Congress today decriedNarendraModi for attacking Prime MinisterManmohan Singh, saying Independence Day is not an occasion for "partisan debates and power hungry squabbles" and political parties should not look for self-seeking opportunities.

"Independence Day is a national festival, a sacred template that stands high in the collective conscience of the nation. The Prime Minister's speech on the occasion is a non-partisan national statement of intent and purpose," AICC General Secretary and in-charge of party's communication department Ajay Maken

"I appeal to the members of fellow political parties that they unitedly hold the sanctity of the day so that the generations to come continue seeing August 15 as the template of freedom and unity rather than an opportunity for self-seeking," he said.

Earlier, Congress leaders hit out at Modi for attacking Singh, saying he was indulging in "petty politics" and rejected as "tall talk" his challenge to the PM for a public debate.

"Prime Minister will come last. Let him debate with us first," Union Minister Salman Khurshid said here when asked about the Gujarat Chief Minister's challenge to the PM.

He said Modi is "so restless to become something big in the country" that he forgets that this is a day when political differences are forgotten.

To a question about Modi comparing his speech with that of the Prime Minister, Khurshid said it was a case of "tall talk by a person with small stature (Chhota munh badi baat)".

"Petty politics must not be allowed...," he said to a question at to whether politics is taking over Indo-Pak relationship.

Modi, in his Independence Day speech in Bhuj, slammed the Prime Minister for India's "weak and feeble" response to provocations from Pakistan and China.

Australia cricketer Lee to miss rest of ODI series

Cricket Australia said Lee, 35, suffered the fracture after he was struck by a ball in his last over against India in Friday's Twenty20 international at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Team doctor Trefor James said Lee, who has made 205 ODI appearances, will be out of cricket for up to six weeks.
"Brett Lee sustained a fracture of his right foot when he was struck by a ball in his last over of the T20 match on Friday," James said in a statement.
"He was able to complete the over however the foot became more painful and swollen the following day.
"An X-ray has confirmed a fracture of the small toe and we now expect Brett will return to cricket in four-six weeks."
CA said a decision regarding a replacement player for Lee would be made after Sunday's opening ODI against India at the MCG.

Will Facebook Deliver an IPO Surprise?

By punemsexesena -Facebook, the social network that changed "friend" from a noun to a verb, is expected to file as early as Wednesday to sell stock on the open market. Its debut is likely to be the most talked-about initial public offering since Google in 2004.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company expects to raise as much as $10 billion, though some accounts say it could be less than that. At $10 billion, the company would be valued at $75 billion to $100 billion.

The highly anticipated documents Facebook files with the Securities and Exchange Commission will reveal how much it intends to raise from the stock market, what it plans to do with the money and details on the company's financial performance and future growth prospects.

A stock usually starts trading three to four months after the filing.

Around the nation, regular investors and IPO watchers are anticipating some kind of twist — perhaps a provision for the 800 million users of Facebook, a company that promotes itself as all about personal connections, to get in on the action.

After all, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is anything but a conformist. He turns up at business conventions in a hoodie. "Cocky" is the word used to describe him most often, after "billionaire." He was Time's person of the year at 26. So when he takes Facebook public, why would he follow the Wall Street rules?

"Pandemonium is what I expect in terms of demand for this stock," says Scott Sweet, senior managing partner at IPO Boutique, an advisory firm. "I don't think Wall Street would want to anger Facebook users."

The most successful young technology companies have a history of doing things differently. Google's IPO prospectus contained a letter from its founders to investors that said the company believed in the motto "Don't be evil."

Facebook declined to comment, but Reena Aggarwal, a finance professor who has studied IPOs at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, believes Zuckerberg will emulate Google's philosophy, at least in principle.

Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted an IPO accessible to all investors, and said so in their first regulatory filing. Facebook may say something similar when it files to declare its intention to sell stock publicly.

Along with Wall Street investment banks, Google used a Dutch auction, named for a means of selling flowers in Holland, to sell its shares. It took private bids and allowed investors to say how many shares they wanted and what they were willing to pay.

The process wasn't smooth, though, and Google had to slash its expected offer price at the last minute. If you bought at the IPO, for roughly $85 a share, you still did well: Google closed Tuesday at $580.

More recently, when it filed for an IPO last June, Groupon, which emails daily deals on products and services to its members, added a letter from its 30-year-old founder, Andrew Mason.

"We are unusual and we like it that way," the letter said. "We want the time people spend with Groupon to be memorable. Life is too short to be a boring company."

It's almost become conventional for tech companies to include an unconventional letter when they make their stock market debut. It's widely expected that Zuckerberg, in the very least measure of showmanship, will write one.(Ap)

Veena Malik's ‘nude picture' evokes mixed reaction

By punemsexesena : Humour and anger were available in fair measure across Pakistan as reports reached here about actor Veena Malik reportedly posing nude for the cover of an Indian magazine.

Though the cover has been the buzz on social networking sites since Friday afternoon, the local media was slow to pick up the story and even then the ‘ghairat brigade' (honour brigade) was not out in strength with daggers drawn.

Given that her previous appearance on Indian television's Big Boss season had got her into trouble back home, many found it difficult to believe the cover picture was real. It must have been morphed seemed to be the general belief and so when her public relations manager claimed that the photographs were not hers, many bought that version. In fact, the dominant sentiment was that if the photograph was hers, then Ms. Malik probably had no intention of returning to Pakistan, knowing full well that there would be a lynch mob waiting for her. Worse still, was the fact that the bare-all photograph has ISI tattooed on her arm.

