many ways up is used. It will take up a lot of your time, but if you don’t give up, you may wind up with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding up. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing up. When it rains, it wets up the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry up.

One could go on & on, but I’ll wrap it up, for now …my time is up, so time to shut UP!