In an interview to Geo News, Ms. Malik said she had done a bold shoot for FHM magazine but it was not a nude shoot. As for the ISI tattoo on her arm, she said it was the magazine editor's idea to take a dig at the general Indian tendency to blame everything that goes wrong in India on the ISI. Maintaining that she would take recourse to legal action as her photographs had been doctored, Ms. Malik said she was well aware of her limitations and had never in her life done a nude shoot. Meanwhile, the magazine's website on Saturday changed the cover of the December edition though it still featured her in a different pose. This time, the “Pakistani WMD'' — as the magazine chose to call her — is caught in the act of pulling the pin out of a grenade.

And, once again Twitter was abuzz with some among Pakistan's tweeting community expressing disgust, the liberal lot saluting her for the courage in doing what she wanted, and others making light of it with sarcasm. Commenting on the latest FHM cover, one tweeter said “Veena Malik would make a terrible ISI agent considering how much she reveals” while another wondered if cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf would invite her to the party fold now that she had revealed all her assets.

By punemsexesena: An FIR has been registered against the Shiromani Akaali Dal sarpanch who slapped a woman teacher, who was demanding a permanent job, at a function in Muktsar district in Punjab.
The lady Varinder Kaur was part of a delegation of teachers who wanted to meet Bhatinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the wife of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal at the function on MOnday.
A scuffle broke out between the teachers' delegation, which wanted to submit a memorandum to MP Harsimrat Kaur demanding regularization of their job, and Akali Dal workers who wanted the delegation to leave the place.

Balwinder Singh, Akali Dal sarpanch of Daula village, caught hold of Varinder Kaur and slapped her many times, Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) Teachers Association President Pritpal Singh said.
"Balwinder Singh manhandled me and beat me up," Kaur said and added EGS Jalandhar unit chief Jarnail Singh was also
slapped and picked up by police.
The police also locked up the teachers in a house to ensure a smooth conduct of the function", the sources said, adding the teachers have lodged a complaint against Balwinder demanding his arrest.
Police said a case has been registered against members of both the parties.
The incident drew condemnation from across the political spetrum in and the state government ordered lodging of an FIR against the sarpanch.

Fielding was a team decision: Wadekar

By punemsexesena: Former Team India manager Ajit Wadekar has categorically refuted former cricketer Vinod Kambli’s startling contention that the 1996 Team India semifinal may have been fixed.
Kambli had alleged that in the 1996 semifinal Ajit Wadekar was a witness to the team’s decision that India would bat in the event of winning the toss. However, the opposite happened when the match finally took place.

Wadekar termed Kambli’s accusation as incorrect and said the team had decided to field first. When STAR News asked him for his version, Wadekar said, “In the team meeting before the match it was decided that India would field in the event of winning the toss. The decision was taken after consultation with the entire team.”

According to Wadekar, “The entire team felt that the Sri Lankan players are good chasers. Hence, the team felt that if India fielded first, the Lankans could be easily defeated. Wadekar added that even though he and Sandeep Patil were of the opinion that the wicket would turn, still the team decided to field keeping in mind the chasing prowess of the Sri Lankans.

When asked why the batting order collapsed like a pack of cards, Wadekar said the team lost the match due to nervousness. According to him, overconfidence, after defeating the Pakistan team proved to be our undoing. Moreover, the moment Tendulkar got out, the other players panicked. Wadekar was stunned when he heard Kambli’s claim that the team had decided to bat first. He said, “This is incorrect. The decision to field was taken in the meeting itself. Kambli was quite close to me and if had any doubt about the decision to field, he should have consulted me.”

He added that the Sri Lankan team had exhibited good form during the World Cup and had defeated all good teams including India and Australia. Moreover, he said that it was wrong for Kambli to say that he had been made a scapegoat after the team’s defeat because no-one ever said that India had lost the semifinal because of him.

Mamata serves ultimatum on UPA Govt

Trinamool Congress will not remain in the UPA government if the Centre resorts to another increase in prices of diesel, kerosene and LPG,” Ms. Banerjee told a news channel after a meeting with Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee at the Raj Bhavan here.

Her ultimatum followed the threat to pull out of the government on November 4 over the hike in petrol price.

She said her party would not remain in the UPA government if it was not needed.

Asked whether she had any hint that the Congress was trying to rope in some other allies as an alternative to her party to ensure the survival of the government, she said, “they (Congress) are always in the habit of doing this.

If there is a tiff with Lalu (Prasad) they woo Nitish (Kumar). If they have trouble with Mayawati, they woo Mulayam.

They can do what they like, but ultimately they will have to go for elections.”

Ms. Banerjee said as long as “we are in the government we will maintain courtesy. If they think they have got another ally and they don’t need us, let them tell us. We will come out.

Windows 8: Is Microsoft Scared Into Acting Like a Startup?

After BYTE's first day at Microsoft's BUILD 2011 developer’s conference, we say no. On news analysis, this clearly is a long term play for a whole new generation of devices and the fight of Microsoft’s life.

Execs at MS BUILD 2011 revealed so much to the developers and even journalists present. That is not the Microsoft we know, with its NDAs and top secret plans. As for the keynote, it is an opus. Analysts told me they are having to watch the epic length two hour plus keynote over and over just to get their heads around it.

Execs didn't even mention a release date or time frame or discuss how many iterations it would arrive in for enterprise, home and so on. With stakes this high, Microsoft can't again risk the humiliation it suffered when its Longhorn (aka the clunker Vista) took years to hit the market. It needs to act lean and move quickly again. And by all indications at BUILD, that’s the makeover Microsoft is trying for.

Business folks know that totally redesigned products are risky on first release. Microsoft's own record shows it often takes it three revs to get something right. So now Microsoft is making its revs in public and starting early with a pre-Beta product.

Other signs point to a corporate reinvention. Microsoft risks irrelevance in the rapid-fire tablet market dominated by rival Google. To immediately release an alpha level product to developers and not bar others is new behavior.

This is a startup mentality Microsoft hasn't exhibited in decades. And growing competition for marketshare, developers and talent seems to be scaring Microsoft into regaining that mentality.

At BUILD, execs emphasized long-term thinking without cease. Within a couple years, they said, all displays (regular computer monitors and tablets alike) will be touch-enabled.

From watching the execs and the fervor with which they preached the Windows 8 gospel, it is clear there is a lot on the line here. Microsoft can't miss the next revolution and remain king.

Execs talked and talked about tablets all day during BUILD day one. It was all tablets all the time. They talked a lot about the new tablet-ready features to support Metro apps. One exec said the new Visual Studio features were designed with Metro in mind.

Microsoft trotted out old ARM mobile devices to show that Win8 is rapid when coupled with display hardware that Windows 8 will enhance and support. That's a sign graphics acceleration is in the works, and Microsoft even repeated the term "proprietary display hardware" the way radio stations once overplayed Hotel California. Or Freebird. Continually.

Microsoft can’t risk low performance. It might have one shot here -- not the three, per usual.

Moving people from today's Windows 7 apps (and they run natively on Windows 8, according to Microsoft) to Metro interface apps isn't going to be easy. Microsoft usually takes the easy route. Typically, Microsoft just watched the competition make mistakes and then buys or builds its way into a fairly mature market. It can't do that and win this war.

One more thing, execs repeated the word Metro as if it's a common word everyone knows. But it didn't seem to have a consistent word for traditional Windows apps. But it didn’t have a term for its traditional Windows apps.

Though Microsoft is still Microsoft for sure -- it used Google Chrome as a running joke at BUILD and always pejoratively – it won’t be able to make fun of competitors' current Windows apps via name-calling until it replaces its popular Windows apps with Metro versions.

Microsoft plus Samsung or other tablets would be viable not just to tech pros - but to consumers who've only heard of Microsoft and never the words Android or iOS. Name recognition will get it loyalty from business users and the great unwashed alike -- and the ultimate win for a company who wants to keep its mantra of "Windows everywhere."

It's been years since Microsoft -- grown so confident and corporate and slow-- could act anything like a startup. But it is. It no longer can slow the industry it "owns" to whatever pace it's comfortable with, that's for sure.

INTELLIGENCE SHARED WITH POLICE IN JULY: CHIDAMBARAM

By punemsexesena : Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday said intelligence about threats were shared with Delhi Police in July but contended that it would not be possible at this stage to identify the group that caused the bomb blast at the Delhi High Court.

Making a statement in the Lok Sabha on the blast, he regretted that the “tragic incident” had taken place despite Delhi Police being on high alert and capacity being built to strengthen the force in the last few years.

Informing members that the case would be handed over to the National Investigative Agency (NIA), Mr Chidambaram said government would not be intimidated by terrorist groups and was “determined to track down the perpetrators of this horrific crime and bring them to justice.”

He noted that Delhi was a target of terrorist groups and when Parliament was in session and during certain other times of the year, the capital is placed on high alert.

“Intelligence agencies constantly share intelligence inputs with Delhi Police. Intelligence pertaining to threats emanating from certain groups was shared with Delhi Police in July, 2011,” the Home Minister said.

“At this stage, it is not possible to identify the group that caused the bomb blast today,” he said about the terror strike which was the second incident at the High Court in over three months.

Chivalry: A Thing of the Past?

A research article (in ‘Psychology of Women’) termed chivalry to be “benevolent sexism”. It says, “Benevolent sexism is using ‘he’ to refer to an unknown person, helping a woman carry her shopping bags, or choosing to drive on long-distance journeys. It implies a woman cannot do these things without a man’s help”. I do know women who find it condescending; they’re independent, can ‘afford’ their bill & are capable of doing stuff on their own. The article calls it paternalistic treatment, ‘a woman being cherished or protected by men’.

I am one woman who likes being protected & cherished by a man. There. I said it.

I've had men who opened doors for me, or waited for me to enter the lift, or let me go ahead first into a room, or pulled the chair, or paid the bill on our first meeting. I’m not offended when a man offers to carry a heavy shopping bag or stands like a china wall between me & an unruly crowd in a bus or a cinema hall. I’ve come out feeling good about the experience & nice about him. I’m a lady & would like to be treated like one. And if a man is man enough to do that, I’m impressed. For all my “modern” ideas, I love feeling special & when a man does that, muah to him.

I remember once, Sathya, his friends, & I, had gone to this waterfalls place. And me being me, when I see a rock, I want to climb. It’s like a dog wanting to piss whenever it sees a pole! I set off; excited, & started climbing a rock. I must’ve slipped a bit because I saw his hands stretching out to me. I reacted saying, “HOGO (Go ya) I know what I’m doing.” He & his friends were amused; their instinctive reaction is to help a girl in a situation like this. He backed off & waited for me to join him at the top. And I did; on my own. At times like these, I don’t need a man to do the “helping a damsel in distress” drill. It’s simply not required. It wasn’t a social situation but an adventurous one. Formal situations are different. In a social set-up, if a man offers to get me a drink or a plate or a napkin or a chair, I find it endearing.

I don’t necessarily expect a man to do all this. But if he does, & not just for me; but for any woman, young or old, irrespective of his romantic inclinations, I’d be pleased by the gesture. I appreciate men who do it naturally, without trying to make an impression. I don’t know why feminists cry foul over this; after all, there are greater issues to fight for. This is not one of them. I don’t think a man who pays the bill thinks you’re a beggar & can’t afford your food. Similarly, holding the door open for someone coming in after you is courtesy. And if a man sees me home at night it’s because he wants to ensure I reach safely. That’s no reason for a war of the genders.

I dislike women who try to impress an unsuspecting guy with their daintiness & trick him into being extra nice; the ones who pretend to be delicate darlings; those who walk all fragile & fairy-like when draped in a sari & expect a man to hold their pallu or purse or mobile or head; or those who drink water like its ‘amrith’, one drop at a time; or those who eat meat like this is their 1st time (back home they’d devour an entire animal with just 1 hand) or……you get the picture right? Pls don’t try to be like a lady; if you are not, to hell with it. Jut be yourself, be whatever or whoever you’re – Tomb Raider, Cat woman, Kill Bill – but don’t fake being feminine just to extract chivalry from a gentleman & be treated like a VVIP at his expense.

Chivalry is simple courtesy. And it’d work both ways: if a man holds the door open for you, say a ‘thank you’ in return. Chivalry & good manners should be in BOTH the genders. Wish the concept was not limited to the things men do for women but extended to include things that people do for ‘othe

Remove Gujarat governor, demands BJP

Advani, Haren Pathak and around 15 other BJP MPs from Gujarat protested at the Gandhi statue in Parliament complex against the appointment of RA Mehta as the lokayukta by governor Kamla Beniwal.

"We are going to meet the President on September 1 or 2 when she returns to the capital. All norms were ignored by the governor like consultation with the chief minister before the appointment or taking the advice of his Cabinet on the issue. The lokayukta was appointed by the governor bypassing all established norms," Advani told reporters.

The MPs shouted slogans against the governor demanding her recall. Some of them held placards saying, "Dual policy on Gujarat will not be tolerated", "Recall Gujarat governor", "murder of democracy" and "Rajyapal Bhawan has become Congress Bhawan (governor's House has become Congress Bhawan).

Asked if the BJP would demand Beniwal's removal as governor, Advani said, "Yes. We are going to meet the President over this."

In reply to another question, the senior BJP leader said, "It is a very serious matter and we condemn it. It is an attack on the federal structure of the country. It has never happened before."

Earlier, BJP gave notices in both Houses of Parliament for suspension of Question Hour to discuss the issue which it claims is violation of Article 163 of the Constitution that states the governor should act according to the advice of the council of ministers.

For instance, your site may have a search box where people type in search queries, a comment form (commonly found in blogs) while some sites have a contact form that visitors can use to quickly send a message to the author /webmaster.

The visitors to your website currently need to use the keyboard to enter text in the various input fields but wouldn’t it be nice if you could also offer them an alternate form of input where they can just speak instead of typing?

Well all you need to do is add an extra word – highlighted in red - to your existing search code and your site will able to accept voice based input.

Anna Hazare and some of his close associates were arrested earlier in the day after they made it clear they would defy all prohibitory orders and carry on an indefinite fast demanding a strong Lokpal Bill.

The 73-year-old Gandhian was picked up at 7.30 am from a flat where he was staying in Mayur Vihar in East Delhi after he refused to be persuaded by Delhi Police officials against the fast, in violation of prohibitory orders that were imposed last night.

Anna Hazare had even refused food in Tihar, indicating he would carry on his fast in jail.

Hazare and his aides including, Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal, were first taken to the Delhi Police Officers' Mess in North Delhi and were shifted to another after Hazare's supporters gathered in large numbers at Civil Lines.

Nearly 1,400 activists were detained in various parts of the city when they came out in support of Hazare, who had planned to launch the fast at Jai Prakash Narain Park near Ferozeshah Kotla.

The social activist, who is campaigning for a legislation that will cover the Prime Minister, higher judiciary and MPs' conduct within Parliament among other things, was later taken to Rajouri Garden police station in West Delhi where a Special Executive Magistrate remanded him to 7 days judicial custody.

Two train accidents kill 35, injure over 250+!

By punemsexesena : New Delhi: At least 35 people were killed and over 200 injured on Sunday when over dozen coaches of two superfast Express trains got derailed in Uttar Pradesh and Assam, raising concerns once again about the patchy safety record of Indian Railways.
Thirty-five have been confirmed dead and over 140 injured as the Howrah-Delhi-Kalka Express got derailed near Fatehpur Malwa in Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place around 12:30 pm. Approximately 1200 people were travelling on board Kalka Mail.
The train was travelling from Howrah to New Delhi and was moving at the speed of 108 Km/Hr when the driver used emergency brakes to slow it down, which led to the derailment, sources claimed.

The accident occurred when the driver of the train applied emergency brakes, said AK Jain, additional director general of the railway police.
Jain said he feared the death toll would go up, as injured passengers were being admitted in nearby hospitals.
Meanwhile, some coaches of the Guwahati-Puri Express got derailed at Nalbari district in western Assam Sunday, officials said, adding that casualties were feared. Nearly 50 people were injured in the incident.
The accident occurred near Ghograpara at around 8:30 pm as the train was on its way to Puri. Police and railway teams were rushing to the spot.
An IED blast on the railway track caused the derailment of the train.
In Uttar Pradesh, local sources confirmed that gas cutters arrived at the accident spot and that the mangled bogies were being cut open to take out the injured.
Seven bogies were badly mangled while three more bogies have capsized. The badly damaged bogies are - three AC 3 tier cars, one pantry car, five sleeper cars and two general cars.
The train driver is said to be among the injured. Reports also claim that the count of injured will rise as some bogies have not yet been cut open for the rescue efforts.
The Ministry of Railways has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those dead, Rs 1 lakh for those critically injured and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condoled the death of the victims.
The train was passing through Malwa station when its engine and 12 bogies got derailed, sources said. The injured have been taken to the Fatehpur District Hospital.
Sources say that three rescue trains including one from Allahabad and Kanpur have rushed to the spot. One relief train reached the spot. The National Disaster Relief Force said it was sending three teams from Delhi, even as the Army was being called in for medical support.
Mukul Goel, IG National Disaster Relief Force, said, Three teams of total 100 people are going to the accident spot. These teams are specialised in collapse structure rescue. We are waiting for the Indian Air Force plane."
The Commissioner of Railways Safety PK Vajpayee will conduct an enquiry into the derailment of the train.
The busy Delhi-Howrah route has been hit and many trains on the route have been cancelled or diverted. Twelve trains were cancelled and 23 trains were diverted.
On July 7, at least 31 people were killed when a train rammed into a bus driving over a level crossing which did not have a gate or an attendant, typical of several such crossings in India.
Latest government data showed that 336 people were killed and 437 injured between April 2010 and mid-January 2011.

Google doubling Google+ population

Google briefly let Google+ users invite new members last night in a plan to double the social network's population. And Google has begun detailing its plans for letting business users, not just individuals, use the service starting later this year.

Google has been limiting the individual sign-up rate, leading to frustration among many who want to get in. But Dave Besbris, the Google+ engineering director, said last night it was time for another growth spurt.

"Things are going well with the systems right now so we feel comfortable enough to open up invites for a brief period. Our goal is to double the user base in the field trial from its initial group," he said in a Google+ post.

Apparently the moment was indeed fleeting, because I couldn't find an invitation mechanism by the time I woke up here in England. That means Lutz Beyer's amusing cartoon about Google+ exclusivity remains relevant.

Google had opened invitations briefly last week, shortly after the mostly-closed beta test began. I've had success getting quite a few people in by a somewhat circuitous Google+ invitation route that involves sharing a Google+ post by e-mail with their Gmail addresses.

It's been an irregular process: some people told me they never got an invitation, and sometimes the message took days to arrive. And because Google throttles the sign-up rate, many of those I've invited had to check back several times before they happened to click when the window was open.

In a comment, Besbris apologized for the sporadic availability.

We are also ensuring, as we grow, things keep working well, so occasionally we may have to pause/slow down/speed up the signup rate to keep the service smooth and fast. The combo can make it seem unpredictable," he said. "I'm sorry [about] that and thanks for your patience.

An official invitation clearly would be a far better way to handle this than the e-mail technique. Google, though, is proceeding cautiously.

I wanted to take a moment to explain why we're growing the system slowly," Besbris said. "First, we want to make sure our infrastructure scales so the service remains fast and reliable. Second, we want to ensure that bugs are fixed while there are still a relatively few people in the field trial.

Google has made a couple tweaks--shutting down the ability to publicly share an initially private post last week, for one thing. Another change came yesterday involving profile pictures. "Changing your public profile picture or scrapbook photos will no longer generate a public post to the stream, just to the people you have in your circles. So only people in your circles will engage in discussions about the photos you post," Google+ product manager Shimrit Ben-Yair said in a Google+ post.

1.7 million Google+ users so far?
Besbris wouldn't say how many people are using Google+ right now, but it's certainly in the thousands at least. Paul Allen, founder of Ancestry.com and president of FamilyLink.com, estimated that there were 1.7 million people on Google+ on Monday, a figure based on a statistical extrapolation from the frequency of surnames. "My model uses surname distribution data from the U.S. Census Bureau and compares it to how many Google+ users there currently are with a small sampling of surnames in the U.S. and in the world," he said of his method.

Google+ is a sprawling product, too, and it's taken time for people to grasp its many mechanisms for organizing contacts, sharing posts publicly or selectively, and figuring out details such as, say, the difference between the default stream of contacts' posts (which shows posts from people in all your circles) and the "incoming" stream (which shows posts from people who put you in one of their circles). And Google+ can be used either through a sophisticated Web app or a full-featured Android app; an iOS app for Google+ has been submitted for approval.

No wonder then that newbie guides are popping up. My favorite compendium so far is one from Andrew Shotland. I also liked this flowchart showing how comments are shared with others on Google+.

Google+'s tentacles extend well beyond Google+ itself. Google Docs notifies you of updates. E-mail invitations arrive frequently with word of new followers and discussion replies. The Google home page features a link to your Google+ page. People's Google Profile pages now anchor their Google+ identities--and in a sign that Google is serious about this social networking thing, Google will delete any profiles that aren't made public by July 31. (Here's an idea: why doesn't Google send anybody in that situation an automatic Google+ invitation to try to win them over?)

It's not clear when Google will open up the invitations again, though clearly it will. When it does, Besbris advises you proceed cautiously, too.

"We continue to throttle invites, so please don't mass invite folks as it won't work," he said. "If you invite a handful of your most important friends and family you're much more likely to get these folks into our system."

Business demand, too
Google also is wrestling with business demand for Google+--something to match Facebook pages that need not be tied to a single individual.

Business accounts will be coming later this year, Google product manager Christian Oestlian said yesterday in a Google+ post. He also noted that Google will shut down existing non-individual accounts--well, most of them at least.

"Right now we're very much focused on optimizing for the consumer experience, but we have a great team of engineers building a similarly optimized business experience for Google+. We're very excited about it and we hope to roll it out later on this year," Oestlian said in a video about the option.

Several corporations have already jumped onto Google+, but it's not "optimally suited" for them, Oestlian said, and Google is shutting them down even as it plans to test what it hopes to actually launch:

The business experience we are creating should far exceed the consumer profile in terms of its usefulness to businesses. We just ask for your patience while we build it. In the meantime, we are discouraging businesses from using regular profiles to connect with Google+ users. Our policy team will actively work with profile owners to shut down non-user profiles.

Over the next few months we are going to be running a small experiment with a few marketing partners to see the effect of including brands in the Google+ experience. We'll begin this pilot with a small number of named partners.

Given that companies had already jumped aboard, it appears that at least some businesses would prefer a suboptimal experience to none at all. A measured debut is a sensible way of heading off problems before they're big, but Google also would do well to tap into the Google+ enthusiasm while it's still strong.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 30 (Reuters) - Google Inc (GOOG.O) stopped inviting users to join its new social network less than 48 hours after beginning a limited rollout of the service.

Google Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra said the company had shut down invite mechanism" for the Google+ service for the night, in a note he posted on Google+ on Wednesday evening.

Google unveiled Google+ on Tuesday, marking the company's boldest move to take on Facebook, the world's No.1 social networking company. The new Google+ service follows a string of failed attempts by Google to crack the social networking market with products such as Google Buzz and Wave.

A Google spokeswoman declined to say whether Google had resumed inviting people to join Google+ on Thursday or to specify what caused the suspension of invitations.

We launched Google+ in a Field Trial in order to test the product out and gather more feedback, Google said in an emailed statement.

Chhota Rajan ordered Dey’s killing

By punemsexesena : A fortnight after senior crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey was shot dead, Mumbai police on Monday cracked the case claiming that underworld don Chhota Rajan was behind the murder, even as they remained tight-lipped about the motive.

The murder was planned by Rohit Thangappan alias Satish Kalya at the behest of Chhota Rajan. Kalya is a known shooter of Rajan gang and has worked for him earlier too, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy told reporters.

While three persons were arrested from Mumbai, three were arrested from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and one from Solapur, he said.

According to police, Kalya had received a call from Chhota Rajan around 20 days before June 11, the day when Dey was shot dead.

Rajan told Kalya he needs him to do a job and that money and weapons would be provided. Kalya then collected Rs. two lakh from Chembur and the murder weapon along with 25 rounds of cartridges from Nainital, Mr. Roy said.

Police, however, did not disclose the motive behind the murder.

The police have recovered the murder weapon. All the seven arrested in the case were produced before a local court which remanded them to police custody till July 4.

Mr. Roy further said that Rajan had kept the identity of the target a secret but had given description of the victim and his bike number a week before the killing.

Rajan had told Kalya, the target would be found either in Arel (where Mid Day office is located) or in Pia, where Dey stays. On June 9 and 10, Kaila along with his associate Anil Waghmode had formed a team of seven persons, tried to spot Dey in Powai area but failed. On June 11, they spotted him and Kalya, who was riding pillion, fired five rounds at Dey,” Mr. Roy said.

After the murder, all the seven accused as per their plan went to Jogeshwari where they saw the news about the incident on television.

Only after seeing news channels, the shooters came to know about the identity of the person they had shot at. When they realised that they had killed a journalist, Kalya called up Rajan who assured them to stay calm. Rajan then asked them to collect Rs three lakh more and go out of Mumbai, Mr. Roy said.

After that the seven accused travelled around various places like Gujarat, Shirdi, Karnataka, Bijapur, Sangli, Solapur, Bangalore, Madurai and Rameswaram.

Crime Branch sleuths first picked up Kalya from Rameswaram. Based on his interrogation, the other accused were picked up, the Joint Commissioner said.

Expressing grief over the death of the senior journalist, Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik said, “The next step would be to prepare a water tight case for the trial. We assure everyone the case would be brought to its logical end.

Home Minister RR Patil said that the police worked very hard to crack the case since Dey was gunned down June 11.

The police spared no efforts in tracking down Dey's killers and have done a highly commendable job, Patil told mediapersons at his office Monday afternoon.

Paying rich compliments to the police, Patil said the home department would give a cash award of Rs 1 million to the Crime Branch team which managed to solve the murder case.

After encountering several blanks in the past 17 days, the Mumbai police finally succeeded on Sunday night in solving Dey's killing by nabbing seven persons in connection with the murder.

Police have said that they belong to the Chhota Rajan gang, which is believed to have masterminded the killing.

However, the motive behind the killing still eludes the investigators, police said.

Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal also paid him a visit in the hospital today.

Badal extended his support to Ramdev and said he is with the yoga guru in his fight.

Baba Ramdev, who is being treated by doctors at the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Jolly Grant, is likely to be shifted out of the special ICU to a private ward later in the day.

Doctors have said that he shall remain in hospital for some more days till his health stabilizes further. At the time of the filing of this report, his blood pressure was said to be close to normal.

Govt. against bringing Prime Minister under Lokpal

By punem sexesena : Civil society members were unhappy with government insisting on "self regulation" to control corruption in higher judiciary and MPs inside parliament instead of bringing them under Lokpal.

Sharp differences came to the surface at a meeting of the drafting committee for Lokpal bill on Monday with the government strongly opposing proposals for inclusion of Prime Minister, higher judiciary and acts of Members of Parliament inside Parliament under its purview.

At the meeting held under the Chairmanship of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, contentious issues came up for discussion in the committee for the first time.

Anna Hazare, one of the members of the committee, who is spearheading the campaign for a strong and effective Lokpal bill, said that he was not hopeful of the government meeting its deadline of June 30 for preparing the bill.

Arvind Kejriwal and Prasahant Bhushan, both civil society members of the committee, said except on one issue of keeping citizen charter and public grievances under the jurisdiction of Lokpal, the government opposed the demands for bringing the Prime Minister, higher judiciary and the corrupt acts of MPs inside the Parliament under the ambit of the Lokpal.

They said the government’s proposals on Monday were “worse” than what it had proposed in its first bill, which had been “condemned and rejected.’

Mr. Kejriwal said even the latest bill of the government had kept Prime Minister under the purview of Lokpal but the government has gone back on it.

As no agreement could be reached between them on Monday, the government has decided to write to States and political parties to seek their opinion on these “issues of divergence” and get back to them at the next meeting on June 6.

Mr. Sibal said there was need to take the view of the States since Lokayuktas have to be appointed there.

Mr. Bhushan said the government representatives told them that bringing the Prime Minister under Lokpal’s purview would make him ‘dysfunctional.’

He pointed out that the government’s bill itself had a provision for bringing Prime Minister under the Lokpal and even now he was not beyond the purview of investigation on corruption issues.

“We only wanted that he comes under the purview of an independent agency instead of the agencies that come under the government which results in conflict of interest,” Mr. Bhushan said.

Mr. Kejriwal also rued “Prime Minister wants to be investigated by an agency like CBI, which is under him but not by an independent agency.”

Besides Mr. Mukherjee, those who attended the meeting from the government side were Ministers P. Chidambaram (Home), Mr. Sibal (Law), Salman Khurshid (Minority Affairs) and M. Veerappa Moily (Law).

From the civil society side, those present were Mr. Hazare, Shanti and Prashant Bhushan, Mr. Kejriwal and Santosh Hegde.

While the civil society members wanted the Lokpal to have powers to investigate corruption cases against the entire bureaucracy irrespective of its hierarchy, the government was of the view that it should confine to officers of Joint Secretary level and above.

On the issue of investigating corruption cases against the MPs, the government said that it has no objection to the Lokpal investigating corruption issues involving them outside Parliament but opposed the proposal to allow Lokpal to investigate the acts of corruption by the MPs inside Parliament.

The government also wanted that the defence personnel should be kept out of the purview of the bill, Mr. Kejriwal said.

He added that the government also held the view that the offices of Chief Vigilance Commissioner and CBI should not be merged with Lokpal.

The civil society members, however, rejected the government’s contentions and expressed dismay at its response.

Self-regulation

“There were too many fundamental differences on the bill today,” said Mr. Kejriwal adding the government wanted “self regulation” to take care of the issue of corruption in higher judiciary and the acts of MPs inside Parliament. We told them that self regulation has not worked in the last sixty years.”

Mr. Bhushan said “the response of the government was not very reasonable on all the issues. We were a bit disappointed by the response of the ministers. This whole concept of self-regulation does not work.”

Asked whether he is hopeful of an early resolution on these contentious issues, Kejriwal merely said “let us see and wait what happens“.

Mr. Sibal, however, expressed confidence that the bill for a strong and effective Lokpal will be a reality. “We must provide the country with a transparent legislation as corruption is an issue which concerns everybody. We remain committed to provide the people an effective Lokpal.”

Asked what will be the guiding principle of the government in drafting the bill amid so many differences, Mr. Sibal stressed “the guiding principle is that the Constitution is supreme. Any Lokpall bill must be consistent with the provisions of the Constitution.”

Mr. Kejriwal, however, said if keeping everything like judiciary, PM and MPs violate the Constitution then what will come under the Lokpal’s ambit.

He said that a decision has now been taken to seek public opinion on these contentious issues on website and seek their suggestions.

It was decided that the joint drafting committee will meet twice on June 6 and 10.

Patch up: Gilani says ISI, CIA conduit is back

By punem sexesena : LAHORE: In a sign of thawing relations between the estranged War on Terror allies, Pakistan and US, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that ties between the ISI and the CIA have improved following the raid in Abbottabad.
Talking to journalists in Lahore, Gilani said Pakistan will continue intelligence sharing with the US. However, he said that Washington had been told in clear terms that a repeat of Abbottabad raid would not be tolerated.
Gilani said the two governments had yet to resolve their differences on the policy of drone strikes.
He also said that Islamabad had sought help from the US to overcome energy crisis.
Relations with the US in general had turned sour after subsequent incidents involving a US contractor arbitrarily shooting two men in Lahore in January, and then a covert US operation deep inside Pakistani territory that killed al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden in early May.
The relations between CIA and ISI had broken down to such an extent that the Prime Minister himself declared in a TIME magazine interview that the cooperation between the two intelligence agencies had broken down. Pakistan ultimately ended up asking the US to recall all troops stationed in Pakistan.
However, after numerous attempts from both sides to assuage the critical relationship, it appears that the two agencies are set to work together again. High profile visits over the past week and half including CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell, the US Chief of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen and the Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.
Last week a group of CIA investigators were allowed to access to Osama bin Laden’s compound for nearly four hours.

Google Unveils Wireless Payment System

By punemsexesena : Google is among the first out of the gate in the attempt to make leather wallets go the way of the typewriter.

On Thursday, the technology giant introduced Google Wallet, a mobile application that will allow consumers to wave their cellphones at a retailer’s terminal to make a payment instead of pulling out a credit card. The app will also enable users to redeem special coupons and earn loyalty points.

Starting this summer, the wallet will be available on Sprint’s Nexus S 4G phone and able to hold certain Citibank-issued MasterCards. It will also hold a virtual Google Prepaid MasterCard, which can be loaded with money charged from existing plastic credit cards.

The mobile wallet will work at any of the 124,000 merchants that accept MasterCard’s PayPass terminals, which take contactless payments, and more than 300,000 merchants outside the United States. The wallet is powered by a technology called near-field communications, or N.F.C., which is incorporated into a chip in mobile phones and sends a message to the terminal sitting on merchants’ counters.

“Eventually, you will be able to put everything in your wallet,” said Stephanie Tilenius, vice president of commerce at Google, speaking at a news conference on Thursday.

But that grand vision could take a while to come to fruition. Various players have been working on mobile wallets for many years, but they have not gained traction because the companies involved have not been able to agree on how they will get paid or who will control the wallets. Mobile phone carriers, banks, credit card issuers payment networks and technology companies all have a stake in this battle.

With its wallet, Google will make money on “Google Offers” — the advertising deals from local and online businesses sent through the phone. Like Groupon, Google will collect a fee from participating retailers every time a person redeems the coupon. Citibank, meanwhile, will continue to collect the same fees as it would in a traditional credit card transaction.

It may take a little while for the Google Wallet to be fully functional across the country. While Google has partnered with more than 15 retailers, ranging from American Eagle Outfitters and Bloomingdale’s to the Container Store and Jamba Juice, they all need to upgrade their payment terminals. When they do, consumers will also be able to store and redeem special deals with the wallet. Merchants in New York and San Francisco will be ready this summer.

Once the retailers’ technology is in place, consumers will be able to walk into the retailer, and their phone will serve up a list of items they recently purchased, along with relevant discounts. Once consumers reach the checkout counter, they will be able to wave their phone, and the discounts will be applied, loyalty points will be awarded and the payment made. Google said it has been testing a variety of different offers, including a “deal of the day,” along with a $5 off check-in offer received upon entering a store.

The wallet app will require a PIN, and the payment credentials will be encrypted and stored on a chip, called the secured element, which lives inside the phone. The app itself will be free to users.

Google stressed that the wallet would work on an open platform, and invited other banks, credit card issuers, payment networks, mobile carriers and merchants to work with them.

“I expect that other payment networks and other banks will join this effort, though in some cases it will be a hedge strategy they employ along with their own mobile payment initiatives,” said Charles Golvin, an analyst with Forrester Research. “Since these payments utilize the same underlying business model as cards today, there is not significant disruption risk for these players today — the situation would be very different if other payment alternatives such as Paypal, which undercut their revenues, were being emphasized by Google.”

Google is also working with First Data, which processes payments and will serve as the wallet’s “trusted service manager,” ensuring the security of the transaction.

If the phone is stolen, the credit cards inside could be remotely disabled. Consumers would have the same “zero liability” for unauthorized transactions made with their phone as they would with their plastic cards.

Eventually, Google said its wallet would be able to hold much more than credit cards and loyalty programs. Someday, consumers will be able to pack in the contents of an entire purse, including car keys, theater tickets and airline boarding passes.

The five corporate executives - Gautam Doshi, Hari Nair, Surendra Pipara of Reliance Anil Dhriubhai Ambani Group, Swan Telecom Director Vinod Goenka and Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Ltd Managing Director Sanjay Chandra of will continue to be in Tihar Jail.

They can now appeal to the Supreme Court for bail. They have been in custody since April 20.

The five corporate leaders were sent to 14-day judicial custody in the 2G spectrum scam on April 18 by the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court of Additional Sessions Judge OP Saini.

The CBI had filed the chargesheet against them under the various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act relating to forgery, cheating, faking documents, giving and accepting illegal gratification for abuse of official position.

The CBI had charged that former telecom minister A Raja conspired with top bureaucrats, including a retired IAS officer, and corporate leaders to cause a loss of Rs 30,984 crore in the allocation of 2G spectrum.
